I don't smoke. I don't smoke cigars. BUT THERE'S A DOG THAT VISITS HERE OFTEN NAMED OZZY (owned by the bartender Joe).
I wanted to get a cigar for my brother who had graduated from George Washington in May 2012 then started a new job in the fall of 2012. I really tried, but I can't remember the name of the cigar I bought for him. The guy at the bar--Joe--took me into the cigar room (maybe there's a formal term for this type of room) where they house all the cigars at the exact right temperature and helped me pick out cigars. Honestly, I was expecting them to be super expensive, but I think the most expensive one (the one I got for my brother) was in the $20 something range.
For kicks, I decided to buy a cigar for myself before meeting up with friends. Joe showed me how to properly light a cigar, and I proceeded to talk it up with the two other patrons. Both were white males in their 30s or 40s watching some sort of sports game and talking to Joe. I'd like to think that I entertained them for that one day with my silly girl questions.
In any case, this was really my first cigar lounge, and Ozzy the camera shy black dog really made it great. Oh, the people weren't too bad either. I think Joe said something about famous people (past presidents?) have visited Churchill's Lounge. I could see that. The chairs (none being used--all of us were at the bar) looked nice and plush.
Good place to go if you want to smoke a cigar and just hang out with friends. I'm dissapointed because they did not have any scotch.
The cigar selection was decent. I don't smoke anything fancy. They had the Ashton VSGs and that's all I really wanted.
They charged me twice for my cigar purchase, and when I called they said to give it a few days and if the charge still showed up then I should talk to them.
Kind of shady, other than that its not bad.
Very cool cigar lounge in Boston. In fact it is only one of 3 I can think of in Boston period. Because of Boston's odd alcohol/tobacco laws you are unable to have any hard liquor while at Churchill's but they have a full array of beer and wine. The bartender was super friendly and offered my friend and I a brief tour of their cigar room and made a few suggestions for us rookies. His picks really helped me enjoy my cigar with my wine selection. Definitely returning, the only obvious negative is that your cloths will smell like cigars for a good while once you leave.
Review Source:Circa 1995, in the pre smoking ban world, this place would probably be called a "bar". The cigar selection is pretty tiny. Half the people around the bar are smoking cigarettes, anyways.
But it's also a bar in the Cheers sense of the word. There are locals on a first name basis with the bartenders. The bartender brings his dog in sometimes. If Churchill's is anything, it's laid back.
We found this bar while walking towards North End for dinner. Chill and relaxing, we loved the cigar selection. The barman recommended a fabulous fruity red wine that matched perfectly our spicy cigar. Barman offered us fantastic service and was super passionate. Suave and charming spot. Extra experience points if you're suited up.
Review Source:I love going here because no one else goes here. Â People don't smoke anymore. Â I love cigars. Â And so does my pal. Â So we closed a weeknight by hanging out here. Â There was only 1 guy working - but he did a great job. Â He cut our smokes and brought them over. Â He chatted with the few people at the bar. Â I think they were regulars and I'm sure a few of them (the ladies) probably didn't have to pay for their "lighting fee" (a mandatory charge just for being here) - they were mainly smoking cigarettes. Â Being here is like being in a private club.
The ventilation wasn't the greatest, and you will stink for days afterwards, but we had a nice time trying that new Sam spring beer and smoking some truly exellent cigars we picked out from the humidor.
I should mention the selection in the humidor has decreased dramatically. Â There is a lot of empty shelf space in there. Â But, I know the interest in smoking has declined lately, so I'm not surprised. Â It's just kind of sad.
Still, we enjoyed our stay. Â The guys working here always do right by us and being able to chill and watch people go by or watch the game on TV is always nice.
Happy 500, Churchill's! Â Just kidding - this isn't your 500th review, it's mine. Â However, I'd be delighted to share it with you, dear cigar lounge. Â Why would I do such a thing, you ask? Well, as you know, you and I have had quite the affair over the years...
We met on my 21st birthday, when my favorite RA-slash-bartender-slash-cigar-afficionado introduced us. Â I fell in love with your sleek leather chairs, your fancy coffee tables, your non-plastic ashtrays, your mounted flat screen TVs...wait, scratch that. Those didn't come until way later. Â Regardless, I settled in with a cigar and a glass of port and let you become my first...adult beverage. An honor that can be given out to only one, and only once in a lifetime.
You were also my first cigar...and while it turns out that cigar smoke actually makes me rather sick, it was nonetheless a special moment in my life.
You revealed to me your deepest, inner-most sanctum...and walking into that humidor of yours was like breaking down an invisible wall to reap the reward of what is held within - lovely lovely (unlit, thus incredible-smelling) cigars. Rows and rows and rows. Â I drank you in for a long while, taking in the smells, the sights, the beautiful uniformity of cigar boxes lined up like soldiers.
We sank deep into the darkness of the evening, as cigars turned to embers and glasses emptied. You made me feel warm, welcome, comfortable. Â You were my first and I am happy it was so.
Since our first encounter, you and I have had a rocky relationship - we've had our ups and downs. Â I've sat at your bar many times and met dozens of people. Â Some fantastic, some ridiculous. Â I've made friends at that bar, gotten dates at that bar, met potential roommates at that bar (you know, if i move to NY and want to share an apartment with 3 girls, a fake wall, and a toilet partitioned from the kitchen with nothing but a curtain), and shared many many conversations with my favorite Thursday/Saturday bartender at that bar.
It was there, Churchill's, that you taught me that cigar smoke makes me extremely and violently ill. Â It was not for your ventilation - as this is more than adequate at disposing of second-hand smoke - but for my insistence on being in close proximity with cigar smoke. Â I take the blame for that disagreement, Churchill's. Â That one was all me.
I haven't been back in quite some time.  As you know, long distance relationships rarely work out, and I did not want to give false hope that you and I would have a solid future.  Though I've cut my losses and moved on to other lounges/bars, there will only ever be one you, and you were my first  No other can take that away - you and I share a special bond.
Lovingly yours always and always,
Heather
PS. Â I'm seeing your bartender on the side. Â Sorry you had to find out this way.
A cigar bar. Yes, a cigar bar, with a large humidor and many TVs. The ventilation is pretty good, but you still come out of there reeking like smoke. I highly recommend cleaning everything you wore after attending Churchills. I guess that comes with the territory of a cigar bar.
They have some beers and some wine, but I wish they had more or better beers. However, they do carry Guinness and Stella with the standard Bud Light, so it's better than nothing.
Their service cannot be beat. The bartender knows my boyfriend's name and greets him by it when he walks into the room. There is a small bar, but many other places to sit, including couches, bar tables and comfortable chairs.
I have to say that this place isn't my favorite. This is ONLY because I do not enjoy smoking cigars, which is the whole purpose of this bar.
I went to Chuchill's Lounge for the first time last Saturday with my boyfriend. Although I am not a cigar smoker, I was so pleasantly surprised at the quality of service and atmosphere - I will definately come here more often! The bartender was very attentive and charming with a very impressive knowledge of cigars.
Review Source:An old teacher of mine once said: "There is nothing more relaxing or rewarding than smoking a cigar with your friends." He couldn't have been more right.
I love going to Churchill's after a nice meal in the North End. This place has huge leather chairs and couches and is just a great place to let go an smoke a nice cigar. The music selection is very relaxing and not overpowering.
Each time that I've been the Churchill's I've been guided in the humidor by  the extremely knowledgeable and friendly bartender. After choosing a cigar, he cuts it for you and delivers it to your chair. He genuinely cares about whether or not you're enjoying your cigar selection.
My only gripe about this place is that the bar is so limited. When I smoke I cigar I want to drink scotch or brandy or cognac, not necessarily wine and definitely not beer. Apparently more than 60% of their sales need to be tobacco products for them to be able to allow indoor smoking, so I understand why they can't offer my preferred beverages, but really I go to Churchill's to smoke a cigar rather than drink anyways.
If you haven't been, I'd encourage you to go to Churchill's. It's a lot of fun and a different way to spend a night out in Boston.
Have you ever wanted to sit in a smoky room on plush leather furniture surrounded by old people while drinking a Guinness?
If so, its not going to get any better than this.
I'm not a smoker (not even cigars), but there is something delightfully charming about this place. I feel like Miss Blankenship would have been sitting at the bar before dropped dead at the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce Agency.
The leather furniture makes up for the fact there are only three beers on tap. Actually, no... the fact its a total throwback makes up for the lack of good beer.
The best cigar lounge in Boston, in my opinion. Good ventilation, comfortable chairs and plenty of TVs. It's a laid-back setting, where one can enjoy a cigar with some company in relative peace.
The humidor selection is rather limited, however. and is the main reason for a deducted star. They are friendly if you bring your own smokes, but I always buy one or two out of respect for the establishment.
Limited wine and port selection, with 3 beers on tap and a few more choices for bottles. Just a fantastic place to unwind after work.
A pleasant, relaxed cigar bar with plenty of seating. This is where I go  with friends for  a good cigar and few beers. The humidor is overpriced (true of every cigar bar) and the selection is not great but more than adequate. Churchill's is also fine with patrons bringing their own cigars which is nice - you can get some better smokes at Peretti's (which is only a few blocks away). The drinks menu usually has some interesting local beers in addition to the usual major brands and a selection of sherries. Highly recommended. The staff has been unfailingly attentive and friendly without being obtrusive.
Review Source:Went here with two friends to grab a quick drink, and a cigar before heading back to our hotel.
I was a little surprised, the selection of cigars is smaller then some other cigar lounges i've been to, but the ventilation and space/layout was much better then others.
ended up choosing an ashton churchill, straight cut, and a few glasses of sierra nevada. Â Sat on one of the single chairs, listened to the music (surprisingly good), and watched some sports highlights, and talked to my friends. Â I gotta say, extremely relaxing, and helpful.
Worth checking out.
A very relaxed and unpretentious cigar bar with decent prices and selection, and a friendly, attentive staff. Nice location and furnishings with a couple TVs (but not too many).
Would be nice if they had a full liquor license, but don't let that stop you from visiting. Guinnes and Sierra Nevada on draft, plus bottles and a good wine selection.
Stopped there this past Saturday after the Craft beer festival. The staff was very helpful. As a few others have said, the cigar selection is a little limited but still had some good smokes. They also sell cigarettes as well. You can bring your own and without a cutting fee. There are a few TV's that you can watch the game on which is great. Very comfortable and causal atmosphere. Not an intimidating place at all. I've been to stanzi and here, and like both, but  probably would come back here first.
Review Source:Churchill's is an exceptional cigar bar! Prior to, I had only been to Cigar Masters (which is nice a well, but different). The atmosphere is very relaxing and home like. You immediately get the feeling that you're welcomed and encouraged to stay. I definitely intend to become a regular and feel very comfortable bringing a nice book to read, or perhaps my homework. The only reason that I didn't rate it five stars is because I thought the cigar selection was weak. For those who smoke an occasional cigar, he/she would consider this a five star lounge. Unfortunately, for those a little more savvy (or snobbish, lol), it's likely to disappoint just a little. On the upside, you can certainly bring your own cigars which was the case with me. This is where Cigar Masters (CM) has the one up, they have  a much larger selection of cigars but lack some of the comfortableness that's attributed to Churchill's. The environment here (Churchill's) seems to cater to a more mature crowd where conversation levels are respectable and the focus is all about enjoying your cigar, not so much the social aspect that overpower the cigar at CM.
Review Source:I didn't realize there were still cigar bars in the city....well well there is at least one and I heard rumors of a second one. Anyways.....the humidor room and selection of fine cigars and pipe tobacco was fantastic. Several great beers and wines available to enjoy. Fine, comfy couches and chairs to relax in and lots of leather bound books and rich mahogany...um yep! It was a cool place to share a smoke with a buddy and sip on a Stella or port.
Review Source:What a gem sitting, literally, under our noses!
This place is under our hotel. Mama had been here before when she came out for work with some friends. We decided to stop by for a nightcap and smoke in a warm place.
The place was empty and I didn't have high hopes for it. Actually, there was a couple at the bar. The place is deceivingly big inside. There's a humidor area, the bar area and a sitting lounge area.
I stood outside the humidor just looking in while mama went to the restroom. The bartender, Tony, came by and opened it up for me. I'm no connoisseur, but, I do smoke cigars here and there. I found a small one, figuring we'd be in and out of there. Mama and I ordered a glass of red each. It's really all you can order, besides Stella. No liquor allowed.
Mama started chatting up the nice lady next to her. Then the bartender started chiming in. Before you know it, we're all caught up in some really good conversation. Tony was very social and offered a lot of insight into all things Boston, (the Sox, the Celts, the Pats, the chowdah etc). The lady and her husband, wo were apparently locals, were extremely charming and easy going. I didn't get any sense of that east coast pretentiousness that others have mentioned. It was a very relaxing and pleasant way to end our night. Plus, being able to smoke indoors is pretty cool. Mama and I ended up getting another round of red and I got another cigar.
We'll definitely be back here when we get back to town.
I first went into Churchill's over the summer. I had 5:00 classes and stopped in one night after a particularly grueling math class. I was surprised that as soon as I entered I was approached and asked for ID, but the guy was polite about it. I set down my bag, ordered a Stella and was led to the humidor. I can't remember what I smoked that night but I remember it was good.
The atmosphere was really chill; the bartender / guy who asked for ID apparently brought in his iPod and had a really relaxing playlist on. Just about every song that came on I used Shazam on my phone to find out the artist and name of the song so I could download them later on. I never caught his name, but he repeatedly checked on me and other tables to see if I needed another drink (hell yes), how the cigar was, etc. He was always very formal, addressing me as 'Sir' even though he was probably a year or two older than me, but equally approachable. My table was opposite the bar where he was carrying on animated conversations with other patrons, and was even smoking a stogie himself.
The bill wasn't very much for three Stellas and the cigar so I made sure to leave a generous tip.
I went back a few times because I was hooked on the atmosphere and the attitude of the staff, plus the windows are great for people watching. It's really kind of funny to see tourists walking by, look in the window and do a double-take when they see people smoking. Smoking? Indoors?!? Someone call the board of health!
Been back twice since summer ended and school resumed. I had bragged to everyone about this place, how much more relaxed and cool it was than Stanza over on Hanover Street, so I finally got my friend to come with me one day after lunch and two pitchers of sangria at Anthem in Faneuil Hall.
Horrible.
There were two old guys tending bar and a few guys who were clearly plowed out of their minds at 4:00 on a Friday. One guy took our drink orders and that was it. Never checked on us again. I went up to the bar and asked for a specific cigar which he brought over to me, but that was it. My friend and I were there for 2 hours, and no one came to see if we needed a refill, nothing. The sound system was pumping out talk radio; the atmosphere was completely shot.
The last time I was there was late September. I went in because I had 6 hours to kill and thought I could have a couple beers and do some reading. At 1:00, this time on a Thursday, the same two old guys were behind the bar this time with a clearly wasted, alcoholic, (hopefully retired) older man wearing a Boston Firefighter t-shirt. I sat in the farthest part of the place, where the armchairs and couches are but they were so loud and obnoxious. Again, sports talk was on the radio but it was absurdly loud. The firefighter guy was spewing profanities and leering at every woman who walked by, describing what he would do to them "right there on the sidewalk". It was disgusting.
I waited intentionally to see if anyone would come to check if I needed a refill; an hour passed with the drunk guy and me as the only customers, besides people who came in to buy cigarettes and the old guys never left the bar. Finally I went up, paid my bill and left.
If I had to grade Churchill's on the last two experiences I had there I would give 0 stars, but the awesome nights I had over the summer make that impossible. I don't know if the young guy from the summer still works there and is only there weekends or late-night, someone feel free to let me know. My birthday is coming up and it would have been great to go to Churchill's after dinner in the North End but I specifically told people if we go out we're staying the hell away from 40 North Street.
Someone else commented on the ventilation. It is pretty bad but better than Stanza. That day I went in and only had one drink in an hour, hour and a half, when I finally met up with some people hours later they immediately asked if I'd been at Churchill's. I absolutely reeked and no one had even been smoking. It just permeates everything I guess and hangs in the air. Stanza is worse though: there the rooms are literally filled with smoke until someone enters or leaves, opening the door which vents all the smoke out and up to the street. I've never noticed that at Churchill's.
Nice place in Boston to chill out, smoke a stogie and sip some nice wine. I brought my girlfriend here after a nice night out. The staff was extremely attentive from the moment we walked in the door, and hooked us up with two cigars that were exactly what we were looking for. The wine menu, although not extensive, covers most of the palates that walk into this place, and the prices are very reasonable.
Why not 5? Seating was a bit limited, and the wine menu could be extended a tad. Definitely a winner though.
So chillaxed. Â Totally different ambiance from Cigar Masters. Â Always less crowded, always more laid back. Â You don't feel like you have to dress up and get your nice clothes all cigar-flavored and stinky to go. Â Good prices. Â Really relaxing. Â Can always find a comfy seat. Â Niiiice. Â This place introduced me to cigars, had switched to Cigar Masters, then randomly came back and remembered how much I love it. Â Go to Cigar Masters to feel cool...go here to feel completely relaxed.
Review Source:This is the worst of the cigar bars IMHO. That doesn't mean it is bad with consideration granted that there are only three left.
The place is somewhat bland. It does not have the feel of a cigar bar to me. The drinks are average. Cigars are average. Take the walk down Hanover for a step up (really down I guess [*rimshot!*]).
This is hands-down the best cigar bar in Boston. Â It's not stuffy nor pretentious and you can almost always get a great seat. Â Even though it's in the heart of Fanueil hall, it's still filled with locals and you rarely hear an "R" being pronounced. Â The humidor has a great selection of cigars but I prefer smoking from my private locker. Â The staff is extremetly knowledgeable and makes great suggestions. Â They offer some of the most attentive service anywhere. Â Another great thing is that they validate parking at the Parcel 7 lot. Â It's $1/hr up to 3 hours! Â If you're looking to relax, smoke a cigar and not be surrounded by a lot of cigar snobs, this is the place for you.
Review Source:Great place for a smoke. Â Not like the Sigari in the N. End where it is crowded, uncomfortable and yuppie hangout. Â This is a place to relax and have great conversations with friend and clients.
Been here many times and never disappoint. Â The staff is always helpful, never overbearing and let's you do what you're in there for: relax and enjoy a cigar. Â Cigar selection can be a little bigger but what they carry is sufficient.
The other place that is similar is 2 Guys Smoke Shop in Salem, NH if you're up north.
Unfortunately Boston is letting the thought police take control and we are losing our cigar bars - so support them as much as you can while you can.
Churchill's is a great place. Â It's very easy going and comfortable. Â You can bring your own or buy one from their humidor. Â As a matter of etiquette I would recommend that you buy one of theirs if you do bring one of yours.
I know cigar bars are limited by the city's liquor/tobacco revenue ratio requirments, but I do wish they had a full liquor license here.
I'm a big fan.
As far as cigar smoking with a roof over your head goes.. Churchill's is my #1 choice. I really like the fact that there's super comfy couches, arm chairs and a well stocked bar. No tvs in the main smoking area which I really like and the big glass street level windows make for great people watching : )
Compared to the other options for cigar bars in the city, you will not find one that is more enjoyable to relax at.
As an important sidenote: the douchbagery, pretentiousness and elitism is kept to a minimum here- by both client and staff. This is a huge factor for me and makes this place all the better.
A cigar bar where I don't feel like I'm surrounded by die-hard cigar nuts. Â Awesome. Â I've been here twice, the same two helpful guys behind the bar served people booze and took them into the humidor. Â They were both very newbie-friendly, hooking me and my girlfriend up with very mild stogies. Â Lots of comfortable seating in the back if you're into that lounging sort of thing.
Review Source:The selection of smokes are good, prices fair, the service very good and the views of the women walking by can distract and interrupt your conversation. Â
A neighborhood of eclectic patrons "regulars" from that share the common interest of a fine cigars and discussions that involve the usual stuff ; sports, politics; and the sometimes question as to who has the best Pizza in town. Tourists who happen in are welcomed and frequently caught up in the banter. Â
The only hiccup is that because it's a cigar bar  every time you visit one clothing worn need to be Martinized?? Really the industry needs to invent a smoke eaters that works.
Churchill's is awesome-- unpretentious, but a very classy place to have a cigar. Â They don't have a full bar; only wine and beers, but you can bring your own cigars, or buy from their fairly priced humidor. Â This is a good place for groups, and is much more spacious than Cigar Masters in the Back Bay.
Review Source:As a preface, I smoke cigars once and a while, I am not some cigar expert and a couple friends smoke more cigars than I can count all the time.
This place is an awesome cigar bar. Â Absolutely great. Â I didn't know about this place until a friend of mine recommended it as I normally would go to the North End for a cigar. Â It is a bit more reasonable as far as price of the cigars and the drinks. Â The staff was really nice and knew their cigars, and continued to check on us for drinks, but not in a bad way. Â Very laid back feel with nice relaxing chairs and couches and a good ventilation system.
Look forward to going back.
Man musk. Scotch. The Perfume of a well crafted cigar wafting away from the scattered patrons lounging in their supple leather chairs... I had never been into Churchill's until last night as I thought it would be impossible for a decent bar, much less cigar bar, to be located in such close proximity to Faneuil Hall, in a Hotel, and 'gasssssp' the Hard Rock Cafe!?
A few things to note: the service and staff here make this place what it is. Â It really feels like a high end establishment because of the attentive waitstaff and bartenders who are MORE than happy to freshen up your drink, bring you another chair, and recommend a good smoke from the well stocked humidor. Â Secondly, the room itself is a lot nicer than I had thought it would be based on my quick glances through the glass windows walking by over the past few years. Â Speaking of which, this fish tank type atmosphere (which I usually detest) lends it self to some interesting people watching, which not so oddly goes really well with a tumbler of scotch and a cohiba.
Be advised that this is NOT someplace to take the non-smoke friendly love interest or acquaintance, and also note that you have NO hope of getting any phone numbers after partaking in a cocktail or two at Churchill's. You will leave smelling like an old man's sock stuffed with cigarette butts.
Unless you know some chicks that are into that sorta thing.... But I don't.
Very relaxing place to go to after work. Â The staff is very friendly and has a lot of knowledge of cigars to help the armature cigar lover. Â The service is generally exceptional because the small crowds and lounge setup make it very easy to be served. Â Beers are reasonably priced for a place so close to the financial district. Â Be warned, if you plan on going out anywhere after, bring some cologne because you will stink of smoke. Â There is nowhere to put your jacket in winter time so that will stink as well. Â I don't know if they serve food here either but who would want to eat with all that smoke anyway. Â When you get hungry, I would recommend walking next door to Red Sky lounge.
Review Source:One of the last bastions of smoking. Â Of course, I don't smoke, so for me, it's not all that much of an attraction. Â But if you've just gotta get your fume on, you should check this place out. Â It's better, at least, than some of the bars that vie for your attention in Faneuil Hall. Â A little more expensive, but isn't the smoky ambiance worth it? Â Per'aps.
Review Source:One of the four places in Boston that I know of that still allow smoking. Sigari's, Tangierino's, (sp?) and Cigar Masters being the other two. How can I say a bad word about any of the four? This is probably the second cheapest of the two. Good selection of cigars, and reasonable prices. The beer and wine list is moderate but covers all the ground I asked for. Plenty of TV's so you don't miss the game, but they are also not in focal points so you can completely ignore them if you wish. I also believe they have Wi-Fi but am not sure, check it out, if you're one of the people who love a good cigar inside, but WILL NOT let anyone smoke in your house, this is for you!
