This place is absurd! We decided to order from here late night and we were less than pleased with the service.  We ordered a chicken gyro and the meat looked like old gyro meat.  We ordered a gryro cheeseburger and the cheese looked very old like it had been sitting there for days.  They neglected to bring my pop that i ordered and there was no sauce on any of the fries we ordered.  Not to mention that we were told we would have our food by 1am and our food came around 120 and the delivery guy rushed thru ringing our doorbell crazily as if he was in a hurry.  I will never order fron this place again. They put no care into making our food and the taste was horrible we didnt even finish our meals

absolutely terrible. we live a whole mile and a half from the place and it took a full 90 minutes to have our food delivered. i called when it reached an hour and was told "oh your driver just called, he's just around the corner", WITHOUT ASKING WHO I WAS... so a half an hour later, our food showed up... and surprise surprise, was cold as shit. the fires were terrible, the wings were terrible, and the mozzarella sticks felt like someone just thawed them out and ran a hair dryer over them because the cheese was not even close to being melted... the absolute cherry on top was the hair my wife found in her chicken tenders. this place is garbage. if you want good wings and/or fries, go to Buffalo Joe's... it's not far from this dump and you won't be disappointed... and i actually registered for Yelp JUST TO LEAVE THIS REVIEW because it was that bad.

Crap. Absolute crap. Since new ownership and the new name, this place has taken a turn for the worse.

CJs for the win. Yes it used to be as and yes and was shut down for health code, but let's all take a step back and call a spade a spade.

Who will deliver cheese fries to u at 4am?
    CJs!

Who will give you fried chicken at 3am and extra pieces if ur a drunk girl?
    CJs!

But seriously, the workers are always down for your drunk antics, the food is good drunk food, try the chicken sandwich and they do deliver.

Yes, sometimes 5am delivery is a little slow, but it's fine.

I know all Loyola students and alums alike remember this place fondly!

    Ramblers!

It was 3 AM after a Friday night of party crawling and drinking when I came across CJ's. My friends wanted to go for the gyros, which I was going to get as well until I realized that I was drunk enough to not figure out if I had enough money after tax. So I went with the chicken sandwich combo with large fries. For under 6 bucks, and from the look of the place, I wasn't expecting much. A step above a McChicken maybe.
Mistaken I was. The bun stood tall unlinke its smashed and disrespected drive thru cousins. The fried chicken patty, which gives sandwich its name, was the least exceptional part as it was exactly as I expected, though larger. A thick slice of tomato and a lot of crisp onion along with lettuce are what put this over the edge. They don't skimp on the veggies here so the flavor isn't just bread and chicken. Plus the mass of fries were good too.
I probably would have passed this place up had it been daytime or I was sober, and probably still will, but whenever it's late I'll be stopping by this place.

This place used to called AJ's and back in the mid-late 90's they were amazing, you could get a double cheese burger with fries and 2 cans of pop for like 4 dollars. They starting going sky high in prices like double.... it became apparent that they were in need of help when the daily homeless person who started out cleaning tables for a meal started to work there and make my food. They closed down and PPOOOOOOOFFFFF CJ'sappears. I thought I would give it a try and they charged me 5 dollars for an order of cheese fries and the cheese was all skinned at the top like they couldnt even stir the cheese before they served it. I have never and will never go back.

    Update:
It's over.  I don't know what happened, but we are officially boycotting this place forever.  Twice my boyfriend had food delivered.  First time they brought a totally wrong order which he didn't check until the driver took off.  Then the next time, the food took almost two hours, and the driver said he didn't have change, expecting to keep it for a tip.  Never again.

Best fish sandwich!  Comes with the best fries!  The owner is genuinely nice and from what I have seen, the kitchen is clean.   If you have to eat fast food, come here instead of MacDonald's.  Prices are fair and they're open late.

:( very sad, very disappointed, very feeling bad in my heart over this grease shack! This is why my people....  Sure we need to eat healthy food most of the time, this was my place to get down and eat comfort food once in a while.  For all you newbies to Loyola and Edgewater, it used to be called  AJ's Grill, not Cj's.  My passion was the Veggie sub with fries! They had a great ambiance with a couple tv's, some arcade games, it was pretty clean and fresh and best of all the guys that  worked there were really nice. It was the combination of everything that made it such a great experience. Today, 6-12-2010 it was nothing like what I originally experienced.  Dirty! Dirty! Dirty! Broken window boarded up! Plants! Gross Peach color! a TV standing up on one of the tables! Ripped boothes! The fries were the dark colored dirty oil heavy kind, rather than the light colored crispy, yet mashed on the inside kind. :( I did not order the sandwhich because the place looked so dirty.  My boyfriend felt it safe to order chicken fingers. Gross! My opinion is that I feel really bad that there used to be a really great place to eat n hang and, it felt good, it tasted good, now it is surrounded by filth and made me feel like crap! If we take care of ourselves and our property like this.. what does that say about us? All that was needed was to upkeep what AJ's started and it failed! miserably! Where is AJ? Please tell me! if you started a new place, I wanna know! I am sad :( very sad :( If I could put no stars, I would! So to end on a more positive note, I would be willing to help clean up the place!  I would love a place back like AJ's!

After 20 minutes of driving aimlessly looking for late night eats after the Atoms for Peace show Sunday night, we finally stopped when we saw CJ's and the Pumping Room or whatever it was called next door. We picked CJ's because Kimmi had been talking about gyros earlier in the night. I got the best chicken gyros I've had yet in Chicago here. FYI, it was not on the wall menu, but it's on the takeout menu. The man who took our order (possibly the owner?) was very nice. The decor is really awesome with primary colors everywhere. As another yelper said, it's totally got a late 80's/early 90's vibe going on. I'm not sure when I'll be back, but if I ever happen to wind up hungry in Edgewater, I'd definitely hit up CJ's again.

I haven't eaten at CJ's since my days at Loyola...and the few years after when I was bumming around Edgewater... but I always, ALWAYS, got the Gyro platter! I have never been disappointed! Even when delivered in 10degree weather, it's piping hot! The fries may be a little soggy but they still taste like cooked potatoes, so you'll be OK.

If you go in to eat you'll probably be freaked out. Rightfully so. I wouldn't ever, EVER, want to see what lurks behind the counters.

It's plain ol' cheap, greasy goodness!

Don't think too much about this decision. Just eat it. It's great...after a bender.

Hey, it's CJ's. It ain't fine dining. But it's always there. Open until 4 am, delivers, every fried bit of goodness you could possibly want. And then some. Also, the owner and (I assume) his wife are nice as hell. The one star lost here is for the shame you feel because you go so often that the owner knows you, your order, who you typically go with, and you have the shocking realization that you've eaten here 5 times this week....

But I love you forever, CJ's.

CJ's is like a motherly figure. It's there for me after a long and hard night at the bar (disclaimer: I don't live with my mother, but try to following the simile) with a piping hot plate of french fries, hot dogs, and chicken wings.

CJ's is the gold standard of drunk food.

Add to that, good-hearted conversation with the man and woman who, with great care, slop sauces of all colors all over my fried food, there is no better place in the universe at 3:00am. The moment you walk in the door you are greeted with the aroma of grease that has been baked into the carpet (fun fact! CJ's is carpeted). These warm heart clogging fumes feel an awful lot like a good hug from your mother.

All bets are off if you're sober, though.

    CJ's...will you be my mommy?

So AJs has become CJs.  I wonder if they really thought changing one letter (the more commonly used one even!) in the name would fool anyone.  I sincerely hope not but then again the kids that are at Loyola now probably can't remember two years back anyway so I bet they have gotten away with it

A couple weeks ago after a raucous night of catching up with all the old neighborhood friends, I was teetering on the edge of "too drunk to take the red line home," which actually can happen believe or not.  I'm not proud of myself for what I did next, but I made a stop in CJ's to sober up.

The fact that I didn't get violently ill from the food, like my final visit there under the old AJ's moniker, is the nicest thing I will say.

When you get your delivery, expect the bag to be soggy with grease.
This doesn't bother me. It actually makes for excellent hang over food.

    Give it a try!

This place used to be called AJ's Grill, but it appears to be under new management.  The menu hasn't changed - a mix of various fast food plates including non-McDonalds items like gyros, catfish, and fried chicken.

The seating area is noticeably cleaner than it was under the old management. The manager/owner was very nice and struck up conversation with me while I was waiting for my order. The food is tasty with good portion size.

Not a place to take a date, but if you're in the neighborhood and want some decent fast food for yourself, this is a good option.

I'm not sure how long CJ's Grill has been open.  Years, maybe.  But, I noticed it only a short time ago.  On our recent frigid Sunday (3/1) I decided to give it a try.

Interior design: Along the walls are booths from a brutal era (late '80s / early '90s, maybe).  Their color coordination is poor and the back cushions have a pattern I'd describe as office building cafeteria camouflage.  In the center, along the longitudinal axis, are yellow-blue-red formica tables, arranged end-to-end, that you might see in a Cedar Point restaurant.  They're a good distance from the booths on either side, so there's a feeling of spaciousness, which is always good.  And, no, they definitely don't match the booths.  No big deal, of course.  There are also three TVs (three different sizes) hanging in strategic locations.  One of them was showing an amateur video program.  (Aside: It made me think of how we're converging on the world depicted in Idiocracy.  This show was just a few steps from "Ow!  My Balls!")  I'm obviously no interior designer, but hopefully that description gave you a visual sense of the place.

Food: Their menu has about 80% of all the fast food you'd ever want.  I saw gyros, fried catfish, and hot dogs.  I had a Polish, fries, and drink for $4.99.  It's hard to screw up a hot dog, and that didn't happen here.  They did a good job of packing the fixings.  The fries were a bit soggy but tasty.

Service: Excellent... the food was prepared quickly and the two guys behind the counter were very courteous and helpful.

Overall, there was nothing terribly surprising here.  It met my expectations but did not "exceed" in any category (excepting service).  3 stars.
