First off, what's with all the dive bars on 39th...seems like that's the only type offered on that glorious street. Oh well.
So it's a dive bar. It gets an A-OK rating for its dive-bar-ness. Not much to expect. The bartenders were nice. They had a few interesting taps (or at least more than Miller, Bud, Coors, etc.). Prices are good to fine. Not totally skeezy. Enjoyed the patron guided juke box.
If I have to pick dive bars on 39th street, Gilhouly's is my 2nd choice on account of their windows (#1 Fric & Frac, #last DB Cooper's...need windows to not feel like a sad drunk).
I've been to Gilhouly's a few times after dining on 39th, and each time it's been with my "hipster" friend because she likes to play pool. Â Each time we've been in, I noticed we were the only females besides the bartender. Â I also stuck out like a sore thumb because I am neither a middle aged man or a hipster. Â
The place is a dive bar and I do like it. Â The interior is cool. Â Brick walls and artwork. and big windows. Â A few tables throughout and pool tables in the back with someone always playing pool. The restroom is probably smaller than a closet and it's a triangular shape. The bartenders have always been friendly, they have good specials, and a decent beer selection. Â They do not serve food besides the free popcorn, BUT you can bring in pizza from d'Bronx.
