The Rundown:
Coffee - Pretty Darn Good
Tea - try their blends or create your own
Vegan goodies - Cinnamon Coffee Cake was just the right size and scrumptious
Atmosphere - Unique, artful with dark lighting, more for study or work than social.
Location - Super convenient and they have their own, small parking lot
Service - always been good
If you're hungry they have a rather large menu for a coffee shop but they're happy to sell you just a 'nanner if that's your yen. Â They have a nutella crepe - that oughta sell some of you on this place, right there.
They carry Comfy Cow Ice cream, a local favorite. Â They also have beer and wine for the European cafe-stylers out there. Â Wine for those that do and coffee for those that don't plus something to nosh on, all in my favorite neighborhood. Â Two thumbs up!
I love the atmosphere. It's so cozy and comfortable and I could easily pass a couple hours here. I love the location as well.
The crepes are delicious. I've not had a bad one though some of the baristas seem more skilled at crepe making than others. I've also enjoyed the vast majority of the drinks I've ordered here as well. Luckily I don't live closer or I'd spend way too much on coffee and crepes.
I do quite a bit of my work at coffee shops- so I look at them more from a functionality perspective than a cozy hideaway to enjoy a cup of Joe. Java is a good friend of mine because they have more than just coffee! Sometimes I want a beer, or a glass of wine, or a tasty crepe. This place has all of them including ice cream if that's your thing. On top of having multiple indulgences in one place, they are very functional. I have never experienced a bad connection there and, unlike many good coffee shops, they have outlets everywhere. I also go there often for meetings because of their amazing meeting table/space that can be secluded by simply closing a curtain, and can be secured by reservation. I go to other places just for a change of scenery and to try different coffees, but on the whole this is my coffee shop preference!
Review Source:As a frequent coffee shop patron, Java is one of my favorite places to do work especially in the winter time. It has a cozy atmosphere with a fireplace, a couch, and a private room that you can reserve for meetings. I never have trouble finding a table. The coffee is pretty good too. Honestly though, the main thing that keeps me coming back is the fact that I love me some Java crepes! They are absolutely delicious.
My one complaint is this: when you order an iced coffee (which they have listed on their menu) they are really giving you an Iced Americano. If I wanted an iced Americano, I would have ordered one! I wish that they would just admit that they don't  have iced coffee. Regardless of this minor frustration, the crepes keep me coming back.
Of the Java location this is one of the best, Comfy Cow ice cream, beer, some good snacks and food to with plenty of spots to sit and eat plus parking no matter how small matters here. They have crepes! The coffee house is mellow and welcoming opening in to a sitting room in muted colors with a large table to the left. The large windows with white trim lead in letting you see to the street even from the main of the coffee house with eth beams of sun wafting thru the panes. The place is cool the lighting dim and relaxing. The bare concrete floors mixing with the art work coveted walls and reclaimed or worn furniture give it a hipster chic feel. A  long bar houses the espresso machine, ice cream, beer tea and an assortment of treats takes up the back corner of the shop coaxing visitors to start with an  Con Panna and ending weather or not you want a beer and two scoops of ice cream too.
Review Source:The crepes are a-ok. Something I am sure I'll be back to try again.
As a coffee shop it is....alright. I've had my usual vanilla chai here, and I have to say, as much as I hate to, that I still prefer the taste of it from Starbucks. So when I come here, I'll probably be sticking to my italian sodas (affordable *and* delicious).
The location is great. I love the decor and the atmosphere inside. I kind of wish there was more room outside to sit. But they have a small lot in the back (a big plus for Bardstown Road businesses), a spacious interior, and are dog-friendly (ordering window and treats for the pooches).
All in all, not my fave, but I'm not mad at it either :-P
There are some pros and cons to Java which, when weighed out, equal a 4-star rating.
Pro: They serve freshly made crepes of the sweet AND savory variety
Pro: Sometimes you can get a $5 crepe and small coffee deal
Con: Baristas are inconsistent about whether that $5 deal is offered all the time on ANY crepe or just the crepe of the day. A few baristas this week have told me they are no longer doing that deal.
Pro: Even off "special" a crepe is only $5.81
Pro: The place has a good sized room with a large table able to be reserved in advance for a group
Pro: Even if the table says its reserved at 6:00 pm if you get there at 5:00pm and want to use it for an hour, you can
Pro: They've got a very comfy atmosphere. Fireplace, wooden accents, lounge-y couches.
Pro: They ALSO have a bunch of tables (that can be moved pretty easily) with wooden chairs for those who prefer the upright position
Pro: 2 beers for $5 from noon until close everyday
Pro: They offer a dark and a light coffee option. Though this may seem counter intuitive to some, light contains more caffeine so I usually opt for that and I've yet to be disappointed--by caffeine content or taste.
Con: They do not serve true iced COFFEE. They actually serve iced AMERICANO, which is a few shots of espresso poured over ice and more ice and water are added. I prefer drinking coffee, as opposed to espresso for the higher caffeine (coffee has more caffeine than espresso), and was very disappointed when I found out I couldn't get that on a hot summer day at Java.
Crepes and coffee? Sold. Finally made it in and am so glad I did. Great atmosphere, very casual and comfortable - perfect for a coffee shop whether getting some work done on your lap top or catching up with an old friend.
I was really pleases with the price - 5 bucks for a coffee and crepe. Both quite good. The crepe of the day was banana and brown sugar and I think cinnamon. YUM. My coffee was nicely flavored, strong but not over the top, and not at all bitter or grimy, which drives me crazy with some coffee shops!
This will be one of my new hangouts for knocking some work out. Super friendly helpful staff as well. I'll have to give it another go to see if this is the norm - I hope so!
What I like most about this place is the light. There are windows around the front and side and although the main room is very open and conversations carry there are also very good smaller spaces, corners, a side room with a table that seats a group, etc. I've only ordered soy lattes here but they appear to be offering a much wider variety of products than some of their competitors (f.e., Comfy Cow ice cream).
Review Source:We ran in when a huge storm hit, and being addicted to caffeine I had no problem using this as an excuse for a double espresso.
The service was of course, as everywhere in Louisville very nice. Â I love having random conversations with strangers, as my kids tell me, so since it wasn't busy I had a nice convo with the girls behind the counter about coffee beans.
The espresso was perfect, the ambiance the best place to wait out the wicked storm.
It is not Mexican if you use Frank's Louisiana Hot Sauce! Â I ordered a "Mexican Crepe" with green, red, and yellow bell peppers, red onion and cheese. Â It was good, but not Mexican. Â I am so angry that restaurants with zero knowledge of basic Mexican fare have the audacity to call a dish Mexican. Â It irks me as a self-described Mexican. Â
If my mother did not raise me right, I would have taken a flamethrower to the place. Â They had better been glad the coffee was good.
The good points about this place is I can sit here for hours either reading, working or playing a game of Scrabble with a friend. Â This place has a good vibe, but they must cease using the term "Mexican" for dishes when they do not even know what a real Mexican is...
Java has the best iced coffee in town. I am not a big fan of the Frankfort Ave location, but this has a cool vibe and I love that it is spacious and not super crazy crowded (yet). I had a nutella crepe the other day...delicious. And I really love that they serve Comfy Cow, too. It is nice to have options!
Prices are reasonable and it's close to home! Thankfully I can walk there, because parking is a little dicey during busy hours of Bardstown Road.
Went here for brunch with my hubs on Saturday afternoon. We were looking for a light breakfast-y meal, and as we drove by this new Java, I remembered I had heard about a crepe bar here, so we decided to check it out.
We ordered a ham and cheese crepe, a s'mores crepe, and we both got cafe au laits. There were three high school/college-age girls working that all looked overwhelmed, even though we hadn't had to wait in a line to order and the shop was more than half empty. We sat down and waited around ten minutes while the same girl that took our order made our crepes, then made our drinks. I'm not sure what the other 2 girls were doing during this time, but there didn't seem like there was much communication.
She brought us our drinks, then our crepes, but she had accidentally made an extra ham and cheese instead of one s'mores. She quickly apologized and went to make the s'mores crepe and brought it out a few minutes later, just as we finished the ham and cheese. The mistake wasn't a big deal, but the complaint we had was that the ham and cheese crepe was crunchy instead of tender like a thin pancake, like it had been overcooked. The ham was as good as they hype though, The s'mores crepe came out better and was really tasty. Our vanilla cafe au laits were good, and well made. I have no complaints about the girl who made our food and drinks, but the problem I have is the fact that she did it all on her own.
Overall it was a nice, light brunch, and really inexpensive ($10 for 2 crepes and 2 drinks). It's a really cool shop, and great tasting food and coffee when prepared correctly. They might still be working out opening kinks, but I think there needs to be more training or better management for employees. I might try it again in a few months, but until I have a better experience, I wouldn't recommend it.
Yikes. This is one cool building and a great location in town. The orientation on the street corner and the L-shaped coffee bar create a logical good-flowing space. Comfy living rooms and well-lit semi-private spaces make it comfy. Nice decor. Cool walkup window too.
On to my personal coffee experience here . . . Espresso extraction is a blend of craft and science. Ever hear of the "four M's" in Italian? La Miscela (beans) La Macchina (machine) La Macchinatura (grinder) and La Mano (the hand) . . . read God in a Cup, the ultimate book on coffee. But back to Java. I witnessed two bariste here extract espresso for 45 seconds and 60 seconds respectively. So much for the industry-respected, scientific standard of 23 - 29 seconds. So much for actually calibrating your machine and training the employees. Can we say "overextraction" and "astringent?"
YUK!!!! This was some of the worst espresso I've ever had in a coffee bar. It was alarming and shocking to watch the barista extract like this into a measuring cup (!) and then get back to his text messages . . . there's an obvious lack of training and/or knowledge and/or management. This experience reminded me of 1991 when friends bought an inexpensive machine for home and we thought just extracting espresso until the desired volume was achieved was how it was done. Yuk again. No excuse for a retail coffee bar to give this kind of product to a paying customer! Shame!!
Additionally, the beans used for espresso here are very, very dark roasted, which is clearly not the trend in third wave coffee. I never thought I'd say it, but "I'd rather go to Starbucks next time."
Screwing up espresso like this gets one star only because I have to give it some rating.
