Met a friend here for lunch today. Â Though I've passed by for many years, I've never had anyone to "meet" so I've never gone inside as I didn't want to saddle up to a bar by my lonesome. Â Found a close parking spot right on the street, though at night this might be trickier with the Mansion's proximity to Newport on the Levee. Â
I was welcomed warmly by the bartender, and saw my friend at a table near the back of the room. Â She and her husband come here often, and love it. Â I think I could, too. Â A completely relaxed atmosphere, where regulars are open and friendly and don't make you feel like you don't belong. Â
The lunch menu is simple and straightforward--sandwiches, soups, salads. Â The special today was a grilled ham and cheese on rye, and that sounded good on a cold, grey day. Â Served with pickles, tomato, lettuce and a pack of mayo on the side, and an order of fries, perfectly proportioned, perfectly grilled, Â An all around good lunch selection. Â
This is a bar, so there is smoking. Â Wasn't too bad at lunch, but I could see how it could get a little heady in there when crowded. Â Would love to come again and catch some live music, though.
If you are  looking for some great blues, jazz and/or vintage rock music, look no further than Mansion Hill. The place has a great vibe, but can be very smokey. On the night I visited, the average age skewed toward 30 something, probably a reflection of the type of music that was being played. It was "The Heaters" and they were great!
