I absolutely love this place. Â The food is out of this world good for the price. Â A Plate sets the standard for for favorite Thai dishes (Panang Curry and Pad See Eew). Also they have great unique dishes like the spicy chilli chicken that is the best Thai dish I've ever had. Â They give you free honey tea when you get there. Â The wait staff is friendly and lives to please. Â Overall, an outstanding value! Â Hands down my favorite Thai restaurant in the city.
Review Source:Ordered take-out for the first time from A Plate. First, the delivery was super fast! I think it came within 15-20 minutes and was hot when I opened it, which anyone can appreciate with delivery. The crag Rangoon was, as others mentioned, delicious; however, it could've been a bit more crispy. The pad see ew was bland, but that's what I expect and like. We ordered the pad Thai with chicken and specifically requested "no nuts". Unfortunately, nuts were covering the dish when we opened it and it was thrown out, which was a terrible waste! We received the baby egg rolls free with an online coupon...they were okay, nothing special. For the price, speed of delivery and overall quality, we'll probably try it again. Not the greatest, but better than most Thai delivery in the area that I've tried.
Review Source:I've never dined here, but have ordered take-out numerous times from A Plate on Southport. Â I'm not a Thai food expert so I can't judge on authenticity, but I can judge on taste and everything I've ordered here is delicious! Â You can't go wrong with the Pad Thai or anything else for that matter. Â
The staff is as nice as they come - to the point where during the 15 minutes after I leave their restaurant I'm in a happy mood that is nice to anyone I come across and I'm typically an A-hole. Â When you call in an order they typically say it'll be 15 minutes. Â One time I came a little early and had to wait a few minutes. Â Well they gave me free spring rolls since I had to wait... They weren't late, I was early and had no problem waiting and they still threw in some free spring rolls. Â They definitely know how to keep the customer happy that's for sure.
Oh, and their prices are very reasonable so why not give them a try?! Â I'm actually ordering take-out from them tonight!
Needed a spot to deliver on a freezing winter night. I called and asked how the panang curry was. She recommended I give it a shot so I did. I wasn't overly hungry, but was told there was a minimum and would have to order something else. Usually I wouldn't mind, but the place is literally 2 blocks away! I asked what she recommended for an appetizer and was given the crab rolls in curry sauce. They were good and crunchy.
In all I enjoyed the food, but it was probably not worth the money. The panang curry was overly peanut-y tasting, but still had a kick. Again, good, but not great...
Next time I will likely look to try a different place, though I would try a noodle based dish and pick it up to avoid the $2.50 delivery fee on top of the minimum charge if I was to try again.
Cute family byob Thai restaurant. Â Small. Â Clean. Â
We were greeted with warm tea that was very sweet and delicious, hit the spot after a long cold walk, and they offered a refill which we gratefully accepted.
Basic Thai dishes are $8, while other menu items were generally $12.
We stuck with basics and ordered basil chicken and tofu pad Thai. Â The basil chicken was ordered medium spicy, and it didn't disappoint, probably more spicy than other Thai restaurants' definition of medium spicy, which was fine by me. Â It was tasty, served with large chicken chunks and a lot of sauce, and multicolor peppers that were cooked perfectly, not crunchy. Â the pad Thai was also excellent, and interestingly, it came with some shredded cabbage in the dish. Â More tangy, more taste than typical pad Thai, and they were generous with the tofu.
Service was super-fast. Â
A great choice, wish we lived closer!
You pick your wardrobe based of appearance, you pick your children based on appearance, so its only logical to choose your food based on appearance as well! Wait that doesn't seem right...
It's BYOB, so crack open your favorite Trader Joe's wine and make sure you have that Iphone at hand to instagram some great food pictures. A Plate on Southport has got presentation on lockdown, from the crab rangoons shaped like wrapped candies to the flower shaped carrots that were in our entrees!
We were the only ones eating in on a Sunday night, they did lots of take out business though. Two small tables on the first floor and a cute lofted seating area as well. Rice entrees are $8-$9 and you can get at least two meals out of them so your getting a great value and a nice atmosphere.
The crab rangoons were quite possible the best i've ever had, creamy and flavorful, though in full disclosure I have about 20 favorite crab rangoons. Chili nutty chicken (mild spice) was okay... but honestly the chicken had a weird flavor which I am 99% sure was just the sauce because it seemed like great quality, but no one likes to have that 1% of doubt in the back of your mind. The menu does say chicken with onions but I like to sneak in veggies wherever possible so would have enjoyed more. My dining companion got the Spicy Cashew Chicken and I got herthe leftovers, delicious with lots of fresh veggies!
Judging from the other reviews I almost feel like a different restaurant must have delivered my food (I even double-checked the receipt!). I've been trying to find a decent Thai place that will deliver to the Logan Square area and gave this a whirl. The two stars are purely for the fast service as my food came well within the projected delivery time. Truth be told I almost wish it hadn't arrived at all. The potstickers were turning soggy and the dipping sauce a rather confusing burnt-tasting gloop.
The meat in the pad see eiw was at least decent quality but the dish was cold, under-seasoned and tasted, frankly, kind of nasty.
A truly unpleasant experience. Never again.
My flatmate had told me about A Plate on Southport since I have a great love for Thai cuisine. I remembered the location she gave, recalling that there was a Thai restaurant in that same spot previously that I loved. I figured I would give A Plate on Southport a try.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Management had changed, but not the quality of the food. The tom yum shrimp came spicy the way I requested it. The panang, although a bit thinner than I prefer, was still full of bloom in flavour. As much as I loved to go to the previous location that was in what is now A Plate on Southport, I will return to this present location on a regular basis.
My husband and I have been here twice in September 2012. We love the food, the atmosphere, the ambiance, and the staff.
It has only two small tables on the first floor and a loft area up a flight of stairs that is very pleasant. The decor is modern. They allow BYOB.
The food is very FRESH. Unlike some restaurants, they cook the food right then and there, not taking shortcuts by reheating things like the meat used in some of the stir fry dishes. Anyway our meat and vegetables were cooked fresh both times.
Some restaurants have music that is so loud that you feel almost sick (often, Chipotle), but the staff doesn't care. This place had the music a tiny bit loud one of the times I was there and asked them to turn it down some; they did so. The next time is was already at just the right level.
If you have trouble navigating stairs, I recommend you call for a reservation for the ground level tables which would hold about 4 people.
This place is very small, so I wouldn't recommend it for children unless yours can sit still awhile. There is no place for them to walk around, and the place is small.
Parking in this area is quite easy.
After reading the positive reviews we were hopeful, but left disappointed. The curry was watery, with the odd addition of cabbage and peanuts. Pad se ew seemed like it was the victim of end-of-the-day beef, and the noodles were OK, but just.
We took a risk and tried the bacon wrapped sausage skewer, and that was probably the only expectation fully met: not great.
I could have given it 4 stars because the music was a bit loud and there aren't any furnishings to absorb excess sound. But when I asked the waiter to turn it down, he did right away, and then it was very pleasant. His service was excellent.
I have gone to many Thai restaurants and ordered 2 of my favorite dishes, Pad See Yew with beef and Rama Chicken. Pad See Yew usually tastes good, but often the beef is kind of flavorless and tough. This beef was flavorful and FRESHLY cooked. Sometimes Rama sauce is almost soup, but usually tastes all right. But I have had chicken that was not only flavorless, but day old flavorless. Not here. The chicken was fresh and tender and the sauce very tasty. It does allow BYOB.
My only suggestion would be that you ask that they add more vegetables and especially Chinese brocolli if the dish has brocolli because they do have that available. I personally like more vegetables and a little less beef.
The place is small and, being a bistro, has a tasteful, bright, modern look. There are two tables on the ground level and maybe 6 or 8 up a flight of stairs. I think the bathrooms are downstairs, so if you have trouble with stairs you should know that. They do take reservations, and if you have a hard time with stairs you should reserve the table(s) on the ground level, which would seat 4 or 5.
I have a hard time understanding how Sara S. could give it only 3 stars overall.
For a small place there is a wide variety of food available on the menu, even some "Americanized" dishes which look very good.
A Plate on Southport has very good Thai food at extremely reasonable prices (and BYOB!). The Pad See Ew was excellent as was the Tiliapia dish. They have limited indoor seating, a small patio, and a bustling delivery portion of business. Attentive service. We will definitely be coming back soon having their food delivered.
Review Source:this place is a hidden gem. have walked by here many times and never noticed it. the place does not seem to be ever crowded.
they have a cute patio on southport that caters to about 8 guests. food is delicious and they always seem to have something new on the menu. the dish with the pinneapple and cashews is great.
far better choice for thai than the other options on diversey and nearby.
staff are super friendly and very welcoming. i believe they also deliver
Despite being small and relatively empty, my friend and I decided to give this place a shot. We had the place to ourselves, for the most part, which was nice. It's like a hole in the wall but nicer than you would expect.
And the food was such a surprise for such a tiny place. We got the vegetable spring rolls and they were pretty good. The yellow curry and pad thai (just going for the classics tonight) were amazing!! I was so extremely impressed. I don't even live in Lincoln Park but I might go out of my way in the future to get some carry out.
My only suggestion for the owner is to maybe work on the decor of the place. Hole in the wall, yes, so I guess it's to be expected. But we felt like we were in a childs bedroom with the butterfly and plant stencils on the wall. And all the other things they randomely had up as well. The place has a lot of potential for being super super cute but they need someone who knows how to decorate a space to help them. (sorry, esthetics are important to me, as trivial as it may seem)
4 stars based in 1 of the dishes we ordered and the service.
3 stars overall.
Ordered take out, but then place did look nicer than the average Thai restaurant inside. Called around 8:30 on a friday night and our 2 dishes would be ready in 15. Great!
I ordered pad kee mao, which was definitely the stand out. Tons of veggies and not greasy, which is always a huge plus. I also got egg drop soup, which really shouldn't have been called egg soup. It wasn't very salty, and again, not greasy, however it lacked any great flavor. Didn't taste like traditional egg drop soup. I wouldn't get that again.
My bf got bangkok noodles, which were decent. Hardly any veggies though, so it was kind of 2 dimensional- noodles and ground chicken.
When I called I mentioned I saw a coupon for free egg rolls with $20 purchase. (yes, we were very hungry). We were up to $19, but she said I could still use it. Great customer service. Â I didn't try those, bug my bf finished them all.
I would go back for the pad kee mao.
Without Groupon, I don't think I would have noticed this little Thai spot hidden on Southport. Â The small, bi-level restaurant has an outdoor seating area, and a comfortably air conditioned interior. Â It has a cute bistro feel, clean and bright with small touches that I appreciated, like the flowers on the glasses, and the hints of green that nicely accented the dark tables and chairs. Â Service was delightful, as the young, bubbly owner greeted us and brought our tasty plates while trekking up the stairs (joking that she loved the exercise since it meant not having to go to the gym). Â The lunch special included an appetizer and a canned Coke product (I heart pineapple Fanta)! Â We started with pot stickers, presented on a square plate with a colorful sprinkling of brunoise peppers and a tiny soy sauce container that was so cute, I think it made the soy sauce taste better. Â Next were the entrees, beef pad thai and a peanut chicken dish with thick rice noodles. Â The beef was a bit overcooked, but the flavors were good. Â I would stick with the chicken next time, as the thin slices were tender in the other dish. Â We also had a small mistake on our order (chicken instead of beef), but they quickly corrected it. Â I'll be back next time I'm craving Thai.
Review Source:Remember a few years ago when Thai cuisine exploded across the country, and then Thai restaurants starting popping up everywhere? Well Chicago is no stranger to that concept, but I'm really surprised that with all these Thai places I can't find a nice sit down Thai restaurant. Most restaurants cater to a dine-in/take-out crowd, which is fine but where do I go for a nice Thai restaurant? Really readers, help a girl out. Maybe I'm biased by growing up next to one of the best Thai restaurants - Old Siam in Gaithersburg, MD.
Following Yelp guides and reviews, I guided my visiting mom to A Plate. Like all the reviews, the place is small, but very nicely organized with some outdoor seating in nice weather. The place is BYOB, which is fine since I usually go for a Thai iced tea. We got the Candy, which was adorable and tasty. The Pad was al dente, which is the correct way of cooking rice noodles. Like italian pasta, there is a correct way of cooking rice noodles. If you're getting a mushy mess, that's wrong. Surprisingly the crispy tilapia was delicious. This is one of the few tilapia dishes that I have actually liked. The fish was tender on the inside, crispy on the outside, and came with this sweet relish on top. This must be attributed to the fact that everything is made to order. There's no batch of something sitting around to be plated. As a result things come out a little slowly, but the service is very friendly.
If you're in the area, have a few moments time to sit and relax, and want some Thai, I would stop by. However, it's still not the sit down place I'm looking for.
This restaurant is a hidden gem. I went here on a Saturday night, and I am surprised it was not more crowded. We brought a bottle of wine and sat outside on their cute, tiny patio. We ordered spring rolls and the Tom Kha soup to start, and both were great. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao, and the noodles were absolutely delicious. The services was awesome and so were the prices.
Review Source:It's between a 3 and 4, but w/ the high expectation and hence disappointment, a 3.
I saw the rare 5star review on yelp and venture in with high expectation. Â The price is good for a $4 tom yam with 3 big shrimps. Â But.... Â I've never tasted tom yam this sweet? Â I've had other authentic that are not like this.
The pad see eww is too sweet? Â I know there should a be some sweetness in it, but this is too sweet. Â the penang curry noodle is tooooo salty. Â Making me and hubby thirst for water the entire night. Â Â
I guess it should be categorized as a cute joint that serve Americanized Asian food. Â They call themselves Asian bistro, so I guess I am a bit misled by how yelp categories this as thai.
Great friendly staff. Â beaware that they add $1 if you opt for shrimp instead of beef on the dishes. Â It's typical for all thai restaurant. Â but they didn't list it on the menu, and that's a small mishap....
After searching on Yelp for yet another Chicago Thai place, we found that A Plate had great reviews. After first walking into the tiny restaurant we thought to ourselves, "Are we in the right place?"
Yep. We were.
In a city with more Thai restaurants than trees, it's hard to stand out. But A Plate on Southport--despite it's odd decor and even stranger name--far surpasses any Thai cuisine we've eaten in the city (and we've eaten a lot of it).
There are lots of little things that make this place great:
1. Even though the wall decals of a couple of children swinging in an oak tree don't exactly scream "Hey! It's a Thai restaurant!", the small loft-like space is actually really charming. We've been able to easily get a table in this 15-20 seat joint both times.
2. The staff couldn't be friendlier. I get the impression that a family runs this place. After joking that it tasted like "momma" was in the kitchen, we heard the waiter introduce an older woman as "the chef." It probably is momma. And when you order an appetizer, they'll put a mustard smiley face on the plate.
3. Don't let the smiley face throw you. The presentation of the food is as good as many fine dining establishments.
4. The food is FRESH. And I mean the vegetables are still crisp, the rice noodles aren't soggy, and the fried fixings are light and crunchy. I'm so used to getting a pile of over-sauced, flaccid (yeah, I went there) noodles from the various Thai places around the city. This stuff tastes like it was just to order. And it that's because it was.
So far, of the things we've tried (all of which were delicious), the standouts are the pad see ew, the tom yum soup, the bangkok noodles (my favorite--on the specials list), the "crispy candy" (best crab rangoon I've had), and the panang curry, which is more savory and less sweet than most.
I'm anxious to go back and try more stuff of their menu, which boasts dishes that I've never seen anywhere else, including "American Fried Rice" which has fried hot dogs, chicken wings and a fried egg. (Can that be bad? Don't think so.)
yum! Â just had a nice Groupon lunch there. Â 3 in the afternoon. Â nobody else in the building. Â peace. Â quiet. Â ahhhh...
the yellow curry with chicken might be the best i've had in the city. Â and the thai custard on sweet sticky rice is right on!
the staff...so nice! Â talked with my server at length about her time living in bangkok and my trip to thailand to help with the tsunami relieft effort.
definitely going back with my wife.
I'm torn between 3 or 4 stars, but I'll bump it up since my friend told me too. It is small in there. When we walked in, I initially thought it was more of a carry out place since I only saw 2 tables for 2 in there, but there is a upstairs which is still not too big. We were the only ones up there.
We ordered:
Iced Coffee Freeze - It was ok, but started to get sweet at the end.
Thai Fish Cake - These were ok, but smaller than we expected, but the sauce it came with was good.
Chicken Satay Stick - I thought this was good. Very moist and juicy. The peanut sauce was good, but gets a bit sweet after awhile.
Beef Satay Stick - I had a little of this and thought it was a bit tough. I'll go with the chicken satay.
Panang Curry with Chicken - I ordered this and thought it was pretty oily. Which we thought was a bit weird. Flavor was pretty good, but still missing something.
Lime Chicken - My friend ordered this and I thought the chicken was breaded nicely, but not much of a lime taste and sometimes a bit too much mayo.
We wished they gave us a bigger plate than what they put the rice on as there really wasn't much room for anything else.
It's a nice place for a date, but not sure how we would feel if there was more people upstairs as it's pretty small. Server was very nice and attentive.
Food - 3
Ambiance - 4
Service - 5
Since Susan R. stated that she'll agree with everything I say here, I will assert that I am the smarter, funnier one in the relationship. Everything she said is true, the service was beyond friendly and accommodating. I felt like we could've hung out there all night and still been happily told to take our time. We ordered an appetizer, soup and entree to share, and they brought out two bowls so we could share the Wonton soup, and we didn't even ask. It's a good thing too, because I might have eaten the whole bowl otherwise. I'm also the more gluttonous one, you see. But all that food only ran us about $20 and definitely filled us up, with leftovers to spare.
Anyway, the veggie rolls were unique and fresh, with a thicker roll material than I'm used to. I don't know what it was, but I liked it. It felt almost as thick as a wonton wrapper. These rolls had grilled tofu and veggies in them, and a sweet sauce drizzled over them. There was also shredded egg on top. It tasted great and looked really cool too. And then there was some mustard for dipping, which was presented on the plate as two smiley faces! How freaking cute is that?
The Pad Kee Mao was honestly one of the best dishes I've had in quite a while. The chicken was cooked perfectly (I often feel like it's overcooked, but not here!) and the "medium" spiciness level was right on the cusp of being too spicy, which also made it perfect. We're not wimps about spice, so bear that in mind when you're ordering.
Â
The restaurant itself is small, with the bulk of the seating upstairs. There are probably 6 or so tables. There is a very clean bathroom downstairs near the kitchen. The decor is cute, and there's a really neat mosaic floor downstairs. And you should go eat there like now. Or order out. I have no idea how this place wasn't packed with people when we went. Citizens of Chicago, you are doing yourself a real disservice if you aren't dining at (oddly named but crazy good) A Plate on Southport.
Every once in a while you visit a restaurant and leave with such a positive feeling that you can't wait to get to a computer to Yelp it.
This is one of those places.
I'm sure that once Quinn E has a chance, she will write a far more eloquent review, and if so... read Quinn's and just know that I second every WORD of it.
This place should be packed  ALL.  OF.  THE.  TIME.
Excellent Vegetable rolls, excellent wonton soup, excellent Pad Kee Mao. Â
Very good prices and honestly the nicest service I've received at a Thai restaurant in  a good long while (and Thai restaurants tend to be on the 'fairly amazing' side of the service spectrum).
They offer take out, dine in (there is additional seating upstairs) and apparently is also BYOB (no liquor on the menu if you forget to BYOB)... super cool.
Loved it. Â Seriously loved it.
Found this place online, and all I can say is wow! Amazing service and even better food. Small, quaint, perfect to have a nice affordable dinner. I was astonished at how clean this establishment was. And it was so adorable because the server kept asking me how my food was and if the flavors complimented each other well. I could tell she genuinely cared about our dining experience. I will definitely go back!
Review Source:This place rocks!!!!!! Before to enjoy the nightlife of Chicago 10 of my friends decided to have a thai treat and we were not disappointed.
This place is fairly quiet and small but it is ridiculously cheap. $10 of a wonderful pad thai. Coming from DC, this was a given for me. PT was big enough, perfectly spiced and so good. I am not a huge Thai food person so PT is usually my go to dish.
This place is BYOB which, for once in my life, I was happy about it. Service is great and quick. I didn't really try the other dishes on the table but everyone was extremely satisfied with their food.
Yay! I am a fan.
I'm a restaurant manager in the area and this place is phenomenal. They've completely revamped everything. Looks amazing and the food is great. I ordered the Pad See Ew with tofu and immediately texted two of my friends to tell them how good it was.
Management/employees are friendly and helpful. A+++
Very cute little Thai restaurant. Ordered take out bc I live in the area and it was ready in 20 mins. Had the cucumber salad, pad thai, spicy basil, and Rama chicken. Overall, everything was very good but the spicy basil was def the best dish. Seems family owned and operated, which is a nice change of pace. Also, the girl working the counter was super friendly.
Review Source:I tried the Spicy Tilapia which is their signature plate. The fish was very well done and was fresh also. It tasted awesome with the rice and sauce that it came with. It was one of the best that I tried so far at thai restaurants. There was a lot of food for $14 price. I was very full and satisfied after the meal. For desert I had the HaloHalo with Sticky Rice. It contained vanilla ice cream on top with sticky sweet rice on the bottom with palm seeds on the side. The three blended perfectly together. It was amazing! I would recommend everyone to try. The waitress was very nice and fast. Whenever my glass was empty, she filled it with water right away. As for the restaurant itself, it was very clean and the decor wasn't overwhelming like some other restaurants I tried. It looked very sophisticated to me. I highly recommend you to try A Plate on Southport.
