    This place was wonderful.

My boyfriend took me here after I begged him to. We had the empanadas, cheese appetizer and split a filet. That was plenty for us.

We plan on taking our friends in the next few weeks!

And we will definately bring a bottle of wine next time!

I know I like to give out 5 stars, but you really have to earn it with me!
This time, Tango Sur gets 4 stars. I have given them 5 stars before, I'm sure I will again, but this time they didn't deserve it. Sorry! I like you guys so much, I love the atmosphere, but this last visit wasn't as great as my previous experiences. I think the main thing that was off was the steak. I don't know, usually your steak blows me and my guests away. This time it was just okay. And, you know what? Your prices are so reasonable, I don't even care! I will definitely come back. Without a doubt.

My sister and I yelped this place before coming on our trip to Chicago and are very happy we did- it was the best thing we ate during our trip! We got a chicken and beef empanadas, which were delicious, especially with the chimichurri sauce. I got the bife vesuvio, which really lived up to its name! The steak was sitting on a plate full of the garlic and white wine sauce- it really looked like there was a lava explosion. The steak was stuffed with a white mar del plata cheese and spinach. Every bite was so flavorful. It also comes with that awesome chimichurri! I can't get enough of it! I had to give up on the potatoes so that I could finish my steak.

It was my sister's birthday and they gave her a birthday flan with a little candle in it, which was very yummy too and not too sweet.

I wish we had brought some wine, but we didn't because my sister doesn't drink wine. But EVERYONE had a bottle or two, so definitely bring a bottle or you will feel out of place! lol!

Its super dark inside and all the tables are lit with candles. There were a lot of couples on dates as well as some huge birthday parties. The servers are really friendly and efficient. I can't think of any other steakhouse or restaurant that is SO worth it for the price! I would definitely recommend this to anyone coming to this area!

Over a year later, we finally came back to Tango Sur. It is such a deal for your money, I can't believe we don't come more often.

In this go around, I discovered that their eggplant parmasean is amazing - a blob of cheesy and smooth perfection.

I also found that I always order my steaks medium-rare, but at Tango Sur, where they are serious about their meats, I should order medium. As to which, I now attribute myself not a true steak eater :)

The cuts of meat are the best in Chicago and they have a staff that is top notch. The music, vibe and top notch staff makes this one of my favorite places to eat out. There are no reservations so you may have to wait your turn.

Tango Sur was delicious and the perfect place for a surprise birthday party with a big group. The empanadas, provoleta, and salad were a wonderful beginning to our dinner. Our entrees were huge and the steaks were savory. I had the filet with a side of spinach mashed potatoes, which was fantastic. All for about $40, you can't get any better than this popular BYOB.

Tango Sur had been on my to-do list for a while, and I finally got the chance to visit last night for a birthday dinner.

The empanadas were fantastic. I tried the beef and the spinach & cheese. I was surprised to prefer the spinach & cheese. They came with chimichurri, which I think might be my new favorite condiment.

I chose the boneless ribeye, medium (at the server's suggestion). It was bigger than my head, and I do have quite a massive head, so that's saying something. It was preceded by a pointless salad, and came with some completely extraneous potato wedges. The steak was perfectly tender, charred, juicy, savory, and generally delicious. The accompaniment of another bowl of chimichurri was great for dipping.

We didn't order dessert, but they delivered a plate of delicious flan topped with dulce de leche anyway.

    Leftovers: lots of meat.

    BYOM (Bring Your Own Malbec).

This is still my favorite steak in Chicago. BYOB makes this even more fun with a wine shop across the street. Ive been frequenting this establishment for many years. The best Argentine restaurant in Chicago.. you may experience a wait but I promise you'll find it worthwhile.

Went there 10/1 for my anniversary and the place is amazing. The staff is very attentive and my filet was great. There is not a better steak for the money anywhere in the city.

Salad is meh, bread is hit or miss, steaks are awesome.

BYOB and no res required for a couple. Solid date night spot.

Can be busy during peak times, but the steaks are worth suffering through the wait, salad, and bread.

I came here last week for my birthday and of course everything was amazing.  Lucky for me, there was no wait.  In fact, we arrived to a practically empty restaurant and were seated immediately.  I've been here once before and had to wait awhile then.  Maybe it was my birthday luck!

Anyhow, this place has great quality food and great atmosphere.

BYOB w/ no corkage fee! Yes, Please! Got my bottle of wine in hand!

So my boyfriend and I wanted to try a non traditional steakhouse for his birthday and this seem to fit the bill. For the both of us it was about $60 with tip for 2 steaks! We went there on a Friday night and got there at 5:45 and were seated right away. Parking also wasn't bad because we got there early.

My boyfriend got the Bife vesuvio steak filled with spinach and cheese, I grabbed a bite and it was pretty yummy. I got the vacio, which was the flap meat steak. It had good flavor but a little to chewy for my liking. I didn't care to much for the potatoes that came with the meals. I saw someone else get french fries and I wish I had known cause I would have preferred french fries or even mashed. It is a little to dark in there and the menu is kind of confusing, the waiter did his best trying to explain the menu to us.

My recommendation for this place is to bring an Argentinian with you. According to her, probably the best Argentine restaurant in Chicago. Caveat: the long wait. No joke, 3 hours, but if you bring an Argentinian they will at least get sassy enough with the host to move your wait along. The place is cramped with a closet-sized "waiting room" or do what we did and run next door to the pub.

The food is good, really good. Skip out on the fluff and head straight for the meat. The empanadas are amazing. They come with a chimichurri sauce, which I loved but was scolded that it really doesn't go with empanadas. Who cares if you love it, drown your food in it. We shared a charcoal grill of different meats and beef parts (sweetbreads, blood sausage, flank, skirt). All delicious and mind you very heavy. You could feel the heartburn. The restaurant is BYOB which is a plus for you alcoholics on a budget.

I haven't been here enough to figure out the best method for avoiding await but it appears that if you travel in groups larger than 8 you can make reservations, but please don't be the obnoxious party of 20 on Saturday (you know who you are, and yes death glares were directed at you!)

What a spot for our valentines day dinner. Got there at 5:55 and was told we had an hour wait. 15 minutes later we had a table! Even without the other two in our party! Score. They opened our wine as soon as we sat.
We ordered the provoleta appetizer. Get it! It's just a plate of melted cheese! Yummmmm.
I ordered the filet with spinach mashed potatoes. The filet was a perfect medium rare however it could have been more tender. The red wine sauce that came with it made up for that. As did the other olive oil based sauce on the side. As for the mashed potatoes...well I could eat those everyday for the rest of my life.
And for dessert, flan! Covered in an orgasmic caramel sauce.
I will be back to tango sur! Especially since its just a few blocks away...dangerous!

Tango Sur is our annual valentine day spot. It is very dark and intimate inside. Both the food and service are phenomenal. For appetizer we always get the empanadas (all the flavors taste good). This time I got a seasoned chicken breast with a side of mashed potatoes. The chicken was delicious and the mashed potatoes were made from scratch and absolutely amazing. Also, the filet is of very high quality and we get it every time we are there. The only downside is the wait. If you have a party of 6 or more you can make a reservation otherwise you have to wait in this small cute room where you can drink your byob while you wait.

This BYOB restaurant was the perfect venue for a date this week.

Atmosphere: I loved the darker setting of the place and how everything was pretty much just left to candle light to set the mood (oh la la).  There's two separate rooms and then a back area were you can sit and wait for your table. We had a reservation and our table was ready right when we were so there was no wait, but I can see the back area as a good place to be able to start drinking your wine if you're waiting for your table and you're not in the way of everyone else that is dining.

Staff: Our server Daniel was great, he was incredible patient with us since we took a long time to order. (too busy talking) He was attentive during the entire meal, as were the other staff that was quick to make sure our water glasses were full the entire time. (both worse than an empty water glass when you're thirsty).

Food: The food like everyone else says is beyond amazing! The portion sides are huge (yay for left-overs for lunch, which had co-workers drooling).  We both ordered the filet (med rare) and it came out perfection.  They use the perfect amount of seasoning and the meat is just so great.  Exactly what I wanted. Ask at Tango Sur, and you shall receive.  We decided to pass on dessert, but Daniel surprised us with some amazing flan.  Unreal.

The littlest things can add OR take away from a good experience. To me adding in a dessert was just the cherry on top!  We were one of the last people in the restaurant that night, and never once did I feel pressure that we needed to hurry up and leave, but left us to our own time, which I feel was much appreciated.

This is definitely is a place I will return to again, and again, and again.

I've been at Tango Sur few times, and always enjoy their food. It is delicious!!!! Always fresh-cooked and  flavored. BYOB also helps to keep your bill at decent level. I love their empanadas and a grilled meat. I can not give them 5 stars only for the reason that I can not make a reservation ahead of time for the party of less than 6 people, and the waiting time is unbelievable long, especially on the weekend.
I love this place, and I hope that they can change their reservation policy.

Let me start off by saying the chimchurri (spelling?) sauce is AMAZING! The wait here is a little long but there is a nice intimate area in the back to wait instead of being out in the cold. Amazing grilled chicken, steak, and veggies, loved it all. The only issue I had was the music, pretty loud so I had to scream across the table for my boyfriend to hear me, left with a sore throat at the end of the night.

Tango Sur is the perfect date night restaurant. In fact, it's nearly flawless in all aspects. I love that it's BYOB, and the entrees I sampled here were generous and rich. We had enough left over to create a second meal that was just as filling as the first.

When we dined here last November, we started with two empanadas: the spinach & cheese and the beef. We followed these up with two entrees: el filet (fillet mignon topped with a red onion wine sauce and served with spinach mashed potatoes) and bife vesuvio (prime steak filed with spinach and mar del plata cheese and garlic).

Although I knew the servings were going to be heaping, I was still stunned to see that my fillet mignon was actually two perfectly prepared steaks, well complimented by the spinach mashed potatoes. The green lump on my plate was a little odd-looking but tasted heavenly.

The bife vesuvio was also delicious, although, quite honestly, we felt it was even better the second day.

Tango Sur is a bit noisy - my boyfriend initially thought that his parents would enjoy the restaurant but decided it was a bad idea since his father would not be able to hear a word anyone was saying. We even struggled a bit, and this was on a Monday night.

Still, I liked this aspect of the experience. Even on that snowy Monday night, the room was alive with conversation, as diners enjoyed their exquisite food and wine
    .
My time at Tango Sur was so wonderful that I cannot wait to go back. I am hesitant, though, to do so on a weekend. I wish they took reservations, as I can see from other reviews that this seems to be one of their failings. I can only speak for my own experience, though, which was perfectly fine. Fortunately, our anniversary fell on a Monday, so we had no problem getting a table. The restaurant did fill up, though, so if you're planning to go at a peak time, be prepared to wait.

From my experience, though, it's definitely worth it.

We ate this restaurant for my future sister in laws birthday & it was pretty interesting. Great atmosphere with low lighting.

I don't know if I have ever been to a restaurant that had a BYOB policy. It's awesome. We got to bring our own liquor and drink it at the restaurant & they didn't charge any kind of fee. Saved us a lot of money on the bill. The food was delicious & a bit different. The free bread was warm & soft. The chicken empanadas were delicious. Also, I had "el filet" w/ spinach mashed potatoes. The filet was tender & had a nice onion sauce.

I gave this place a 4 star because of the service. I felt like I had to constantly repeat what I wanted. Also, we were there & had a party of 10 & they were rushing us stating that we had to be done with the table by 9. I thought it was a bit rude especially because we were there for a birthday party, but the BYOB made up for it.

The food, ambiance and service was great once we were finally seated. I called a week in advance to make a reservation as we had a party of six and had never been there before. Upon arrival (5 mins. early for our 8:30 reservation) we were told there is a 30 min wait regardless of reservation. This was annoying, wants the point in making a reservation? Others were complaining and waiting as well but we quickly discovered that they put their names in just that evening. We grabbed drinks down the street and came back at 9, table still wasn't ready. Waited another 15 mins and were finally seated about 45 mins late. Not a good process so be prepared to patron the neighboring bars...

Went on date with husband last weekend to Tango Sur and I cannot stop thinking about how delicious our dinner was!

We started by sampling the empanadas. We had the spinach/cheese, beef, and chicken. The spinach/cheese and beef are amazing, the chicken I could live without.
My husband and I split the El Filet (two 7oz fillets served with spinach mashed potatoes). There was plenty of food for us both to share, we both left stuffed!
Tango Sur has the best chimichurri sauce...there wasn't a drop left on my plate.

I can't wait to go back again. Great plate to take out-of-towners.

Food: Really good steaks for a good value.  Plus, a non-sushi BYOB is always a nice change.

BUT:  My party of 2 waited THREE HOURS and 11 minutes for a table...to be honest the food was quite good but not worth the wait.  Come on, you can't squeeze in two people?!?  The doorman was not accommodating (and kind of rude) and the estimated 1.5 hour wait dragged out even after we went back twice to ask what was up.  If he had said three hours from the beginning we would not have waited.

The Empanadas is highly recomended.  Other menu is delicious, the steak is huge in a very affordable price.
but it's too loud, definitely not a good place for your first date..
Service was good, quick and friendly.
I definitely will go back there.

This place is absolutely incredible. It's has such a cool, local Chicago feel. Group dinners are money here. The food is delicious, the portions are huge and it is not very expensive (2 filets, mashed potatoes, and a salad is like $27). BYOB adds that much more to the experience.

With that said you must go in knowing a few things:
    1. They can be a little rude
    2. You will always wait, even if you have a reservation
    3. This isnt a prime steakhouse, they under/over cook the steaks slightly sometimes

Woohooo! If you're looking for an amazing steak for a good price look no further. This place is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The atmosphere is very romantic and friendly. It's BYOB so you can bring a couple bottles of wine in and get a little tipsy before you have an amazing steak. The only downside is that I always spill steak all over my shirt because I eat it so ferociously.

Came here for New Years Eve dinner with a party of 11 and had an amazing dinner!

The BF and I got there first and we were shown to a back waiting room that had corkscrews and empty glasses waiting - win!  We were seated on time although the position of our table wasn't the best (right in front of the door that kept opening in the freezing cold).  It was a bit tight fitting everyone but we're all friends anyways.

The server was helpful and didn't make us feel rushed.  We started with empanadas and the spinach and cheese one was definitely my favorite item of the night.  I could have eaten about 5 of them for my dinner.

The salads that came before our entrees were underwhelming and looked like they belonged as burger toppings.  But the entrees were delicious!  I got the Bife de Chorizo which came with amazing potatoes.  I'm sad I lost the leftovers box somewhere along the night during the New Years festivities.  BF got some sort of chicken with baked ham and cheese on top which was yummy.

Love that it is BYOB and prices are definitely reasonable.  I'm putting it on my list for when my family comes to town next.

This is one of Chicago's gems! Always a treat to go to Tango Sur because the Argentinian food here is truly fabulous. It is located in a beautiful location with lots of boutique shopping and the Music Box theater. The outdoor patio is a perfect setting for a date. And NOBODY does chimichurri better than Tango Sur!!!!

Went here last night on a whim (I visit a couple of times a year) and was not disappointed. Do try the El Filet.....where, I ask you, can you get two filet mignon steaks cooked to perfection for under $30? And they have a share option! The spinach potatoes that come with the dish are great and have something in them I can't put my finger on. Also had the empanadas, tomato and egg salad, and the flan for dessert. All were delicious but, the flan is simply the best mouth-gasm I've ever had.

The ambience is sexy and provides the perfect backdrop an intimate evening. The candlelight is something more restaurants need to get back to doing. Word of advice, unless you show up before 6pm, THERE WILL BE A WAIT! Plan accordingly, and if you are hosting a dinner here, perhaps you should go early to make the reservation and allow for them to accomodate your group size. I also would not advise taking the little ones to this particular restaurant, it is not child friendly. It is BYOB (what is better than that!) so feel free to tote in your beverage choice, I've even seen tequila bottles and tecate cans on tables so, there ya go! The service is warm and efficient. This place is run like a well oiled machine and has never disappointed.

Go to Tango Sur, they have some of the best steaks in Chicago!

Tango Surrrr....yumm....thinking about this place makes me drool again; that being said, unfortunately none of my other dining companions seems to share the same sentiments,,so let me just give some advice on how to enjoy this place to the max!!!

    1) this is NOT a prime steakhouse,so don't expect to get meats that melts in your mouth a la wagyu beefs...their beef can get a bit grainy, but my steak came out fine and my wife's veal was pretty good.

    2) they are NOT known as a salad joint either,so if they say the foods comes with salad, and all they bring is a small plate of lettuce, onions, and tomato slices with not even a dressing; that's probably because they probably expects you to be carnivores and the salads are just there to make your wife....or your teenage daughters happy.

    3) Be adventerous. When you see tounges served as appetizers and sweetbreads as a sidedish...Go for it!!!! I never had sweetbreads before and I'm not sure I really want to know what it is..but I thought they were pretty good.

    4) Bring your own wines!!! They don't sell wines, but they allow you to bring your own,so next time I'm here..I'll be bringing bottles...heck, if you see me in the restaurant, I might be selling one of my wines for a hefty profit..gotta find a way to pay for the meal somehow!!!

So overall...the place has a nice ambience, excellent for big crowds..service was pretty good, they did spill some meat juice on my lap at the end of my meal, but I was so high on meat that I didn't really care by then...and the foods were more than edible...good in my opinion, not as much according to my wife and friends.. but I was more than happy to finish their foods, even after I got done with my Lomo Relleno, which was meant for 2 people...what can i say? I have a huge appetite for life!!!!

I'm rather critical of my dining experiences, I enjoy being this way, and I'm thrilled when a business meets my expectations.  If you're like me, then Tangle Sur is not the place for you.

Overall, the entire experience is of a lower quality; especially for the price-point.  The music was an overly loud loop of bass-heavy pseudo-latino dance music befitting of the byob vodka and red bulls at the table next to us, but clashing with the candlelight.  The service was mediocre.  I had to ask for another plate and 2 more sets of silverware for our party of 5.  The waiter was sufficient, but disinterested.

The food was okay.  The salads are horendous.  They look like a plate of condiments for a cheeseburger: bagged iceberg, two circular tomato slices, and a handful of onion rings, undressed.  The lengua lacked flavor, the empanadas were rather plain, and our steaks were unimpressive in flavor, cut, and internal temperature.  A medium rare fillet mignon had to be sent back, as it was cold in the center; but all of the entrees were decidedly underdone.

All things considered, I definitely won't return.

Came here 2 times and the service has always been good. First time we came with a huge party and they were able to seat us right away with a reservation. Not bad from a place that is always packed.

Empanadas - they have a few choices, but so far I have tried most of them. My favorite is the chicken and the ham and cheese, but you cant go wrong with any of them. They are really good and I love coming here for them. Absolutely the best!

Jamon Crudo Con Melon - thin slice of ham served with a cantaloupe. This was good, but I could pass on this next time.

Berenjena - oven baked eggplant with spinach mixed with a delicious cream sauce. This is my second favorite thing here.

El Filet - fillet mignon topped with red onions. This was pretty good and the fillet was juicy and perfect.

Lomo Relleno - fillet mignon that had a lot of fat and tendon to it. Definitely not what I was expecting from a fillet. This was a huge serving that could easily serve 2 people. I was disappointed in the quality of this steak and I wouldn't get this again.

Overall, this place gets packed and they only take reservations for bigger parties, but they were nice enough to squeeze me a reservation for 2 on a Monday. Another reason I will come back is because it is byob. This place is good for groups and it does get loud inside.

Came here for our Christmas party this year..There was over 25 of us and everything ran so smooth! Great ambiance, attentive servers, and delicious food. Everyone was raving about what they had. For a place known for their red meat, their salmon was a huge hit. I heard the terms, "to die for", "incredible", and a few others. Super huge portions, almost everyone had to wrap up their entrees.

Overall, it was a really amazing experience and I'd like to thank them for being so accommodating for such a large group. I think everyone who went will be going back.  Highly recommended!

I was a little disappointed with Tango Sur.

I had the filet mignon. It wasn't as good as i thought it would be. It wasn't as tender as it should be. On the other hand, the flap meat for two people was very good. I didn't expect the flap meat to be even more tender than my filet mignon. I was disappointed.

Portions were HUGE. By the time i finished my steak, i was so full that i couldn't eat my spinach mash potato. The spinach mash potato was so good thou~

Empanadas were yummy too~ Baked eggplant was a bit too cheesy. It was overall a nice experience.

5 stars knowing that you're going to wait.  Do what everyone else does, get a Mickey's 40oz to chill on the corner and shoot a little dice up against the wall while you wait. Or you can just go down the street to Cullens to have a few drinks to kill the time with your company.

This is one of those places I always want to go on my birthday. Where else on earth are you going to get that much meat, at that price, can bring your own wine, and they have delicious empenadas? Get out of here. This is a GREAT place to go, but you should know, it will be your night. Don't make any other plans except for eating, drinking, and taking home leftovers of meat!

What do I order - At least 1 of every empenada depending on the size of the group. Try them all! Then it's automatic double filet every time! Once they looked it up with a Flan for desert, I don't like FLan, but this was awesome! EAT HERE EXCEPT FOR THE NIGHTS WHEN I'M GOING.

I'm really just not a fan of this place.  It seems to me that everyone in Chicago who is fairly new to the city or is younger has heard of this place and lists it as one of their favorite restaurants in the city.  I disagree, and here's why.

Wait: This place is always super crowded and I think they only take reservations for large groups.  Even when my group has had a reservation, we still wait, and not just for a short time.  I'm talking 30 minutes to an hour, with reservation.  Further, the doorman was not friendly or helpful regarding wait time and whether any of my party had arrived and was in the waiting room.  He also said the wait room was crowded and full, so I had to wait outside, despite that the rest of my party was inside waiting.

Atmosphere: Even when I have been seated, the place is dark and crowded.  We had a reservation for 14.  But they gave us a table for 10, which makes for an unpleasant dinner.  My hips were in one spot, but my shoulders were twisted to be able to fit everyone.  Every table is crowded together, and the room is far too dark.

Service: I'm underwhelmed.  They aren't friendly or helpful.  And the service here is slooooow.  Expect to wait longer after ordering.

Food: If I want my breath to taste like garlic for the next five days, then yeah.  The food is generally good, but it is also not overpriced.  The food is not really my issue with this place.  It's fine, I think people find the concept of a steak for $20 or less to be awesome, but you're not getting a Joe's quality steak.

I think people like this because you can get a tasty steak for a very low price.  You pay for this however in the form of poor service, crowded room, and wait time.  I'd honestly rather pay three times the price, get a top quality steak, be seated at the time of my reservation, and have friendly service.  Not to mention actually having my own space and the ability to move my arms to eat!

This place has been reviewed a million times.  So I don't have much to add but I'll try.

The place is crazy busy on weekends.  They don't take reservations and after 630pm or so, expect a 1 to 2 hour wait.  I went recently on a Monday and there was no wait.

There are two excellent cuts of steaks, I'd avoid the rest.  The two best are the filet and skirts.  AVOID THE RIBEYES.

The salads are meh, so skip them unless you love iceberg.

The starters are very good.  Recently I had the prociutto with melon which was fresh and excellent.  The grilled provolone and the sliced eggplant are also excellent.  The one item I find to be very average are the empanadas.

Service is always good and the people are nice.  Gotta love the byo.  And don't forget to tip well, as it is byob (so the bill is way lighter than a typical restaurant) and these guys work hard!
