Tot dogs is quite literally a hole in the wall. You could walk by and not even notice it was there. But if you are so observant as to stop in, you can make your order at the counter and enjoy your lunch on the go, or over in the nearby Garfield park. I'm grappling with my feelings about this joint because I found it to be enticing but overpriced. I like that they offer very unique hot dogs, such as pheasant, and I really enjoyed the chili cheese sauce, but I needed more food to call it a lunch. If I had enough food in my tummy for the same cost, Tot Dogs would be five stars, but I guess that's the price of niche.
Review Source:I was a cranky canary when I walked into Tot Dogs today.
I took my lunch break around 12:30, so I was starving at this point. I walked in and while there was only one person working there, he was extremely courteous.
This isn't going to be the fastest service you've ever seen, but as a member of an instant gratification generation in a panic of hunger, I was in no mood to wait.
I kept myself busy by tweeting about my experience, which only made things worse. I was determined not to like this place.
But then I took a bite of my reuben hotdog. I can't even describe it. It was heavenly.
The hotdogs, bratts and metts served at this place are well prepared, and taste delicious. It was overall a great experience. I wouldn't go here if you're in a rush, because honestly I don't know why there was only one guy working during lunch rush (a bit mystifying).
Overall I was impressed with the service. There isn't any sitting room, so take a stroll and eat outside the library (just a block north), or Fountain Square (just a block south). Â
If you have sticker shock at the price of their hotdogs, just remember that you're supporting a local business. And it was your choice to eat hot dogs in the first place. Just think: Okay, the price of this hotdog is doing to my wallet what this hotdog is doing to my digestive track.
Okay, the price isn't exorbitant. About $5 for a specialty hotdog. They're delicious.
Happy eating!
I had the chicken sausage and baked beans. Both were alright, but not amazing. The place is basically a hot dog cart, but indoors and over-priced.
The guy who took my order seemed lost and confused, and was eating his own lunch when we walked in around noon. It also took way longer than expected to get one hot dog and some beans.
I doubt I'll bother going again, especially since a normal hot dog cart has popped up across the street.
