I've eaten here before, but today I went in for a sandwich and witnessed some hygiene issues. The cashier wore gloves while using the register, handled cash, then went right to making my sandwich without a glove change or hand washing. I asked for a refund and a senior worker also used the register with a gloved hand and went right back to making sandwiches. It was very disgusting and disappointing. Clearly these practices are the norm, rather than an exception.
Review Source:They have a variety of tasty sandwiches to choice from, or you can make your own. Â They don't skimp on making your own either like some places, and offer pretty much everything they have for you to customize your own sandwich. Â
It seems a little pricey, and it can get really crowded, but overall it's a very solid place to stop in and pick up some lunch.
Yummy! I've been meaning to try Backcountry Provisions for awhile now, and I finally ventured in for a sandwich this afternoon. I ordered the Godfather (who doesn't love a good Italian?!) on whole wheat bread and it was delicious! The bread was perhaps the freshest I have ever tasted at a downtown sandwich shop, and the rest of the ingredients were fresh as can be. The sandwich was well crafted and the service was top notch! Plus, the music was old school cool - I rocked out to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air AND Just the Two of Us while I chowed down on my sandwich. The only real downside is price - almost $12 for a sandwich and a soda. You definitely get what you pay for at BCP (quality wise) but it's a little expensive for everyday eatin'!
Review Source:So, as a new yelper, who only created an account to vent a complaint (but also a regular user of yelp for reviews), I keep reminding myself to give the guys I like credit too, and I have been meaning to review Backcountry FOREVER! There certainly isn't any competition in that area for sandwiches (downtown, yes..that neighborhood, no).
For one, they have such a great selection of breads, meats, cheese...whatever topping. As a condiment lover it doesn't get much better for choices in the sandwich market. I usually get one of the specialty sandwiches, they tend to be better than when I build one myself. The chicken salad is especially delicious.
They also have a selection of micro-brews (canned I think?), not sure of the price range because I only go for lunch during the work week - but I imagine they're reasonable by comparison.
The service is always great. Very friendly and extremely helpful. It's also a great option for take-out.
I'll admit that prices are a little steep for sandwiches, but they're an upscale deli in LoDo. Not to be compared with Quizno's or Smiling Moose, it's just not fair. Regardless, they are quality sandwiches. Trust the sandwich masters there to get you something you'll come back for, and if in doubt the breakfast options can't be messed up.
They usually have soup too! But it's a daily trade off, so call ahead if you want to know what they've got.
I work above BCP, and make my lunch rounds there at least once a week. The Ridgeline is by far my favorite... only on sourdough. Every once in a while I will get it toasted (as you can with any of their sandwiches). I have mixed it up a few times, but continue to return to my fave. Definitely give their breakfast sandwiches a try... they are super tasty, and pretty big. The best time to go here? Late afternoon on a Saturday. Pretty quiet, you can have a beer (or two), and sit back in one of the booths to watch some college football on their TV. ALL while noshing on a delicious sandwich.
Review Source:Being a pescatarian, I don't have a whole lot of options at Backcountry (their tuna sammich is just so-so and their veggie options don't sound too appealing), but I appreciate the place for what it is. They have a wide and unique variety of meats, cheeses and veggies, so there's a lot of room for creativity when it comes to their "Build Your Own" option. The employees here are very friendly and it's a nice place to sit and eat lunch. Prices are a tad high, but I'd guess they attribute that to their quality ingredients.
Review Source:Not sure about all the raves on this place. Â Met a friend who works on the block so it is my first time hearing about it and visiting. Â I liked the vibe of the place and they had a pretty decent selection of sandwiches.
I ordered The Grand--it was pretty good---a little skimpy on the meat for $9.50 or there abouts. Â The bread was just OK (French baguette). Â I think the quality of the meat may be the thing here, but I found it to be very expensive. Â For two sandwiches, free water, no chips and a pickle (must be charge for that, but I was not real sure), the total came to over $21.00. Â
I would not rush back here, but obviously it is good for the work crowd that works on Wazee.
I'm a big fan of any place that lets me design my own sandwich, and has lots of choices to do so, and Backcountry has the stuff to make my ideal sandwich. Â If you're ever going to name a sandwich after me, I want a French roll, with rare roast beef, roasted red peppers, brie and cheddar cheeses. I can get my sandwich at Backcountry.
The staff is friendly. Â The space is open, accommodating and practical. Â They do bicycle delivery and have catering options.
My only complaint about the place is that the outside stinks from the pot shop next door. Other than that, it's just great.
What I had? Â Ridgeline (Roasted turkey, sharp cheddar cheese, honey cured bacon, avocado, tomato, romaine and garlic mayo)
Food review: Â So, I had received a lot of mixed reviews about this place so just wasn't sure what to expect. Â First of all, there wasn't really anything on the menu that jumped out at me so had to ask the man takin' orders what was good. Â Decided to go with the ridgeline which is supposedly the most popular option there. Â Bread choices.. oooh.. french baguette looks good. Â How about french forget-about-it? Â In consensus with the negative reviews I had received before going to backcountry, the bread is just sad. Â I expected some crisp and somewhat damaging to the roof of my mouth :-) with some good flavor. Â Instead I got some soft blah. Â
OK ok.. enough with the bread rant... really I'm not terribly critical of bread with sandwiches but it was just disappointing that that bread got the label of french baguette. Â Inside of the bread, however, everything was generally tasty. Â
Service? Â Friendly
Other thoughts:  OK, yeah it has a lot of local beers but this is a lunch place, yeah?  Unless you can get away with that for lunch time, it doesn't do me any good.  :-s  I had some coworkers that gave feedback about the bread being sad back when it about opened.  It appears they did not find the feedback valuable which is unfortunate.
This place was awesome and very unique! Â I ordered a create your own sandwich on the french baguette, with roast beef, cheddar cheese, and horseradish mayo. Â It was fantastic!
The bread was fresh, flavorful, with a chew, and everything I would expect from a french baguette. Â The meat was lean, not salty, and plentiful. Â The cheese was white cheddar (no fake yellow coloring), and was like a farmhouse cheddar with lots of flavor. Â The horseradish mayo had just the right amount of kick, and they didn't slather it on too thick.
The atmosphere was pretty cool. Â Each table had a national park map on it, and then it was sealed. Â It was very outdoorsy with no frills. Â They are in the business of great sandwiches, and that is all. Â And they do it wonderfully.
The staff was fun and friendly. Â When they found out this was my first trip, they offered me a free brownie or a free cookie. Â I chose the brownie, which was wrapped in saran warp and in a huge cookie jar. Â When I reached in to claim my freebie, the saran wrap was stuck to the glass, and as I tried to grasp it more firmly, my fingers sunk into the brownie. Â I knew I had chosen well! Â After devouring my sandwich, I unwrapped my moist brownie was was greeted with rich, chocolatey goodness. Â These were no precooked and shipped brownies... they seemed homemade and fresh!
Next time I'm in Denver, I'll definitely be getting some Backcountry Provisions!
Quick and friendly service, delicious food and great atmosphere!
On my visit I coveted the outside seating - wishing I could pull up a chair on this sunny and warm day. Â So, inside I sat where I was delighted with the simple, but tasteful decor. Â
Walk up to the register and order a sandwich from the menu or build your own. Â The staff welcomed me and were genuinely friendly. Â In just a few moments my sandwich was ready...I was in for a real treat.
I had the Expedition - roast beef on wheat with swiss cheese, tomato, avocado, lettuce and chipotle mayo. Â WOW - supper fresh ingredients and taste. Â
The clientle appeared to be mostly business people enjoying casual lunch. Â The cool music track played at just the right volume so shouting wasn't necessary.
I will come back for lunch the next time I'm in Denver.  I think I'll try the Grand - check out the menu at <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbackcountryprovisions.com%2Fmenu.php&s=3bfa00d66bc3922fc8f1a709335f66d31cc1b052c7431a90b2601fed24f415dc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://backcountryprovis…</a>
Just when you think a sandwich joint cannot possibly push the envelope on culinary creativity, BAM!  Backcountry Provisions steps up to the plate and connects for a home run.  Fresh takes on old favorites like turkey and Swiss or roast beef and cheddar make Backcountry Provisions a winner.  I picked a half sandwich and soup combination.  The Ridgeline sandwich is turkey-bacon-avocado with cheddar and a heavenly garlic mayo on French baguette.  I typically pass on mayo, but in this case it was worth it.  There were four soups available so I tried the carrot ginger.  It was more of a chunky bisque not a purée like I was expecting, but it was still good.  The sandwich was the star of the show for me.  All fresh, made with care and an interesting taste combination not too far from that which is familiar but new enough to be engaging.  The sandwich comes with a pickle spear and the soup, oyster crackers.  The French baguette was soft in just the right way for a sandwich.  I like a hard baguette on its own, say with just butter, but ripping my mouth up on a sandwich is annoying so this bread choice works well here.  Other notables on the menu would be a kid's menu, a few salads and a light selection of breakfast bagel sandwiches.  They offer gluten free bread and the build your own menu is broken down by bases, like turkey and chicken, beef, veggie, ham, or fish (yes they have a tuna sandwich but more interestingly they have a salmon and Havarti sandwich). Â
Booze is also a part of the equation at Backcountry Provisions, not exactly a wild west saloon but a decent offering and a happy hour to boot, pilgrim. Â Beers on tap from Oskar Blues Brewing and a careful selection of cans and bottles like a PBR 24oz or Sunshine Wheat from New Belgium are complemented by harder stuff like Tito's hand-made vodka, and a small selection of wines. Â The usual fountain drinks, iced tea or San Pellegrino sparkling fruit beverages are also available.
The interior design is a mountain town/general store theme. Â Aged wood paneling on everything they could fit. Â Maps laminated to the table tops show Colorado wilderness. Â A snow board is hung to the main counter by bungee cords. Â It's feels like any number of mountain towns in Colorado; rustic, homey, comfortable. Â Â Â Â Â
Fresh, good food in a laid back environment summarizes my experience at Backcountry Provisions.
I fully believe that if I go into an establishment and have an excellent experience, I should give that establishment a five star review.
But then what on earth do I do when I go back an have an even better experience? Â How do I give them a sixth star?
My lastest visit to started when the guy working the register overheard me telling my Lady that I was gonna get the same sandwich as the last time. Â It was just so good, you know? Â When I tried to order it he said, "If you've already had that, you should really get something else. Â If you liked the Dolomite, try the Into the Wild. Â It's not on the menu, but it has [list of amazing sounding ingredients]. Â Give it a whirl. Â It's awesome!"
How cool is that? Â He cares enough about me and my experience and has enough belief in the quality of food, and has enough knowledge not only to tell me I should branch out, but also to recommend I eat a different sandwich which ended up rocking my fricking world!!
And then he made a fantastic recommendation to my Lady (who can be quite indecisive) who was there for the first time. Â He asked her which type of meats, and toppings, and flavors she liked, and ended up recommending a sandwich that had her closing her eyes and savoring the flavor. Then he gave her a free brownie for being a first timer!
I don't know if you can get this type of customer service during the lunch rush, but the fact that you can get it any time is fantastic.
This would be one of my favorite places even if sandwiches weren't my favorite food. Â As it is, I think this is my favorite eating establishment in Denver.
Wow, where to begin? My office is located very close to Backcountry Provisions and I place fairly large delivery orders there weekly, if not more. The fax-in ordering is great - fast and simple! They call back almost immediately to confirm and double check your order and they are super friendly! Their delivery is ALWAYS on time and again, the service is super friendly.
The food? Fresh and delicious every single time. I usually order a variety of box lunches and I've noticed that the sandwiches keep pretty fresh in the fridge for a couple of days when I want to save some for later. Their selection of sandwiches and ingredients is incredible! The turkey Ridgeline is my go-to sandwich, but I tried the roast beef Expedition for the first time today and I'm in love.
If you haven't tried this place, you are missing out. Thank you, Backcountry Provisions. You guys rock!
Oh Backcountry, I love you more and more each time!
I recently stopped in for lunch with the hubs and got the turkey trailhead (turkey, honey dijon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, sans the red onion) sandwich and had entree envy of the hubs who ordered the yard bird (turkey, chipotle mayo, pepperoncini, lettuce, and cheese, served hot) Â - which is a sandwich that is usually offered as a special but you can order as a type of "secret" order. Both sandwiches were good but I'm opting to get my own yard bird next time.
I noticed that they now offer Left Hand Milk Stout on tap - mmm...that is really a great beer to go with these great sandwiches!
My only guff is that the women's bathroom seems kind of out of the way and not as "oh hey - here is our bathroom" as the men's. I always feel like I am trespassing on the salon's (which is next door) property when I go to wash my hands before my lunch. I just wish it was a little bit more welcoming. Just sayin'.
Too much bread not enough meat. Yes the ingredients are very fresh, including the avocado, I would like to have had more generous portions of these fresh ingredients everyone is raving about! Yes the bread is also fresh, and by the end of lunch I could have made another sandwich with all the bread I tore away in search of the roast beef!
If you like bland sandwiches made with bread you can find in your fridge, then this is your spot.
The service here makes this my go-to sandwich place in town. Â They are always super friendly and Dave (the owner) knows me now because of my frequent visits for their yummy coffee. Â It's brewed just for them by Novo. Â It's nutty, smooth and their store is right along my route for walking to work. Â Dangerous! Â
Their sandwiches are large and full of tasty ingredients. Â All are really fresh--I can't stand old lettuce or unripe tomatoes on a sandwich. Â I've had some of their daily specials and they have all been really good. Â My most recent lunch visit found me ordering The Summit, a staple on their everyday menu. Â Ham, brie, bacon, cranberry chutney and all the normal fixins made for a delightful lunch with some fellow yelpers. Â Oh, and their breakfast sandwiches? Pretty awesome as well.
Backcountry,
You continue to have my heart, and there are several reasons why. Here goes:
1. Your amazing sammich's are to die for. I was tempted by your daily special today [french dip!] and went with my usual, but i absolutely love your food :) everything is homemade, fresh daily and good to the last bite!
2. You are located right next to my office, which makes for a nice long lunch after just a hop, skip and jump to your store. your interior and patio are adorable and very welcoming :)
3. Your staff is outstanding. I was greeted by smiles and my face & name were recognized as soon as i was at the counter. A "Hi Katie :)" was said, and i hadn't even told him my name...must have a memorable face! ha :) everyone is super friendly, nice and are hard workers :)
4. Beer and liquor is not only sold here all day long, but for dirt cheap. a sammich and a PBR for $6. count me in.
5. I just love you :)
Thanks again for making the first installment of Downtown Yelpers lunch hour awesome...as always :)
Oh Yea, loved Backcountry! Such a great selection of sandos. Â I, of course, go for those Italian meats aka European Specialties. Â I ordered the Dolomite, which consisted of prosciutto, salami, provolone, roasted red peppers, red onions and was dressed with house vinaigrette. Â Momma Mia! Magnifico! I devoured it. Â The bread was nice and fresh. The portion of meat to bread to toppings was perfect. Â I hate sandwiches that have way to much of one, and not enough of the other. Â I sampled my mother's Thanksgiving dinner sando, I think it was called the Pilgrim. Â When she bit into it, Â she literally said out loud "It tastes like Thanksgiving!" Â She requested hers toasted on Texas toast and it really took the sando to a higher level. Â I personally prefer my sandwiches not toasted, but that was fantastically toasted.
My father had a chicken Cesar and the hubs had...um...not sure, but I do know he also devoured his. Â We each had a beer and enjoyed the front patio. Â The price is a bit steep, but I don't mind spending at all when I know I'm getting quality. Â And they have Avery White Rascal on tap...can't be beat!
The last time I came here I gave this place a three star. Since then, I have been here a number of times for lunch and had a great experience each time.
Backcountry Provisions offers great daily lunch specials. Today, I tried the tuna sandwich special on sourdough bread. This sandwich was absolutely delicious and the portion was large as well. In the past, I tried a roast beef special with blue cheese. That was another standout.
If I don't order the specials, I usually swing for the build your own sandwich.
The prices may be a bit high for a deli, but the meat quality and ingredient quality is top-notch.
There are so many options downtown now, it is great. When I used to work here it was hard to get a good sandwich. But now holy buckets, just within a 5 block radius of this place there are so many places to go! The abundance of options, combined with the fact that I was just in Northern California for a few months, leads me to give Backcountry Provisions only three stars, whereas a few years ago it probably would have gotten four.
I do think that getting the sandwich toasted would be very helpful, and I will try that next time. But I mean they are putting meat and cheese and stuff on bread an the whole wheat bread is nothing to write home about, for almost $10? Come on man, that is just a bit much. However, all the ingredients are quite fresh and I do enjoy a few of the combinations they have created. I had a summit I believe which is ham, brie, cranberry chutney, bacon, and garlic mayo. I modified it a bit (removed the bacon and mayo, I am watching my girlish figure), but it was darned okay. Good-sized also, I am a big eater but I was full when I finished it. They do give you a ton of meat.
The service is quite friendly and the people who work there all seem to enjoy it. I like the atmosphere and the topological maps around also. I would go back but I won't be a regular.
This was a venue for a fabulous Yelp Elite Event a while ago, where I had a taste of their mouthwatering offerings. They were so good that I had to come back for lunch the next day with Chris in tow.
A fantastic little place bang in the centre of LoDo, Backcountry Provisions is perfect for a quick lunch - make sure to walk back to work - these noshings are quite large.
These are some good sandwiches - no skimping on the stuffing/fillings here. The take a lot of care making sure the fillings are piled high and in a sensible manner - especially noteworthy since I hate stuff falling out as I eat.
The menu is extensive, and there is a sandwich out there for everyone.
If sandwiches make your world rock, try this little place - you won't be disappointed. They also cater.
A cute patio completes the experience.
Whoa. Â These sandwiches are good. Â Really good. Â The roast beef with bleu cheese is out of control. Â Like explode my mouth with magic out of control. Â It's called the Fourteener. Â I could eat this thing nearly everyday. Â I love sandwiches with flair and personality and this place delivers on both. Â
Also, they carry a rad selection of Oskar Blues beer and the staff is totally the deal. Â I'm a huge fan now. Â Go there and get the Fourteener toasted. Â You'll thank me. Â I guarantee it (just like the Men's Warehouse guy).
I have been to Backcountry Provisions several times now, but it was this last time that I went that made me say "Yay!", and "Yum!", and "This is up there with the best sandwiches I've ever had." Â The secret? Â Get that fucker TOASTED! Â
The first time I went I had the Ridgeline. Â Good sandwich. Â Turkey, bacon, sharp cheddar, garlic mayo, slices of avocado, romaine, and tomato. Â I always get it on baguette. Â It was good and delicious. Â This last time I went I had the same sandwich, only toasted. Â It was 10 times better. Â I could taste the garlic mayo. Â The slices of avocado were creamier and shined through with flavor. Â The bacon was bacon-ier. Â It was insane!
I've also had the Summit - ham, brie, bacon, cranberry chutney, romaine, and tomato. Â When I had that, the guy recommended it toasted, but I got it without. Â Again, good sandwich. Â Delicious even. Â Next time? Â I'm getting that fucker TOASTED!
I'll be back for sure BP. Â I'll be the one asking you to toast that fucker!
Holy delicious sandwich Batman! Backcountry Provisions is awesome for several reasons, but right out of the gate I noticed that these folks know how to properly make a sandwich. And that's all in the layering. You know how sometimes you get a sandwich and the slippery stuff like tomatoes or avocados start falling out the sides? That' because they are touching each other! But, at BCP they know to put the slippery stuff on other sandwich stuffings that will keep in all in between the bread. This is fantastic because not only does your sandwich stay whole, but with each bite you get all the flavors that you wanted when you ordered said sandwich. And that my friends causes an explosion of flavors in your mouth where you can taste each distinctive ingredient before they all meld together to create a new super flavor. You know a flavor that gets a cape and saves the day and all that jazz. :)
The sandwich I tried was the Expedition and it was so good I'm itching to go back and try more and more of what they offer. My sandwich was made of top round roast beef, cheddar cheese, avocado, tomato, romaine lettuce, and chipotle mayo. While I had a meaty option BCP does have a lot of other options include fish, veggie, and even European style sandwiches (one is made with German liverwurst.) And if you don't like any of their pre-designed selects you can build your own. The little Lego user in me loves the concept of building your own anything so I will have to try this sooner or later...
They also do breakfast and beyond sandwiches you can order salads or homemade soups. And they do serve beer and wine, even featuring a happy hour between 4 and 6 pm daily (even on the weekends I believe) with tons of local Colorado beers. What's not to love about that?
