Every single time I go to Houston, bad stuff happens. I really have gotten to hate the town. Don't like the rental car setup, the humidity, the tollway, the confusing exits and frontage roads, the way downtown is arranged. So naturally this latest trip was a debacle. Took off late, then sat on runway a while after landing, then an accident at my highway exit had the cops routing me WAY around my hotel. Got in late, and of course everything is closed, so no dinner.
I walked across the street and found the Derrick Lounge, and found out that the kitchen had closed thirty minutes earlier. I was grumbling like a baby, and the manager, Ryan, said he would fix me up. He brought out some salad, and talked the cook into hanging out and doing me up a steak and garlic mashed potatoes. Instead of telling me to shut up and leave, he took care of me. So did the bartender, a lovely young woman with a tattoo on her wrist and no, didn't catch her name.
He even took the time to ask me about business and my trip in general and was a lot cooler than I would have been to somebody as bitchy as me. The food was astounding, and I made sure to tip generously. I highly recommend this friendly place with great steaks and excellent beer selection. Â I would also add, good music piped in and great atmosphere too.
So three cheers for Ryan and I've found my one and only place next time I'm doing biz in the energy corridor.
I've been to the Derrick countless times over the years. Â It used to be our place to go after work with coworkers for happy hour. Â
It has a very nice interior even though its just kind of snookered into the corner of a strip center. Â They have a big projection screen for sports, two pool tables, a couple dart boards, and a Golden Tee (I think). Â The happy hour prices aren't horrible, its pretty standard for drink prices within Houston. Â They have a limited appetizer menu to order from. Â The Southwest Egg Rolls are really damn good. Â Also depending on what night it is, they bring in free food of some sort and you can't beat that. Â They have a top notch jukebox with a lot of classic rock and stuff that everybody likes to listen to.
The downside to this place is the waitresses. Â They mean well and are nice, but they're very slow. Â The waitress we had the other night only had four tables, but our drink orders were taking up to 10 minutes. Â So you might just get your drinks at the bar. Â Also depending on what you're looking for in a bar, the place is pretty dead after happy hour ends and the stragglers leave. Â I personally like it when its slow, but some people might not.
My favorite little tip for this place is to not even monkey with the parking out front. Â Just pull around back of the strip center, and park back there because there's plenty of spots. Â Then just go through the back door. Â Its the only one with an ash tray sitting next to it.
I would have liked to given this place 3 and a half stars, but I can't. Â Its a good place, but its nothing to cream your pants over.
Derrick Tavern is the BAR in the Energy Corridor Area! In my opinion, it would hv been cooler if they brewed their own beer. But still I like this place. They have all sorts of drinks ... not sure abt the frozen ones.. need to check with them the next time. They have the usual dart lanes .. pool tables and free food. Although I cannot eat what they usually have (no vegetarian food), but still ain't that awesome.
The place might not be so crowded on Sundays. The crowd might be a bit elderly. They might play good ol country songs (jukebox) now n then ... wateva ... for me ... this place rocks... cool waitresses ... proximity to home... wat more do u want from a bar wen u are already drunk :P!
Pretty cool place if you are in the energy corridor out in Katy. A bunch of energy people on Thursday nights for happy hour. Good for networking? Good drink specials? Yea yea yea, but you get free pizza and sushi, its a great combination, trust me, Im a professional. Done.
and if you went to Stratford High school like Lauren and I did... its definitely a highschool reunion.

I've been here a few times for happy hour and once later in the evening. Â The place is really busy during happy hour, but it was dead later on. Â Lesson learned. Â The atmosphere is quite nice. Â It's laid back, but it's very pretty and even has a pool table in the back. Â I like how they have candles on the tables too. Â Pretty nice for a place with 'tavern' in the name. Â Service can be a bit sketchy. Â On my last visit I sat at the mostly empty bar for quite a while before the bartender decided to ask me what I'd like. Â Shame on him. Â Overall, the happy hour specials will keep me coming back. Â Nothing like cheap drinks and free food to please this girl. Â Am I classy or what?
