I like locally owned coffee shops. And Henry's was ok. But there was nothing to make it be a place I would want to go back to.
The decor was a bit to plain.
The breakfast menu was too limited. I felt like I didn't have many options if I wanted something hot. I ended up with a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich on toast. It was big...maybe too much egg actually. But not flavorful. It either needs better bread or cheese...or maybe more salt & pepper in the eggs. Something. Just bland.
I do like that it comes with either yogurt or a banana. I took the banana since it was something I could take with me and the sandwich was too big for me to need anything else.
Coffee was fine. Again, nothing spectacular.
The best thing about the coffee shop is the patio (but it was winter so we didn't sit out there) and the convenience next door to where we were staying (Nestle Inn).
Would I go back?
If I was staying at the Nestle again...yes. But I might save my breakfast voucher ($10 value) for lunch and walk somewhere else for breakfast. Their lunch choices looked much better.
I love a neighborhood coffee shop, and Henry's is pretty much the one for Cottage Home. A literally 2 minute drive or a nice 10-15 minute stroll and your at this friendly establishment.
The staff is beyond friendly, as well, and I love that one of them was set up with her kids selling Girl Scout Cookies this past Saturday. So. Adorable. Â
Beyond that, the coffee and coffee drinks are great. The food is delicious and they have a huge menu. No reason for anyone to say there isn't something for the to eat.
Although they don't carry gluten-free menu items, my kid was VERY happy with bacon and quiche, haha :).
We love this as a Saturday-read-the-paper-hangout-with-the -fam spot. And you will too.
Despite living like a 7 minute bike ride from this place, I had never stopped in until today. I ordered a medium latte and bottled water and my husband asked for a large cap. The bill came to $8.99, so I thought the bottled water was a bit $$ but I'm the dope for not noticing that they had free water over by the sweeteners, etc.
The coffee was hot and good. I always look for sugar-free flavors but, for some reason, I didn't at Henry's. I haven't eaten but I have heard that the food is good. We sat outside -- a freaky January day when it was 60+ degrees! -- and one of the employees came out to check on us and other patrons.
Amazingly, there don't seem to be any parking meters on East. Given the proximity to Mass, I was shocked. I look forward to going back and trying a salad or panini. Henry's seems like a good place to cycle to when I'm working from home and need a break from these 4 walls ...
We had Henry's on a fantastic Saturday for brunch! If it was a tad warmer we would've sat outside. What a great location!
I ordered the breakfast burrito which came with a side of delicious yogurt! The burrito was great and I didn't feel like I had just eaten something terrible for me.
I agree with the review about the tables and chairs messing with the warm, welcoming atmosphere, but it didn't bother me too much.
The staff was friendly and sort of helpful. I'm not a coffee drinker so I stuck with water but only had about a half of a glass because the water was practically empty the entire time we were there. Other than that, it made for a great start to our Saturday!
I've experienced better, and I've experienced worse. I'm afraid to say it, but the atmosphere at Henry's has changed over the last couple of years. Gone is the local coffee shop vibe where you could hang out with a book or surf the net and pass the day away. Now it's too commercial.. the food quality isn't quite the same, and they close at 7..
Review Source:Definitely a great place to meet with friends and enjoy a bite or a drink on a nice afternoon. I came in with a friend to do some work ...we were there for 3 hours and no one minded. We ate lunch, did some work, grabbed drinks to go at the end and really had a nice time. It's in a such a great spot that it's easy to get to whether you bike, walk, or drive. For those of you who don't know, it's right off the Cultural Trail on East Street which makes it super easy if you're biking or walking. It has great outdoor seating, which we didn't enjoy because it was a little windy and cool.
I went with a smoked turkey sandwich that was good, nothing to brag about but the avocado sauce was super delicious and made it something different than the plain ole turkey sandwich. At the end I ordered a chai latte to go which was warm and hit the spot in the belly!! I recommend this place to those who enjoy a nice spot to eat with lots of shopping close by or those who want to enjoy that coffeehouse feeling without being overwhelmed. It's a definite keeper.
Finally made it here. Never gonna leave.
This is a great spot for coffee, breakfast, brunch, lunch, you name it.
Their outdoor patio is the selling point. On our visit the main room was fairly full and extremely loud. But with the abundance of tables outside, we had no problem finding a spot.
Grab a cup of joe and a breakfast burrito and you are all set. Their main-menu burrito was excellent, and huge! and came with yogurt, granola and fresh strawberries. Have heard great things about their bagel sandwiches and their biscuits and gravy (weekend brunch only).
Cannot wait to make this a regular spot for coffee and brunch.
3.5 stars really.. decent coffee & food men.. also a good spot for Sunday brunch.
The tables and chairs need to be changed, they really kill the atmosphere. (I know I'm being picky)
The staff is friendly, but the service can be a bit slow.. but nothing to get in a huff about.
The outdoor seating & bicycle rack is a plus!
Yes, it is definitely "Woohoo!" and with a side of "Woot!". Â We try to come by at least once every week for brunch, which are always creative and a balanced blend of flavors. Also blended and balanced is the menu: a variety of breakfast items and usual/unusual paninis during the week joined by a good spread of that brunchy stuff I mentioned on the weekends. Actually, the term "comfort food" comes to mind, although my take on comfort is definitely bistro fare.
Include in that category the best biscotti in the universe, or at least in this general vicinity. How many times have you had one of these just crunchy enough to soak up coffee and maintain its biscotti-ish consistency but still soft enough to nom on? Plus the flavors...ever have a Nutella biscotti? No? Drop by, you'll be pleasantly overwhelmed.
WiFi and free regular and decaf refills. A fully packed buzz...fer shure!
Chef Dan. I really like this guy. He is both inventive and daring; tell him your opinions on his work. If enough of us like his often one-off creations, maybe he'll make them all the time?
Lastly, the ambiance: Â laid back downtown, sidewalk tables, on trend (and affordable) art on the walls. True, sometimes it's too crowded to get a table and they may run out of biscotti, but that's the price you pay.
P.S. Fellow gray-hairs: you won't feel overcome by the young and hip. After all, we are the older and hip!
Wonder where your CM is? Not to worry - stroll on into Henry's in the morning hours and you'll probably catch her nose deep in a Chai with spectacular company. My loyalty to Henry's received a cherry on the top this past week when the owner strolled over to my table and dropped off an oh-so-sweet and delicious congratulatory Dan's lemon bar. It's the local/small town feel and familiar places that holds Henry's in a special place in my heart.
Review Source:Stopped in on a Wednesday morning. There was a good flow of customers coming in and out of the place. I had a latte. It was tasty. I had a breakfast sandwich and it was only so-so.
The outside of the building is really nice, the inside is more standard fare. It turned out to be a good choice, but I suspect that there might be better options out there.
I can't rave about this place enough. Anytime I have someone ask me a good coffee place near mass I ALWAYS send them to Henry's of East Street.
It is local owned, awesome! Being pregnant I have to limit my coffee intake so I switch to hot chocolate often. It is so hard to find a really good hot chocolate. Starbucks, did cut it! They have a hot chocolate to die for!
My husband and I go here almost ever Sunday morning for breakfast and reading the paper. I have stuck with the classic oatmeal with brown sugar and strawberries! He typically gets the breakfast burrito. We have NO complaints. Everything is well priced, the coffee is really great and the atmosphere is friendly.
You can't go wrong at Henry's .. the staff also rocks!
Have you ever just woken up in the morning and decided you wanted cake for breakfast? Not a donut or a muffin or a scone or any other similar cake-like but not technically cake variety of carbohydrate, but a large wedge of regal, frosted, double layer cake? Well, if you go to Henry's for breakfast and say "cake" to them at 8 in the morning they will hand it over like it ain't no thing.
In other news, they also have good normal breakfast food. For some reason, their yogurt parfait just speaks to me, as do their coffee drinks. The specials can get expensive, but if you stick with the basics you'll be good to go.
The epitome of what a great local coffee shop can be - friendly and efficient, they have it down. Â I'm not a fancy coffee drink guy, so I stick with their regular brew and always enjoy lingering over a second or third cup while I soak up the atmosphere.
Have only done breakfast here (it is one of my fav breakfast meeting locations) - the breakfast sandwiches are affordably priced and come with a side of either yogurt or whole fruit. Â
The clientele is often a mix of regulars, guests from the awesome bed and breakfast next door and business meetings. Â They do have wireless internet and there are often a few people camped out working for a few hours as well.
Outdoor seating is available and one of my favorite things about Henry's is the location - just a block off Mass Ave and a half block off the Indianapolis Cultural Trail - I'm often arriving by bicycle and appreciate the bike rack that is available.
For those driving here -it is worth noting that the street parking is free, but it is often fairly full. Â There is a small parking lot right between the bed and breakfast and Henry's building...with an awesome mural painted on the wall that you won't want to miss either!
Great spot for breakfast. In fact, I've never had a better bagel. I am so glad a friend of mine introduced me to the Rabbit Bagel. With sprouts, tomato and cream cheese--and a side of fresh fruit or yogurt--it is absolutely delicious. If I could roll out of bed a half hour earlier and wasn't so frugal, you'd find me sitting out front of Henry's at least once a week devouring the Rabbit Bagel and sipping a mocha. Fun atmosphere, and there's always cool artwork adorning the walls. All the pastries and muffins in the counter are always so mouthwatering, but I'm definitely a creature of habit, so I just stick with the aforementioned selections.
Review Source:We were early for church and wanted to grab a quick bite to eat. The atmosphere was really inviting and everyone on staff spoke to us at least once!
The food was good, but not great. I had quiche and my guest had a croque madame. The crust of the quiche wasn't done and the bread on the croque wasn't that great. Otherwise these two dishes would have been perfect. The fruit was fresh and the coffee was great!
I will definitely return.
Pop Quiz:
What are the defining characteristics of an excellent coffee shop?
A. Calming ambience
B. Friendly/helpful staff
C. Unique interior design
D. Quality (fresh) drink selections
E. Accessible location
F. A & D
G. All of the Above
Ok, who am I kidding? Everyone knows that whenever "All of the Above" is an answer choice, it's all of the above! Sheesh, Yelpers are too smart for their own good!
I find Henry's to be one of my favorite Coffee Shops in Indianapolis. While I have no idea who "Henry" is, I'd certainly like to shake his hand for giving his name to such an outstanding business. As previously mentioned, they possess everything that a quality coffee shop should have. Further, because I was excessively dropped as a child (kidding! Love you moms!), I appreciate how they always remember what I want to order. I mean...come on, who doesn't like to feel special?! Speaking of adolescence and my Mom, Henry's arguably has the best brownies you will find. ANYWHERE!! they put the BOW! in brownie! Like a kung-fu chop to the taste buds!
To top it off, Henry's also always has some of the coolest art displayed inside the café. There is also a REALLY cool mural that is being painted on the North-facing wall.
I HIGHLY suggest enjoying your coffee, lunch, pastry, etc. outside, because the trees create a very pleasant environment. In all, if you're looking for a first-rate coffee shop, Henry's is a fantastic choice.
If you have to spend the whole day on and off of Mass Ave, it's certainly not a bad thing to spend much of it at Henry's. While I didn't grab any food from this adorable little cafe, I sampled many a beverage and took in the overall ambiance of the place as the day rolled on!
If it's a gorgeous day, grab a seat on the patio. The shady trees and variety of seating makes it a lovely place to sit and enjoy your latte. Be aware, though, the street can get super loud with multiple buses coming through! Inside, Henry's (at least in the morning hours) is like a library. So. Quiet. As in so quiet I felt like I was being too loud. But that's neither here nor there.
As for the drinks, I was quite fond of my hazelnut latte. It was made with the right amount of foam and neither too sweet or too dull. A lovely way to start the day, if I do say so. Both prices and staff were friendly and I have no doubt I could wedge myself into a corner and get a ton of work done.
Great coffee, great food, great service and definitely great people. They know their regulars and they treat them like old friends.
I suggest the BLT Bagel with the avocado aioli. Also, are perfectly willing and happy to make a coffee drink that is not on their menu. For example, a latte with cinnamon and honey. They make it very well.
Cute place a bit off the beaten path - and as a bonus, there was no metered parking in front! Â The service was great and my iced mocha was excellent (so much better than Starbucks, actually).
My only complaint is that it was busy (not a bad thing for the shop though....) and that space was at a premium.
Excellent cappuccino, one of the best I've had in Indy (4.5 stars out of 5). Â We also ordered a bread pudding muffin plus an egg + cheese sandwich on a bagel. Â The bread pudding muffin was very good ...I don't necessarily believe that it was intended to be a breakfast item, but it worked! Â They warmed it up and put a nice icing on it, delightful (4 stars). Â As for the bagel sandwich, it wasn't mind-blowingly different than what you'd expect but was tasty nonetheless (3.5 stars).
We loved the cappuccinos and the friendly service. Â I'd happily return to Henry's the next time I'm downtown looking for caffeine/breakfast.
I've been a regular at Henry's for the past couple of years. This fabulous local spot has great, affordable bottomless cups of coffee and a wide selection of delicious sandwiches and salads. I had the BLT bagel for lunch today and it changed my life. Lots of crispy bacon, fresh tomato, and a yummy avocado aioli spread served with a side of fresh strawberries -- a perfect summer lunch.
Henry's has a great atmosphere and is friendly to work-at-homers like me who need to get out of the house occasionally. You'll see a mix of people on laptops plus locals hanging out or having meetings. Friendly and spunky staff will remember your order and serve it up with a smile (or some good-natured ribbing).
Don't miss Henry's on East!
A great coffee shop just north of Mass Ave on East street, they have a nice dog-friendly patio with lots of seating. Â They have free wi-fi and a tasty breakfast/lunch menu. Â
I usually get a latte and one of the breakfast sandwiches to go if I want something to propel me for a whole day! Â They have great portions and fresh fruit is always an option for a side.
What an adorable coffee shop!! Yes, I said adorable. Â Warm, cozy, welcoming, all the things coffee shops should be...and great prices! Â We decided to indulge in some dessert and caffeine after the brew-fest yesterday and give me a little break from walking. Â It was nice to sit in the comfy leather chairs and I got a peanut butter cookie the size of my head (literally) that was just the right balance of peanut buttery and crunchy! Â I want another - though the size really was intimidating!
They made me an iced white mocha which I tweeked the order on just a bit, b/c ...wait for it - they do NOT mess around on shots! Â The 24 ounce drink comes with 4(!!!) shots of espresso, which is pure madness! Â I went for 1/3 full caf, the rest decaf. Â It was made quite well, stirred and I cut the pumps of WM to 2 instead of 4, b/c I don't like it to be too sweet. Â
Absolutely enjoyable. Â While I am a huge Starbucks whore, this place was quieter and definitely great for the study, read-a-book, relax and be alone crowd. Â It is in a very trendy area that is growing with upper middle class singletons of Indy, and I can see it really thriving and doing well in the Mass Ave. neighborhood (which it obviously is considering it was pretty full on a Saturday afternoon and the five-star reviews here) for a very long time. Â Definitely skip Starbucks and try Henry's if you are nearby. Â You won't regret it.
Henry's is a cute coffee shop tucked away on East st. just north of Mass ave. Â I must say, the coffee is some of the best I have had. Â
The Saturday and Sunday brunch specials are very good, my only complaint is there is usually only a couple of options. Â That being said, I have had the brunch special two weeks in a row and was very satisfied each time. Â During my latest visit I was served with a spinach, provolone, tomato and pesto quesadilla with a side of bacon and yogurt parfait.
A strong recommendation is their delicious cinnamon rolls. Â Request it heated with some butter on top!
Gotta love Henry's. Â The coffee and espresso are great. The staff here is very friendly and can't be beat. Â The pesto chicken sandwich, BLT bagel and biscuits and gravy (weekends only) are delicious. Â
The location and ambiance really set it apart from its competition. Â I love relaxing with a coffee outside during the summer. Â The indoors area is well-lit and is a great place to study, work or meet with friends. Â This is as close to the setting of a european neighborhood cafe as you will find in Indianapolis. Â This is my clean, well-lighted place.
This is a lovely coffeeshop tucked away behind Mass Ave on (here comes a big surprise) East St. I know, you're shocked.
The staff are friendly and helpful, the food is so good (I love the veggie panini--It's stuffed full of veggies and is tasty and good for two meals), the coffee is delicious, not like Burnt'coffee'forFourBucks. Ahem.
As a grad student who likes to mix up my work environment, I love the easy outlet availability (no one needs to stare down that one person who's been hogging the only power supply in the building the whole day). WiFi is free (YAY!) and, seriously, BLAZING fast. I love.
The place is a little hard to find parking for (not the owner's fault, I know) so that limits my ability to go there, and I sometimes find the tables and chairs a little uncomfortable. And in the winter, it is seriously FREEZING in there. I've had to leave because I was just too cold to sit there.
Aside from my personal issues with aesthetics and temperature, the place is rock solid and worth a visit.
Rarely do I venture away from black coffee -- made one-cup-at-a-time as a pour over at home. Rarely do I even venture away from all the control of coffee from my hands... that's usually only reserved for The Clover or a world-class barista. Now... if I'm not drinking coffee, then, heck, why don't I just place an order that works within their arena -- like a true macchiato, or a latte, or, in this case, a breve cappucino. Uh, whoa, that was pretty life-altering.
Tim C recommended the breve to me (half & half instead of milk). He was right. Then, I got the skinny from the owner of Henry's as to why it sits apart from the rest: fat. The fat content in the cream of the  1/2 &  1/2 allows for a smoother, heartier pull of espresso & opens up flavor. Yet again, fat to the rescue!
Dense, roasty, espresso woven with dense, rich cream. Whoa. Sold.
When I first arrived in Indianapolis I wondered where all of the cafes were (beyond Starbucks). Â I wasn't looking for coffee; I was really looking for a tribe of people huddled over laptops to join.
I found them at Henry's on East Street. Â It is a bright, mellow cafe with good music and a neighborhood vibe. Â Straight-forward food offerings that could be a meal or a snack. Â Plentiful seating that includes a sidewalk patio. Â Free wifi.
Great local coffee shop. Small but nice selection of teas. Good food (standard cafe variety from what I could tell). Great layout. Wonderful, warm service. Plenty of outlets to let you enjoy the free wireless.
No real cautionary notes on this place. It was very crowded when I stopped by at lunch time on a recent rainy day, but seats are generally available when I've stopped in during the afternoon or early evening.
Nice mixed crowd with a blend of regulars and visitors to Mass Ave.
I agree with all other reviews of this place and have nothing to add except:
Keywords: study cafe
There. Now when someone is looking for a downtown coffee house that's also a good place to study, Henry's will come up ... just as it should.
PS - Oh yeah, and the brownies here are fantastic.
If you're headed to Starbucks definitely keep going and head straight to Henry's! It's located in the same spot where Vic's once was.
The coffee is better, costs less, and the food portions are generous for the price. They have a pretty broad menu, but they'll make salads to order. The paninis are yummy, and there's homemade soups in the winter and fruit smoothies in summer.
Can't forget to mention the staff, who are always great, always friendly -- no matter how early in the a.m.!
As for atmosphere, it's how I'd love my living room to be -- open, very comfy yet modern living. Relaxing sums it up best (I've seen more than a few people 'resting their eyes' while their order was prepped!) Cream walls, oversized comfy overstuffed chairs, plenty of seating (and tables set with cloth tablecloths and organicly-styled centerpieces -- how's that for attention to detail!).
Other pluses: wi-fi (plenty of lap-top totting patrons!) and a range of people with varied backgrounds and ages -- gay, straight, young and old.
