I have loved James's Gate for years. I used to live closer and it was my go-to pub. I had taken my Dad there, my friends, and anybody coming out of town. I wanted to show them the best "pub" in the area.

What makes it so good? The food is amazing. So are the drinks and the beer selection. I feel like many bars don't have a "real" chef. That sounds terrible, and I could be wrong, but I feel like for a pub it is more about the drinking and general pub food (fries, burgers etc...) could get away with a less experienced cook. Again, I could be wrong, I am not in the food industry. But, I do know that Jame's Gate has an amazing chef on board. His name on the menu and I feel like a jerk for not remembering. The presentation of the food is great and it tastes amazing. I like their meatloaf and a fish stew that they have. Brunch is also great.

As stated, drinks are good. Great Bloody Mary's for brunch. Beer selection is on point.

I like how the bar area has a fireplace that they get going in the winter. Cozy. The dining room is separate from the bar and very nice. This works for a nice dinner out, or a drink at the bar to watch a game. As I said, I've been going here several years and am never disappointed.

We looove James's Gate! It's one of our most favorite JP places and having lived here for 18 years (!) I've tried them all. We always come back to the Gate for their yummy food and great cozy atmosphere. It's great to sit on the bar side but we also love the restaurant side for "fancier" occasions.

I'm never disappointed with the service or food here! A++!

FYI: Some people in other reviews are mad that they sat on the bar side and no one took their order. If you sit on that side, you need to walk up to the bar and place your order. There are not waiters in the bar area.

I can't believe I have been living in JP for a year now, and I only had dinner here last week. Why????

James's Gate is my favorite spot in JP now. Thank god because I was looking for a new neighborhood hang out since the mission is no longer nearby. I like how it's divided into 2 sections. One is the more casual bar/pub scene. It has a decent sized bar for the space, tables and even a fireplace. I can imagine in the winter it must be very cozy. The other side is the restaurant portion, but still casual. There is a bar there too, but more sit down tables for dinner.

Good beer selection, and the menu has a wide variety. My inner child had been craving mac n'cheese so I ordered that. A-maze. I made it extra unhealthy by adding bacon. I loved it

Our waitress was very nice and quick, but she still backed off enough to give me and my friend some space. I seriously had an awesome time here. So glad it's just down the street from me. I know where I'll be hanging out this summer :)

I enjoyed my lunch at James' Gate. Went there with colleagues for a work lunch and get excellent service from the waiter. Granted we were only one of two tables for the guy but he did a good job.

Really enjoyed my gouda, bacon and apple sandwich and thought it was grilled to perfection. Fries were good, nothing too special. Loved the dessert we got - a mini apple tart thing with caramel. Delicious!

Would certainly come back in future and definitely want to try out the dinner and late night scene.

Closer to 3.5 stars,

The restaurant section has that familiar feel when you walk in. Comfortable, laid back, tasteful but not upscale. The music selection the night I went was solid.

Drink selection is pretty darn good and they have a very respectable beer list. I got the Shepherds Pie and it was Ok. Nothing to write home about, but not bad. Service was very good.

I definitely want to go here again soon. I saw some dishes that looked outstanding, so I'd like to see what else they have to offer.

I usually avoid stereotypical bar/restaurant hybrids for a good sit-down meal experience. However, I was really pleasantly surprised by this establishment. James's Gate is separated into two section; one is section is reserved for a quieter sitdown mean, while the other half is reserved for a more casual, bar-like scene.

I came here for dinner with a group of friends and were immediately impressed by the fast and pleasant restaurant staff. They frequently came to replenish soft-drinks and water, and happily gave us repeated helpings of the fresh-off-the-oven baked breads with bowls of olive-filled oil for dipping. In terms of food, I managed to sneak a couple of bites from everyone's trays and was really impressed with the fish and chips platter. Unlike many of my previous extremely over-fried, bland slabs of white-fishmeats, the fish I had here were much more flavorful and felt less deep fried fried. Their meatloaf/lasagna didn't particularly knock my socks off, but they weren't bad either.

In summary, I was pleasantly surprised and had a really good time here. I might give the other half side of the restaurant a try the next time I come here.

Food: 3 stars
Service: 3 stars (kinda of a hipster vibe)
Decor: 3 stars
Experience: 4 stars

This is a great spot to have a pint.

I prefer the casual bar side. It's really nice to walk in on a cold and wintry day and warm your toes by the roaring fire. They have some board games laying around that you can play with friends over a few beers on a lazy afternoon/evening. The menu on the pub side trends toward hearty and fried items, but they serve food late night. It is just really cozy and makes you feel at home.

When it's warm out you can also sit outside on the patio. Nothing special out there, but probably the best patio in JP.

The restaurant side is a little more upscale, but the food doesn't seem to justify the higher prices compared to the pub menu. There is some good rotating artwork on the walls and enough room for groups.

I love the gate plate and shepherd's pie.

I'm a big fan of James's Gate, the food is really good, and the people are friendly... Sometimes the food was over-salted, but not often. I love the mussels, great appetizer to split with the group!

After a mishap in the parking lot I had to engage the Management. Brian on the restaurant side was prompt and courteous to escalate the situation to the owner Paul Byrne. I called him, he called me - we spoke and Brian had given the owner Paul the whole situation. So Paul was prepared when I asked him to help me out with the minor repair to my car.

Now I've always felt (and now I KNOW!) that James's Gate is a little community gem where people are quick to smile and often share tables in the pub 'family style'.

Owner Paul directed me to Elite Bodyworks just down the street in Roslindale.

http://www.elite-bodywor…

When I got there Elite owner Ken had anticipated my arrival since Paul from James's Gate called to give him a head's up.

Thank YOU Paul and Ken for taking care of me, my car and I had a great burger and beer FIRESIDE! Which is why I LOVE JAMES'S GATE in the first place!

When I worked in the area, I used to hit up this place after work with coworkers for drinks and apps.

I've had about everything on the menu and found everything to be good- typical bar-type food. There's lots of seating options- a bar, booths, and tables. Various beers on tap. Quick service.

It's a winner for after work drinks.

I come here more for the food than the drinking, and it's good enough to get all five stars.

Now, this isn't a michelin star restaurant, but they definitely take pub food to the next level. You'll find Irish staples that have been modified for a touch of class, resulting in delicious plates. Instead of bangers and mash with gravy, they top the potatoes off with demi-glaze. Its that type of creativity that makes this place great.

The bartenders there are also awesome. Knowledgable and mix up mean drinks. Definitely check this place out.

If any have seen any of my previous reviews of Irish pubs I usually find it almost impossible to find a decent meal, well this is an exception to that. The menu is typical pub fare but they manage to do it well.

The evening we were there we started with beers and wine, decent selection of beer.
for entrees i ordered the Shepard's pie, ground beef and lamb with veggies topped with mashed (traditional) served hot and lots of flavor. Not a bad portion size, overall very good. My wife ordered the steak tips with mashed, done well, flavorful and tender..

Reasonable prices, service was good, would recommend for quick dinner of to get together with friends.

First things first- if you sit on the pub side at a table then you order at the bar. Sometimes they'll come take your order but don't get all whiny if they don't- deal with it.

The menu has a solid variety of items- appetizers, traditional irish food, sandwiches, salads, entrees. The chicken fingers are awesome, seriously. Good hand-cut fries.

Beer selection is satisfying but not huge.

Atmosphere is comfortable, even more so in the winter with the fireplace going.

The restaurant has a good layout. There's a restaurant section, a pub section, and an outdoor patio. So far, I've eating in the restaurant and the patio. Loved it and definitely should go on a nice day so you can eat outside.

The beer selection is good, although beer is pretty pricey. The food is amazing. I have eaten just the nachos and the loaded fries. They are to die for. I have been here twice and would go back in a heart beat.

The staff is nice and attentive. Definitely recommend.

One of the Worst Dining Experiences I've ever had in my life.
First of all, as someone in the hospitality business, I know good service, and James's Gate has the worst service I've ever seen. Not only did they ignore our group, but they were overtly rude. We waited for 30 minutes for someone to take our order and then another 30 minutes to receive it. Once we did, the food was lukewarm and barely satisfying.

There are much better places around Jamaica Plain to eat than this terrible restaurant.

Seems you have to be a local or a regular to get noticed around here. I'm neither.
I'm a bit out of my element in JP as it is, so I wasn't stoked to seat myself at a corner table and proceed to sit at it for 15 without a single person acknowledging our party was there. We made eye contact with the bartender and another waiter (? I think? he seemed to just be tending to the fire). No one tried to get us drinks or food, so we left.

I won't come back.

Oh, and PS, the beer selection's not that awesome. Maybe 10-12 draft beers, one of which was kinda funky (Old Speckled Hen). The rest you'd find on rotation anywhere.

What's not to love; a great selection of beers, a wonderful menu and a real cast of characters frequenting the establishment. The interior is a bit rough not unlike pubs I visited in the Irish country side. Unlike the pubs in Dublin that became "slick" while I was living there, the best pubs retained that earthy quality. Jame's Gate has it.

The food here is terrific. These folks are not one to skimp on the portions so bring your A game of consumption. A BLT was stuffed with bacon, awesome fresh tomatoes on a thick ciabatta bread. The meat loaf, on a huge bed of mashed potatoes, was incredible. Unlike my mother's meat loaf that was only suitable to throw at someone during a riot, this meat loaf was perfect. I ordered beer instead of my usual martini because it felt like 110 degrees outside and immediately suffered buyers remorse when a very large perfectly clear martini appeared at the next table. I need to return for a sample.

Service is a bit odd; on a late afternoon you ordered at the bar. The bartender was efficient and once an order was entered it arrived PDQ.
Finally there was a real cast of characters from a gentleman dressed in a sport coat to a unusually tattooed guy pounding down beers at the end of the bar, a very eclectic group of customers indeed.

James's Gate is a lovely little pub in JP. The food seems pretty decent and so does the beer selection. Last time I was there, I ordered a cheese plate and a Caesar salad. The cheese plate was grossly lacking in cheese, I am the chef even gave me the end rind of one of the cheeses, but I showed it to the bartender straight away. She brought it back to the kitchen and the cheese plate I got back from them was huge! Me = Delighted! Customer service win!

They also have an open fireplace and this pub really feels like it could easily be an Irish bar anywhere in Ireland. I wish I lived closer to the place so I could go more often, it's pretty darn good!

I live a few doors down from the Gate. I won't say how many doors because if I gave YOU a bad review, i don't want to have you in my lawn messing up my roses again. Same to say, I live so close the Gate is like my living room. I just pop down there in the winter and it's like I have an Irish castle in my yard, complete with roaring fire and laughing drunken sailors and stuff. From the restaurant manager/artist Brian, to the affable art-boy bartender Bobby, the staff are excellent. Oh, Carlie the barmaid is so great. She got me drunk once when my asshole ex dumped me,
and held my head when I passed out at the bar.

You want to go to a place where you feel like Beowulf is about to bust in with some Glog in a skull shouting about fair maidens? The Gate is for you. Oh the food and beer selection is good, too.

Thank you J and P for treating!

As we sat down here, this is what we were saying, "It's it suppose to be 'James' Gate'? Maybe they were drunk when they registered the name and went, oh S*#)@!"

I got the three cheese omelet on a Easter Sunday brunch. Very hearty and delicious as it came with wheat (or white) toast and home potatoes. Thought that it would look more golden yellow like the Japanese kind. http://listverse.files.w…

Thanks for also providing great service (and extra apple jelly :) )!

Edit: Apparently James's is correct since James is singular and not plural. Thanks for the grammar lesson, Tracey N!

I love the Gate, but sometimes there are a lot of lesbians here. Don't get me wrong I love lesbians, I just don't *love* lesbians. Frankly because I am awesome, and funny and like to wear flannels (yes lesbians I just called you awesome and funny and said you like to wear flannels) I cannot help but almost always sort of pull a chick.

I am not a lesbian. So this kind of cramps my style while I am trying to chat up the OTHER huge population here; Grown ups in flannels with beards and Irishmen.

But I digress.

The Gate has a real life working fireplace.

The Gate has RAD bartenders that are that perfect mix of nice and mean.

The Gate has ok food, and it's a pub, so ok food is good food because you're drinking when you have it.

The Gate has huge MFing tables so you can have a group that grows and grows.

The Gate's tables are awesome and I am not a big interior decoration type person.

The Gate has loads of beer and sometimes, even when completely packed, you can hear yourself talk.

AND The Gate has a pretty decent mix of lesbians, Irishmen and grown ups with flannels and beards.

Jame's Gate (or Lame's Gate as many JPers call it), the wannabe Bredan Behan except it's full of yuppies, doesn't have much of a beer list, and has no soul (or dartboard).

What's good-it's clean, the food is ok and served late (expensive), pretty quiet. Mac & Cheese is real good.

Lame-yuppies, yelpers, not much beer, souless, not dog friendly.

The nacho's were huge and cheesy, with those yummy pickled jalapenos.

The Gate Plate had three different kinds of smoked fish, big fat capers, greens, onion. . .delish.

Bustling and loud on a Tues. night, wood, fireplace, warm, inviting. Seems like a good place to hang and stay warm. . .I got lost on the way back from the bathroom. Not sure that was their fault.

Whiskey. Scotch. Lots of beers on tap. Guinness, Leffe,Glenfiddich, Smithwicks, Glenfiddich.....? hmm. . . .maybe that explains the navigation problems. . .

Marc C told a story involving Crisco that almost made me pee myself laughing. I met some other great yelpers for the first time, and reconnected with some others. . .I'd go back just because of all that. Because I'm rather Pavlovian and I had a good experience in that location.

If the conditioning has taken, next time I'll just start laughing when I walk in the door. . .

Thank you, James's Gate. Thank you.

I've been here a couple of times while visiting Andy B. in JP. Both times were for a couple drinks and some dinner. The first time I went I only got a basket of fries, but then I went this past Friday to cure a serious case of the munchies. I was starving.

We got there around 10:00, so we were already on the late menu. The late menu pretty much means you are limited to one page of items. I went with the grilled chicken sandwich and fries. We also got a massive plate of nachos. The nachos were just fine, but when the chicken sandwich on ciabatta bread was put in front of me, I knew I had a date with destiny. Ultimately, I don't even know how many good things I can say about it. It was one of the greatest grilled chicken sandwiches I'd ever had. Andy B. and Yelper-by-association, KB, were chatting with each other while I kept my face practically buried in the plate, guarding my sandwich. When I did come up for air, they asked me how it was and I told them I would have loved to offer them some to taste, but this sandwich was all mine. I think I ate it in a flat 10 minutes, if that. Munchies? GONE.

After eating my sandwich, I didn't even want to move. I sat in the booth just relaxing and enjoying the fullness of my tummy. Washed down with a beer, I was in a good place. It was cozy, I was full, and I was with some good people. A successful evening indeed.

Food here is NOT good at all. It's a bad attempt at Boston style bar food and it has really nothing special on the menu.

I have had the fish and chips and they are not so good.

I also tried, this week, their nacho's and they were so freaking bad it was actually really funny. I don't know which was worse the 'out of the jar' "salsa" that was dumped on top, the out of jar "avocado dip" like guacamole or the unmelted shredded cheese that had clumped together? They ALL sucked and I should have asked for my money back.

If you want to sit around a low light fire place environment with NO servers and have to get up every time for another pint........ and wait at the bar for a generally unfriendly staff......then by all means, drop in.

I will admit it, I have only been to James' Gate once before this evening, but I do not remember much at all because I was completely schnockered. Before you start judging me, I will defend myself by stating that it was on St. Patrick's Day this year and I live in Boston. That should earn me a free pass. Add to that it was a weekend and I had a friend's birthday the day before that involved a LOT of Jameson's.

That being said, I really like this place. It is warm and cozy. One thing I really like about it is the fact that they aren't too pretentious or gimmicky. Let's face it, so many Irish inspired bars just simply go too far and it looks like a theme park attraction and doesn't read as authentic.

I had a meet-up with Kerri (if you ever have the same opportunity, it comes highly recommended). I have had a high stress level lately, and this is exactly what the doctor ordered.

We had the nachos and a few beers. The nachos were a very good portion, although we did notice the chips were a little stale. After knocking back a few cold ones and shooting the sh!t, we decided to head into the restaurant next door. We were seated by a very pleasant (in a genuine way) hostess.

The server was great. He didn't rush us and also read the table well. We were having great conversation, and he didn't interrupt us and made sure that we knew that we could sit and relax, there was no attempt to rush us out.

I had the acorn squash stuffed with panko and wild rice. It came with the choice of having it with or without chicken. This should be better explained on the menu. I ordered it with the chicken and it came out, oddly, on a separate plate, just plain grilled chicken in a dish. The stuffing was a little bland and dry, and the squash could have been roasted a little more to bring out its natural sweetness, but in general I was OK with the dish (the center was not hot but I dealt with it).

Being your usual Yelpers, some swapping was involved, and I got to try Kerri's smoked pork chop as well. It was very well cooked. The meat was tender and sweet, with just a hint of smokiness (I would have liked a little smokier). It came with roasted root vegetables. Roasted root vegetables! I am a firm believer that not enough restaurants serve roasted root vegetables, it is a disservice to our society. They were good. I like the fact that they cook them just right so they are still slightly firm. I do wish that they cut them into larger pieces, but that is just a personal preference.

James' Gate is a wonderful find and I plan on going back sooner than later. The softly lit bar area has a warm, relaxed feeling to it with the rough hewn farmer's table and hearth (I love a nice warm fireplace crackling in the crisp-aired months). They have a great draft beer selection, and the restaurant is more brightly lit and quieter with art on the walls. I wish there was a place like this closer to home.

Would I return? Hopefully sooner than later. I would definitely bring someone easy to chat with.

For the restaurant part:

After hoisting a couple with Marc, and nacho's would not suffice for dinner, we decided to eat in the swanky side of the Jame's Gate.

Well they had smoked porkchops, so that's what I got. Yummmy! Also, they came with roasted veggies, which included parsnips. I'm a total whore for parsnips. Suffice to say, I was happy.

I will note that they whipped my mashed taters, which isn't totally Kosher with me. Mashed taters should be mashed, otherwise you should call them whipped, I think.

And, to be honest, I get better smoked pork chops from my butcher. They are super-smoked, where as the ones at the Jame's Gate had only a hint of smokiness.

Service was grand. No complaints there.

Marc had the Acorn Squash, which was pretty good. I think it should have been roasted longer, though. Acorn squash is like sweet taters, they get better, the longer you roast them. Oh, and the Panko/Wild Rice stuffing was a mite dry. I'd have added some hard cider, or something,to it, to give it a tangy base.

Okay, okay, ok, so there is ONE patron out to kill you with hotness at James' Gate. Who it is will remain a mystery!

Oh, actually there is another patron who's out to kill you, but not with hotness, but with a HUGE oval-shaped sweat-patch on the back of his shirt. Deadly. Quite rightly.

With guidance from some cliquey fellow yelpers, we made our way on foot to James's Gate. Wait, should that be James' Gate? Whatever...... it's close to my apartment and cozycakes sooo, I'll just glaze over any Irish grammatical errs. The place looks like a castle, which is pretty silly....but it has a really nice outdoor patio and while I totally must've overlooked the fireplace....apparently it has one. A fireplace. Not a moat though, a fireplace.

The interior is mostly rich wood and consists of benches, stools, and chairs. Very comfortable for large groups coming for libations. We ordered the nachos and the calamari. The nachos were pretty loaded with hardened cheese, olives, jaleps, and plenty of salsa, sour cream, and guaca. The calamari was pretty standard, not heavy fried and served with cocktail sauce and a lemon wedge...one complaint is they only give you one itty cup of cocktail sauce and it's my own lazy fault for not asking for more. Both portions were pretty large and plenty for our party of 5. Like the TV show....we're all just SO attractive. But I'm still whiny.

What really stood out was the service, multiple times some really nice dood would come up and clear the empty glasses off the table leaving us room for hand gesturing and possibly a game of backgammon if we so chose. They have games here, seriously. Prices were decent as well, I think my pint of Magners was somewhere around $4.50 and the apps both about $9. It was a little overly loud for a Thursday night, even though there weren't many people there. Maybe I'm getting crabby in my old age, maybe. Or I'm just deaf to begin with.

Cue Shanna Moakler:

There are a lot of things I love about James's Gate.
1) They put the apostrophe in the right place. Almost no one knows how to write a possessive when the name ends in an s.
2) They're close to my place in JP. I can go there, have a little drinky drink, and walk home.
3) As an Irish bar, they have Magners Cider on tap. Yum!
4) I love their nachos, and I'm a big fan of turkey burgers, but they have this delicious concoction that I love above everything else.
It is called loaded fries. They are french fries, covered in cheese, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, and a drizzle of spicy sauce. I love them. I can sadly finish the whole healthy portion by myself. But that's why I walk there and back, to not feel so bad.

The fireplace in the winter has caused my boyfriend and his friends to dub it their "winter bar".

I like a lot of bars in JP, but James Gate is my home stop. It's the best of the lot. It has perfectly decent food and a laid-back atmosphere that's perfect for bringing dominoes to. (If you're noticing there's a lot of domino talk in these reviews, it's because everyone who loves James Gate knows each other and plays dominoes together there. Don't try to join us though, we're pretty cliquey.) It can get a mite crowded at peak times, which isn't really its fault - everyone knows it rules - but not like Foggy Goggle crowded, just "you might have to wait for a table" crowded.

And in the summer they have a terrific outdoor patio, which is key because there aren't enough places to drink outside in Boston.

And once I ran into the singer for my college band when I accidentally went into the women's bathroom, so that was pretty cool.

UPDATE: And you know what else? The other day I was there and I ran into the trombone player from my reggae band in Denver. What is it with this place and people I used to be in bands with? How fuckin' weird is that? Anyway, if you're looking for a trombone player let me know because that guy is fucking awesome at the trombone, seriously.

Three pieces of advice on The Gate:

1. Several people have mentioned this but it might not be clear to a newcomer--the place is divided into two sides: a pub side and a restaurant side. They have seperate menus but on the restaurant side you can order off of both menus (though you have to request the pub menu).

2. When they're in season, the steamed mussels appetizer is enormous, comes with a nice broth, and with the fresh bread they supply, can make for the better part of a meal in itself.

3. They have a big parking lot on McBride St. (their cross street) if you can't find parking easily on South St.

On the whole I find the food good but not great (though I'm a West Coast food snob). I often like the pub food better--it's unfussy and hard to screw up. One gripe about the place is that it has almost no windows and there is something a bit dreary about being in a space with no natural light. On the pub side that is off-set by a nice big fireplace! The seasonal patio seating does wonders to the atmospherics of the place.

James Gate
We have the same initials- JG- and it's around the corner from my old apartment, so we're fated.

James Gate has been my spot for Monday night trivia (hosted by Nicole P. 8-10 p.m., you should go!), after-softball gatherings, casual dinners, summer evenings on the patio, and 1 random 10 people-at-the-large-wooden-pub-table Easter Sunday meal.

My opinions on the food:
The fried fish is sometimes good and sometimes not
The veggie burger is one of my faovrite veggie burgers
Grilled veggie salad w. blue cheese is delicous, I add shrimp
Baked brie, when they have it, rocks.

What else? Carlie the bar tender is fabulous. The guy who serves and busses on trivia nights is lovely- what's his name?

Oh, and they have a fire place! It's where I want to be all winter!

Since Husband and I have recently moved to JP we've been trying out new places as we go along. We'd been to James' Gate before, but after spending a few hours drinkin' and playin' dominoes there last night I thought it was high time for a review.

The place just has a great atmosphere. Nothing too fancy. But not divey/gross either. Very comfortable- a great word to describe this place. You feel welcome. The food is great. Reasonably priced menu and drinks. The wait staff can be a little hit or miss, but mostly a hit. Patio in the summer. Warm, woody, bar complete with fireplace in the winter. And really, really good nachos. I can see myself spending way too much time and money at the gate.

Great pub with an outdoor patio which is great for summer afternoons/evenings and an adjacent apparently very good (but more pricey) restaurant.
The service was excellent (the waiter tried very hard to inquire about the best vegan food options for us and didn't charge me for a new beer when a wasp had flown into my half-empty glass). The food was delicious and inexpensive. The beer was good. What's not to like?

James Gate is a fun, truly Irish pub in JP!

I am slightly biased since I host trivia there Monday nights (8-10) and yes you should come! I generate a mostly lesbian crowd but everyone is welcome and it's free to play with decent prizes for the top 3 winning teams.

The pub has 2 menus, one pubbish with burgers, fish and chips etc and one slightly fancier with beet soup and steak. The bar has a good selection of beer and my favorite bartender, Carlie, is adorable and attentive!

There is a good parking lot and in the winter the "pub" room has a real fireplace!

I met up with a few people here after work for a drink. First thing I noticed: they have a patio that YOU CAN SMOKE ON! Clearly I'm already in love. We had probably the best waitress ever- Thea. She put up with our neediness and even told us at the end of the night we were one of her favorite tables ever.

I was starving when I got there so I ordered a Turkey Club off of the Pub menu. It seemed to take an unusually long time but whatevs. The sandwich was good but I liked the quesadilla that one of the other girls ordered better. All of us were drinking these lemon vodka things that involved a lot of muddling and the waitress never once seemed aggravated (waitresses on he patio make their own drinks).

I was drunk by the time we left but I remember the bill for the 4 of us was cheap even though we had been there for about 4 hours. We all had a blast and definitely plan on meeting up there again.

The place was very nice. I went here for a little pub grub and grab a beer. the service was helpful. The burger that I got was cooked wonderfully. My friend got nachos and they were a huge plate. The chips looked like they were made at the place. All of the food was very affordable. The dinner menu looked a little pricey.
We sat in the outdoor seating section. Was very nice and will go back again.

The Gate is one of my favorite pubs in Boston.
Comfortable Irish goth. 30 somethings. Real Fireplace. Red walls and golumbs. Long wooden tables and benches. Fried fish sandwich and chili fries. Just Remember if you are ordering pub side you have to order at the bar! Ask and thou shalt receive.Happening music. Friendly or fast bartenders.

Summer turns the parking lot into prime patio with fake astro turf.
PS. The patio faces the projects, are you down?

Go celebrate restaurant side and you can still order pub food here!! Note: the trivia folks have taken over Monday nights Restaurant Side.
Expensive art. Lamb. Rotating fish dishes. Weak mussels. Creamy mash, divine Tiramisu, and lots of other choices.

Gate moments:
My 26th May birthday here, safe from the bizarre hail storm.
I watched the Sox here in 2004 win some epic games against the Yankees. Special 1:1 JP head time. Pregaming for Jeanie Johnston's townie karioke horror show. And finally-- I've brought my Irish cousins here and they swear it looks just like the front face of the original James's Gate in Dublin-

Stick with the "pub side" if you're on a budget. About the Pub side: The nachos, steak au pauvre and burgers (regular, turkey or veggie, which you can customize with standard or more exotic toppings - including blue cheese and carmelized onion mayo!) are among the best deals in JP. The Gate is a good place to take a date because it's cozy, dark and relaxed. It's extra romantic when the fireplace is going. Wouldn't go on a first date, though, unless you're feeling extra lucky: the *only* downside is that it can get very crowded and you have to "vulture" for a table. Sometimes you get one quickly, sometimes you have to wait for about 1/2 hour, smooshed among your fellow vultures, making small talk. It's worth the wait, though.
"Fancy side" is good, too.
