So here is my negative rant.... we all get one (or a few) right (when deserved of course)?
I have been to this bar twice. Â I have never recieved good service at the bar. Â I did not have the food. Â Let me just say, without a bias opinion of the place, I usually do not frequent places like this, but I always give a place a fair chance. Â If it is bad the first time I usually figure someone is having a bad day or it is not typical of the establishment. Â The second time if bad service happens again, I will more than likely never return. Â The crowd was "typical" for the establishment, if you know what I mean. Â Nothing cool, cultural, or eclectic about this place. Â
I ordered two beers and a whiskey coke. Â It was about 11pm on a friday. Â The bartenders were very busy, which I understand, I was a bartender for years. Â With that being said, the one I had the pleasure of "enjoying", apparently did not like me. Maybe I wasnt dressed skimpy enough. Â He ignored me for about 20 minutes after we did not recieve one of our drinks. Â I did not say anything, I waited patiently. Â He returned with a scowl and said "Can I help you?" Â I politely asked for the drink we didnt receive. Â He left and came back slamming the drink in front of me not returning again. So we left. Â
Not only was this completely disrespectful, there was absolutely no reason for the treatment. I will never understand when people are working for tips, even if they are upset about something, leave your attitude at the door and smile and nod or just get out of the service industry. Like I said, it may not be everyone working there or the establishment itself, it never is. It unfortunately ruins a customer(s) experience by one person who represents the establishment.
I absolutely love seeing The Good Foot, a "Kansas City Soul" group, play at The Levee, and they play there a couple of times per month. I always make sure to use the bar upstairs when they play, because downstairs is very crowded and difficult to get a drink. (Check out The Good Foot to see when they're playing -- definitely makes for a fun night out: http://thgdft.com)
My grandma hates hearing about any weekend plans involving a bar, but when I happened to mention THe Levee she was thrilled. She used to frequent the place as a North Kansas City HS grad and loved it, which makes me love The Levee even more.
Only thing I've found worth complaining about is the lack of bathrooms.
Went on a Friday night -- got there early to get a table a little after 9. Â The Good Foot played from 10 on and it got PACKED. Â Decided to ditch the table around 11 so we could stand in the back to get some air.
The food was just okay -- ordered a spin dip to munch on, which was more spinachy than I'd like, could have used a little more artichoke. Â Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing though. Â I was pleased they served food 'til 1:30 a.m.
Considering the size of the crowd and how hard it was to get from one corner to another, our service was impressively quick. Â Our waitress did a superb job, though I felt sorry for her having to deal with her already-too-tipsy customers who were quite rude to her.
Seemed like it could get rowdy by the end of the night -- by midnight, we had already witnessed a couple heated, drunken conversations; we were told by the musicians it gets much more wild as the night goes on. The music was amazing -- the Good Foot puts on a fantastic live set -- and I enjoyed the first couple hours, minus the crowd. Â After that, it just wasn't my scene.
This review is specific to The Carriage House, the building next door to the Levee that's used to host private functions. Wow. We had a memorial gathering for a very dear friend held here, and I couldn't believe how great the space was - the layout was comfortable, location was fantastic, parking was a breeze, and the staff at the Levee was so helpful - I have absolutely zero complaints. It's definitely a little secret in the city. Had I known about it when I still lived in KC, I definitely would have hit them up sooner for a reception or two.
Review Source:This is the type of bar I'd ordinarily never step foot in, primarily because I'd never heard of its existence. Â I have now been in here twice. Â Once was during the Pub Crawl for Cancer back in May. Â It was pretty lackluster then, but then again, I didn't stay very long and it was during the day.
I visited The Levee once again last weekend, on a Friday night. Â The place was definitely hopping. Â We paid a $5 cover and a band performing mostly 70s funk was playing. Â The band was pretty good. Â The crowd was very diverse and mainly consisted of people in their 30s and 40s rocking out on the dance floor, with random clusters of younger people off to the side taking shots.
The service here was very fast. Â I ordered a cheese quesadilla from the kitchen. Â It was actually quite good and it was served with chips and fresh salsa. Â Domestic drinks are average price here. Â I have no idea what the prices of shots are, but I certainly had quite the tab here. Â Oops.
Like I said, this isn't the type of place I'd normally hang out. Â I'd definitely go here with a friend, but it's not really my "scene" if you catch my drift.
