Penny's Noodle Shop would be much more enjoyable if they decreased the amount of soy sauce in their signature dishes. I absolutely love their pot stickers and Pad See Ew (Pad Si Ew), but I have stayed away from eating there because of the exremely high sodium content in their soy drenched entrees.
I've asked for light soy when ordering Pad See Ew on my last visit - took three times as long to prepare and tasted like S%^t.
I'd rather drop in Big Bowl to get my fix of noddles, dumplings and pot stickers. And eating there dose not require downing a gallon or two of water afterwards.

Highlights: Great food and you cannot beat the prices! I went with my friend who was in town visiting to grab something quick to take away. We didn't plan ahead so asked for some recommendations at the counter and were pointed in the right direction. I honestly couldn't tell you what we ate, but it was all delicious. I know we had one pad thai and two other dishes, one of which was curry based. We went to pay and literally were blown away by how cheap it was. Three dishes were like $20! And we definitely had leftovers.

Although we didn't eat inside, it seemed crowded and understaffed for a Friday. Servers were constantly running to and fro. The kitchen was very efficient and we didn't wait long, but my observation was that it was mostly a place to grab and go.

This review is for the Northfield location, but posting it here because they don't have their own Yelp page. Went to Penny's for lunch today -- I was pretty disappointed. My office is about 10 minutes away and we had takeout. I ordered the Pad Se Ew with beef, and it was exremely bland. The only thing that seemed seasoned was the beef. I cringe at what the dish would have tasted like if I ordered the tofu. Also, there was hardly any egg in the dish. However, the texture of the noodles was great and the broccoli was fresh. Overall, I was less than impressed.

My coworker ordered the Pad Thai and seemed similarly unimpressed with his meal -- good texture, but very very bland overall.

I can't speak for the other dishes on the menu, but at least the Pad Se Ew and the Pad Thai were extremely underwhelming. I don't think I'll be coming here in the future.

I've been to this place twice and both times....wow! wow! wow! The service is very good and the prices are not that bad for how delicious the entrees they serve are. I just recently made a visit to this place and I got the "Hot Pepper Noodle" which is one of the most popular meals per the waiter. It was incredible and I for sure will be getting it again. One of the bonuses they have is that there are two different sauces at the table that also can be applied to the meal. WIINNING! I loved the sauces so much that I literally went over to other open tables to get additional sauce for my meal. It's difficult for me to describe the sauces, but they offer a spicy blend that is a perfect compliment to the noodles.

I didn't expect much going here my first time, but I was surprised by how good it was. Our waiter was great as well. My overall impression is that it's a good meal at a good price but nothing out of this world.

I don't know how this place has poor reviews. I personally only have ever had one dish, the vegetable bowl, and it rocks. The peanuts give it that extra crunch, the cilantro is always fresh, the lime gives it the perfect citrus and their hot sauce...oh my god the hot sauce...SO GOOD. it's garlicy and spicy and delicious. and did I mention how big the servings are??? the veggie bowl is only $8 and you have enough to last you a week. Enormous. love love love.

Penny's is a serviceable spot for Thai, etc. in Lakeview. It's by no means mind-blowing but not god awful, either. The pad thai was merely okay; the fried rice was better. We did take out and they had it ready for us in 10 min, making it a good option if you need something quick. And I recall the bill being like just over $20 for two entrees and spring rolls (I don't even remember these so take your chances), which isn't bad. I walk the dog past here a lot and the place never seems that busy (though the steamy windows are inviting on a cold night). But Penny's stays open despite the existence of several other Thai places in this neighborhood so they must be doing something right. I was just hoping for a "hidden gem" that would be delicious, cheap and never too slammed. I guess I got two out of three?

Ok, I'm going to give Penny's the benefit of a doubt and give them 4 stars, although I think for the time being 3.5 stars would be more accurate. I don't eat out too much and certainly not thai food that tends to be very salty and to a lesser extent oily, but I ran 9 miles earlier in the day and I was ready to eat.

The menu is pretty decent, there are definitely a number of options and it is very reasonably priced. It's also 3 blocks from where I live. I called in my order- pad see euw with chicken and bbq pork noodle soup (a girl's gotta eat!). The girl who answered said 10-15 minutes. Awesome! I basically left my place a few minutes later and I walked in the shop and paid with my card and when Ianded back my receipt my food was in my hand. Yes it was that quick and for about $15.50.

The restuarant itself it a little scanty with maybe 10 tables. It is BYOB. Unfortunately there is a table sqeezed in right by the register. Fortunately the person sitting closest to the register wasn't there or else her face would have been in my ass while I was paying and picking up my food. Worst seat in the house.

My food was good. I have had better pad see euw, but I liked the bbq pork noodle soup a lot but it was a bit oily so I had some that night and then scraped off some of the oil the next day when I had leftovers and it separated in the fridge overnight. I like the fast service and there were other dishes I would try, but I probably will continue to do carry-out.

I have been here a number of times and tried many of their dishes. Some of the dishes like the traditional fried rice has been great, but then some of the rice noodle dishes have been subpar.

I feel as if this is a place I would continue to go to out of convenience. It would never be a destination for me.

I love penny noodle co! Their pad se eu is amazing, with unique, wide almost fluffy noodles in a decadent sweet sauce...I could almost consider it a dessert! The tom ka gai is also an excellent choice...tangy, sweet and creamy. The setting is small and a little cramped when they're busy but is rather quaint and well lit. The only complaint I would have is that their meat leaves a little something to desire, a bit dry and tough...but I justify it by saying I come there for the noodles and not the meat.

As luck would have it, I was nearby at lunch time. YES. I had a fiery shrimp and rice dish which was quite good. My friend had a spicy pork dish and was equally happy.

I love this place.
Clean, delivery is fast, menu is great. And very very cheap!!
Favorite is the spicy noodle with beef. And the tom kha soup is the best of any noodle place in lakeview. And the edamame is great.

Yes, this nice spot is about noodles, but it's got so much more going for it than simply noodles -- it's the way you can get all your taste buds handled no matter what you are craving, not to mention it's clean, it's cute, it's clever.

Considering the weather, we had the Thai iced tea and split an appetizer: the Vietnamese spring rolls actually went with the weather. Even though we were sort of limp, the veggies were crisp , the cilantro gave it a kick, and the sauce served with it was great -- not your standard mustard sauce.

There are so many options here; and they are smart to have quite a few vegetarian choices too; so if you want your noodles in a bowl or stir fried in a pan, or in a soup, Penny has you covered. Not to mention rice.

Today it was the battle of the Pad's: Thai vs. Se Eu. I loved the thin rice noodles mixed with scallions, peanuts, sprouts, and sweet red cabbage; had it with tofu. So good. The thicker noodle entree looked just as good, with a soy sauce that they should consider bottling. I didn't even get a taste: that should tell you something.

There didn't seem to be a bad noodle at Penny's; we had a nice lunch and I'm sure we'll be back.

I've been meaning to come here forever. I mean, come on, I love noodles. For some reason I thought this place was more like Noodles and Company but that is not the case. This place is mostly Asian-influenced which is fine by me just now what I expected. We ordered the crab rangoon to start which kind of tasted like a spring roll mixed with crab rangoon. I actually liked this since crab rangoon at most places is all cream cheese and makes me want to vomit.

I ordered the Thai Ravioli which was also not what I expected. There appeared to be shrimp shumai-like dumplings along with BBQ pork in a bowl with bean sprouts, lettuce, and peanuts. I expected there to be actual noodles but I enjoyed the combination. I also sampled the pad thai which was also pretty excellent. I don't think they use a lot of MSG in their dishes, I could barely tell and I normally get a wicked headache if I eat too much.

The portions are huge for the price and I ended up taking some of mine home. The menu was quite impressive but not overwhelming and there were a lot of spicy options which I like as well. The servers were all very nice and the food came out really quickly and piping hot. They serve beer and wine but I saw people bringing in beer from the liquor store next-door. We had an appetizer (5 pieces of crab rangoon) and two full meals for less than $22.00 with tax (before tip). This place is reasonable and will fill you up fast with great service and huge portions.

The Penny's Noodle Shop in Wicker Park, right off of the Damen stop of the Blue Line is one of my favorite places to eat!

My husband and I found Penny's on a Sunday night, because we go to church nearby. The cafe was pretty empty, although the delivery man was pretty busy. We checked out the menu prices and were pretty excited at the around $7 entree choices. I love to go to places where we can afford a full meal, instead of just the main course.

For appetizers, I got the Vietnamese spring rolls, which were delicious with their peanut sauce. They were cool and refreshing, and the raw vegetables and sticky rice wrap was offset with the sweet and nutty sauce. I like trying new things, and I loved this combination. They were also light enough to not fill me up before the main course.

My husband ordered their crab rangoon, which I liked, but he said that the cold-ish cream inside vs. the warm fried outside was not his taste. The sauce was tangy and good- I liked them because they were flaky and you could definitely taste the crab.

For the entree I got beef pad thai, arriving in a plate that was almost twice than I could eat, and was perfectly balanced between sweet and tang, with lots of beef and noodles and awesomeness. My husband got the miso soup, which he raved about afterwards.

The dinner-date for two came up to not much more than $20, which is perfect for us, because we're not exactly rolling in cash. When I returned with friends, I decreased the bill even more by sharing the pad thai (it's enough for two, definitely!) and just drinking water instead of getting a drink. Also, $7.50 for take-out, and not having to pay a tip is also a cheaper way to go, and you can share the delicious food on a park bench or at home.

Hands down this is the best location out of the three.
I've been going here for more than 5 years and it's still as good as I remember.
I do however wish they had private parking because like everything in Wriggly, it's always packed.
Too bad they are so small because I would like a little more space. My favorite soup hands down is the Tom Kha - Chicken Coconut soup. YUM!
Can't wait for some more!

When I try a new Thai restaurant, I usually get pad thai. I figure if they can't get that right, there's little hope for the rest. It's a good way to weed places out from the abundance of Thai spots in the city. So it went when I stopped at Penny's for the first time.

The pad thai was abysmal. It tasted scorched, somehow, and there was an enormous amount of cilantro mixed in. These two flavors (burn and cilantro) completely dominated the dish.

I won't be going back, despite the fact that it's on my way home from work.

Penny's is my favorite Asian restaurant in the area. It is unbelievably inexpensive, but has limitless vegetarian options. I have enjoyed eating at Penny's downtown and now here for almost 20 years.

I visit Penny's when I am in the mood for quick inexpensive food. The service historically been spotty, but with the prices of the menu something has to give. The atmosphere is ok too. I prefer the Lincoln park atmosphere the best. You can always find something to complain about with a restaurant or service...but, I choose to enjoy my dining experience and the curve balls that occasionally present.

Penny's is one of my neighborhood favorites for a tasty, inexpensive no thrills dinner. Back when I was a poor graduate student Penny's was about all I could afford, so back in the day it was my big night out. Recently I have been getting my feet wet in the Chicago fine dining scene, so it was kind of fun blast from the past this evening to take a break from upscale venues and make a return to Penny's.

Penny's does not offer much in terms of ambiance and the acoustics can be a little on the loud side, but the food is consistently good and is dirt cheap. For $34 (before tip) three of us enjoyed an appetizer and main course a piece. The food comes out fast and portions are generous, but the food is so good all three of us did not leave a morsel. Adding to the value Penny's is BYOB with no corkage fee; there is a liquor store (or packy as us Bostonians call it) across the street. Service is efficient, but the servers do not chat much beyond taking your order and do not exhibit much personality. During the few warm weather months Chicago offers, there is the option of al fresco dining.

In terms of recommendations, over the years of I have sampled several dishes but always end up wishing I ordered the Pad Thai when I try something different. The other entrees I have tried were all good, but the Pad Thai really stands out as their signature dish. It comes with your choice of beef, chicken or tofu as well as sprouts, green onions, cabbage, cilantro and some great noodles in a peanut sauce. There are two different hot sauces tableside so you can season it to your liking. For a first course my favorite is the Tom Yum soup; a spicy lemongrass based soup filled with mushrooms and a few shrimp.

If you are looking for haute cuisine, a romantic atmosphere or impeccable service you will not find it at Penny's but if you want good food at bargain basement prices you would be hard pressed to find a better venue.

Such a great concept in theory, with lots of menu items that sound great... but ho-hum in execution. If you're going to open a place where neither service nor atmosphere is a crutch, then you'd better be darn sure the food is spectacular.

Instead, it was all in all lacking in flavor or any homestyle taste and everything came out lukewarm-to-cold. This is no better than a mediocre fast-food-esque joint. Bleck.

It just hit me I should Yelp about Penny's, after years of it being on my go-to list. I'll admit I was late to the party. Long after my 1996 (uh, yeah, as a kid, right) move to Chicago, I thought this place was over-rated. I was wrong. Yes, me, I admit it, wrrrrrong. Luckily I learned the error of my ways before we moved from Lakeview, but even now, I request a return several times a year. I especially enjoy meeting my husband after work on busy Friday's for a rendezvous on the patio in the summer. He picks out a bottle of wine for the no-corkage BYOB, and the staff is always prompt with glasses and a corkscrew, and an ice bucket the one time he brought a white. Tonight we ate indoors and it was still a treat.

Their Pad See Ewe, always with chicken for me, is my by far my favorite version ever, and my #1 Thai dish in town. I love the charred, caramelized flavors they achieve, and the hot sauce on the table adds acidity and cuts the sweetness for a perfect balance. We always start with the Vietnamese spring rolls, which are very fresh, never with that chewy spring roll skin delivered by places that wrap them too far in advance. So these are my top-two orders, but at various times we have also enjoyed the seaweed salad, pad Thai, beef and basil salad, stir-fried greens, red curry, beef noodle soup, chicken satay, and various others. Given that we can watch and listen to the cooks preparing the meal, the made-to-order and from-scratch credibility is without reproach. We tend to order an appetizer and two entrees, and with a 20-25% tip, the bill is rarely more than $25...or 2500 pennies.

HUGE FAN!

I love the simplicity of the food but has a lot of spice and flavor to it. The veggie sides are also delicious and a great idea.

Most of all I love this particular location of Penny's because it feels like I'm in an authentic noodle joint, in asia. I hear the woks frying, the TV screen, the employees eating noodles at the counter, bright lights.

I feel so comfortable, eating my noodles while reading my book there.

Not so much a fan of the Penny's in Wicker Park. Food is the same, so I usually order for takeout there.

This is always my go to Thai place when taking out....everything always tastes the same and yes it's a chain and yes people say it's commercial and if Pennys is the McDonald's of Thai places I'm a fan.

It's very inexpensive. and the flavor is right. I can't lie I do change a few ingredients around because I'm "THAT GUY" but all in all pretty decent.

Shrimp Pad Thai
Thai Fried Rice Chicken
Crab Ragoon

The Thai Fried rice is the best I've ever had, and I've craved it ever since the first day I tried it. Two days later, I made my husband pick up a takeout order from another location of Penny's near O'Hare (where he was) just so we could have it for dinner that night. PHENOM! Spicy (drunk) noodles, as well as shrimp dumplings were great, too. And if you like cabbage, their side of sauteed cabbage is delicious and well worth the $3-4 for the amount they pack in.

My only complaint is that it's so not conveinent to any of my stomping grounds really. Oh, how I would love for one to open near us! We found Penny's walking from the train to Wrigley Field to see the Paul McCartney concert this summer (yeah, I had to get that in). It was a welcome mirage on that very hot and very busy day, with the only table available (inside) being the little two seater beckoning us to get in out of the horrid heat of Chicago in the summer.

Also, I feel like I'm cheating on Lovely Thai, but there's room for both of these two to co-exist, right? :)

I survived on Penny's this past year. It's delicious. It's cheap. They serve large portions that can be split into multiple meals (ideal for broke twenty-somethings like myself). The food always comes out quickly and they have never messed up my order, which is really saying something because I come here quite often. Oh, and their hot sauce is amazing.

Penny's is great for a quick date night, filling lunch or satisfying snack while laying on your living room floor terribly hungover (not that I know from experience). Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

It's always nice when a restaurant gives you more utensils with your order than the # of people who are about to consume it. Because what couple doesn't need to feel like they just ordered enough food to feed a family of four?

Penny's isn't a perfect noodle shop; a few menu items are real clunkers, and the tomatoes that are in various stir fry items are not really my thing.

Still, I have found in the past couple years residing in Lincoln Park that I really couldn't live without Penny's. The hot pepper noodle, with broad noodles, sauteed onions and spicy chili sauce. The spicy basil noodle, in broth with thin vermicelli noodles and spicy carrot slaw. The thai fried rice, perhaps the best fried rice I have yet eaten, swimming with fresh thai basil and always more spicy goodness.

And for a mere $22, they will deliver two entrees and an appetizer to my house, quote me at 45 minutes, and show up in 20. Unbeatable.

Not having liked the Penny's location in Wicker Park, I was skeptical. But this Penny's is in a cute little space, with an old-fashioned diner counter and a nice chandelier. It made the visit more intimate and enjoyable.

My Spicy Basil was okay, nothing eye-opening. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of vermicelli noodles so I probably should have ordered something different. The Thai Ravioli looked good, and I would like to someday try the Tom Kha Kai soup.

We received lots of attention from the staff, which did not go unnoticed. Our server was also very attentive of us. I could see returning here if I were in the neighborhood, the space is really cute and comfortable.

I've been to Penny's a few times and every dish I've tried has been tasty and a good size portion.

It's a small place on the corner under the train. I've been there for lunch and dinner and never seen it packed, but I bet it could fill up pretty quick.

The bbq pork is really good. I think my favorite dish is the thai ravioli, but all of the soups are really good too. The soup bowls are all huge, much more food than one normal human should be able to eat in a sitting. The entrees aren't quite as big, they are a good size.

Service is always good, friendly, and attentive. They are always able to answer any of my stupid questions, and I normally have a fair amount of stupid questions.

I wish Penny's was a little closer to my place. When it's really cold out (which is when I really want a ginormous bowl of soup) it's just too far to walk for me. It's always worth it though.

Penny's is like that not-bad-but-not-right-for-you boyfriend you keep going back to. He doesn't cheat or disrespect you, he's a nice guy, but he's just...meh. After you break up with him, you start glorifying his good traits, but when you get back together, you're disappointed that he doesn't live up to your rose-colored memories.

I keep going back to Penny's, and I don't know why. I keep thinking each time will be better than the last, but it never is. It's not BAD food, but it's kind of bland, without a lot of bold flavors. I ordered the egg noodles with BBQ pork the other day, and I had to dump some soup in it to give it some salt and flavor. I know times are tough right now, but can't you spare some spices and salt?

I was so disappointed with the food here. I had the spring rolls and the Basil Chicken and they were not good. I couldn't finish either one. Both were so bland. The Basil Chicken just had a little chicken, a few big basil leaves, and a crap load of shredded carrots. It was kind of in a noddle soup mixture. If you like plain, tasteless noodles in broth, then this dish is right up your alley. Order away.
The 2nd star is because the service is excellent. Friendly and fast, however, does not make up for less than mediocre food. People rave about this place and I don't know why. Maybe I ordered the wrong items or maybe they are blinded from the cheap price. Here, you get less than what you pay for. They should pay you for eating their food.

I had very high expectations from this place after hearing about it for years and never making it over...

last night decided to check it out with friends and really was disappointed with the experience. I was going to give it 2-stars but the staff was nice and they earned the 3rd through that.

I can see how several people have written that they never tried Thai food and thought this place was great - just a quick note - this place is NOT Thai food, it's Pan-Asian and their few Thai dishes aren't made very well!

They didn't even have green curry or pad khi mao - how can you be a Thai restaurant and not serve those dishes! That's like saying I'm a Mexican restaurant but don't serve enchiladas or quesadillas...

Anyhow, we ordered their crispy rolls - which were way too oily; their pad thai was neither sweet nor spicy and just floating in a layer of oil on the plate; their half-decent dish was the vegetarian noodle soup, which we didn't mind as much.

I don't think I'm going back here per say (I did come up from the Loop the first time to try it) but if I'm in the area I wouldn't advocate against it either..

One big advantage - they are very vegetarian friendly, down to their sauces and broths!!

Dear Penny's,

I used to live 2 blocks away, just down the alley from you, under the El tracks, back where the people dug through our garbage cans right outside our basement window. Then I decided to move to DC to go to grad school, boo me. Little do you know that my beau and I ALWAYS bring you up in conversation, and I count the numerous ways that your Hot Pepper Noodle made my life better from 2003-2006.

Alas, I have good news! I am moving back next spring! We were just discussing today that we would have our first celebratory dinner under your roof. I can't wait to once again order the Thai Spring Rolls (so tasty) and he, of course, will order the Thai Ravioli (do you still serve it in that cool red bowl?)

Until we meet again, we will be fondly thinking of you and remembering days gone by!

P.S. - The Pad Se Eu is a close second. No one's rice noodles are as wide and fat as yours!

I returned for my second visit less than a week after my first. Once again the order was for take out, but there were two differences to note that warranted a review update. First, in addition to the Pad Se Eu and Thai Fried Rice that we ordered last week, we ordered Crispy Rolls and Crab Rangoon. The second (and more important) difference is that I picked up our order and drove it to my boyfriend's apartment in all the way in Pilsen.

With a 20 minute drive post pickup, I figured my best bet to avoid cold food would be to be there the second the order was bagged. Naturally, I'd forgotten the minor league game going on at Wrigley and traffic put me about 10 minutes later than the order estimate. I hauled ass and arrived in 15 minutes, and by the time I parked and we situated on the couch with food and drink I'd imagine this food had been in containers for 30-40 minutes.

I knew my rice wouldn't be too bad, but I wasn't expecting much when I reached for the crispy roll. Much to our surprise they were pretty damn crunchy! Obviously they weren't fresh out of the fryer crispy, but they were what I would have figured to be if we had taken them a far shorter distance. The Crab Rangoon wasn't as shockingly crunchy as the crispy rolls, but they held their freshness just as well. The Pad Se Eu and Thai Fried Rice were delicious as delicious as the week before and did not need to be reheated. Having ordered appetizers, I ended up only eating half of my dish and I can attest it reheats to a great lunch. Well done Penny's. Well done.

Good noodle bowls in Chicago...who da thunk it?

Penny's made the Top 10 list for Chicago's Best Cheap Eats on http://Citysearch.com, and I can see why. For what it is, it rocks. It's a compact space in a restored triangular corner building in Wrigleyville. The combination of the open space and warm blond wood makes it seem bigger than it is because there are maybe 2-3 tables that can accommodate more than two people each.

The robust menu veers more toward Thai and some Vietnamese, but what struck closest to my heart were the noodle bowls. I'm on a worldwide quest for quality ramen and saimin noodles. If Penny had saimin, I would have switched teams and done a nasty horizontal tango with her. But alas, a confusing identity crisis was averted, and instead, I had the Barbecue Pork Noodle Bowl, bargain ramen for just $4.95 (see photo).

They were definitely most generous with the pork slices, and the noodles were nice and chewy. The broth was a tad too salty to praise, but what a treat on a brisk morning just a stroll away from my hotel. And compound that with constantly refilled $1.50 Diet Cokes, I was indeed a happy camper.

FOOD - 4 stars...surprisingly hearty and cheap ramen bowls in Chi-town
AMBIANCE - 4 stars...and in a nice, clean setting to boot
SERVICE - 4 stars...fast and efficient if not necessarily all that sociable
TOTAL - 4 stars...I'd walk a mile for good Asian noodles

Penny's came highly recommended by a former Chicago native, and I was highly disappointed. Despite what the other reviewers say, it is neither a Thai, Chinese, Japanese place. It is simply an Asian noodle house that serves all three varieties.

I like the atmosphere, however. The al fresco dining was a few feet from the Red Line, and across a bar in Wrigleyville. There must have been at least 10 tables outside, and 10 inside. If the weather is good, definitely opt to sit outside, even when the Red Line rumbles in the midst of your conversation. Inside is just too stuffy and hot.

We had the pad thai, which I thought was sweet and weak. The husband liked it. It had a serving of bean sprouts as big as the portion of pad thai. I know bean sprouts are cheap, but come on.

The chicken satay was swallowed by our nephew, but not so the bbq pork noodles (dry). I liked the noodles OK, and the pork is acceptable. A friend had the udon, which I thought was overcooked but edible. The broth, however, wasn't my cup of tea. Too fishy. As I wasn't feeling well, I went with the dry tofu and bean sprouts vegetarian meal and a bowl of rice. The soy sauce was overindulgent, as they are in a lot of these quasi-Asian places. I couldn't stomach it.

My pet peeve lies in the teapot that held our hot green tea. It obviously has never been scrubbed too well, as I can still scratch the tannin around the rim.

The only good thing going for it is the price. The cheapest meal I ever found in Chi-town yet. I guess you get what you pay for.

Space is tight, and we had 5 in our group. There was barely enough room on our one table to hold every dish. But we survived the lack of real estate.

Penny's has THE WORST thai food I have ever eaten. The chicken pad thai was disgusting. The noodles were soaked with soy sauce and did not taste like pad thai. My friend had the ramen soup with beef and that was a joke. It was so much worse than ramen you get for 10 cents at Walgreens.

I feel bad for anyone that eats at Penny's. It is the grossest fake thai food. It is NOT even Asian food.. I don't even know why that place is still in business. If you want good thai food, go to JOY'S on Broadway.

The servers were not any better. Once my friend told the waitress that she did not like the ramen, the waitress did not even offer to replace it or apologize for the food. She just took it away and then you could tell she was bad-mouthing us to her co-workers. Very bad service.

Very disappointing.

Penny's on Roscoe is my once-a-week treat. It's where I first had Thai food, and to this day I still order the Japanese Gyoza and Chicken Pad Thai. I will try everything else though--I just do it through other people. I've brought all of my friends and family here, and if Penny's could get my picky family from the suburbs (read: white-bread, chain restaurants) to WANT to drive into the city for some Pad Se Eu, then I think it's a pretty darn good place to eat.

I live 2 blocks away and usually order for pickup, and it's practically always ready by the time I put on my shoes and get down there. The staff is great, especially because they know me by sight at least, and often are reaching for my bag just as I'm walking in the door.

Anytime someone wants to go, I'm totally there.
