Great versatile hangout
In warmer weather you have options at this bar. You can sit in the main area, go to the tiki bar in the back, or hang out on the patio by the tiki bar. The atmosphere changes throughout but is overall a relaxed night out atmosphere.
They run a lot of specials including: $2 tecate and either $1-$2 tacos. The tacos are good but one thing that makes getting the tacos here awesome is the HUGE variety of different sauces. They have 10+ different sauces available at varying heat and flavors which are great on the tortilla chips and the tacos.
The food is good, not great. The serving sizes are not as big as you would think they would be for the prices. You have to buy chips and salsa. This place is good for hanging out, but I would never choose it if I were just in the mood for Mexican food and wasn't trying to hang out with a group of people.
Review Source:3.5 stars. Tacos are good, hot sauces are fun, but the whole affair could be a little more affordable.
This is definitely a solid taco joint (I've never tried their  burgers so I can't really say much about them) and I'm never hungry after my taco basket and knock back a margarita, but I just have a small hangup about paying more than 5 bucks for tacos in a plastic basket. It's the principle of the thing.
That being said, this is my #2 favorite place for tacos in Indianapolis. I wish the margaritas were a little stronger but they're very delicious so I don't mind having a few to get my buzz on.
It's definitely a good place to go with friends or on a date - lots of couples and younger groups fill up the place on weekends. Weeknights are a little more subdued, which is actually kind of nice once in a while.
Overall a solid restaurant and definitely a place everyone should try, at the very least to experience bright pink hot sauce.
I've been here several times and I really love the atmosphere. The food has always been a little less than desirable except for the chips and guacamole...it's fabulous. I should note that I've only had the veggie tacos, so the other dishes could be fantabulous. The veggie tacos just seem bland and I find myself soaking them in hot sauce just to enjoy them. FYI, the hot sauces are great!
Lets put it this way, this place is cool and has a good beer selection. Definitely stop in and try it, but maybe avoid the veggie tacos.
As a big fan of Radio Radio for years, I was VERY excited to hear that the owners were opening this new restaurant, "Revolucion".
My wife and I arrived about 7:30 and it was slow, as perhaps expected on a Tuesday night. It was easy to find a seat, and it was nice to have space between tables so we could stretch out and sit comfortably, while also not being in other peoples conversations. Â Clearly if this place takes off, they will be able to increase seating and not have to expand the restaurant footprint.
We were not sure what to expect on the menu as the theme is clearly Mexican with the bright colorful murals, sombreros and mask lining the walls. Â There was some kitchiness to it, kind of canned, but there was an effort to include unique, funky, more authentic art to give the restaurant the Fountain Square hip look and feel it deserves and clientele expect.
And surprised we were. Surprised that the menu was so limited. Â Maybe the menu will expand as the clientele request variety. Given that they have over 80 varieties of Tequila, I'd hope for more than a 10 item menu.
But, lets talk about what we did eat. Â My wife insisted on ordering the spicy potato appetizer so that she could compare it to the same dish she ate in Barcelona, and has searched for in vane for many years since. Â Revolucion did not disappoint; the potatoes were crisp, hot and covered in the wonderful brown, light and spicy sauce. Â A search now concluded as the best ever appetizer has been found outside of Spain.
For dinner my wife had the Shrimp Taco's which she found very flavorful and of which I could not be denied a bite (or two, they were good). Â There was no piling on toppings and extras, thus the light, fresh spiced shrimp was easily enjoyed.
I went with the traditional burger (cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion) on  a bun. I really wanted something lighter, but it wasn't an option with the menu.  The burger was on a bun that didn't do the rest of the sandwich justice.  The bacon was wonderful, plentiful, thick slice, and meaty, it made my eyes smile when I saw it hanging out the sides of the bun.  The burger itself was a thick 1/2 pound of very tasty beef, yet, I would have liked it to come out a bit juicer and less well done.  The fries that come with the burger are enough for two to share, and I like that they don't salt the fries and let the customer manage salting to their taste.
Overall, we will be back. Â In that time I hope that they include additional food items on the menu, add additional NON-Alcoholic drinks to the restaurant.
As other have stated, this place is great. Â The decoration and overall ambiance is excellent. Â Tasty margaritas and homemade sauces for their tacos. Â The only thing that makes this a 4 star review and not a 5 is not being able to mix and match the taco types. Â Great place to eat dinner and have some drinks before a show at Radio Radio or White Rabbit. Â Good work, La Rev!
Review Source:I wish I could give 2.5 stars because I honestly am right in the middle on this place, but went with 2 because of the food.
I like this place for a drink before/after dinner or a show. They have a good selection of beers on tap and in bottles and their margaritas are pretty tasty.
The downside, is their food. I like tacos...no, I love tacos, but I was under-impressed with their offerings. They were good, not great, but they were overpriced considering they were ala carte. Chips and salsa was even expensive. Going here for a meal would be costly and not worth the bill in my opinion, but if you just wanted a taco or two, it might work out.
There are too many other good mexican restaurants to keep coming back here for dinner. For me, this place is all about the drinks.
When I walked into this place, I felt like I warped to a small bar located in the Mexican countryside. Festive skulls painted on the walls, alongside other extravagant paintings, the décor was unbelievable. The bar is very open and there are plenty of tables for sitting. We drank $1 tequila shots and $2.50 PBRs. It was a good deal for a weekday evening. I believe they change their specials up, so it could vary from day-to-day. I really enjoyed the time I spent here and would very much like to go back sometime, preferably on a weekend, and when their signature Revolution lager is in stock, as it is advertised for only $1, which is great. Much to my disappointment, they were out when we went, but I guess you win some and you lose some. Hopefully I'll return soon enough to try their cerveza barata!
Review Source:I never expected to crave the understated and simple tacos from Revolucion. Â But, boy, do they wake up your mouth and leave you wanting more! Â These tacos (2 per order) are packed with spicy seasoned meat (my favorite is the chicken), and come unexpectedly unadorned. Â No heaping mounds of salsa and cheese atop these babies. Â On your first visit, that might disappoint you, because it may not be what you're used to - but take a bite of that taco BEFORE slathering it with the variety of green and red, mild and unforgivably HOT salsas that they have....you'll find that the meat is seasoned SO well, and perfectly wrapped with two soft corn tortillas (yes, TWO - with delish cheese stuffed between them!!).
This is how *I* eat the tacos at Revolucion - pretty plain. Â With MAYBE a dip or two in their tomatillo (sp?) salsa. Â So yummy...
I'm craving that today.
I really loved the atmosphere in this place. Â They have a great front bar that is very warm and comfortable. Â In the back there is a tiki bar with a very nice deck that provides a great atmosphere. Â I think this place is a great addition to fountain square.
I did not eat there, but all of the food looked very good and was inexpensive.
I really like the fact that they have a nice selection of micro brews from all over the country and also cheap PBR and Miller High Lifes. Â It is a great place to relax after work. Â
I gave it five stars because this place is the total package!
You got to love a place that prides itself of its liquor and then has some great food on the side. They added some burgers to the menu as well as the tacos and so far its all been good. Stop in for a drink, stay for a little food, and then grab another drink. Great selection of on tab beverages that you may not find anywhere else.
Review Source:If your expectations are in the right place than this place is awesome. Â Don't expect more than decent cheap beer and solid tacos. Â But what they do...they do very well! Â The tacos are seriously delish and fairly authentic. Â Don't forget to ask for the caddy of house made hot sauces. Â The vibe of this place is great....laid back yet fun. Â I would definitely categorized this as a hipster joint but not a snobby one. Â The best part about this place is that is ridiculously cheap. Â $1 draft beers (mystery light beer but who cares!) and $6 for 2 decent sized tacos....you can't beat that. Â I will definitely be back to this place...often.
Review Source:This place is a good time. Â Now, with an expanded tiki bar/back patio, it's even more of a good time. Â Definitely digging the new furniture (not just picnic tables anymore, folks) and the tacos are as yummy as ever. Â Gotta love that pink watermelon salsa - pairs well with the shrimp tacos. Â I always get them - I know, I must be boring because I always get the same thing but they're just that good.
Random comment: Â I really like the decor of the women's restroom. Â The texture of the silver paint on the walls is super fun and the chandelier is over the top - I mean, who puts a chandelier in a bathroom? Â Revolucion does, and it is amazing.
Big fan of this place. Â They will be seeing my mug again soon...
I'm trying to decide how I feel about this place, and I suppose I wish I had a more nuanced star system wherein I could give half-stars. It's not quite 4-stars in my mind, but it's also above par. I think I'm going to settle on a 3-star, because the "A-OK" in my mind means more than simply saying, "It was okay," but instead giving a relatively emphatic thumb up while saying, "It was A-OK."
That's about right. It's a good atmosphere, they have a decent bourbon selection along with their beers and tequila, and the pork tacos were fantastic with the cilantro and a good squeeze of lime. The corn tortillas weren't quite formidable enough to contain their insides, but that may be simply not knowing the power that exists in these meat hooks of mine.
What really disappointed me, and killed the possible 4-star rating were their "frites." Calling French fries "frites" implies a certain level of potato artistry is involved in their preparation. What came to the table were just standard frozen French fries, seemingly of the Ore-Ida variety. Ore-Ida is the Thomas Kinkade of potato artistry. When you are expecting Dali, and you get Kinkade, the establishment loses a star.
Anyway. I doused the fries in ketchup, rounded an Elijah Craig, and Bob's your uncle. Down the hatch with 3-stars and the possibility of an updated review in the future with another star now that I know what to steer clear of on the menu.
I am a fan.
Wait, I am more than a fan. I am in awe of the awesomeness that is Revolucion.
It's like Nacho Libre meets a street food taco stand meets a full bar meets your senses and it's a fantastic experience. Â
Best parts:
1. Exposed rafters in the roof. Mexican art all around. Nice touch that keeps the place authentic and real.
2. Full bar. We're talking my dream of tequila options, your import and domestic bottle beers, and a nice spread of craft beers on tap.
3. Fresh Mexican tacos. Not tex-mex.
4. Homemade salsa and a wide array of hot sauces to add for flavor and zest.
5. An elusive tiki bar that I haven't been to yet but which the idea of makes me an extremely excited toucan. Or whatever.
6. Beautiful, colorful, Mexican-themed paintings made by local artists. I mean, I would love a house full of this kind of art.
7. Space. Lots of it! The floor plan is nice and open, accommodating large parties easily, as well as lots of small tables. Looks like they could even fit a mariachi band in one corner no problem.
Basically, you can't go wrong at Revolucion. It's the last place in Indianapolis I'm planning to eat before moving, and that says something.
Let's start with what this place does well:
1) Food: The menu is simple... and when you have a simple, short menu, you better do it pretty damn well... and they do. The tacos are simple, affordable, and delicious.
2) Friendliness: You'll see a lot of the same bar staff here as you will at Radio Radio... same folks... and they've always been very fast and very friendly. When we got our food here, the cook even brought out a bunch of homemade hot sauces for us to try... and when we said that we loved spicy things, he went back and got even spicier stuff... and he gave us some free chips to sample all of them. Very friendly and helpful.
3) Atmosphere, this place has a great feel to it. The right amount of antique combined with the right amount of modern.
Now, the limited amount of things that could be improved:
1) Seating: I'd never been here before, so a sign that says 'Seat yourself' would have been handy.
2) Wait staff: Except for the little type face on the little menu at the table that says to 'Order at the Bar'...there is no indication that there is no wait staff.
Minor details, but I prefer not to show up to a restaurant and wonder about the logistics.
All in all, a great place to grab a quick bite to eat, especially if time is of the essence and you're catching a show afterwards in Fountain Square.
Given that Revolucion does have some of the best tacos in the city, only 3 stars because they always seem to be out of almost everything every time i go in here. the veggie tacos are good but i would like to try something different. please please please prep more food for a later crowd!
Must try anything with the Pink Meany taco sauce and wash it down with a spicy margarita.
Whether it's the Pink Meany taco sauce or the spicy margaritas that incise you, this non-smoking cantina is a perfect spot for some great local eats. Â When it's warm outside, make sure you sneak back to the tiki bar that serves tasty drinks and local beers.
My personal favorites: for starters, guacamole and chips, main dish the fish tacos with the mango salsa. Â Delicious!
Went on a Thursday night.
Decor: Edgy, laid back, perfect place to kick back and enjoy dinner and drinks at the bar.
Food: Chicken tacos were perfect, hot, plenty of food, fresh.
Guacamole, fresh and tasty. Tried three salsas with chips (red, green, pink) and all were outstanding.
Favorite was the spicy rim margarita. The name made me hesitant but glad I went for it. One of best and perfect compliment to tacos.
My friend had the beer and was impressed with selection on tap.
Staff were friendly and food arrived promptly.
Definitely on list as a go to for future.
Don't expect fancy but if fun is what you are wanting or a great place to hang for a drink with friends this is it.
This weird restaurant bar has it going on. A small, simple, delicious menu allows for a greater amount of focus to be spent on making a few foods excellently instead of many foods with medicority, which is an idea some other indianapolis restaurants might want to get in on.
Before we went my boyfriend and i did that 'hey, wanna try bites of each others tacos?' thing where we think we'll get two different things and then try each others. I got shrimp, he got chicken and our buddy got pulled pork. I asked my boyfriend if he wanted a bite of mine and he sort of pulled back and said 'no, i mean, obviously we're going to be coming back, so we can just try a different type next time'.
Dude loved his chicken taco. And I loved my shrimp taco! I hear the pulled pork tacos were also pretty magnificent. The chips and guacamole were delicious, but for the price I would like a little more guacamole. The spicy rim margarita really hit the spot and was a great accompaniment to the tacos and, at $5.50, i think they were reasonably priced. (I had 5) but what I don't like to see with any margarita is a bartender pulling out a jigger and measuring precisely two jiggers of booze. For that, you get four stars, revolucion. live a little! get me greased up, liquored up, super slick and oil my gears!
The fried potatoes were pretty 'meh', but the 'pink death' hot sauce was killer. I think it removed a layer of my tongue while still managing to be flavorful, so that was pretty stellar. So now in a Rocky Dennis fashion, I will break down for you the 'Things that I love'
Things That I loved: (the sun on my face)
-affordability
-deliciousness
-freshness
-an atmosphere where you go, eat your taco and then sit around for a few hours drinkng because it's just a chill place to be.
Things That I Didn't love: (the sun on my face)
-Not being a bit loose with the tequila
-mediocre taters
having to wait in line every time i wanted to order another margarita. Like I said, I drank 5 and a daquiri. Every additional margarita meant me waiting in line to order it. That's not so awesome.
-THEY WOULD NOT MAKE A MOJITO! get out of here with that!
But we will definitely be frquenting!
Great atmosphere. Â Great music. Â Great service. Â Great draft selection. Great people... and the food is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Â
Delicious margaritas, fresh authentic tacos the way they were meant to be made. Â
We were given a taste of the homemade habanero infused tequila - whoa! Â
If you haven't been you must go check out! Â Go early if you want a good seat to see the Danny Thompson Trio. Â
Thanks Tufty & his team for continuing to add class to Fountain Square. This is definitely a new favorite of mine.
Much bigger than I expected, but also very spacious -- lots and lots of room between the tables. Â The tiki bar was closed for the season or for the night, but the place had a nice steady crowd for a Tuesday evening, and it got busier the later we stayed.
The margaritas were good, the tacos were OK, but the guacamole is fantastic, and so are the chips that go with it. Â I would seriously become a regular here just for the guacamole.
It's an order/pay at the counter place, and by the time we left, it was a challenge to get someone's attention to pay. Â But in general the waitstaff was pretty friendly.
I don't really understand what they hype on here is all about?!?!
I ordered the carne asada tacos, which were ok.
How can you call yourself a Mexican restaurant and force people to buy them in pairs for $7??? Â I'm sorry, but I've had way better tacos at only $1.50 a piece that had more flavor to them. Â No true Mexican restaurant has ever required me to purchase them in pairs.
The main reason for my trip here was to try Fountain Square Breweries' beer which was actually not bad. Nothing too spectacular about their beer, though I understand they are fairly new.
I love that this is essentially two bars in one. Â Inside is the luchadore's dream with tacos, margaritas and tons of craft beer options on tap. Â Out back is the tiki hut with kebabs, drinks with umbrellas and lots of kitschy designs. Â The bartenders are awesome and so are the waitstaff. Â They quickly bring out the tasty tacos (try the shrimp or the black bean) and orders of piping hot chips and cooling guac!
I like to enjoy a couple of tacos inside with a frosty local brew and then hit the tiki hut afterward with a fruity cocktail. Â The best of both worlds!
INCREDIBLE! I've been hearing about this place for months and anticipating the day when the paper would be removed from the windows and welcome us. What a great place! Staff is terrific, the food is fabulous, and the atmosphere is equally great. I tried the fish taco and veggie taco and found them both to be tasty. However, if you want a flavor explosion in your mouth order the veggie taco! A favorite! Yum! Mango salsa. Everything is absolutely fresh and made daily. House made chipotle salsa will knock your socks off!
I'm going here weekly!
Oh, and there is a tiki bar out back! A night to be savored under the stars, decorative lamps, and tunes. It feels like you are in another world. They'll lend you musical instruments if you'd prefer to make your own music.
They have a great selection of beer on tap, several local brews too.
So glad the Rev is in the neighborhood.
Wonderful decor, friendly staff, tasty reasonably-priced food and craft beer - this is a gem set among the many jewels in the Fountain Square district of Indy.
It was early when we arrived, and there was still plenty of bar and table/chair seating available.
The decor is like.. well.. hmm.. its like an upscale Mexican cantina if a lot of wonderful independent artists got together to help decorate it, which is actually what happened in the case of the gorgeous paintings that take over much of the wall space. Â The bartender told us who did them, I'm ashamed that I was way too into my Mad Hatter IPA to remember.
The beer is good - they have a selection from the basics to around 3 craft beers on tap with a few in bottles. Â Jon C. had Robert the Bruce, I had the aforementioned Mad Hatter IPA.
The staff, well, I was totally at home. Â One of the women had a blonde mohawk, all of them had nice ink - and the kitchen staff was joking back and forth with the front of house. Â NIce to hear staff all getting along for a change ;)
We ordered the chips with .. one of each salsa because we *can't* not try them all. Â The verde was very good - the regular red was quite good but my love is the chipotle and...
Pink Death.
Yes I did go there and I did get it and Oh. My. Goodness is it tasty.
Far from being a macho (no offense, I call them how I see them!) heat bomb - it's this deceptively sweet spicy vinegary mix that's absolutely incredible on chips. Â
Even more incredible on the carne asada tacos. Â I'd had my fill of corn, so I dumped Pink Death and chipotle salsa on the tacos and just ate out the filling with a fork. Â The carne asada was in-cred-ibly tasty.
As is usual with us, we asked the staff about interesting places to go next - and got some great recommendations for our next trip to Indy ;)
If you like good Mexican food at reasonable prices, good craft beer, good bottle beer, great and friendly and interesting service - all served up in probably the most gorgeous place I've been into for a long time, this is your new home. =) Â
(and get the Pink Death sauce when you go. You'll thank me ;) )
I love this place. I could eat here every single night. The shrimp tacos and the veggie tacos are definitely the way to go. The shrimp is seasoned perfectly, juicy, and never overcooked. The veggie tacos are usually my pick partly because they are delicious and partly because they are twice the size of all the other tacos. When you eat these- goodies are going to fall out. They are overflowing with greatness.
The beef tacos hold a solid third for me. They are always cooked and seasoned very well.
I've had the fish taco a few times. These can be hit or miss. If the fish is cooked properly they are great- almost as good as the shrimp- but occasionally the fish arrives overcooked. I will rank them fourth.
I've only had the pulled pork tacos once, but they were a bit dry. I still haven't worked up the muster to revisit them, and I still haven't tried the pulled chicken tacos. Pulled chicken just never sounds good.
The chips, salsa, and guacamole are all phenomenal. I was surprised at how hot the hot salsa was. Well done. Nice and smokey as well. The other apps a somewhat underwhelming. The sausage rolls are good, but I think the Red Lion down the street does a better job.
I have yet to try a burger- though they look incredible. Maybe when the weather cools down a bit.
The decor is alone is worth a trip: lucha libre, Dia de los Muertos, dark-stained woods against brightly colored paintings and masks. The bar itself is one of the most beautiful I've seen.
The music is also another bonus. The last time I was here I heard almost all of Combat Rock.
As you might suspect the bar is large and has an impressive tequila collection. Then there is the beer.- There are always several Indiana micros on tap. Sun King, Flat 12, 3 Floyds, and Upland are almost always available. They also have a beer that I love, but had never seen on tap until I walked into this bar: Domain Dupage from Two Brothers Brewing. It's a "French Country Ale" (whatever that means). It has a light body and a toasty malt flavor. It goes very well with the tacos on a hot summer day. If you aren't ordering your favorite Indiana micro I highly recommend it.
My only complaint is that the kitchen isn't open late enough. It closes at 10 on weeknights and 11 on weekends.
I feel extremely mixed about this place. Â Indy needed a taco/beer bar but I feel very strongly that Revolucion is only scratching the surface of what it could be.
Let's be frank - these tacos are not anywhere near as good as the ones you would get at any decent Taqueria in Indy. Â I have been here twice and I have had the shrimp, pork, carne asada, and fish tacos. Â They are all fine but incomplete in my opinion. Â The perfect gringo pork taco would come with avocado crema, cilantro, pickled onions, and a little crumbled queso. Â All of the tacos at Revolucion are essentially just meat, cheese, a cup of salsa, and a sprig of cilantro. Â They aren't bad, they're just boring. Â For $3-$3.50 a taco I expect a little bit more.
As for the chips, salsa, and guac - they're good, but $3.95 for chips and salsa and $5.95 for a scant amount of guac and a basket of chips - Yowsa. Â I've seen avocado prices in grocery stores these days so I realize you have to take out a second mortgage to buy the lovely things, but damn folks.
The beer menu is solid with nice crafts complementing a range of Mexican brews - although a $3 can of Tecate doesn't seem like a special worth advertising (even though I love cans of Tecate). Â I had high hopes for the margarita. Â There is a large container with a spicket where they keep the margarita mix. Â This container led me to believe that it contained simply lime juice and either simple syrup or agave. Â I'm almost positive it was a mix - it had that aftertaste that screams sour mix, darn! Â And while I'm on the topic of cutting corners - even though I would never expect them to make their own tortillas, the reviews that suggest that these are housemade tortillas are ludicrous. Â Go to Oaxaca Restaurante if you want a housemade tortilla. Â
Parting suggestion - hire a Mexican cook and put chorizo tacos on the menu!
I came back for shrimp tacos. After some inquiry, I was introduced to the pink death sauce, and my night was made. Revolucion exceeded my expectations on a hot sauce. You have to ask for it though, otherwise hot sauce is not offered to you, even when it isn't busy. I could eat about 20 shrimp tacos here with chipotle and pink death sauces mixed on them. So extremely fantastic. Marinated perfectly with a beautiful smattering of cheese in between the tortillas on these babies.
I'm getting hungry just thinking about this. Please go to Revolucion as fast as you can.
Sometimes everything you hear about a place is true. Â This was the case when it came to Revolucion.
The atmosphere - festive and laid back.
The mixed drinks - strong and tasty.
The beer selection - varied with a local presence.
The bartenders - friendly and efficient.
And the food - freaking fantastic and nicely priced! Â My chicken tacos ruled the world. Â
I can't wait to go back!
I hate Mexican food. Typically.
My wife dragged me here on a rare, kid-free night. I stuffed myself on tacos and Wee-Mac, chatted up friendly bartenders/waitstaff, and had a great time.
I could not get enough of the tacos. I loved the pork ones, and just kept eating and eating. Awesome stuff.
And I ate the salsa. Seriously, it's like crack. It's the best salsa ever. I've never had anything like it. I tried the chipolte salsa, too. It was melt-your-face off spicy, if you're into that sort of thing.
My review is only but a work in progress as, despite having been here twice, I still have not tried the food. Â I love this place so I will be back to sample more. Â I can't wait to test out the patatas bravas, tacos and other great things on their short but wonderful menu.
I'm in love with the Tiki bar in the rear of the restaurant. Â Absolutely in love with it. Â I heard that they plan to expand it, which makes me happy since the seating is very limited. Â The drink menu at the back bar is a bit limited, but with the cute outdoor plants, cute cocktails, strings of lights, and bar, I could spend a whole afternoon and evening in the Tiki bar without any desire to leave. Â Don't be nervous about trying to track the entrance to the Tiki bar down--it's worth asking for the directions to get back there. Â
I won't stop going to this place when summer ends. Â Atmosphere is one of the most important things about any place I go to and I love the care that the owners took in designing the interior of this place. Â The beer list is also excellent at the front bar. Â I look forward to trying the food as I have heard nothing but good things from those who have tried it!
Our first visit to Revolucion was terrific. Â We ordered spicy margaritas, which have a chili salt-rimmed glass and are decorated with a fiery chili pepper garnish (edible, but not recommended). Â The chili salt is made in-house, and really complemented the familiar margaritas, which are tart and as good as they come. Â
We started with the homemade guacamole, which was delicious and well-balanced. Â It was served with a mound of still hot, fresh tortilla chips. Â My only complaint about this is the serving size of the guac. Â Like many here, I wanted more, especially to put on the tacos we ordered. Â Segue...
To the tacos: Â We ordered the fish and the shrimp, having read the reviews here. Â Both the bartenders said the fish were their favorite, and the readers here seem to prefer the shrimp. Â Honestly, neither of us could decide which were better. Â Both were fresh, light, and perfectly seasoned, and served traditionally in doubled soft corn tortillas. Â The mango salsa served with both added just the right sweet and spicy component. Â I'd order either again in a heartbeat. Â Hopefully they'll eventually let you split your order and get one of each, but for now you'll just have to share with someone else. Â
We also ordered the oddball on the menu, the sausage roll, which clearly was a nod to the English home of the owner. Â Again, the sausage is homemade and had a delicious, sage-infused flavor. Â This is a true beer-soaking appetizer, and will be on my list of craves come wintertime.
Even the frites were good, served perfectly crisped and blazing hot. Â It was suggested we ask for "a schmeckel" of the spicy pepper sauce, a smoky, on-the-good-side-of-incendiary chipotle sauce. Â While this isn't normally served on the side, we thought it should be, since we didn't even touch the ketchup. Â
After dinner, we settled up inside and headed out back to the Tiki Bar. Â We tried the Mai Tai, the Blue Marlin (named after the mascot hanging overhead), the Pinky Gonzalez, and the Naptown Tornado. Â My partner liked his tequila-infused Gonzalez, while I preferred the tart, clear flavors of the Blue Marlin. Â
In summary, Revolucion has just the right mix of simple and excellently made food, creative drinks, and vibrant decor for a fun night out in the square. Â There are places to get better tacos in town, but not many, and none with the hip atmosphere of Revolucion.
This place has quickly become my favorite place to hang out. Â I absolutely love the mexican art and decor, the tacos, the friendly bartenders, and the spicy margarita. Â I love mexican food, art, and culture, and walking into Revolucion gives me a nostalgia feeling from growing up in California. Â
Take a walk through what has now been nicknamed "purgatory" and step into the island themed tiki bar. Â The feel is so different than the front room that you won't believe you're still in the same bar. Â The outdoor drink options are limited, but they have beer and frozen drinks. Â Hanging out in the tiki bar on a summer night, makes me feel like I'm on vacation. Â
I am SO glad this place opened up in Fountain Square. Â I'm going to be here a lot.
I think I have been here 3 times this week...that is how much I am really enjoying this place. I may or may not have gone 2 times in one day...
I had not been out the tiki porch for the first review, but this might be one of the best outdoor spots in the city. It is simple and the picnic bench setup just begs people to have group conversations.
I can't say enough about the veggie tacos, I am not going to try and build them up....just eat them yourself; even if you are not a herbivore.
Just go.
Lucha Libre masks.
Five Stars.
I'm serious.
I miss them.
They now have a place in this town. Don't be shocked if you see me sporting one. Well... you can be surprised but I told you so.
If this was a room that didn't have a bar or food and just had what it has on the walls... five stars.
I've been mighty hesitant to give five stars lately -- it needs to be a full-sensory experience that gets me from every angle to get the five stars (read: last review of five stardom -- Terry's Turf Club). You'll notice I like bright lights, big flavor, craft beer, neon colors, sincere service in borderline kitsch environments).
All you need to know:
*a dedication to craft beer in the front room
*a dedication to tiki beer & drinks in the tiki bar / patio in the back.
*a dedication to cantina style eats while also pleasing the staples of burgers and fries too. I don't know why you would not want to be Tom Selleck in a Ferrari with a fish taco in your right hand while being Magnum P.I. You can get that fish taco at Revolucion.
*The hot chipotle salsa is worth every ounce of work & effort to get there.
*Say, "patata bravas," loud, or at least join me here when I say it loud after I order the chipotle potato toothpick thing that makes me smile.
The tacos are bigger than usual, so an order of two is just fine. There's a full bar if that's your thing.
I think if you asked the owners, "do you intend to be an authentic mexican cantina?" I think you might get an answer like, "well, not really, um, we're not mexican." So... having said that... the food is a deviation of classic Mexican food -- you know... just so your expectations are set.
Again, lucha libre masks while eating a fish taco makes me smile -- a lot. A very smile-forward venue, I'd say. Count me in!
