Good place. Â I've always enjoyed myself here because a lot of my friends will be out here any day of the night. Â It's spacious and got room to sit and just chat with friends, which certainly beats Maloney's or Barney's. Â It's a great place.
The bad parts: Â the bartenders take forever to get you drinks. Â But bring a female friend, because they get drinks fast (if they're cute) and a lot of times, for free (shady male bartenders). Â If your female friends are extra nice, they'll just get drinks and throw them your way.
Not much else to it. Â They sell food, but I've never personally bought any here. Â And it can get super crowded on some days.
At first I was excited at the chance to have a variety of good beer on tap while hanging out in Westwood. Â But looks like they just changed owners, the change of ownership notice from the city in the window was the give away. Â I guess I should give them a break because that is always a difficult time, but 3 stars is giving them a gift for that as well as they had obsidian stout on nitro, one of my favorite beers, which I can't get back east. Â
But when the bartender is not interested in us or the one other table in the place, and the place has no ventilation, and it has one of the scariest bathrooms I've been to in a while, they are lucky to have 3 stars and not 2. Â So if you can get the bartender to stop watching TV there is a good selection of drafts and if you want to be left a lone then it is a good place. Â But if you like places where the bathroom faucet is not attached to the sink and there is standing water in the john, then have at it. Â So one beer for my group and we were out of here and went somewhere else.
Our Bartender was really nice and they have great beers on tap, but the beers were not very cold. Actually, warm might be a good word... and the space itself was crazy warm which made the whole experience pretty awful. But we were in and out and had a drink and was taken care of immediately, so I at least gave the place 2 stars. Someone said the place is getting ready to close. Probably a good idea if that's how that place runs...
Review Source:Good food, good crowd. Mostly students from UCLA of course. Came when it was Game 7 of the NBA playoffs. Surprised it wasn't as crowded as it should be, but there's tons of room, there's a back room. It isn't so visually appealing, but hey, there's a lot of room for people to watch.
Food is okay, typical bar food I guess - when you look back, it's not worth what you pay for, but at the time of the game it sure was. Small selection of beer, but they have good unconventional choices! Kitchen managed to serve food at a good timing too considering it was really busy, and they keep track of where you sit - even if the one who took your order wasn't the one delivering it!
We came in here last night and the place was packed with UCLA students! It had a great beer selection and a very college vibe. Though the bartender was only pouring beers, I have to give him kudos for serving me immediately after I approached the bar. There was at least 30 people packed around the bar, and he pointed me out for being empty handed.
Review Source:I came to the establishment thinking "Great, a brew house". Walked in and saw a ton of beers on tap and what appeared to be giant holding tanks like you see at any other brew house. Got up to the bar:
Me: "Hi what beers are on tap that you brew in house"
Bartender: "Oh, we don't brew beers in house"
Me: "But your a brew house and you have tanks behind you"
Bartender: "Those are just for decor"
Seriously guys??? I mean this is the epitome of Los Angeles... what a bunch of posers. They should just call themselves a bar.
#146. Stumbled upon BrewCo with my friends. Â There's definitely a sense of homieness here. Â The jukebox at the front, massive crowds here and there, people singing off-key... such joy.
The drinks aren't anything to write home about, but it's a good atmosphere for students to let loose. Â Sad to hear that it's closing soon. Â I didn't go to UCLA, but I can see how people will miss it. Â Reminds me of MacLaren's from HIMYM.
Oh BrewCo, I'm going to miss you. Â For those of you who don't know, Boiling Crab will be replacing this place in the near future. Â I've had lots of great college memories here, from karaoke upstairs, $3 Long Island on Wednesdays, and of course their STDs (it's a drink). Â
This place is as close as you can get to that "college bar" so come enjoy it while you still can!
Ok, I'm about to leave UCLA and Brewco is about to end their business. I didn't give a damn when every other store in westwood village closed down, but this bar? This is pretty sad. I can't say I enjoyed their beer much, but I have some good memories from this place.
They have the only karaoke night, I actually enjoyed. You could see a bunch of drunk grad students(and they look happy for real!) and once I saw my prof sang and that made my week.
Ugh.. and It's going to be replaced by boiling crab? that's even worse. Â
Anyway, rip Brewco, you will be missed.
Brewco, I miss you! You have so many of my memories! So many weekly trivia and karaoke nights.. Happy hours, games, birthdays, and holidays were spent here. My grad school life would have been seriously lacking if it weren't for my good friends (and lots of beer) at brewco. The classic nachos and fries never let me down. George is my favorite and he's the BEST bartender in the world!!!!!! My best advice to all the impatient drinkers who come here- Â realize that you're in a college bar, don't wave your hands frantically and don't shout at the bartenders, they already see you! If you're not acting like a dick, you'll get served!
I can't wait to be back in LA and stop in to say 'hi' and drink a beer on the patio!
So, the truth is, I'm a drinking noob. Some great friends took me here for the first time after I turned 21, so this was my first bar experience. And I think BrewCo's a pretty fun place to have a first bar experience, especially with all the different rooms, but then again, is this what all bars are like? ...anyway.
I'm giving this four stars because it was enough fun and a overall great experience. Can't comment on the dranks 'cause dranks are dranks to me or prices 'cause I didn't really spend any money... but soon. Soon.
WOW....so my boyfriend and I Â stumbled upon This place on accident- and I'm SO glad we did. The bartender, Chris, was such a chill dude. Â He was attentive, he gave us great tips on beers and answered all our questions about the menu....and KILLER drinks oh and the Tortilla soup, nachos and wings are KILLER!! Â Oh and LADIES they have sprite zero for the cocktails :). great place!!!
Review Source:UggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhÂ. That is how I feel about Westwood in general, and the fact that Westwood Brewing Company is the afterschool bar of choice for UCLA grad students. Like the neighborhood in which it is located, Brewco has zero character, mediocreish boring cuisine, and is just... blah. Not to mention most of the bartenders are rude and dismissive. If it weren't for the happy hour prices on food and drinks, there'd be absolutely NO appeal for going to this bar. At all.
Brewco's only other saving grace is ONE bartender I met a couple visits back who is absolutely the bomb. His name is Kua, he usually works at the bar on the right side of the place, and he actually treats you like a human being (unlike the socially inept jerks working the front bar). We stopped by on my friend's birthday and Kua hooked us up with some fun shots. He's awesome. Another possible highlight of the place is the fact that it has late-night karaoke. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to check out that scene, since I make it a point to spend as little time in Westwood as I possibly can without failing my classes. Suchhhhhh a blah piece of LA.
Blah.
Argh...It is so rare that I actually write a bad review. I mean, I figure places that get lots of bad reviews usually end up closing, so no need for me to pile on, right? But this place just plain ol' sucks.
Came up to Westwood this past weekend for the UCLA vs. Arizona game and wanted to throw back some drinks en masse like we used to when we were in school (just now with valid IDs).
Walked in around 2pm to a mostly empty place to have the bartender immediately tell us "no table service...if you want food, you need to order it from the bar." OK, my friend...no worries...we're happy to order from you at the bar. We grab menus from a stack on the bar and go pick a place to sit down. Bartender then shouts across the bar "oh, and you can only have one check and I won't split the bill when it comes time to pay." Gotcha. Okee Dokee.
After a few minutes, we walk back up to the bar to order some beers...My first choice comes back with a "don't have it, you need to order one that's not blacked out." Blacked out you say? He points to the beer listed on my menu and says "oh, I must have gotten tired of blacking out menus and didn't get this one. We don't have it." We played a few more rounds of "guess what beer they actually have" before finalizing the order.
We sip the suds, peruse the menus, then one-by-one wander back up to the bar to place our food orders. While we wait for our food, we see several other groups wander in, go sit down, wait for several minutes looking around for service, and ultimately get up and leave. Bartender must have been in the back cooking as no one gave them the same tip of how one needed to order from the bar.
Food comes. We eat it. It's edible, but not much more than that...One more round of beers...we're done and ready to move on. Shame on us for actually sticking it out this long!
On our way out we found out where the bartender was sneaking off to when he wasn't shouting at people from behind the bar...he kept going out front to smoke on the sidewalk...
Jeez. In a Westwood Village already starving for good watering holes, you don't have to do much to be a hit. This place couldn't even do the minimum...
Unless you're a young college kid her for a frat/sorority mixer, skip this place. Trust me. It takes a lot for me to write a bad review...and I think I am actually being kind here...
Rest of the day was a hit as we spent the next few hours in bars with great service and a lot more people...
Okay, I'll admit it, I'm a fangirl for BrewCo, but that's most likely because I graduated from UCLA and pretty much everyone who works here is such a pleasure to talk to. Don't just bellow out your orders for the laundry list of drinks meant to help you forget the obnoxious mistakes you're about to make that night at the bartender or carelessly shove through the doors past the bouncers who let you in - they're people, too! They can be extremely personable and they'll be real with you (whether you like it or not), which is honestly what sets them apart from the other bars I've been to (at least in NY/LA).
This is the only bar I ever want to go to in Westwood - Maloney's is full of skeezes and fratboys (I guess they're synonymous), Palomino's crowd is older and the atmosphere is less lively (and it shuts down early), and the crowd at the Glendon is too reserved (but everyone just goes there for the happy hour anyway).
Another thing I love about BrewCo is that they have a little bit of everything here: Margarita Mondays, Comedy Nights, Karaoke Nights, Club BrewCo Nights, etc. I will admit that some nights are a little off because it's either dead during exam week or the crowd is just plain weird, but give it another shot. Even if the crowd is weird or the karaoke performances are just plain bad, you can always just have a laugh about the spectacles around you with your friends.
My only qualm with the place is that since it's technically a "microbrewery," they offer a limited selection of mass market beers. It makes sense, but I can be pretty picky, especially when it comes to things going in my mouth (ba dum cha!), so I stick to what I know, and that's Dos XX, Pacifico, and Sam Adams Seasonal. Their Sudworks is closest to what I like, but I also love that they brought in Pacifico on tap for Cinco de Mayo (thanks, George!).
(Free) street parking is pretty easy to find, but it can be a pain on the busier nights, but I can't complain about free metered parking after hours.
In sum, it's a great choice for a college bar in Westwood, you'll have a great time (just come with the right people), and if you talk to the staff, you'll probably make this your homebase for a watering hole, too.
Plus:
- thursday night karaoke with impressive crowd
- jukebox with good selection
- good location
- large courtyard, large downstairs, large upstairs rooms
- good selection of beers with many offerings of the same brewery (full sail, anchor, oskar blues, angel city, stone, bear republic)
- only $3 beers are draft full sail or 16 oz. miller high life
Minus:
- food is underwhelming
- despite the good selction, most other beers on tap are a steep $6 or $7
- don't be fooled, despite its name, this place does not brew their own beer
Why are well drinks now $8?? Â Brewco, i am a BROKE ass college student who cannot afford to spend so much on drinks.
Midori Sours are a dollar cheaper ($6), but in a short glass that is half the size of what it was before. Â DO NOT LIKE.
Still can't drink a STD without having bad memories flood back to me...
In a sense, this is place is like giving pearls to the pigs. Yeah, I bashed USC students a few reviews ago, time for equal treatment for them Bruins folk.
This place has a great selection of craft beer. Stuff that is really tasty and you don't often find on tap list outside of places that know quality beer. So why is it that this place is in West Wood? I mean, let's face reality, the place is dead.
Every month you see new shells of store fronts that once were something interesting, but just couldn't make it in the economy. So it's surprising that this place has survived for as long as it had in the awkward location far off the main road.
More confusing is why they have such a good variety of beer on tap when they're so close to UCLA. Those college kids don't appreciate the finer things in the beer world. Whatever will fill a beer pong cup, that's what they want. Bud or Coor's will do. Hell, if they want to get fancy, and those new to legal drinking age of beer would go is with PBR
So yeah, it's strange and a little out of place that such a vortex of nightlife and customer basis could carry a wide variety of good beers.
But again, that wouldn't be a bad thing if they had some decent customer service. And while it's not their fault, but the fault of the location it is in, the massive amount of stupid college douches seem to flood this place. . Â that is when it's not a complete ghost town.
Yes, feast or famine. That's the M.O. here. And when it's dead, it's still tough to get much of any service here. So that in itself is a strange thing about it all.
Other than those odd series of complaints, it's your typical bar in a college area. Can't say I would go here on my own accord. It's just a meh, sort of last option thing.
I have yet to come here for happy hour or dinner, but lunch here was solidly average. The place was empty, so my co-workers and I had the run of the restaurant, and I had no complaints about service or slowness. But my chicken enchiladas were not very good (the chicken was on the dry side) and the other entrees didn't look that much more appetizing. On atmosphere and layout, however, Westwood BrewCo occupies a nice open space and is generally inviting and friendly. I can imagine that this place gets packed in the evenings and just about any night they have drink specials. Yep, sounds about right for a college town!
Review Source:BrewCo is a college bar that I prefer to O'Harrah's. It's in the eastern part of The Village.
What I like most about BrewCo is their evenings have different themes and most of them are fun. They have an upstairs area where you can do Karaoke and Open Mics. I've even seen dance battles but I don't think that was a sponsored event.
The drinks are strong and cheap relative to other ares of the city. Â If I were still in college, this might be my spot. Â But, since I'm out of college, I prefer some of the other local places with late-night happy hour specials like Pomodoro and Nappa Valley Grille.
I love this bar. It's full of smart people that go to UCLA and also like to drink. Approachable, relatable, just all around good atmosphere. I also don't like this bar because I don't go to UCLA and major in the exciting topic of accounting so everyone likes to give me flak for not studying something far out there like the mating habits of scuba diving lab mice.
They got a solid selection of brews and there's always ample seating/standing space. Never had the food, but that would be a violation of my never eating where there is predominantly drinking rule. All around one of my more usual and favorite spots in Westwood.
Not the worst of bars, not the best of bars, but it gets the job done. Yes, it can get crowded and rowdy but that's just part of the bar experience I guess.
I have only gotten mixed drinks here, and compared to other places throughout LA, this place has good prices ($6-8 tip included for all mixed drinks).
Karaoke showcases some intimidating singers, but it can be entertaining to see the average Joe belt out some tunes too. Overall, Brewco is a fun place to meet up with friends while not spending too much money haha
I came here on a Saturday night at midnight with a few graduate school UCLA engineers. Â Popped in at the karaoke section upstairs. Â Everyone seemed to be having the time of their life. Â Checked out the free standup comedy upstairs also. Â The comedians had a few misses but mostly hits. Â Bottom line was that my funny bone was decently tickled. Â The whole room had a potpourri of people and everyone in the crowd was the butt of a joke. Â It was awesome.
One thing I didn't like was that the beer cups are not chilled, so your pint of beer gets warm rather quickly. Â A very good thing is that parking right across the street free after 8pm.
If you want to grab a beer, sing your heart out, or laugh your ass off, you can go to Brew Co. and do all three.
The place was a bit empty during lunch but Westwood being a college town, I think the nights will fill this place up. I heard stories on how this place was magical and lines would go out the door w/ students trying to get in. Margaritas on Mondays are only $3!
I came here to catch a Euro game, Spain v Portugal. The bartender was friendly and greeted me the moment I parked myself up at the bar. Btw, Spain won!
The place is a really good size and there is an outdoor patio. I was told there is a upstairs where one side comedy shows are held while the other side people rock the mic for some karaoke.
Parking
I was lucky enough to find parking on the street but if you aren't as fortunate the lot on Broxton is free for the first 2hrs.
Would I be back?
I can see myself catching a game or two here in the future. Hey my team won, so this is my lucky bar!
I came here recently for the first time. Even though I graduated from UCLA, I knew even then that this wasn't my kind of place. Usually, any place that dirties me up with a cheesy hand stamp is a no-go. But, years later, I let some friends sucker me in.
It was sad :(
I know that bars don't get too busy at 9pm, but they shouldn't be THIS dead, especially on a Saturday. There were a few guys at the bar with us, and another group at a table. That was it. The beer selection is limited and not impressive - but, it's not the worst I've seen. The food is standard bar fare. We paid $6 for a small pile of mediocre onion rings. Meh.
I thought that maybe the enormous brewing containers were, um, real, but when I saw a sweatshirt and lots of dustbunnies piled on top, I figured out they were props.
The TVs were just showing TMZ on mute. We tried to guess what the stories were about. That was fun for about 2 minutes.
I'm sure that at 11:30 on a Thursday, this place is full of people. Then again, for college kids, any place that sells beer is automatically cool.
Life hasn't been the same since the Yelp Support Team decided to flag my reviews for not being sincere enough and writing too creatively out of this world.
So instead, I came here tonight to celebrate my friend's 21st birthday, and to forget my troubles. I changed my nickname from "The Best in the World" and decided to become "Yelp Support Team's Worst Nightmare." and then ordered two High Life's from this place, a wonderful champagne of beers since I enjoy the taste (much to the chagrin of my friends) and then I sang All-American Reject's Swing Swing because Yelp Support Team's flagging of my reviews made me feel like it was a break up.
"Did you think that I would cryyyyyyy... on the phone? Do you know what it feels likeeeee... being alone!?!"
It's okay. I would have never become elite status :( but I enjoy writing reviews :)
My friends and I definitely had a blast singing karaoke on a fun Monday night after graduation weekend, GO BRUINS CLASS OF 2012!
I also came here on Friday night and boy it was packin'! I saw a lot of familiar faces and was glad to be able to enjoy good company and good drinks. Just your average bar, but since I don't give 3 stars, I round it up to 4 for a good time! GOOD TIMES!
Great company. Great nights. Staff is pretty friendly. Karaoke is awesome!
I hope I was sincere enough.
PS. My friends recommend the STDs and the Long Islands. I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about my friends since it's not a "firsthand experience" :(
WHOO BARS.
I haven't been to one since i got back from Europe, and boy, does it feel good.
So i finally turned 21 a month ago (yayy! feel free to buy me drinks ;) ) and a couple of friends and i decided to go and celebrate my legal-ness. Â
From what i remember, the place was super chill. Â Especially the bartender. Â He gave me a free drink made of who knows what because it was my birthday. Â How kind of him, right? Â That's why this place is getting four stars. Â
I'm planning to come back to mourn for my gpa, brutally abused by the midterms.
Maybe i'll even come back for the karaoke night and feel like a super star. teheee.
BrewCo!
I only recently learned (ok.. more like last quarter) that they have karaoke! WAAHHHTT??? I LOVE TO SING! DON'T EVEN NEED TO DRINK TO DO IT! but of course the drinks help :] so I guess karaoke night is every weekday except for Wednesday because...
WILD WEDNESDAYS!!!!
Or at least that's what my frat has dubbed it. $3 Long Island Iced Teas... holy moly! SO CHEAP YET SO STRONG! which obviously is conducive to a good night.
Even if I go and don't sing, it's still pretty cool to chill with friends. Lots of tables (especially spacious on Mon-Wed.. usually really busy on Thurs & Fri).
If you're looking for quality karaoke, BrewCo is THE PLACE to sing that song you've always crooned to in the shower but could never find in any songbook. KJ Gabe has a collection of 100,000+ songs, so you can sing anything. And I literally mean anything. It's almost embarrassing some of the things I've tossed out on stage there. The place has a quality sound system, and Gabe's super cool, too. He does a great job hosting on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The karaoke gets five stars from me.
As for the patronage, it's right in the middle of Westwood (hence the clever name), so toward the end of the night especially you'll get a lot of college aged kids. Bros in their button downs trying to hit on the girls in their "I-Don't-Get-Why-All-These-Boys-Are-Talking-To-Me" dresses that are always a couple inches too short. I've never really had an issue with anyone here, although occasionally I've been concerned a guy who's had a little too much to drink was about to hurl on me. The floors are INSANELY sticky, too, which suggests someone probably DID hurl on the ground, at some point. Hopefully not while you're watching.
Drinks-wise, the mixed drinks are pretty strong. Every once in awhile there seems to be a special (Long Islands, especially), but for the most part it's on the higher end of standard fare. There aren't a ton of beers considering the "Brewing Company" in the name, but for the most part they're decent. I've also had to resort to eating the food here, and it's pretty solid for bar food. Although I guess they just got rid of the pizza, which makes me a sad panda.
Tl;dr version: Great karaoke, adequate everything else. Worth checking out.
I was so excited to go here after reading that it was a local microbrew on the internet. Â Of course, it turns out it only used to be a microbrewery. Â Also, both times I've been the beer was WARM and FLAT. Â =(
The good:
Fair selection of beers on tap
almost feels like a microbrew...
The bad:
Craptastic beer quality. Â Also the beer was super foamy (I think because they kegs were warm) and thus they did the two cup weird pouring thing.
The loud sports tvs make it feel like a sports bar
I've been to BrewCo a couple of times. Â First time I went in to kill some time, and wound up eating some happy hour food (quesadilla) and having a few drinks. Â It was during the day, so not many people. Â I had a whole table to myself to study some differential equations.
First, can anyone tell me why it's called BrewCo? Â Did they used to brew? Â Â Cuz if so, they should really change the name. Â Went on the website, and it says they're a microbrewery.
They do have some good $3 beers, on a rotating basis (so I hear). Â I had a couple that one day at happy hour. Â In fact, happy hour ended and they said not to worry, since it wasn't a happy hour price on my beers. Â Last night they had a bunch of Full Sails, all $3. Â Bartender was really nice, and gave good suggestions. Â She poured me what she called a Golden Road IPA, which I didn't like all too much. Â When I saw the tap, I realized it's the Point the Way IPA, the same one I had at City Tavern not too long ago. Â But at City Tavern it was really good; here, it's just... I don't know. Â Was the keg bad? Â I tried my friend's Full Sail, and it also didn't taste so fresh.
It's a college bar scene, but didn't look like the really young, just  bought a fake ID crowd.  Looked more like the recent grads, grad student, less douchebag crowd.  Don't worry, if you need your fill of dbags, they can be found here.  Not overly crowded on a Friday night, plenty of tables, very nice atmosphere.  So yeah, I'll be back here.
Westwood Brewing Company, where absolutely no brewing happens and dreams of good pub food come to die. Â Place is straight out of 21 Jump Street, not sure what that means but this place straight out sucks, and I'm not even trying to troll.
Ordered a few corporate beers and a nice microwaved pizza, didn't feel so legit and felt kind of lousy i blew $25 on such poor food and service. Â As I ate my pizza, the guy sitting behind me came up to the bar and ordered his fifth Long Island Iced Tea that night using my back as a prop to stay upright while trying to convince the bartender he was totally sober. Â Felt like a scene straight out of Shawshank Redemption but he was twice my weight so I ate my pizza and quietly called him a few choice words in Spanish. Â
I don't know what happened to the place, it seems the owners just don't give a (bleep) and are hanging on as long as they can until they run out of business. Â Kind of a sad state affairs here as its located in one of the cooler neighborhoods in LA with a clientele (students) that would totally dig micro brews. Â Next time I'll just go to Steingarten if I'm in the area.
