Service was extremely slow.  It took a while just to get our drinks, and then our server never came back to take our food orders.  She was busy preparing meals, table side, for a large party.  Eventually, a manager came over and took our food orders.  We both got Curry Shrimp, which was mediocre and bland.  When we attempted to use our Eat Local gift card, they again took a very long time to come back with the bill, and claimed that there was only $34 dollars on it in spite of the fact that it contained nearly double that value.  A really bad experience overall, and we won't be back.

Good food... However, we spent $70.00 for two people and we were out the door in 40 minutes.

I was underwhelmed with this place, despite it coming highly recommended.

Quite frankly the food was a bit bland. It tries to be less Americanized, but the result is less tasty (and still Americanized.)

One could argue that this was once the best in the area, and I believe it. My date and I were the only people under 60 when we were there. Clearly there was some legacy here, but clearly the clientele was still in the past.

I visited China Gourmet recently and I am disappointed. It used to be the best in Cincinnati but wow now they have fallen far;  mediocre is the best thing I can say now. I doubt I will try again. It may have been a bad cook night , but I am going to try somewhere else next time I want chinese.

I've finally decided to stop recommending this place to friends. The hot-sour soup was odd, the duck was chewy and dry (and where was the skin?). It's also pricey, which I don't mind if the food measures up, but I can't say that anymore. The eggplant is still outstanding, but I'm not sure that's enough to get me back.

Look, the service and atmosphere of this restaurant are pluses.  Parking is easy and the neighborhood is nice.  But if you are coming for the Chinese food, you probably will be in for a disappointment.  We have eaten there three times.  We were moderately impressed on our first visit, probably because we had not found a really good Chinese restaurant in the area (now we have:  Szechuan Bistro in Mason).  Our second visit was a disappointment and we forgot that and returned recently only to find none of the dishes we ordered got a thumbs up.  Nothing was truly authentic Chinese fare from the hot and sour soup, pot stickers, green beans, mu shu pork, and shrimp appetizer to the Szechuan chicken, which surprisingly had a sweet sauce and was spiced with an additive rather than red or green chilies.  It is unusual for every dish to be disappointing but on that occasion, at least, that was the reality for us.   One of the mushu pork wrappers was caked with fresh flour on one side, which suggests at least that they make them fresh but is not what you would expect.  We tried a variety of sauces and liked none of them.  The underlying meats and vegetables undoubtedly are good quality but the mixture of sauces, spices, and vinegar just do not work.  I will finish this with a repeat of how I started.  The service is fast, efficient (our server rolled the mushu port wrappers, something we would prefer to do ourselves), and friendly, the manager/owner is engaged and engaging, and the patrons seem to be interesting and regulars.  But it just does not work for us.

This is absolutely my favorite place in the country for Chinese food - and I have had good Chinese food in many restaurants in many cities. My family discovered this restaurant when I was growing up in Cincy. It was always a favorite of ours, and every time I go home for a visit, a meal at China Gourmet is at the top of my "must do" list (even ahead of Graeters!) The food is delicious, the atmosphere is warm, inviting and comfortable, the staff and service is top-notch and the family that owns the place is especially wonderful. All the entrees are fabulous, and when it comes to sides, the szechuan eggplant is especially out of this world. Can't wait to go back!

Went to China Gourmet on Christmas Eve with family. The place was quite crowded ( some of the cutest kids I have ever seen in floor length white coats  etc) Service was Amazing for a crowded restaurant. The kind of service with which I am most impressed is when you almost don't know someone is there except you have anything you want pretty much before you even know you want it. CG gave us exactly that and we had a lovely time with great food and drink. We liked it a lot. .

Growing up on China Gourmet has forever spoiled me for life. My definition of Chinese takeout just supercedes the normal definition, because this is where we went. Coming home for Thanksgiving and eating here, I'm reminded of how good the food is and how impeccable the service and presentation are. They've been open for decades and I think they're still one of the best restaurants in town dining in. Not to mention, living in New York now, I have yet to find a Chinese takeout place that's as good as the takeout my parents brought home from China Gourmet while I was in high school.

I share Sasha's unfavorable impression of China Gourmet. My husband went there only once and found it overpriced, with pretentious service and food that was skimpy and nearly inedible. The beef I ordered was tough and tasted like someone had poured a lot of Liquid Smoke into the sauce. I didn't even bother having them pack it up to take home.

I think my wife said it best when she said "Isn't half the point of chinese to be really, really excited about eating left-overs?  Well as far as I'm concerned we can toss this stuff...."  We have been searching for good chinese since we got to Cincinnati and I'm sad to report that PF Chang's seems to be as good as it can get around here.

This just wasn't good.  The spring rolls reminded me of mall chinese good, the beef with green beans was incredibly tough and the sauce seemed to have come from a can, the new chicken was ok (part of the reason for the second star) and probably the strangest dish was the chow mein...which had no noodles!  It was the strange, starchy pale white thing with bean sprouts and chicken.  Sort of reminded me of that goo which is common in movies with aliens.

Obviously they must be doing something ok since they have been around since 1977.....but what I thought was a pretty safe order just didn't even resemble ok chinese.  Maybe I should go to one star.....

You may have your reasons for looking forward to Christmas Eve, but China Gourmet is mine.  Every year we go here or get food from here before or after church.  We used to go to some little low-key place, which was nice, but the switch here was a significant upgrade that does more justice to celebrating the birth of the savior.

Sure, you can get your fried rice or won ton soup or hot chicken, but the seafood is the real present.  Some even comes with the head still on!  You can pick between steamed or fried, and several house sauces are options, but the star on top of the tree is is the ginger and scallion sauce.

The service is always superb.  Dishes are plated and served tableside.  The affable owners walk around and inquire about how you like each course, but without seeming intruding.  The timing is perfect, unless you're a little kid eager to get home and open your one present for Christmas Eve.  But that can wait.  For the fresh, vibrant, and authentic cuisine at China Gourmet, it can.

However, you should not wait.  Not if you crave good Chinese food.  This is THE place in Cincinnati for it.
