Nestled in the hills of Mt. Adams City View Tavern is the quintessential dive bar and a far cry from many of the food offerings in the area.  City View has a very simple menu to go along with its great views of the city from their deck area.  The burger and cup of chili are the way to go at City View, a long with a pitcher of draft beer.  It is nice to be able to watch the cook man the grill while ordering a pitcher from the bar (the kitchen is about the same size as a bathroom in other Mt. Adams establishments).  Needless to say City View is a place where you can come as you are and enjoy a burger and a beer while still having some money in your pocket for dessert.

Great view of downtown Cincy!  A bit hard to find but once we did it was worth it.  I hear they have great burgers and will be back for that, but as far as I am concerned...decent beer and a fantastic view are really all you need.

Great burgers, awesome bloody marys and a killer juke box.  Oh yeah and the view.  What a view.  :)

The view in city view is spectacular. Chill. Not a party spot.

City View Tavern is another hidden gem. The problem is I usually try to avoid Mt.Adams at all costs, but this little place is nestled on the hillside with one of the best, if not the best, views in the city. Cute little dive bar with a huge history here in Cincinnati. Talk to any of the bartenders and they will fill you and and treat you like family.

Don't go into this place expecting anything pretentious. The burger is fat and greasy. It comes off a grill that has probably never been cleaned, and it is served with a bag of chips and a nice frothy brew. Ahhhhh, if you like this type of place, this will be your new fav, if not, too bad for you. More space for the rest of us!!

    City View rules all.

Great burgers. The big Ted deluxe tastes juicy and has great ingredients in the meat. You have to be patient though because it takes about 30 minutes from the time of order to get the burger and chips. Cool atmosphere with a fantastic view of downtown. Interesting history: Charles Manson loved this place and apparently attempted suicide over the deck. The walls are covered with interesting historical papers and there is always a sporting event on the TV. One of my favorite spots on the hill for a burger and beer although nothing super special.

Great neighborhood/local bar!  When it is warm, I like to sit the back patio.  The view of Downtown is beautiful!
The only thing I don't like is finding parking in this area is really hard.

    what a place.

    what a juke.

what a simple, yet awesome booze selection.

oh, and what a burger and grilled cheese.

and what a killer view of my condo from the balcony.  the city view is the perfect place to go with a date, a friend, a family memeber, an anyone.

rumor has it they don't have tequila because this was charlie manson's favorite spot and that's what he used to drink.  then he jumped off the balcony one night.  no mas tequila.

may not be true, but a great story nonetheless.

City View makes me glad I eat meat. This is one of our favorite lunch spots when we're in the mood for a burger.
Parking can be tricky here, cause it's a little narrow road in Mt Adams. Also, there's no table service, which is not an issue at all, but keep in mind you have to get up and get your own refills. For lunch, the prices are fantastic. I can make the last $10 in my pocket pay for the whole meal of a burger (Big Ted, of course), bag o' chips and a soda. And the view is pretty nice too!

Hands down the best bloody mary I have ever had. Ever.  And I have sampled bloody marys far and wide all over the U.S. The view is also fabulous.  There's not much more to say about City View.  It's a great bar, has good beer, a fab view, and the most delicious bloody marys on the planet.

I wanted to check this place out.  I have read many good reviews and my expectations were  pretty high because I travel and every place i go I it is either a Diner, Dives and Drive-in, Outrageous Food, Man vs Food or an Anthony Bourdain recommended restaurant.

After stumbling around Eden Park, I decided to open up my phone and look on Yelp to see if I was close to any of my bookmarks and sure enough - I was 10 mins from City View Tavern.

City View Tavern is a small bar with a view.    The tavern was not crowded for a Saturday afternoon but it was a good escape from the heat.

I ordered a beer and burger.     The burger was really good.   It was not huge or messy.    It was just a well cooked / seasoned burger.

I enjoyed my couple of beers and the burger.    The bartender was nice - I will definitely go back there but it will have to be early because parking is an issue.

    Enjoy...

    Wahoo, City View!

Ok, admittance time, I'd never been here until I lived in Cincinnati for almost three years. *ducks eggs being thrown at me* I know! I know! How could I miss such a great spot.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mt. Adams on your normal day, simply for the parking. It's such a pain to navigate the hills and tiny streets and get anywhere, so I tend to avoid those spots. However, I was told parking is easier here, so I went with the girlfriend.

True enough, this is away from the main drag of Mt. Adams. Still up a giant hill, but much easier to find a spot to park. We walked into this bar and saw two things at once A) This was a spot for regulars - everyone there was at least 40 and happily chatting and drinking and B) they don't mind new people. They welcomed us in and smiled at us. This was a friendly spot.

We met Del, the bartender and cook, who greeted us warmly and asked us our names in a friendly way. He would then remember our names for the entire time were there, which was amazing and wonderfully. I loved that.

He took our orders, a few beers for the drinking and a few burgers for the eating. The beers were cold and fresh. The burgers ... were amazing! They were juicy and delicious with fresh toppings and seasoned amazingly. I savored every bite. Seriously, one of the best I've had in Cincinnati.

My only issue was the buns, which were too soft. I like crisp bread on my burgers, but to each his own - I'm sure there are many who think I'm nuts.

This is also such a cool place to hang out in the summer. Not only does it have an unbelievable view of the city on it's patio (see, that giant hill did come in handy for something) but it's just so relaxing. They also have a damn cool Jukebox with tons of great classic songs. Del even handed us a dollar and told us to put on whatever we wanted (and it's like 8 songs for a dollar! Yes.)

I honestly loved everything about this place. One of my new favorite spots in Cincinnati. I too am ashamed it took me so long to get here.

Really, really outstanding burgers. I mean REALLY outstanding.  That being stated, the prices here are steep for beer and often the service is done with grunt rather than a smile. CityView strives to keep itself a neighborhood joint and they cater to their regulars.

They are known for their view and their burgers - if you go on an off time you can often find solace on their deck overlooking the river and fill your tummy.

I ate here after reading about it in Cincy Magazine.

I went on a sunday night and there were only a few people there. All of which, including the bartender were very nice and sociable, a very relaxed atmosphere.

The burger was good, but the view was better. Awesome little outdoor deck to enjoy. Maybe a good spot to "pre-game" before a night out in Mt Adams.

    I will definitely go back!

This place had been on the husband's "Burger Bucket List" for a year, which was entirely too long.  Finally, one rainy Monday we were determined to check it out, not even a landslide across the street was going to stop us! We walked into the relatively empty restaurant and found a table on the deck (under the covered part to avoid raindrops.) The husband went up to the bar and ordered some beers (they had a small but well appointed beer selection - the husband and I both ended up with drafts - Anchor Steam for him and Bell's Oberon for me.) He also returned with the menus. He of course went with the burger - but I decided to mix things up with the hot mett sandwich (without ketchup though - I'm no wimp.) The husband was up and at the bar again to place our order and we sat around enjoying the view.

The bartender brought out the food just in time for us all to play spectator to a car running into the wall of a road leading to a bridge...Luckily, they were fine and drove off and good Samaritans pulled over to help. After the hubbub we were able to focus on the food. The husband enjoyed his burger - but I definitely made the right choice, the heat from the spicy mustard, horseradish and hot mett was a great burn - the kind that goes up your nose a bit. Combined with the rye bread, this dish would keep me coming back. We finished our meal and beer, went up to the bar and paid and left happy customers.

I'm not sure if it was the rainy weather or the fact that it was a Monday or both - but it was a great, laid back experience.

I thought I reviewed City View a long time ago, but somehow skipped it.  The other yelpers here have pretty much covered the bases.

My favorite thing about City View is that it's the only option in Mt. Adams that is near a true dive, and I mean that in the most loving sense of the word.  To those who have been disappointed by slow service, overrated food or the weird sense sometimes that you are hanging out at a bar before it opens for the night, I can only say this just might not be the kind of place for you.

City View is always a good stop, but it is best enjoyed on the deck, Bloody Mary in hand, on a sunny afternoon when you have no place else to be.

Super dive bar with great burgers and a spectacular view of downtown.  No tomatoes this time of year, because they apparently grow their own!  Del, the Sunday bartender was cool as hell and attentive.  I will definitely be going back and bringing friends.  Haven't been there in years, and I have no idea why I neglected it for so long.

Also, Charles Manson grew up on the same block, so what's not to like!?

City View is one of those places that I was hesitant to review because now that the weather is getting warmer, I don't want their fantastic little patio to get too publicized. But judging by the number of reviews and its #2 Best Burger status, I guess it's not that much of a secret!

You have to forgive a lot of things to enjoy this place, but the burger, view, and bloody marys (if you're into that) are worth it. Parking can be a challenge so brush up on your parallel parking skills. Once you get inside, you need to go to the bar to put in your food and drink orders. It's not speedy-service-with-a-smile, so don't be put off if that's what you're used to. I suggest putting in a food order as soon as you get there. No matter how busy or slow, it always takes a while. If  you aren't lucky enough to score an outside seat, there's a pool table inside to help you pass the time.

Your patience will be rewarded with an excellent tasting burger.

This place has to have one of the most spectacular views of downtown Cincy. It's tucked away on Oregon street, off the hustle and bustle of St. Gregory and Pavillion St. One of handful of dive bars in Mt. Adams, this place features pool, jukebox, and outdoor deck. Their burgers are pretty darn awesome, and so are the drink prices.

Think of this as you are walking into some dudes living room bar and want to get a decent burger and and a great drink from him. Order and pick up at the bar grab a seat and watch the Cincinnati sky line pass you by.

The view is great. The bloody mary's are some of the best you can find in the world unless you make your own. The burger will do its job which when I was in there was soak up some of last night's booze and satiate me for some time.

Wish I was there for some warmer weather because I would love to park it on the porch and chill for a couple hours with some friends.

I wasn't extremely impressed with this Cincy Top 40 burger, but it was still decently good and I'm glad I got to try it.

I typically ask for my garden and condiments on the side so I can dress it as I please, but it all (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, ketchup and mustard) arrived on the burger. I wouldn't have minded, but--upon removing the pickles and tomato--I could still taste remnants of pickles and mustard, a condiment I am not particularly fond of. But I trudged on, as the taste of the meat itself is a little different but it's cooked nicely and tastes pretty good.

The view of the city really is fantastic, so that was a definite plus. I won't guarantee I will ever go back, but I'm not opposed to it either. A so-so experience.

Ok, this review isn't fully complete because it's been too long since I've been there.  However I'm compiling a list of my favorite places to get a burger in town and this makes the list.  I do remember my burger being delicious and I remember the atmosphere and (obviously) the view being phenomenal.  It is a great spot to get away from the main drag in Mt. Adams.  The only thing I can't remember is if City View has a decent beer list or not, which is what would keep it from getting a higher score in my book.  I'll be back soon to revisit and update my review with more info.  Until then, if you're looking for a nice spot tucked away where you can get good food and relax, head to City View.

Wow... I will agree with some of the reviews... its a bit awkward when you first arrive at City View Tavern.  If you are looking for table service or someone to greet you when you come in, its not that kind of place.  Its fairly tiny on the "city view" side of the building but I think its the small, "authentically local size" makes it awesome.  The view of the city is great and there are tables inside with a large window if the deck is full.  There are maybe 20-30 chairs on the deck with very small tables.  They have some decent beers on tap and they have decently priced well drinks.  There were only two guys that worked while we were there.   They tag-team the bar, grill and cleanup.  They were working very hard and I didnt mind that we had to go to the bar for everything, it wasnt a far walk.  They were very friendly and willing to help you with whatever you needed.  Our bill for a night of drinking, eating and a good tip was approximately $50 for 3 people.  Pretty reasonable!

Their menu is simple, if you dont like a variant of burger or grilled cheese, i think you probably should steer clear.  If you like a really good simple burger (meat, bread, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mustard) you have come to heaven.  Something they put in or on their meat makes it just a nice warm level of spicy that doesnt overrun your senses but makes my mouth water just writing this review...  The grilled cheese variant my friend ordered also looked good.  They serve all the sandwiches with local Husman or Grippos which is always a plus!

Make no mistake, they may be on the Mt. Adams hill but they are not close to the "crazy college" scene.  The people here want to talk to their table mates and even when the jukebox is playing, its not overly loud in there.  Most people, it seemed, want to enjoy a pitcher of Christian Moerlein and the sunset over the view of downtown.  I know I did!

If you are looking for a low intensity experience with a great burger, cold beverages and a great view of downtown, this is the place.

It's a limited menu.  I've had the burger, beef bbq, and spicy mett (that's about 3/4 of the menu).  The burger did not impress me (but I am from Texas).  The spicy mett was indeed very spicy and also very good.  Finally, the beef bbq is fantastic.  The beef is great and they load it up with enough horseradish to clear your sinuses.  It's a good tangy-ness when you put the coleslaw on the sandwich.  Also, the view is really tough to beat - even if you're inside.  Be aware that there's no table service and that there's just one cook.  So, sometimes there is a wait (but there are plenty of delicious beers to help you wait).  Oh yeah, and the prices are from like 1980, including the jukebox - 8 songs for $1.

Bottom Line: I'll be back for the bbq or mett.

Great neighborhood dive bar that, despite its Mt. Adams location, is extremely laid back. The menu is basically just burgers, but they serve their belly-filling-beer-soaking-up function admirably. The burger is pretty decent, but the white bun and iceberg lettuce aren't doing it any favors. This isn't a place you go for the food though, in my opinion. The beer selection is good and cheap, the crowd is friendly and diverse, and the view is unbeatable.

The crowd comes and goes in waves so just be patient for a bit for a seat if none are available when you first arrive. On a recent Friday evening, we started out sitting by the bar and gradually worked our way closer to the deck as the crowd thinned out, eventually scoring a seat outside in time to watch the Reds' game fireworks.

The Food: The menu is small, but I'm all for sticking with what you know. City View's burger consistently wins "best of" status in Cincinnati, so on my first visit for food (my other couple trips have been post-kitchen close) I tried something else - the BBQ Beef. Not the healthiest choice - although it should be noted that City View has a few vegetarian options (with American cheese as the main attraction) - the sandwich was passable. A side of Grippo's barbecue chips accompanied the spicier than sweet and somewhat dry bites, which have an interesting topping of coleslaw that's actually a pretty good original twist.

This is bar food. And for bar food it's not too bad. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars.

The Drink: City View also consistently wins for it's Bloody Mary's, and the 2 of us at my table who made the order were not disappointed. Presentation was solid, with a spicy, seasony salt rim with a pickled green bean (which wasn't gross, as I have to admit it I thought it looked). My girlfriend said "as a connoisseur, I was satisfied." She noted it wasn't exactly to her taste though - it's a bit sweet. In other news, Bell's Oberon and Christian Moerlien OTR are both on tap, so even your beer snob buddies will be happy. But don't order a tequila or Jagermeister, see The Story for details...

For a small place, the selection was more than solid. 5 out of 5 stars.

The Setting and Service: City View Tavern's location is hard to beat. The P&G towers and Cincinnati's beautiful skyline are highly visible in the distance. The river is just below your outdoor deck seat, and the jukebox jams with old school R&B, classic rock, and more. With an owner tending bar, a pool table in the front, and a side street location that's as unpretentious as Mount Adams gets - this is a great spot. One small note though, it's a skinny little street, so if you're scared of parallel parking (or having more than a couple drinks), take a cab.

    5 out of 5.

The Story: This place has a history. You can tell when you walk in the door, see postcards from patrons on the walls, and look at the photographs rich with Cincinnati history. But when my girlfriend tried to order a shot of tequila, and was told no, we got a very interesting explanation as to why. Apparently, there was a regular who lived down the street from City View Tavern, who drank quite a bit of tequila in the early 60's. The guy would talk about how he was going to jump off the deck when he got drunk. Well, he didn't jump, but his name was Charles Manson. Yup, the Charlie Manson - who grew up in Cincinnati. Gotta love this city.

5 out of 5. The City View Tavern has personality.

Probably one of my favorite bars in Cincinnati. Not only is the view amazing, but the burgers are some of the best in town and the beer prices are reasonable, especially considering it is technically in Mt. Adams. Great for meeting up with an old friend, grabbing a beer and catching up on old times. A lot of people talk about the service not being the best but I think it is nice not  have someone constantly checking in on you.

I find myself struggling to give City Tavern four stars, but I still want to go back so it can't be that bad.

The good: Unbeatable view of downtown Cincinnati; an awesome, inexpensive grilled cheese sandwich that tastes gourmet; a wicked nice crowd and some cool bartenders; an intimate, local atmosphere that, again, is unbeatable.

The bad: Their burger, listed on some local mags as the city's finest, is decent, but by no means great; Service is slow or absent, even when the place isn't crowded (inconsistent service is bad service); a very skimpy menu.

I get the feeling they're making no effort to improve on the place to avoid to much of a crowd, and to keep it local... which may be part of its charm. Definitely worth checking out.

    BurgerQuest!

    Big Ted Deluxe

BIG Ted Deluxe ~ voted "Best Cheeseburger in Paradise" by readers of Cincinnati Magazine ~ is a griddle cooked 6-oz hand-made burger topped with American cheese, and just the right amount of brown mustard, onion, mayonnaise, lettuce, catsup, tomato*, and pickle. *in-season ... we use "home grown"
    $6.75
Cooking Style/Temp: griddled, all burgers medium well
    Additions/Subtractions: none

    Burger: 4.5
Hand formed patty, cooked to a juicy medium-well, had a slightly chewy texture, but it was tasty, perfectly seasoned and had a good crust from the griddle. The size was absolutely perfect, big enough to be satisfying but not so huge you felt gross afterwards. This was true for the burger as a whole as well. The main complaint was you can't request temperature, but this is a bar burger, so it would be silly to expect otherwise.

    Bun: 3.75
Fresh white bakery bun, held up for the whole burger, it would be amazing if they grilled or toasted it.

    Toppings: 3
Not much in the way of variety, but what they do have is fresh and tasty. Im not a brown mustard fan, but this version was very mild and when mixed together with the ketchup and mustard they came together to form a nice sauce. The american cheese melded perfectly into the cracks of the burger and mixed perfectly with the seasonings on the meat.

    Accoutrements: 2
This was my beef (no pun intended) with City View when I previously visited B.B.Q. (Before BurgerQuest). You get a side of Husman's plain potato chips or Grippo's BBQ chips. While you can't beat a fresh bag of either, sometimes you want a basket of fries or onion rings to go with it.

    Atmosphere: 4
City View Tavern is a nice sized bar on a hard to access street on the side of the hill in Mt. Adams, the cook/owner is brusque in a good way and the deck is cozy. They have good beers on tap and a pool table. It can feel a bit like a church basement or elks club with the wood paneled walls and linoleum floor. But the whole thing works and feels very comfortable and unique.

    Overall: 3.45
The Big Ted burger was recently named the #2 burger in town by Cincinnati Magazine in it's recent burger issue. I can see why it was voted so well, but I cant agree that it's that high up there. Dont get me wrong, this is a near flawless burger, but there is also nothing exceptional about it. I would say when you want a very good burger with no fuss, good beer and a really good view, have at it. Just hope you get an outdoor seat.

One of the main issues with City View can be finding a parking spot on a totally cramped street, and as trivial as it may sound, that could be the true test, as a great burger would convince me to not give a shit about the parking situation. When presented with that challenge to go get a Big Ted, I would say that its a really good burger, but not so super good that I'd steal someone's parking spot over it.

While it is a dive bar, it really wants to be hipper in that respect than I think it really is. Still, if you become a regular, it appears as though you grow to love it enough to convince yourself that's not true.

The food is pretty good, though I will freely admit to being a vegetarian, and thus, I can't really judge because, from what I hear, their meat selections are where it's at.

They do make a good bloody mary, I will give them that. The atmosphere is pretty casual and friendly. The layout is good, and the view is nice.

Perhaps it just didn't "click" with me, and if it had, I could easily see giving it another star or two. Your mileage may vary.

I hit up Yelp to find a place with good food and a good view, and it pointed me to this place.

It did not disappoint when it came to their famous burgers or their famous view (see my photos), but when it came to the woman I first encountered when we got there, I was not impressed at all.

This place was an interesting drive, to say the least.  I felt as though I was driving through the Hollywood Hills; windy roads, quaint homes along the way, view of the city below in between lots.

We walked in a appreciated the dive-y feel of the place.  That didn't put us off.  I asked the lady behind the bar if we could sit on the deck.  She says sure so we find a table.  Ten minutes go by and we haven't seen her.  I get up to get us a menu and notice signs that say there is no table service.  Ok.  Would have been nice to know that ahead of time.

As I return to the counter, I notice Ms. Attitude is getting ready to leave and a guy is getting ready to take over.  He was nice.  Reallllly nice.  I order our drinks and place our orders for burgers.  There are only two kinds:  one with cheese, one with no cheese.  My friend wanted fries, but they don't serve fries...only potato chips with their burgers.  I paid the tab and went back to the table to enjoy the view.

Burgers came, we devoured, and stayed for the view.  Gotta say, we were impressed with the food; I would recommend this place if you're looking for the same two things I was looking for.  It won't disappoint you.

One thing I really didn't care for about the place, and it's only because I'm not used to it, was the smoking inside.

Parking is on the street, and we didn't have any trouble finding a spot on a Tuesday night.

This is my favorite bar in the city.  The view cannot be beat and it's a dive bar with relatively cheap beer and decent food, it is also tiny...like only 10 folks can sit on the deck, but if you go there during the early day you have a cold drink and a nice time on a patio you have all to yourself.

Though Blind Lemon is a must see bar for tourist...this is my must do bar every time I'm in town.

I wish this place was my home. The view is outstanding, and I just love the deck. It's the perfect place for happy hour, and eating their famous burgers. The beers are always ice cold, which can make or break a bar.

Parking sucks if the place is hoppin', but that's nothing new for Mt. Adams.

OMG! Best bloody mary in the country, period. I had 2 in the middle of the afternoon. I finished the 1st one just so I could order another one before it was time to go. CRAZY GOOD! It's spicy so the wimps have been warned!

I docked a star for the yucky food. The soft pretzels were nuked to death and no longer soft (they were wrinkled, dry & tough) and the grilled cheese wasn't cooked (rookie mistake people!).

But the patio is fun - I really could have sat there for another hour and had 2 more bloody marys. Hell, I could have a couple right now!

I hold a special place in my heart for this little bar.  When I moved to Cincinnati, this was the first bar I wen to, and to this day, remains one of my favorite places in the city.

City View has by far, the best burger in town, and the best view of the city.  But be aware, this is not the place to go if you want table service and a "customer is always right" attitude.  There is generally only one person working, so if you order food, they'll get it to you when it's convenient for them, and you're usually going to need to bring it to your table yourself.  Food is not made to order, just be glad that they are taking the time to make you anything......it's worth it.

They do not allow foul language or cigars, and do not have a problem telling you when you're behavior is unaccepatable.  This bar is full of stories and interesting people.  The best time to go is on a weeknight, after the flood of yuppies has gone home.....usually by 8:30 or so.

The Big Ted rocks!  Definitely rivals a zip burger and one of the best burgers I have ever tasted.  Service was just OK, though it seemed as though they were short staffed and unexpectedly busy.  A great place off the beaten path in Mount Adams.  The back deck has an incredible view.

Definitely one of my favorite bars in Cincinnati - this is where I take people  when they are visiting from out of town. With Prima Vista, City View has one of the best views of the downtown skyline. Beer is cheap and the jukebox has a nice mix of old and new (plus you can't beat 8 songs for a buck). Sometimes forgotten is that City View has one of the better burgers in town, the Big Ted Deluxe. Great deck to sit on in the summertime (or in the winter if the fire's going).

A few decades ago, Mt. Adams was a working-class part of town rife with artists and craftspeople. Even when yuppies colonized this hill in the 80s and brought their Patrick Nagel prints with 'em, the City View retained its no-nonsense charm. This charm extends to the patrons as pretensions dissolve at the door and acquaintances are made.

This is and always has been my favorite place to go after my frequent visits to the art museum. It is the perfect place to relax before re-entering the world of rent and deadlines. The admission price of a burger and a couple brews is a paltry sum for the spectacular view.

I generally go with either the juicy Big Teddy burger or the spicy, shredded BBQ Beef sandwich accompanied by some frosty Christian Moerleins. Two of us walked away happy, full, and restored for less than $20.

The City View is like the cool old guy on your block. He's got tons of great stories, shared not to impress, but to make you feel welcome. It's the real deal.
