This place only gets 2 stars for the beer selection, the awesome bartender in Imbibe, and duck pin bowling greatness.
We ate here during devour downtown and I've been simmering for a couple of weeks before I wrote a review. Â I've been here several times and unfortunately, last time was my last. Â A member of our party ordered a steak medium-rare for a $20 meal. Â It was cooked well done. Â He asked for another, and the rude-ass 60 something cook had the audacity to walk upstairs with his plateful of a failed 2nd attempt to cook a steak to ask our friend if it was 'to his liking'. Â To keep the peace since we were with a large party, our friend said it was fine, but the steak was literally mooing and our friend had to box it up and take it home in order to 'nuke' it to perfect- which is something the as*&h*ole of a cook should have been able to do. Â FAIL.
Seriously owners, get a handle on your wait and kitchen staff. Â They leave everything to be desired, and unfortunately, this former fan of End of the Line won't be back again this year- there are too many other places to spend my hard earned money, like Cerulean and La Margarita.
On our mission to try every restaurant in Fountain Square (Revolucion and Peppy Grill, here I come!), we opted to give End of The Line Public House a whirl for First Friday. The Devour Downtown menu conveniently offered us a chance to sample a little this and that and share as a group. Here's the rundown:
-service was great
-plenty of local beer options
-highlight: pretzel breadsticks served with Harvarti dill and beer cheese dips (I liked how strong the beer flavor was in the dip - borderline drinkable)
-I was a bit disappointed by the Gooey Spinach Melt with house made spinach dip with melted white cheddar, bean sprouts, & diced tomato on dark rye bread. I opted for this in an effort to be borderline healthy but the bread was oozing with butter along with an overly-cheesed interior. Yes, the Queen of Queso just declared something overly cheesy.
-all in all, the "A-OK" rating seems to be the best way to describe the menu and food. Nothing was uber wrong, yet nothing was screaming "wow!"
Meh. The breadsticks are good, and of course a variety of beers is always a plus; however, there are so many other places I'd rather hang (such as through the door to Imbibe). The vibe is all wrong and the food just doesn't do a thing for me. This is coming from a guy who eats pizza rolls sandwiches made with Pringles and American cheese. The bathroom is odd. I always feel like someone will pop through the other door and surprise me.
Review Source:I hate leaving bad reviews but today's food and service left me no choice:-( The service (waitress, cooks, everyone) is......so......slow. They weren't even busy either. Went for brunch on Sunday and it took about 45 minutes for the 7 of us to get our food. Breakfast really isn't that difficult. Well, it wasn't worth the wait! The food was cold and pretty bland. Bummer. They didn't even toast the English muffins. They even forgot to make one of the persons food until we pointed it out. I hope they improve because you hate to see a local business fail.
Review Source:I was rooting for this place but it is not worth the travel to fountain square (I'm in Carmel). The warm pretzel bread sticks were really good. Everything went downhill after that.
The campfire burger had carmelinzed onions and goat cheese, and honestly it is on the sour side. I ate half only because I was hungry. The macaroni and cheese was "meh." First of all, mac and cheese should never be made with penne pasta. It's just wrong. The cheese blend was separated and didn't stick to the pasta. Ugh.
My husband ordered the three cheese pizza and surpristingly it was good. Lots of cheese on thin crust, but very greasy.
I ordered pineapple bread pudding and it wasn't warm enough and came in a block. In all honesty, I don't like pineapple desserts, so I'm puzzled as to why I ordered in the first place. Maybe a pineapple lover would love it.
The service wasn't spectacular but I won't harp on that because it was dead (we went on a Wednesday night). Oh and there is no ambiance. The chairs in the place look like office chairs, the wall color needs to change, the cheesy wood paneling on the bar sides needs to change to all stainless steel...I can go on about the decor but my point of view is skewed because of how I was raised (my mom was/is a sought after interior designer).
We definitely won't be going back but I'd say there is a possibility everything was just "off" this night and it has the potential to be good. Go see for yourself!
What a delicious find in Fountain Square! Went in for a birthday dinner with a friend and had some great beer and grub. You MUST get the pretzel sticks with stout cheese dip. I could make a meal out of just that appetizer. I got the black bean burger, which my boyfriend, who is strictly against veggie burgers, was forced to admit was delicious. The mac and cheese as a side and I was in heaven. They gave me a frequent diner card, and I plan to use it to the fullest!
Review Source:Interesting little place. Lots of craft and microbrews here and prices are fair. The food was good (though not great) but took forever. It wasn't busy at all, just us and one other table. The bartenders were incredibly friendly so that kept us occupied. Somebody clearly spends a lot of time finding unique local and craft brews but the same attention hasn't been paid to the food menu.
The Fountain Square area never seems to be hopping. We were there on a Friday night and the entire area was just dead. I know that Indy doesn't support local businesses very well but this is an embarrassment.
I would give this place a second shot but it has a bit of an odd vibe so it isn't likely to be on the immediate return list.
Craft beer addict, yes. IV beer therapy, yes. If you poke me, I'd probably be bleeding beer. Yes, this revamped diner is the place for a bison patty infused with stout tucked between a toast. Ooey gooey mac 'n cheese with the crunchies baked in a souffle dish. If I were a drunkie, I'd shovel down that mac 'n cheese in a heart beat. Fancy that.
I didn't care much for the burger - bison cooked well done and I prefer it on an actual bun. Fixings were pretty okay, although I would just come back for the mac 'n cheese along with a 12 oz. glass of my favorite local brew. Flat 12 milk stout - the perfect breakfast drink (rich, velvety, chocolatey, espresso-like). As always, there's $4 rotating draft specials. So it's a great place to grab a snack and a drink on the weekends before heading around town.
Had dinner there Saturday night around 5:30 so it was not very busy. Â Service was friendly. Â We started with the pretzels - dark, soft, well-seasoned pretzel sticks served w/side of havarti dill cheese sauce and beer cheese sauce. Â Yummy. Â I had the spinach dip sandwich served on thick-sliced toasted dark rye bread. Â The water chestnuts gave the sandwich a nice crunch and flavor. Â My friend had the bison burger (also on the dark rye bread) which he said was very flavorful and juicy. Â My husband had the meatloaf (on the rye, I don't think they use buns) which was OK. Â He said the meatloaf was a little bland. Â The bread was good, though. Â He had his with smashed horseradish potatoes which weren't bad. Â I had mine w/the white cheddar maxc and cheese, which comes in a small souffle dish covered with bread crumbs. Â I thought it was pretty tasty, not bland like others have said. Â I think I tasted some nutmeg in it. Â We didn't have any beer or dessert. Â They also have salads and individual thin crust pizzas. Â The interior was spacious and clean. Â Overall, good food, good service and what appears to be a large number of beers on tap.
Review Source:Found this place by accident when perusing places on the Devour Indy listing. What a happy accident it ended up being!
The Devour Indy menu was fantastic for the price, but I gotta say what got me in the door was the promise of fresh baked pretzel sticks w/Stout Beer Cheese (the accompanying Havarti Dill Cheese dip isn't bad either!). For $6.95 you get four sticks of freshly baked pretzel bread and generous helpings of the two dips!
What got me coming back was the Beer & Bison Burger! At $10, the 8oz buffalo burger dredged in Stout beer and topped with applewood smoked bacon, white cheddar, dijon mustard and a dark rye bun, is a delicious steal! Add the gourmet mac n cheese for a Guaranteed FoodGasm!
Another staple that is a beer after my own heart is the Lexington Brewing Co. Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. It's a bit pricey @ $7/pint, but each drop is worth every hot red cent! I seriously cannot get enough of this stuff! I had just finished the actual Kentucky Bourbon Trail when I came upon End of the Line and this amazing brew, so my tastebuds were definitely satisfied!
This Fountain Square cafe is a must for foodies looking for the grand slam of great food, great beer, great ambiance, and great service!
First time here. Looking forward to going back.
We stopped over on a Thursday night after the Yelp! Paint the Town Red event was over. The menu was fairly small, but the offerings were unique and looked appetizing.
The bartender dropped off menus and waters and our server took a minute to get to us, but it seemed as if a few tables had all walked in at once and she was the only server. When she arrived she was great--friendly and helpful since we were new.
The tap selection was excellent, but if you are in Fountain Square, you have to be.
I opted for the Salmon sandwich with horseradish mashed potatoes. I am not a huge fan of bleu cheese but can handle it on salads and in small quantities, so when I saw it was on the sandwich I thought I would be fine. I was wrong. I had to scrape it all off. But that is my preference and not their fault. Everything else about the sandwich was great. The size of the salmon, I thought, for a sandwich was enormous. And it was cooked perfectly. All sandwiches are $10 and come with a side.
The mac and cheese will be my next choice as someone at the table ordered it and it looked amazing.
The tacos on the appetizer menu also looked good and will be trying those next time.
All together this place is a good option in Fountain Square.
Good little gastropub in Fountain Square. Â The beer selection is good always rotating. Â Their menu, upon first glance, seems like standard gastropub choices (sandwiches, appetizers & burgers). Â However, you will notice everything has a unique twist. Â You can count on good beer being on tap and this is a menu that will provide you with many options for a different experience on future visits. Â I'm a fan.
Review Source:YEPPY-SKIPPY Â I have found a restaurant in Indy that has more than just a grill cheese choice for us vegetarians! Just moving from Columbus, Ohio where the restaurants cater to us vegetarians and vegans I have been disappointed in my choices, so far, here in Indy. But at last I now know where to go!
For my first time here I chose the Baked Veggie Burger, it was a tossup between this or the Gooey Spinach Melt. Veggie burgers can be very dry and or fall apart as soon as you pick up the sandwich so I thought this would be a good test to see how well they cook the food. This veggie burger was NOT dry and it did NOT fall apart. The goat cheese was oh so nicely melted and paired so well with the onion marmalade which I feel the cook put just the perfect amount of this on my sandwich. It wasn't so much that it just dripped out and it wasn't so little that I needed to add ketchup. The waitress suggested that I have the chipotle mayo on the side because it can make the sandwich very messy, good suggestion! The bean sprouts and roasted peppers were just the right touch to give more flavor and tecture/crunch to this sandwich. I chose the mac & cheese as my side. It was ok. This was placed on the side of the plate in a souffle dish. The baked crusted cheese bubbling over the dish adding a small crunch with your first bit. Puncturing into the mac & cheese the steam just plumed out. With the appearance as good as it was I was somewhat disappointed with the flavor. Bland, not going to lie. Perhaps fresh basil would add a good touch of flavor, maybe Tabasco sauce, some pepper or other herbs.
My friend ordered the Triple Mushroom pizza. He said it was good. I didn't get to taste it so I can't comment on this. It looked like a mushroom pizza on a flat crust. Can't go wrong with that, right?
We both ordered a beer and I was pleased to see a good amount of choices that aren't all the same choices as other pubs/bars.
I am excited to return and try other food and beer options that they have on the menu. The deserts sound great too so perhaps I will try on or maybe two of those :)
Thanks for a great meal!!!
Tried the Devour Downtown deal with a buddy. The baked pretzel sticks appetizer was worth the visit alone. The dipping sauces were superb.
Great selection of taps including some I haven't seen anywhere else. I went for the bonfire burger. I normally hate rye bread but it worked perfectly with the goat cheese and onion marmalade. The burger was cooked exactly to order. The oven fried fingerling potatoes did not look all that appetizing on the plate, but they delivered a surprising flavor that I am at a loss of words to describe.
My buddy liked his veggie burger but said the mac & cheese didn't pack much flavor until salt and pepper were added.
Service at the bar was very good. The overall ambiance isn't compelling but the food, beer selection and service will have me coming back.
End of the Line is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in town. I'm not sure if it was purposeful that this place shares a name with the club in the movie Tron...but I'm just going to pretend it is. It's the season is right the only place to have dinner is on the roof top garden. The view here alone will the night completely worth it. And then when you get the menu and try the food, you're going to be as hooked as I am.
Home made pretzels, all kinds of pizza, mac & cheese, and a cheesecake made with in season fruits are all some of my favorites.
Loved it. Brian was awesome and informative about the area, past and present. Large selection of local craft beers and food to die for. We had the pretzel with the havarti dill and beer cheese sauces, excellent. We shared the Brisket sandwich with peppers and jalapenos, this was also excellent. We will be back. The rooftop opens at 6pm wish we could have stayed for it. Can't wait to go back. Thanks
Review Source:Great local beer selection. Last evening I had the pleasure of partaking in a Sunking Mocha Mac - a Wee Mac with coffee and chocolate notes. Â I love that I'm only able to find these beer gems at local establishments. Â
I'm torn about the food. Â The pretzel sticks were amazing and had the right amount of salt on them. Â Not a fan of the beer cheese but the havarti dill sauce was good. Â For dinner I ordered the drunken chicken. Â The chicken came on a baguette and was topped with onions and mushrooms. Â It wasn't bad but it also wasn't Anything to write home about. Â Thay said, the mac and cheese is AMAZING. Â It is a white cheddar Mac, perfectly creamy and seved piping hot (i believe it is baked). Â
As others have mentioned the service was pretty slow.
I can't really review the dinner menu here, because the only time I came I was already pretty tipsy. All I remember is that their mac & cheese was some of the most delicious pasta that has ever graced my tongue :)
HOWEVER - I'm shocked that no one has mentioned how AMAZING their brunch is!! I'm a die-hard fan of Patachou and Taste, but The End is quickly becoming my go-to spot on Sunday morning. Seriously, do your mouth a favor and try the French toast. It's topped with bananas and some sort of orange brandy sauce, and it's to die for - and I normally don't even like bananas very much. The bread that they use is some sort of nice thickly-cut baguette, and it's perfect. It doesn't come with a side, but if you order a la carte, the bacon is tasty (I might be wrong, but I think it's from a local butcher) and the potatoes are worth ordering just because they look so interesting (I'd never seen a royal purple potato before). The smoked salmon eggs Benedict is also fantastic, even though it's the most expensive item on the menu ($11) - it's worth it. The service, of course, is great - they're almost TOO polite! (The first time my brunch crew went, we stayed there talking until about 2:15, and didn't realize until we walked out the front door that they closed at 1:30; they never said anything, and we felt really bad.) I feel like most of Fountain Square is hungover and closed on Sunday, so it's really exciting to have a delicious brunch place within walking distance.
I've now been here twice, and enjoyed it both times. The first time I had a sandwich, the second a pizza. I like that all the sandwiches and pizzas are $10. It just makes decisions that much simpler. I had the cajun pizza most recently and that was nice and hot, I really enjoyed it. The beer list is especially fantastic, and you can get a flight of all the drafts for a very reasonable price. I'll be back.
Review Source:If you're into burgers and beer this place is for you. They have an amazing beer list that rotates with a lot of local brews. Of course that makes the hubby, a home brewer in the making, a very happy boy. We went there once just so he could try the full flight of beer!!! That being said, I compare this place as being okay compared to other joints in the Square.
I've been twice and each time Andrew and I ordered different things to be bold in our decisions. The first time we had burgers that were pretty good. I'm not always a big burger fan, but the burger I had was tasty and had a lot of flavor. The second time we each ordered a pizza with the intent of eating leftovers the next day. I ordered the Margerhite (sp??) Pizza which is a fav of mine that has sundried tomatoes on it. Andrew ordered the Cajun pizza which had sausage, shrimp, and jalapenos. I enjoyed it, nothing like Bazbeaux's  pizza, but I'm ok with that. I think I was hoping for a better crust, it was kinda bland.
That being said about our food, we had great service. We know a few of the servers since we frequent the Smokehouse and Imbibe. I appreciate a server who knows me and I can talk comfortably with. We both enjoy the decor of the place, watching people walk by the Fountain, and just relaxing in our 'hood. I will be coming back in tow with the hubby, since he's a beer nerd. Maybe on the third time, I will find something I love on the menu!!! There were a lot of veggie items that looked interesting to try...maybe next time.
This place is awesome for vegetarians and for people that enjoy beer. The beer list is bursting with good, well priced beers and a lot of the menu is vegetarian.
pizzas, and veggie melts, and potato finger, oh my!
My only complaints about end of the line is they share a jack and jill style bathroom with imbibe so getting to the bathroom can be tricky and like a lot of fountain square, they are closed for the early part of the week and tend to close earlier than most restaurants.
When they are open, they tend to be pretty full most of the time, but i don't think i've ever waited more than 5 minutes for a table.
After an evening imbibing at New Day Meadery and Fountain Square Brewing, we needed some food in our bellies. My friend and I split an appetizer order of coconut artichoke fritters. They came with a sweet chili sauce. Yum! The two guys in the group both ordered The Jesse, a big sandwich with brisket, cheese and vegetables, as well as a side of white cheddar mac 'n cheese. I ordered the Backyard Burger. Despite being served on bread, the burger was great. Goat cheese and a tomato coulis. I also had the mac 'n cheese -- that was the highlight of the meal.
Prices were pretty reasonable -- $10 for a sandwich and side. Between the appetizer and the mac 'n cheese, I took home my entire burger. My fiance couldn't even finish his sandwich.
Service was on the slow side; it was Saturday evening but the restaurant wasn't filled to capacity by any means.
The beer list is great, the location is great, but the food I tried was not so great. I am not a fan of burgers served on bread. The chili was not my style, a little more like Cincinnati with some weird sweetness going on. A small piece of ahi tuna not on the plate, but between 2 thick sliced pieces of what bread? Totally weird. The pretzel breadsticks are good, but the dipping sauces are a little odd, too thick. It's like they are so close, but not not just there for me. Breakfast is still served Saturday and Sunday mornings. The only disappointing change to the breakfast menu is the change in potatoes. They have switched to the fingerling potatoes served with the entrees at dinner. They are good, but the previous salted spuds were better.
Review Source:I have eaten here three times. Â It is quickly working its way up my list of go-to places. Â
First, they have an outstanding draft beer list. Â Really outstanding. Â Thoughtful choices usually represent the highlights of the selected breweries and there is enough variety to match any mood. Â
The perfect thing to eat with the beer is the pretzel stick appetizer. Â I don't think they're quite as good as Taste of Philly pretzels, but they are very good. Â Soft and chewy inside with a nice crust on the outside. Â Here's a tip: I don't love the sauces that come with them (and it looks like other yelpers don't either), so ask for some spicy mustard. Â They have a fantastic mustard that is heavy on the horseradish that is healthier and tastier than the two dips that come with the app. Â Paired with a Flat 12 1/2 Cycle IPA you have heaven on the table.
The food is generally good, not outstanding. Â The pizzas are okay. Â The campfire burger with goat cheese and onions is alright. Â But the Bison burger dredged in stout is phenomenal. Â When cooked properly (medium-rareish), this burger is one of the best in town - if not THE best in town. Â If it's over-cooked, it's not great. Â
Another highlight for Fountain Square, where you can park a reasonable distance from your vehicle for free and enjoy local businesses and local beers. Â Love it.
Formerly the Shelbi Street Cafe, the End of the Line Public House keeps most of my favorites (Gingham Salad, Thai Pizza) and then greatly expands upon them. Â This is a much fuller menu, with lots of sandwich, pizza and salad options. Â My go to option I'm sure will be a small Gingham Salad with chicken or salmon. Â This is a wonderfully economical yet tasty and filling lunch! Â The End of the Line touts their craft beer selection, but I didn't have a chance to try it when I was there. Â I look forward to coming back for that.
Review Source:LOVE this place and will be back to try the long list of sandwiches that I struggled to choose between. I ended up with the veggie burger and mac&cheese for my first visit. We also had the pretzel sticks as an app.
Pretzel sticks are a must have - perfectly delicious soft pretzels with two dipping sauces.
The veggie burger had tons of different flavors going on - roasted red peppers, carmelized onion, goat cheese, sprouts - yum! And the mac&cheese side was delicious (especially the top!) and so filling that I took half my sandwich home (in a piece of aluminum foil - this is a much greener option because it's reusable and recyclable).
Chris had The Jesse and didn't rave about it, but ate the whole thing. He's not one to get overly excited with his food feedback - though he did give the pretzel sticks two enthusiastic thumbs up.
We had an appetizer, two entrees, one beer, and one wine, and spent 43 bucks, which I consider to be a pretty affordable date night.
Next visit: Gooey Spinach Melt and maybe Asian Slaw.
Everything is about ten bucks here. Yummy little pizza perfect for 2 to split? $10. Extra tasty sandwich with a deluxe side? $10. The menu here sounds amazing, and my companion and I actually had a hard time choosing. We got the pretzel sticks...LOVED the havarti-dill sauce, wasn't all that impressed with the beer cheese. We also had a spicy Italian meats pizza with goat cheese...SO good! And, because we were running a marathon the next day (we weren't...we were both doing essentially nothing) we got some roasted fingerling potatoes. NICE selection of craft beers and they also have a small selection of liquor for mixed drinks. Can't wait to go back and try more food.
The weirdest part was the furniture. It was pretty dated (late 90s?) but comfortable and clean. This is located on the corner of the Fountain Square Theater building opposite from the BBQ place...so yes, you will park on the street or in one of FS's many public lots and walk there. This is not a real issue, as the sidewalks are nice and the parking is all free.
I live in the beautiful Fountain Square. I love my city I love my neighborhood. I love all of the indepndent biz nass hat is in Fountain Square. This place is a lovely place to get out of the cold great view of the area. The food has always ben spot on. I and my wife are vegatarians and this place caters to us fantastically. The beer selection is awesome nd the staff has been nothing but stellar. Bathrooms are clean despite what i have read in some reviews. for those that nit pick this establishment to the ground need to lighten up. you can in fault anywhere buit this place is always consistent with the quality of goods. keep it up guys and Lets go Fountain Square!!
Review Source:I came here for the first time for their Devour Downtown which meant I was limited in what I was able to order. Â I was absolutely thrilled that they offered Rodney Strong wine which is my favorite. Â Sadly that was the high point. Â For the appetizer I ordered the roasted red pepper hummus. Â I was completely impressed that they offered diced onions, tomatoes, greek olives, and feta cheese along with the soft pitas. Â I was a little disappointed with the actual hummus though as it was a little thin and didn't have a lot of flavor. Â Adding the olives and feta did help though. Â For the meal I ordered their burger which was served with sauteed onions, goat cheese (super yum), and thick rye bread. Â I was unhappy that they weren't willing to cook to order as I really prefer medium rare but they didn't want to cook any less than medium. Â The bread was a little too thick for my taste and I needed to remove the top bun to equal the meat and bread. Â The flavor of the meat was just ok. Â I ordered asparagus as my side dish and it was completely drenched in butter which is sad because it is so good with a little bit of oil olive, salt, and pepper. Â Despite loving the location, I probably won't be back for their food.
Review Source:Jon C. and I were talking last night about reviews and how we like to write them after we've really gotten to the essence of a place. Â
Me: Â "We had a really good beer each there, and split a small plate! Â With my food-wonk(TM) that's really all I could have, and we weren't all THAT hungry anyhow..."
Him: "But we haven't had a full meal there".
I think we're both right, you'd think I was a Gemini, all I know is that if we lived closer to Fountain Square, I'd be here more often likely noshing exactly what we noshed on when we were there.
But I skip ahead of myself here!
Jon C. and I were at Tuxedo Park Brewing Supply when we saw some take-out menus left there. Â Huhhh.. I'm nosy, really I am, I've been tempted to vault behind the bar of The Black Sparrow and nose through the bottles I can't read correctly from behind the bar - so I grab a menu and gawk.
Mm... craft beer... Â Mmm... almost-raw ahi tuna, seared... Mmm!! It's right down the block!
We lope over, cursing the wind but we know that at the other end of our journey is some good eats. Â Probably, hopefully! =)
Yes. Yes there was!
First thing I saw when we looked over the paper menu at Tux Park was that they had a LOT of craft taps and one of them was Upland's Winter Warmer. Â I needed to be warm very badly, and though that's just me making a tiny funny, I really wanted to try this beer.
The bartender was friendly, had a quirky and fun sense of humor and was very kind in answering all the questions about the building that we KNOW they get all the time, but he had fun with it and gave us the virtual tour. Â
I don't tolerate a lot of wheat in my food very well (I can drink beer, have small amounts of gluten IN things, but wheat? Â I can't do it or I pay a price) and corn/nightshade veggies/deep fried things can bother me as well - so the Seared Ahi tuna sounded like the perfect small plate for Jon C. and I to split. Â
The Asian slaw with it? Â Phenomenally good. Â The Tuna? Â Oh yes yes indeed - it hit the spot and was very nicely prepared and presented. Â The menu has a lot of salads, sandwiches and pizzas on them - most things I can see with a little bit of smiling and asking kindly could be made less-wheaty or augmented to suit a lot of different ways of eating.
Next time I think we'll try the Glazed Denver Style Lamb Ribs.. (salivates a little).
I don't know what else to say about a really nice nosh and beer, served by a kind and funny bartender, in a beautiful setting that's a cross between a Gastropub and a down-ta-earth diner besides "If you live closer than 60 miles to here, please go =)".
My Father, Boyfriend and I went for dinner at the End of The Line this past Friday 1/13/11 around 6 p.m. The atmosphere is pretty good, it feels like an upscale dinner- but a little bit 2000's in terms of furniture, textiles. More than acceptable. I love the good selection of local beers, that was awesome, though we did not drink any that night.
My boyfriend and I are both vegetarians & we had heard from our friends that they had some very tasty veg items. We were seated easily, the staff was friendly. My boyfriend ordered the mushroom melt with vegetarian chili as his side. I ordered the brie and fuji apple sandwich and got white cheddar mac n' cheese as my side. Our food came quickly and it both looked and tasted great. The brie & apple sandwich was an amazing and unusual combination. The apples were I think baked and lightly sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. The bread was really good too, I think it might be from a local place. Mac n' Cheese was fantastic and had a crumbly crust on top. The sandwich was kind of small, but the side really made up for it. The mushroom melt was good too- it had a really interesting after-taste and came with dipping sauce. The bowl of Chili was giant- we were excited to see a veg chili! My boyfriend asked for goat cheese on top of the chili, which our waitress forgot. Whatever though we were all still happy!
We were all enjoying our meals until my boyfriend, who was eating his chili, realized that there was big piece of beef in his mouth. As a long-time vegetarian, this was kind of horrifying. He spit it out and examined it and sure enough it was meat, my dad, a meat-eater confirmed this. We called over the waitress and showed her the meat and explained and she said something like - Oh not again, yeah I'm a vegetarian and that's happened to me before. And then we were all kind of shocked.
I'm sorry, but... seriously. Come on. Meat? IN VEGETARIAN CHILI. Really.
And it has happened before? So this is a persistent problem? WHAT?
I don't understand how meat accidentally made it into vegetarian chili, but geez,
If you cannot guarantee your food is Vegetarian, do not list it as such!
So anyway our waitress offered to bring him a replacement side, and my boyfriend opted for the mac n' cheese. My dad asked if she would knock the chili off the bill and she said okay and walked away. Mac n' cheese was tasty as I noted before.
At this point we are all kind of feeling weird. How can we trust this restaurant? What else has meat in it.... are they still going to keep telling people it is vegetarian and giving it to vegetarians tonight?
I got up to go to the bathroom at this point & it smelled really bad in there for some reason. I was literally gagging, which has never happened to me before. Needless to say I got out of there as quickly as possible and returned to our booth where my dad was looking over the bill. Nothing was knocked off the bill & when we asked our waitress she said the chili was included in the price of the sandwich so.... (Now, our waitress seemed pretty nice, and she was cool, but she was NOT sorry or shocked or apologetic or trying to make things right, at all.) Shocked again we just sat there and then paid, and then went home.
The next day my dad went in to complain again about the meat in the veg chili. The man working the bar said he was sorry but did not offer to make it right in any way.
My dad also used the bathroom there and related to me the same gagging experience as when I went in there- My dad thinks they must have a problem with their pipes (it is an old building) and he mentioned that to them on the way out. I really hope they get it fixed. For now I highly recommend NOT using that bathroom, especially if you have a weak stomach, or just found meat in your vegetarian chili.
Overall, I do not recommend this place for Vegetarians until they take the "vegetarian" out of their chili. Or the meat. Also it is a tad overpriced at $10 for a sandwich! Many other, more accountable places to get veg in Fountain Square!
Cool name for a cool place.
The End is definitely hitting all 6 cylinders when it comes to doing the right thing in the restaurant/pub scene. Me thinks.
**And, I'm not even going to mention the Fountain Square location bonus.**
The atmosphere is a good combination of stylish restaurant and casual bar comfort.
Their menu offers a great selection of apps, salads, sandwiches and pizzas - all for $10 or less.
I found the craft beer selection really exceptional with a dozen taps and several bottles to choose from. All good stuff - nothing stupid (in my opinion.)
Being a lover of lamb, I was quite enamored with the lamb rib appetizer. There are approx 6 ribs coated with a delicious glaze that really compliments the lamb flavor without masking it and  they're served with a side of Asian slaw. The slaw was hmm hmm pretty good but the ribs, oh my!
I also strongly recommend the spinach melt sandwich. Toasted bread with a thick layer of creamy spinach dip goodness consisting of tons of spinach (!) with just the right sour cream/mayo ratio, then topped with sprouts & tomato. I added crisp bacon for a wee 50 cents extra but this was totally unnecessary. (But, tasty, nonetheless.)
I see myself getting very acquainted to this place. Even if it's just a quick stop for a beer and the world's best pretzels.
Half the menu is vegetarian! Â I can't even express how happy that makes me, and how much more likely I am to keep coming back because of that fact!
We came here for devour downtown, and my husband and I had the pretzels, a veggie burger, the five cheese pizza, and a piece of the flour-less chocolate cake. Â The pretzels were perfectly done, with a slightly crunchy outside, and perfectly soft inside, and the beer cheese dip was very good. Â The five cheese pizza was really excellent - I would not have thought of this as a place to come for pizza, but it really is! Â I only had a bite of the veggie burger, but that was also yummy. Â And oooooh the cake. Â I had to get it to go, as I was completely stuffed, but it sure was awesome the next morning for breakfast. Â It was rich and almost like cheesecake in consistency. Â
As other reviewers have noted, the beer list here is excellent. Â I couldn't make a decision, so I opted for the sampler - an awesome 10 glasses of 4oz samples of what they have on draft for $13. Â Not too shabby!
We will definitely be back to check out more of the awesome looking vegetarian options on their menu!
This is my second favorite place to drink in Indy. Â The beer selection here is great, and if they stick to the plan of rotating out at least half of their beers on a monthly basis, it will only get better.
I've had some, but not most of their food and I think it's improving. Â I had the bison burger yesterday which was fantastic, along with the Asian coleslaw which was pretty bad. Â Previously I've had the same burger, which was not as good as the latest alongside the Mac and Cheese, which didn't have a strong enough cheese flavor, aside from the broiled layer on top. Â I was not a fan of the artichoke appetizer, the horseradish dipping sauce blasted away the delicate coconut flavor of the breading. Â
Even though I seem overly critical of the food, the place really hasn't been open all that long, so they've got plenty of time to dial in on consistency and flavor. Â It's still going to be a great beer destination with a good bar menu and a place that I look forward to hanging out at. Â The staff have always been friendly and ready for a nice chat and the service has always been prompt.
We found our way in here after a night in the Murp for First Friday. We had already eaten dinner and were just looking for a few conversation beers. We found them.
EotLPH has a great selection of craft beers. I had a Bourbon Barrel Wee Mac and there many other tasty options that I left for next time. We had a desert pizza to share-tasty, and my sister had some pretzel sticks with some tasty dipping sauces.
I think this is a great addition to Fountain Square and will do well.
