This past Friday evening I finally found my way over to Fatty Patty's Pizza to use an expiring Groupon. Along for the ride were my wife and soon to be two-year old son. Fatty Patty's occupies a corner of the Main and 7th Street intersection on the southern edge of Covington's Mainstrasse Village.
We arrived at 6PM and upon entering the front door found an empty room with a bar counter and no employees in sight. We walked through a hallway to the back room that serves as the dining room and found just one other table occupied in the small space with less than a dozen tables. As we were getting ready to walk back to the front to ask about seating, we ran into an employee who told us to choose whatever table we liked.
The employee that we ran into ended up being our server. He greeted us (again) quickly after we took our seats and ran through a list of available drinks, at which time I realized that no alcohol is served. It seems that it would be beneficial for the restaurant to seek out a liquor license and make better use of the front room.
We started our meal with an order of their cheesy flat bread with a side of pizza sauce ($5.99). This was served to us steaming hot! After letting it cool, I dug right into the cheesy goodness. The flat bread was just their pizza dough, so this gave us a good idea of what we were in for with their pizza too. The crust was thick and fluffy and the sauce was good, if not just a tad under-seasoned.
Our Groupon included a house salad, normally $5.99. The salad is plenty big enough for sharing, but I'm afraid it was little more than a mix of lettuce, onion, and tomatoes with a dusting of powdered cheese. The croutons seemed to be house-made but tasted only of oil. I would definitely skip the salad.
We choose the medium 14 supreme pizza for dinner ($14.99). The included toppings were pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers, mushrooms, black olives and red onion. The crust around the edges was just like our appetizer, thick and fluffy. However the crust on the rest of the pizza was really thin and hard to separate. The pizza was cooked well and tasted good. Again the sauce didn't stand out very much, even though it was supposed to be a chunky red sauce.
Our service for the entire stay was outstanding. I really wanted to love the food too, but overall it was just an alright pizza. I wouldn't go out-of-the-way for it again.
There are two meals that are the hardest to f up: pizza and grilled cheese. Â We purchased a groupon to try out this place and thank God we did not pay full price. A 14" pizza, iceberg lettuce salad, and two diet cokes were around $30. Others have commented on the nostalgic comic strip vibe; for me a Garfield lunch box on a shelf doesn't do much for me to reminisce about my childhood. However, this pizza made me realize my elementary school cafeteria pizza wasn't all that bad. Â If you are going for pizza you have numerous choices before settling for this: Dewey's, LaRosa's, Donatos, Marcos, or for that matter a 99 cents Totino's will do.
Review Source:Pizza was delicious and prices are good! Crust was the softest I have had. My sister got a Stromboli because she doesn't like pizza but tried it anyway and thought it was delicious. Parking was a little hard to find until we noticed they have a little carport for customer parking immediately behind the restaurant. They don't offer ice cream anymore (a previous review noted they did so the little ones were excited) which upset the kiddos...but they have stuffed animals, books, and board games to pass the time while you wait.
Review Source:My husband and I love to try new local places, so I scored a groupon for this place and we ordered Carryout. I wish we had tried it sooner, I'm a sucker for pizza and haven't found too many good pizza places in Covington, this one was just my style. LOVED the crust, perfect combination of soft and crunchy, very flavorful. My husband ordered a Stromboli and he really enjoyed it. We weren't big fans of the cheese fries, mostly because we are not cheese sauce kind of people, If I'm splurging on cheese fries, I like melted cheesy goodness, but that's ok, we shouldn't be ordering cheese fries with our pizza anyways. We will definitely be back to Fatty Patty's. And my husband (who picked up the order) said the gentleman was very nice and helpful, even gave him some coupons for next time.
Review Source:Fatty Patty's has two of the three "musts" for a restaurant. Fortunately, these two things are what other restaurants have trouble grasping... the third, well, it can improve over time.
1.) DECOR:
This restaurant was formerly a house and refurbished into an eatery. Along the brightly colored walls sits plenty of pop-icon nostalgia. Â Each of the tabletops is covered in a theme of vintage comic strip from Archie to Garfield. The walls are lined with dozens of items from The Simpsons, Popeye and Felix the Cat. It also displays beautiful abstract paintings of Covington created by a local artist. With everything to look at, you'll forget you're here to eat.
2.) STAFF:
The people working at Fatty Patty's love what they do. They want people to try their restaurant, their food, and of course, love it. If you crave something that is not on the menu, the owners will go out of the way to make it for you. If they don't serve it, they'll figure out a creative solution. (I once wanted a flavored coffee; they mixed up black java and toffee ice cream. Yum!)
3.) FOOD:
Here's where Fatty Patty's is lacking. The food is just average and needs a little something special. I'm not sure what, maybe there's just too much "fatty" and not enough "patty" for my taste. Â This place is known for it's junk food, particularly pizza and hoagies (which, by the way, are HUGE!)
I really liked their "Fatty Fries" with ranch seasoning. There are about six varieties of fatty fries in different flavors. As long as what you're ordering is more fatty than healthy sounding, you should be good! They know how to make the comfort food indulgences. Burgers and sandwiches are in the $7.00 range, while pizzas are $10.00-$12.00.
All-in-all, I imagine Fatty Patty's is a great place to stop by after bar hopping in Mainstrasse. For lunch, it's a bit too heavy to keep me energized for the remainder of the workday.
Price per person: $15.00
If you looking for some good old deep fried deliciousness look no further. Fatty Patty's truly lives up to it's high caloric title. I will say I knew I would enjoy Fatty Patty's when I noticed the Calvin and Hobbes comic book on my table.
I actually had no idea Fatty Patty's had a seating area besides the small bar in the front room. The back actually houses a comic book nerds dream. Comic book strips cover the walls and tables and every table has a few comic books to thumb through whilst you eat.
If I had to put a label on Fatty Patty's I would pretty much call it 'Junk Food.' This is one of the few places I know of where you can get a hoagie, milk shake and a beer all in one sitting.
The prices are fair and I could certainly see myself enjoying this food after some drinks in Main Strasse. Fatty Patty's is essentially fast food, with a local business feel. Check it out and enjoy a comic at the same time!
The awesome comic-book-themed decor makes it obvious that this place is someone's pet project. Someone had an idea they were passionate about but couldn't execute it properly. I would love to have Gordon Ramsey sort them out.
I've been twice - once just for ice cream and once for dinner. The quality of the food is underwhelming at most and the staff, while friendly, is usually a bit clueless.
This place needs to get their sh!t together on the basics of running a restaurant, like how to manage their stock so that they're not out of half the beverages on the menu, and several major sandwich ingredients.
My husband and I went here yesterday at 1:05 p.m. and they were closed the guy standing inside said give me 5.......so we waited..........and waited............and finally the 18 month old and 5 year old  we dragged out of the car had enough and we left.  I checked the website before we went and it said they opened at 11:00 a.m.  Not really sure why they weren't open.  When I called today to find out.......big surprise.........no answer and the mailbox is full.....imagine that!!!  I purchased the living social deal to try them out because I have heard nothing but good things about them........well the 1st impression they left on me was not impressive!!!!!
Review Source:Yup... It happened... And, I am a fan..!!! Â This freakin' crust is so good (I mean deliciosity..!!!) The sauce is light and tomatoey with the perfect zest and the cheese is fresh (and there are cheese options,) I recommend adding ricotta to the mix... Â Toppings aren't overpowering and that's a good thing, 'cause to tell you the truth, this hand tossed pepperoni with mozz and ricotta was a festival of flavor and a brilliant za to smash..!!! Â I can't wait to return and try the pan style with some sausages and other tasty toppings..!!! Â That fith star may end up being lit up the next go round... Just sayin'....
Review Source:Do you love Calvin and Hobbes? Hershey's? Snoopy? OLD TIME COMIC-Y GOODNESS? Then Fatty Patty's IS YOUR MOTHERFUCKER.
Located on Mainstrasse, this place is a dream come true. The decor is great, the staff is bitchin', the food is awesome and priced so deceptively well that one might wonder if Zeus himself had a hand in the creation. Pizza? Sangwhiches? All up in this bitch. Only place I know that you can get fried pickles at 2 am on a weekend. And soft serve? Tell Lt. Dan we got his ice cream right here.
Check out the dining room. You'll shit bricks. Best shot of nostalgia this side of jaeger.
Love the name? Me too. Fatty Patty's opened last year in Main Strasse and I finally got everyone at work to put in an order. If you are familiar with Main Strasse you'll know that parking is an issue. Fortunately FP's has a small parking pad directly behind their restaurant for dine in or pick-up orders.
Some people split a meatball hoagy which was good. Great bread, toppings and cheesy goodness.
They also split the stromboli which is like a calzone but with the sauce inside. They really liked it and the bread again was really good. They got the stromboli with bacon, onion and pepperoni which did taste good and spicy.
I got a side order of the garlic fries. They were okay, I couldn't really taste the garlic flavor. Maybe it was because they were seasoned fries and shaken in a garlic seasoning. They were okay.
I got the toasted ravioli which was really good. They weren't burned or greasy. They were lightly breaded and toasted with a generous portion of marinara for dipping.
Patti got the loaded french fries. She thought they were just okay, this is perhaps because they were takeout or perhaps because they were from seasoned fries.
I ordered the Hawaiian pizza which was good. Fresh bacon pieces on the pizza, the crust was really fluffy and tasty and the sauce was good, not too sweet or salty.
This might go into our regular lunch rotation, even if only for take out. If you're looking at their menu I will burst your bubble right now, they no longer serve the Hershey's ice cream. They only have soft serve.
I don't normally write reviews immediately after leaving the joint, but this place warrants it. Any place that lets you enjoy a solid stromboli whilst reading an old Archie comic is seriously good stuff. Yes, I said whilst. Checking that one off the list.
Located at the southern end of the Mainstrasse Restaurant/Bar strip, Fatty Patty's doesn't exactly sound incredibly appetizing. However, I was ridiculously hungry, and wanted to try something new. Wednesdays mean $6 calzones and strombolis, and I'm a sucker for a weekly special.
Upon entering the restaurant, it becomes readily apparent that this place used to be a house (to be confirmed later during my visit to the men's bathroom, where there was a shower curtain hiding the bathtub). It's a small area and doesn't have more than 10 tables, but I'm a fan of intimate, comfy settings, so no complaints here.
And My God, the motif. Comic strip/book/cartoon characters like Calvin & Hobbes, Garfield, Archie, and the Simpsons populate the walls in all manner of memorabilia. This, in addition to the presence of comic books and comic strips on the tables, pretty much kept a constant smile on my face. The fantastic works of Mike Maydak also hang on the walls. Seriously, check him out.
Oh, right, the food. I ordered a stromboli with sausage, green pepper, and mushroom. Really tasty. They could have just served me the bread it was baked in, and I would have been satisfied. My friend had a steak hoagie and the garlic fries (seasoned, not real garlic), which she liked a lot.
I can't say enough good things about this place. Yes, it's small, and yes, the service may be a little slow, but give them a break. There's one person in the kitchen and one working the register/ice cream counter/floor. I'd say they're doing a great job. Keep it up, Jennifer!
This is a new Covington favorite!
This little establishment on the MainStrasse in Covington, and has a sign that says something like "pizza, ice cream...". Well, it is much more!
We went in out of desperation, because we wanted inexpensive bar food (like a burger), but since it's Kentucky everything was thick with smoke and not conducive to eating. We saw this place and went there as a last resort. But wait! They don't only have pizza and ice cream...they have burgers, and pasta, and yummy french fries covered with cheese and bacon! All at reasonable prices (I think everything was under $10 but I could be wrong).
I had the burger, and it's a nice thick size but the seasoning was a little weird...I reserve judgement on that because I got a kind of spicy burger. I'd try the classic next time, though my friend said it was kind of bland. Toasted, buttered buns though, which is always a bonus.
Those fries were LOVELY, I was a fan of those. And the ice cream is Hershey's, which I didn't even know existed--but is GOOD!
All in all, it's not fine dining but it hit the spot for us.
