One of the better dining experiences I've had in the DMV area. The Truffle Mac and Cheese is a religious experience..so much so that we ordered seconds before 1/3rd of the first portion was consumed.
The bourbon list was very approachable and the staff was extremely helpful and hilarious. My dinner companions and I will certainly return.
I went here with friends who stayed on the upstairs patio from 8:30 on. Â Seeing a packed bar, I went to the downstairs bar to order a drink. Â When I tried to return I was told I wasn't allowed back upstairs because they were "at capacity." Â I said, OK, turned around, and watched the bouncer allow 6-12 new patrons upstairs to the patio. Â When I questioned the bouncer, I was told that I had given up my spot on the patio and that allowing me upstairs would be "cutting." Â
I paid a lot of money to hang out at this place, only to be cut off from my friends despite the fact that I stayed on premises. Â So, yeah, I'm pissed.
I will say this: if you're looking for craft beer and good whiskey, there are plenty of other places to get both in DC. Â Black Whiskey, The Pinch, Kangaroo Boxing Club, and Bourbon come to mind. Â None of them, to my knowledge, have this nonsense. Â I won't be back.
P.S. the beer was half foam and the liquor drinks were weak.
We ate downstairs in the main bar. I had the Organic Chicken Milanese and my mate had the Whole Thai Fish, which was a red snapper. The food was excellent. We had a beer and a wine with our meals - also great. After dinner, my mate had two different two ounce pours from the extensive scotch collection. I had mint julips... Best Mint Julip I ever had! After dinner we took our last drinks upstairs to the rooftop bar for some excellent socializing and people watching. Fantastic place. I can't wait to go back.
Review Source:Four and a half stars, though my liver would argue five. Where they first lost me is with the food. Buttermilk fried frog legs were a little undercooked, and the accompanying "hot sauce" was pretty lackluster. Pork belly went over a bit better, but could have used more aggressive heat to further render and crisp the fat. The pork belly tacos were tasty, but had too much filler. The meat seemed like more of an accent, maybe I should have gone with the duck.
But, I'm happy to drink here like a champion and just eat elsewhere. Some of my favorite bartenders in DC are current or past employees here, and they are twice as nice as the bouncers. Who wouldn't want to drink from a library of peaty goodness? Blood & Roses was a nice variant of one of my favorite cocktails, and Russell's Revenge wasn't bad. I've tried a number of their other creative cocktails with positive response from my palate, and would gladly belly up to the bar downstairs or on the upstairs patio any night.
I like the ambiance downstairs. Very classy. The drink menu sounds good and impressive but I didn't end up liking my drink. It was supposed to have celery and dandelion root bitters, but I couldn't taste either of those flavors because the ginger overpowered the drink. I think the vodka in the drink was a small pour as well. My friend felt the same about her drink. So, I guess if you just stick to the scotch you'll have a better experience. The upstairs was super crowded and is a whole differrent vibe. No music, just kind of people packed in around tables. The best thing that I tried - the duck fat French fries!
Review Source:As a recent Bourbon convert and even more recent Bourbon connoisseur I was pretty excited to check this place out over the weekend. Overall, I liked it.
Stiff pours on the roof, service was a little surly though. Nice quality tumblers for the strong stuff.
Special shout out to the hostess Melody (or Melanie, it was loud) for some nice professionalism helping a lightheaded friend navigate the stairs and find a place to sit. And by lightheaded friend, I mean me. Long day...
I've always had a great time at Jack Rose. It is perfect for so many occasions, mid-day drinking, happy hour, dates, etc. Of course Jack Rose is known for their insane collection of whiskey. I can't say I have too much knowledge of whiskey, but I do know they make some of the best cocktails in the city. The downstairs area features a whiskey library that looks like the one from beauty and the beast but liquor instead of books! The drinks there are not expensive, up to $15 but worth every penny. Â I've never had dinner there because their bar menu is pretty great.
The upstairs patio and bar is equally as impressive and its slightly less formal. The drinks are a couple bucks less expensive as well as the food. Again, you can't go wrong with a cocktail here! The patio is perfect for those DC spring days and hot summer evenings. Â Even in the late fall the cover the area and you can still hang out there comfortably. Â The only time I haven't and wouldn't go is after 1030/11 on Friday and Saturday, just because I don't often enjoy the admo crowd.
Most recently I went to their Kentucky derby party which was perfect. The party had a huge line but once we got in we released they had kept the party the perfect size. Â There were tons of people but not enough that you couldn't move, risked drink spillage or couldn't get a drink. Move impressive was that their drinks were just as good!
One word describes this atmosphere (SWANKY), the people there are iiiiiiight (customers, not the servers or bar tenders). Â The staff was really awesome including our bar tender, who made some great suggestions when I described what type of drink I was looking for that night. Â The upstairs roof top is open and it was cold that night, so my friend and I decided to keep it indoors downstairs which was great. Â Upstairs was A LOT more crowded than downstairs, I guess because everyone was drunk and warm they didn't care that it was 50 degrees and there was no top. Â Space heaters helped...and the drunken convo's happening next to where I was standing that night.
Review Source:Jack Rose: SWANKY?!! uh I don't know about that...yes, it's probably one of the nicer establishments in the AMo strip but that's not saying much considering the dumps I frequented as an underage college kid during my adventures in AMo.
I've only ever been here for drinks. Â On their rooftop. Â I love their rooftop (or any rooftop in general) regardless, bonus points for the rooftop! Â If you are an avid whiskey/bourbon/scotch drinker and lover, Jack Rose is the place for you! Â If you want something else (i.e. Vodka.....sorry no grey goose or stoli vodka like most bars. Â I once ordered an "orange vodka" of some sorts and the only one they had was this "specialty" orange vodka that tasted like soap. Â Orange soap. Â Yea lesson learned and switched to scotch like a good girl the rest of the night.
Bourbon, Whiskey, Scotch OH MY! Â Go for it!
Review of Happy Hour. Â Some really great deals that go until 730 including a few bucks off beers on draft (they have Bell's Two Hearted Ale, my fave) & half off apps. Â We had the almonds and olives, which were deeelicious, and a large portion. Â They were served warm which worked, the olives were some of the best I've ever had and the almonds were marcona, I believe, and just toasted and salty enough. Â It was a nice app for just $3 at HH. Â We also shared the chicken liver pate, which was served with nicely grilled pieces of crostini, dijon, and little pickles. Â Really tasty ($4 at HH). Â
Finally, we shared the $7 (happy hour) burger which was perfectly cooked as ordered (medium) and the cheese was really tasty. Â Liked the perfectly dressed greens that were served alongside the burger. Â I don't typically do ribs, but they're also half-price at HH and supposed to be awesome. Â The bartender was cute and friendly and made a killer whiskey smash. Â A solid HH find in the neighborhood!
My boyfriend and I were meeting some friends Saturday night. We got there around 9pm and were told that the bar was at capacity by the doormen and that they were waiting for management. Our friends had not arrived, so we waited in line for about 10 minutes, but I needed to use the bathroom, so we went to the bar next door for a drink. Â Around 9:30 our friends texted that they had arrived and were inside and to come over. We went back over and there was no line, but we were yet again told that we could not go in. Our friend saw us through the glass and attempted to come out the inner door, but it was held shut by one of the bouncers. All of the actions and information given by these two men were extremely rude and I still do not know why we were denied access. We will not be returning!!!
Review Source:I've been to Jack Rose twice now and I won't be going back. From start to finish the experience sucked, with the exception of the food itself.
We had a dinner reservation and when we showed up the hostess told us they were setting our table and it would be a minute. Then another hostess came along and said it would be 10 minutes but we could sit at a high top in the bar right away. We agreed to sit in the bar, it was pretty quiet so why not. WORST IDEA EVER. We should've waited for the table in the dining room, the later it got the bar got crazy and in the middle of our dinner people were leaning on our able, putting their stuff on our table, and some chick with long wavy gross air kept flipping her hair over our table.
The service was really bad. Our waitress only came to the able twice the entire night- once for drink orders and once for food orders. When the food arrived, my entree was missing. The waitress was no where to be seen so we just grabbed a bus boy to explain, eventually a hostess came over and told me it would be 2 minutes and there was a mistake. 20 minutes later the manager came over with my entree and offered to buy a round of drinks. Â
After that the hostess came over to apologize and proceeded to explain that they wanted to fire the waitress but needed to hire a replacement first and unloaded all their drama. Â In a way, this was the most offensive part of the evening. You don't need to tell your customers all your business and sell people out. First off, why did the hostess urge us to sit in the bar at her table in the beginning? Second, if they know she's bad why wasn't anyone paying attention and helping her out? It's the least you can do if you're not going to fire her?
The bad service ruined everyone's night, by the end of it we couldn't pay our bill fast enough to get out of there!
I have truly enjoyed this place every time I've visited. Â Met a friend here recently for drinks and left happy, for the most part. Â The only reason I give it 4 stars is because the service can be a smidgen dicey at times. Â I don't know what the problem was, but our initial bartender started out friendly, then became increaslingly distant throughout the night. Â I have no idea what happened, but one of the other bartenders noticed and slipped in to fill the void. Â Other times I've been ignored at the bar or had my order forgotten, so I would like more consistency from the bartenders, but other than that, I love this place.
I love all things whisky, so whenever I'm presented with as many wonderful options as I am at Jack Rose, I always ask the bartender to surprise me. Â I have never come away without being wonderfully surprised...they have consistently been on point when it comes to knowledge of their product. Â
Jack Rose has a generally upbeat atmosphere, and seems to cater to a large demographic. Â You may find a popped collar or two here, but for the most part you have grown and sexy professionals who enjoy some quality whisky.
Have to give a shout-out to Jack Rose for being awesome in almost every way. Â We went in to try some of the special Single Malt Society scotches and have a nice dinner, and everything was wonderful. Â The "sommelier" (what do you call that for whiskeys?) was so attentive and willing to help explain everything about the Society whiskeys and help us pick out ones to try. Â Everyone loved the ones he picked for them. Â
As for food - wow. Â So good. Â I personally called ahead (my first time giving this a shot anywhere), since they had nothing vegan on the menu to ask if the chef would be able to prepare something for me and they said of course. Â They were so happy to accomodate me when I get there and made me a wonderful vegan version of their sunchoke and mushroom risotto. Â Exquisite. Â And seemed tiny, but was exceptionally filling. Â Zero complaints here. Â As for my friends, they couldn't stop commenting on "that salad was amazing" (who says that?! :)) about the steak salad, and how the roast chicken was fine but the vegetables that accompanied it - "I would love to come back and just order a huge plate of those vegetables." Â You know a place is good when it does the vegetables well, not just leaving them as an after thought. Â
Desserts were devoured and equally exquisite. Â
All in all, a 99% perfect experience. Â The only thing that was annoying was that when we tried to make reservations they wouldn't seat our party of 10 together unless we agreed to spend $30 a person on FOOD. Â Seems kinda cheap for a place where you know you're going to ordering a drink or 2 (at least) each, and your bill is going to rack up quickly. Â Why be stingy about the amount of food someone has to order? Â So we split into 2 parties of 5, and they didn't seat us anywhere near each other. Â Frustrating. Â
That aside, I will be going back soon to try more of those Society scotches!!
First time there last night. Location: right before the crazyness that is Adams Morgan. Space -  high ceilings (love that), perfect amount of lighting - not too bright not too dark, long bar, a couple of high tables by front window, and then ample seating for dinner. And then my favorite part  - the walls are lined from top to bottom of all kinds of liquors (scotch, vodka, etc.) and has one of those cool staircases that I want in my dream house in the library...you know where you slide it to get to books from the shelves...booths...regular tables...bar stools had backs (in my old age I tend to notice those types of small details).
Now for the good stuff: food and booze.
Food - nice menu - not huge but good mix of items whether you want to nibble or eat eat (steak, salad, burger, fish, meat/cheese plate, olive/almond plate). Had the delicious baby onion rings (fried shallots) and fish and chips (battered cod and yummy fresh  potatoes). The onion rings were seasoned really nicely and the sauce that came with it was a nice accompaniment . The fish was perfectly battered and fried - not fried greasy or hard and not overpowering batter - just a light one.  Burger looked yummy - very large.
Booze - folks seemed to enjoy the different scotches. I enjoyed the fact that the beers were listed in categories (light, medium, sweet, etc.) It was helpful. Also a good amount of imported beers. Nice cocktail list - didn't try any since it was a Monday night and I wasn't prepared for the hard stuff.
Service - bartender Zin? Vin? She was awesome. Attentive and pleasant. Oh she explained how they make their own bitters, their own grenadine from scratch, etc. I also overheard her explaining the different drinks to customers and she really knew her stuff. And she seemed to  enjoy working there which is always good. Means their bosses probably treat them well which reflects in their customer service :-)
The place would be great for a group or a couple or a few friends. Nice crowd for a Monday night. Surely it gets packed on Friday/Sat but seemed like a spacious place where it wouldn't be too annoying.
We arrived pretty early on a Saturday night, around 6, to find an empty table on the rooftop.
We moved downstairs, though, since that's where the all the whiskies are, and were able to get four stools at the end of the bar.
We stayed till about 9-excellent service by Alrlie, our bartender. Harvey spent a good amount of time telling us about his personal collection (he even brought out his inventory book), and the cocktails were incredible.
The place has apparently only been open for a year or so, and Arlie shared with us a story of some dude who was there recently with his bros, claiming to have been coming there for three  years.
So beware of roving bros. Â Other than that, great place, great cocktails, great service.
I used to love this place, but the whole allowing smoking thing is pretty gross.
I went  last night to meet up with some friends and I came out reeking like an ashtray.  I'm aware that in the nice weather it opens up and might not be as bad, but truthfully there were so many people smoking I can't imagine it's much improved even with air flow.  I think it's disgusting that they allow smoking so close to where they serve food.
I won't go here again.
Jack Rose is tough to review, because it seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. I've had great experiences there and I've had some not so great experiences. The food isn't all that great, and they seem to realize this, since they keep changing the menu. At times, the roof deck can be a really chill place to have a beer and catch up with friends, but other times it's absolutely insane. There seems to be no pattern to the insanity, as I've stopped by on gorgeous weekend evenings and had no trouble grabbing a seat at the bar, where there are just enough people to make for good people watching, and I've tried to go on random weeknights, just to find it packed.
The downstairs is more subdued, but for a whiskey bar, some of the bartenders know shockingly little about whiskey, though I have encountered some really helpful ones. They have an extensive cocktail list, with both classics and more creative ones, though I've found the quality to vary wildly depending on who is making it.
They have a bunch of events on weekend afternoons, and some of those have been really fun (the carnival-themed Hebrew/Coney Island beer event was a blast). Others have been kind of lame, such as the Thanksgiving themed cocktail tasting they had one Sunday.
I can't believe there is a gigantic whiskey temple on 18th street.
This is a really, really good-looking bar, and by that I mean those granite counters and old library shelves that are so well stocked with what appears to be thousands of bottles. The bartenders here clearly know their stuff and prepare fine cocktails for whiskey rookies like me. They have a fantastic roof deck and great food (highly recommend the smoked salmon and pickled shrimp). Oh, and make sure to dress somewhat nice here.
This place is so hip, I immediately thought I would have been laughed away. But that was not the case at all. Instead I was met with a gracious and knowledgeable bartender, delicious food, and a preview of their new whiskey cellar -- a private room made for whiskey swilling, trash talking, and musk (photos to be uploaded soon!).
The hand crafted cocktails impressed me but I fell in love with their limited edition Bulleit Rye Barrel-Aged DC Brau Burial at Sea. I'm not a whiskey expert by any means but all that time spent baking in the barrel made for a tasty treat.
I highly recommend this place. You will leave buzzed but in a more knowledable, cultured way not the ohmygoodness I just drank five pina coladas way which is a plus in my book!
This place is pretty amazing. I could watch the bartenders pop up on those ladders to the liquor shelves for hours. On a Saturday night it was a little crowded, but not crazy. We were able to get a table for eight pretty easily, but they are strict about keeping the aisles clear.
Decent draft selection, although tends toward the obscure. The liquor is definitely what you come for. Go with a craft cocktail or peruse the unbelievable whiskey book, which if anything is a excellent read. I had the Brothers Grimm Cup, which was both potent and delicious and a cool twist on the traditional Pimm's Cup. I especially liked the cucumber garnish.
It's not a inexpensive place to visit, but it's a chill place to grab a cocktail with friends if you're looking for something a bit more refined than any of the usual bars.
Had dinner upstairs early on a Saturday evening. In short: meh.
Beer selection was OK. Service was fine. I liked that you can smoke cigars up there (and may go back just for that), though we did not.
But the food? My God, what happened to the food?
I had a cheeseburger. Nothing fancy, but that's what I was in the mood for. My wife has the rosemary chicken sandwich.
Both were full of disappoint.
The burger was...ok. Had a bit of a char, which I liked, but was otherwise incredibly bland. I don't usually do condiments anyway, but none were offered, and this one coulda used some.
The rosemary chicken was, somehow, even blander than the burger. I mean, chicken usually has some flavor of its own, doesn't it? Because this chicken did not, and it certainly didn't taste like rosemary. Really needed some kind of sauce, too.
All told, we had two beers, and those two sandwiches. and paid $52. FIFTY TWO DOLLARS.
Like I said, I might go back for a cigar, and I understand that there's a different menu downstairs, but I'm damn sure not going to bother eating there again.
Forget 99 bottles of beer on the wall--how about a bajillion bottles of whiskeys and bourbons linning all the walls, with handy library ladders to boot?
As a first-timer, tourist I was surprised to walk in and see how loungy this place was in comparison to its name. But hey, I like surprises when they're great ones! It seemed like all my colleagues loved their cocktails and my sparking wine was... well, you know... sparkly. I think what really set it off was the dimly-lit, prohibition-like ambiance and the service, which was very attentive and nice.
Like many of us, I don't really remember much more of this place with all the sipping we'd done prior, but from what I do remember, it seems like a place that I'd like to come back to on a chill night.
Overpriced, clueless bartenders, uninviting atmosphere.
Came here about a month after it opened, and I ordered an old fashioned. I don't remember exactly but it cost around $12, and guess what? It was made terribly. What kind of bartender can't make an old-fashioned? The only place that's acceptable is Dan's Cafe.
If you find yourself here, don't waste your money. Head next door to the Blaguard instead.
The plethora of establishments in DC with terrible service is tiring, so I make sure that when I come across a place with great service that they get some Yelp recognition. I was very impressed with the entire staff at Jack Rose. The bartenders were so friendly and helpful, even though it was pretty busy during happy hour. I don't think I waited more than a couple of minutes each time I got a drink. Even the bouncer outside was chipper and friendly.
They have some great happy hour specials, even on a variety of different specialty beers. And of course, their whiskey selection is phenomenal.
I love the rooftop spot here. It does get crowded and very Adams Morgan-esque, but it was a gorgeous evening when I was here, so it felt great to be outside.
Didn't try any of their food, but I heard it's good. Definitely going to try some during my next visit.
With Admo's street scape complete, Jack Rose now seems to fit in much better into an area that was is more notorious for drunk college kids than for fancier dining and drinking.
My very limited experience with Jack Rose consisted of a few drinks in the middle of a night full of drinking. So forgive me if my review is incomplete or unhelpful. There is plenty of drinking and mingling space on second level of Jack Rose, with a couple of bar stocked balconies on either end of the space. But since this is Admo, it can still get crowded up there.
But in my brief time spent on that back balcony, plus everything I've heard from others about the whisky, I am definitely planning on making a return trip.
Great whiskey bar in the hamlet of Adams Morgan in the district.
This is a good option to enjoy their second floor terrace that is very popular.
this is a more upscale place in terms of layout and crowd compared to the rest of admo. Drinks are not cheap. each drink i had was at least $10 and well poured.
Service is a bit slow, but the bartenders always serve us fast as i give them the 'K' grin and a decent tip every time always helps.
one night in Adams Morgan
Start at Dan's
break for a Amsterdam falafel sandwich
head down the street to jack rose for a few premium drinks
complete the night with some great live music at madams organ
A lot of the reviews here talk a lot about the decor, the service, etc. (which is fine, this is Yelp after all). Â But we're really ignoring the point: whisk(e)y! Â The whiskey list has a table of contents! Â If you love whiskey, there's no better place on planet Earth! Â That's what I go here for, and for that alone this place deserves 5 stars. Â
Here's the strategy: go in and sit at the bar on the first floor, order a beer because it'll take you a while to wade through the whiskey list and you'll work up a thirst. Â Develop some ideas about what you want, and then look around with a slightly confused look on your face. Â At this point, a guy with a long white beard will show up and tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your whiskey choices, and make you feel totally inadequate, but in a good, hey-I'm-learning kind of way. Â That's Harvey, he's like the Santa Clause of whiskey, and he knows what he's talking about. Â Take the input, order a flight, share it with your friends, and compare notes. Â
Is it pricey? Â Sure. Â But you're in DC drinking high class scotch, what do you expect? Â I love this place, and I'll be back often.
If you're from the distant VA suburbs, this place is for you! I don't get it, but for whatever reason, people from Fairfax and Arlington Counties LOVE Jack Rose. They drive from far and wide and brave the big city specifically to come here. Why? No idea! Jack Rose is pretty soulless. The upstairs (where I hung out) has no decor really, and nothing much going on. It's just a huge open space with some bars. The drinks I ordered (Dong Kong Punch and Mint Julep Snowcone) were pretty good, but it's DC; I can get a well-crafted, expensive drink just about anywhere.
What's even stranger is Jack Rose is in the middle of basically nowhere between U St and Adams Morgan. You can't really Metro there; it's a super far walk. The bar was so loud and so packed; you could barely move, let alone hear anyone talking to you. It was obviously a singles bar, but one of those places that didn't enable conversation. It was like a 7th-grade dance; a bunch of chicks wearing LBDs in groups of three or four, standing in a circle only talking to the people they came with, hoping one of the guys in ripped jeans and a buzz cut would come talk to them.
I just don't understand the appeal. I especially don't understand why you'd drive from the burbs to come here. There's so many better places in DC.
