Great staff, good food and an interesting mix of clientele. I never not have a good time and karaoke nights are insane and fun. Try the burger with onions rings or sweet potato fries and the steak n' blue cheese salad.

CHICKEN WINGS!! Sooo good. I pick up the chicken wings from here all the time. Must try! Otherwise, it's a cozy, neighborhood dive bar. Interesting people and themed nights.

Sweet dive bar. The staff is friendly, the beer is decently cheap, and the crowd is eclectic and fun. Worth the visit for karaoke night.

The BEST trivia, ever. Wednesday nights at 9pm, I think. Totally neat new format and awesome music.

Beer selection is okay - they have bbc steel rail currently, so that's rad, otherwise just the usual suspects. Have never eaten here, but the food looks good. Regular pub grub stuff. all in a pretty good neighborhood bar.

How is the staff here so nice? We rolled in at 9 on a Sat night, and everyone from the bartenders to waitresses were incredibly friendly and helpful, even as our group got bigger and louder (and drunker). Total surprise, and definitely worth mentioning (thank you, Jeanie staff!).

Saturday night karaoke is also worth mentioning, as it's seriously awesome... great song selection, hilarious crowd (think less wasted college kids, and more hardcore middle-aged songsters who take their craft seriously), fabulous atmosphere (we basically took over an entire half of the pub, and still had plenty of room to move around/dance/sit/munch on apps).

If I lived closer, I'd definitely be a regular here...

I've never not tipped. Ever. I did so here. This experience is obviously limited to me (and the three others with me), but I had the weakest, crappiest cranberry and vodka drink ever. Seriously. I felt like I was just drinking Ocean Spray. I'll stay at Dogwood's. Didn't have the food, so this star is especially for the drink.

Oh, Jeanie Johnston. Some nights when I've had a rough day I have my "Jeanie Johnston night".

    Low Key

    Cheap. good. beer.

For some reason I always get this place confused with the Brendan Behan.  Alliterated names syndrome maybe?

In any case, these bars are night and day.  This place has food, though not any worth eating.  A pretty short beer list, so stick to the Harpoon.  No dogs are allowed, though fratty and close-suburban type guys are.

The reason I'm still giving this place stars? I had the best karaoke night of my life there. It's weird.  I've been there when the dj is stingy and won't let anyone sing more than one song per table, even if you've been there all night.  But my legend night, I got to sing a few, soul'd out with some Dream Girls 'I Am Tellin' You I Ain't Goin'', danced with some guys in cowboy hats and listed to Mr. Mark sing a dozen songs with the word 'Mom' in them.  (It was Mother's Day.)

Hot tip: If it's the regular DJ, only request one song at a time or else he gets cranky.

Jeanie Johnston's was a home away from home for me sadly at one point! I just had such a blast that everytime my friends wanted to go out thats where I would always want to go!

The food is good for the price! The drinks are yummy! and the Staff is AMAZING!

My favt night is Karaoke night on saturdays!

Even the owner is a great guy!

Its deff a JP type young bar but I'm sure anyone of any age would feel comfy walking in.

This little pub was like an Allston pub but lacked a feel to it. Normally Im into dives, normally Im into karaoke, that one particular night, neither suited me quite well.

Awkwardly shaped bar and floor surrounding and karaoke setup, whatever, our drinks were ordered and served quick, and our french fries were really good actually and it was quite a heap full.

Also, there was a 2$ charge, like who even carries 2$ bills anymore, quite the hassle.

In the few years I've been living in JP the Jeanie, or JJ if you will, has become a go-to spot.  Very "come as you are," with just about any type of person to be found there at some point.

Great local dive/sports bar during the week. Best to avoid sometimes on some Saturdays when it can get overly crowded. Some of the food is really good, check out the steak tips and the burger. The weekly activities are worth showing up for; they might just make you a regular.

Thanks to upgrading all the TVs, the JJ is arguably the best spot around for sports. For big events the best move is often to show up early and camp out.

This used to be more of a midweek or low key night place, but it has become a much more versatile, neighborhood location.

Okay, I may still be caught up in the fun I just had at this bar, so my review may be biased on the good side.

Anways, I'm looking for a place, any place, that still serves food after 11 pm on a Friday night in JP - believe it or not, slim pickins. All the restaurants - done. Jame's Gate - done at 11 pm.

Soooo, we're walking and bump into 2 friends who say, yes, yes, that place is good to go for food! So, we stumble in, tummys rumbling.

And - OH - karaoke! What fun! Haha, I immediately have a smile on my face. We sit ourselves at one of the abundantly open tables and proceed to peruse the menu.

We order a turkey club and the chicken-broccoli over ziti. Both dished satisfied our hunger to the very core. Comfort bar food at it's best. While snacking on our scrumptious scruples, we enjoyed many a karaoke performance by some of the most talented entertainers is JP.

Okay, I'll be serious. This has to be the LEAST pretentious bar I've ever been to. Filled to the brim with the most down to earth, friendly, just-wanna-have-fun and extremely diverse crowd. The decor is very Irish-pub, it's got a definite dive-bar feel, but somehow I got the feeling that many of these people met for the first time at The Jeanie Johnston tonight.

Think, beer, pub-food, laughing, and 2 middle-aged men karaoke singing Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boy together....that's the Jeanie Johnston.

The JJ is one of the guilty pleasures in my life.  Back before my doctor told me I had high cholesterol that needed addressing, I used to go to the JJ to chow down on a plate of jalapeno poppers and a Caeser salad and call it dinner.  These days, I try to do that a bit less, but I still love stopping by for a Magner's and some people watching.

If you go to the JJ on a busy night, you can usually sit back and watch at least one or two messy booze-induced relationship meltdowns.  There's more bad karaoke than you can shake a stick at on the weekends, and I've seen some real creative dancing the one or two times I've caught a band there.  The whole scene reminds me a lot of the kinds of bars I go to when I visit family and friends down in RI.  In a good way, you know?

OK...Let's talk about the Jeanie Johnston Pub in JP.  Mostly because Chris (my housemate) just wrote a review of it and it brought back some fond memories.

It's a great place to get in a bar fight, and their mac and cheese, albeit a little salty, is a great value.

Did you know that I start all my reviews with "OK," then briefly mention the place I'm reviewing, go on a personal tangent and eventually get back onto the topic?  That's my formula.  Now you know!

Being a Cultural Anthropologist, I quite enjoy watching people as if they were animals in cages.  This suggests that I might have Antisocial Personality Disorder, but the diagnosis was inconclusive.

After about 9 pm, the JJ crowd seems to devolve into monsters, like when Captain Janeway on Star Trek Voyager turned into a space iguana.

I watched a young couple show up, have some drinks and proceed to act all lovey dovey.  The girl went to the bathroom, the guy called another girl on his cell phone and said: "I'll to get over there soon..." The original girl reappeared.  Guy got angry and asked her where the fuck she had been.  She told him he was a psycho, and she went across the bar to another guy, a stranger to her, and asksed him for a smoke.  They went outside.  The first guy looked out the window, waited for the other two to return, and splashed his PBR in the girl's face.  The smoking guy's  girlfriend appeared and attacked the first girl from the side. The two girls were tossed out and the guys bought each other a beer.  Then the smoking guy left.  The other one picked on a disabled guy and another bar fight started but it ended quickly when the disabled guy started having a seizure.

    Really interesting.

I thought I was going to get into a bar fight there before.  This guy was staring at me, spitting a bit when he chomped at the air, saying some slurred stuff about fags and kicking ass, or something. But, I think I might have misinterpreted him, as it became apparent that he wanted to have sex with me.  Straight guys wanting to experiment are so funny.  It's amazing they can drive or hold jobs, never mind get laid.  Anyway, after I told him to kindly fuck off he suggested that we go to the bathroom, and mentioned something about how he wasn't a fag but that he wouldn't kick Marky Mark out of bed.  Then he started hugging me and calling me "bro."  Later he sang "Good Vibrations" (not the Beach Boys version, by the way) on the Karaoke machine while undressing me with his eyes!

If you think I judge, you misread me, dear reader.  I should note that the bar staff are laid back good guys, the beer is good, varied and cheap.  It smells a little like barf in there, but all JP bars do, except the dbag expensive ones.  I love the JJ.  Plus they are open until 2am!!!!  Super bonus!

Anyway, you seriously need to get the $3 mac and cheese, a pint of PBR, kick back and take it all in.  Karaoke is especially fantastic.  Also, the drunk men in uniform provide some fun twists and turns.  Let's just hope there aren't any emergencies in Center-South JP on a Saturday night!  Oh, no wait: BAR FIGHT!

A friend and I were planning on a trip to the Arboretum, so I researched pubs in the area, and found this place.

We got here at 2:30 PM on a Monday, and they didn't open until 3:00 -- D'OH! However, it was worth the wait. They have Sierra Nevada on tap, a friendly owner/bartenter, and delicious sandwiches.
I also enjoyed the other friendly patrons who came in . . . there's nothing like a good Irish pub! I'll definitely be back.

Solid place. Good cheap drinks. A good draft costs under 5$, which is awesome for a place that also serves good food!

GET THE WINGS. you will not regret it :)

2003 was a terrible year. Not just for me personally, but for the whole country. George W. Bush launched his pointless and idiotic invasion of Iraq. The United States' international standing tanked. And the Jeanie Johnston, the pub that I lived across the street from and often visited, renamed "French fries" to "freedom fries."

Seriously, guys? Really? For those of you that have forgotten, there was some kind of weird right-wing attempt by the Bush administration's apologists to "punish" the government of France for daring to question our wisdom in invading Iraq, WMDs or (as turned out to be the case) no WMDs. And part of that "punishment" was official encouragement to rename foods that happened to have the word "French" in them. Tres bizarre, non? Well, France was right all along, believe it or not. France 1, USA 0.

In 2003, I was sick about the invasion, sick about the general approval of the war, and sick about the Jeanie Johnston's right-wing-pandering menu. (I mean, come on.) I never went back.

I don't know if they still have "freedom fries" on the menu seven years later, so I've awarded them an extra star. But for those who like their beer and burgers with a side of sanctimoniousness, this might be the place for you.

Great Bar! - I get a sense of comfort when I come here - only been around 6 times.  All I know is the help is super nice*** - both bartenders and waitress, very attentive - trivia night is super fun - if you're looking for pub food this place has it and it's good.

I sang karaoke here once - it was Elvis and I was Caught in a Trap.

***Even when a buddy knocks over a full pint - cleaned it up happily and gave us no attitude - that's how humans should be - Jeanie Johnston a great place for humans

After the guys at my job kept raving about the 25 cent wings here, I finally tagged along and joined them! I think overall we ordered about 40 wings.  Ridiculous, I am still trying to recover from the amount of wings I ate.  Not to mention the Long Island I ordered was extremely light, usually when I get these they are a little on the dark side..resembling Iced Tea.

I'm not exactly complaining, I just regret not eating before I came here because the Long Island was stronger than I'm used to.

This was a decent experience, minus the guy who served us wings & drinks. He tried to make it seem like he didn't want us to order that many wings, according to the cook they wanted to "save some for people coming in later on." It was already 8pm, and there were 5 of us, plus one woman dining alone, on a snowy day! So I'm not sure what crowd he was waiting for, from what I hear it's usually not that busy in here, lol yikes.

Definitely an awesome dive bar and yes I can describe some dive bars as completely awesome and mean it.  I went last night for trivia night and it was above average compared to other bar trivias that I've been to.  Not only did the trivia lady person come up with some creative questions but she also provided a killer soundtrack for the evening!  I was introduced to some great new bands.

As far as the bar itself, it really is a small hole-in-the-wall type place but I'd choose one of these establishments over some dance club any day!  The beer on tap was cold and delicious and though I did not try the food it looked pretty good.  Too bad I don't live near JP or I would probably go to Jeanie Johnston's more often.  Definitely a good place for groups of friends to hang out, get a drink, and have some conversation.

A nice place for a few pints - and a story.

So the food is not fantastic, but it's not terrible, either - standard pub fare.  JJ is a must for any JP pub crawl.  Because of the lack of good TVs, it's not really the best place in the neighborhood to catch a game.  Rather JJ is a good place to have a few beers and chill with friends.  The staff is nice and attentive.  Heads up - It might be best to come here with someone who has been here a few times - not all the patrons are super-friendly to newcomers.

But the thing I personally find most fascinating about the JJ is that every time I come here, alone or in groups, something memorable seems to happen.  I know it sounds a bit strange, and I don't know if this happens to any other of you folks out there, but I would like to know.

Here's my favorite JJ story - and it seems run-of-the mill for this joint.  Eight years ago I came here with my girlfriend at the time and a buddy of mine.  We had a few drinks, and I think I might have been one of "those" guys that night.  I was haranguing the musician who was playing an assortment of tunes, including some Irish music, to play a song that he didn't know.  After insulting him with "What kind of Irish musician doesn't know Celtic Symphony!" he became a bit upset and asked me who the performer in the room was - him or I.  He clearly wanted to take the opportunity to shut me up for good.

Instead of redeeming myself and shutting up, I told him "I'm the performer here," jumped up and sang a song.  The crowd had a great laugh, and sang along a bit.  A few minutes later, a bon-a-fide barroom brawl broke out (no, I was not involved).  Our table was flipped over in the fracas, and dinner spilled on the floor.  My buddy's drink spilled on his lap, and then crashed to the floor.  My girlfriend and I, like the good Alcohol Abuse Prevention Specialists we are, saved our beers from the same fate - just in the nick of time.  When she hoisted that full pint glass in triumph over certain disaster, I knew I wanted to be her husband.  And I am.

Thank you Jeanie Johnston for this great moment - and comping us for our troubles that night.

What a pathetic place.  Full of jock halfwits.  No soul in this place at all, it's like drinking in an Applebees.  Crappy wings for 25 cents more than they are worth.  The sort of dive that punk kids won't go into because it's not interesting or dangerous enough and the kind of joint that relaxed people won't go into because it plain sucks. Glad this place exists though to keep assholes away from the good bars.  Pretty sure the entire patronage are one of two types:

Jock/skank who likes yellow jeeps and think Dave Matthews has talent.

Rufnol toting townie losers wearing oversized Pats shirts and give a shit about high school football.

i cannot believe i have not yet written a review for the jeanie, given that i was here 1-3x a week for 2 years.

If you live in JP you have zero excuse as to why you have not yet hit up this fantastic bar.  25 cent wings during football season on Sundays and Mondays, trivia on Wednesdays, and karaoke on Saturdays - don't miss tony c - he's the jeanie's karaoke staple.

it's really the personalities of this bar that make it worthwhile.  almost everybody here is a regular, it seems - if you come frequently enough and you have a standard drink, demitri will have it made for you before you're even seated at a table.  charity does a fantastic job running trivia, and i have yet to encounter a stump trivia jockey i like better.

is the food terrific?  no.  but it's alright and it's reasonably priced.  mmmmm steak tips...  if the rating above was based on food alone this would get maybe 3 stars.  the truth is, you're not coming to the jeanie for the food.  you're coming for the atmosphere, the people, and maybe the karaoke or the trivia.  it's nicer than your average dive, and it's classy in its own right but not crawling with douchebags.  i recommend you see for yourself, but it's unlikely you'll regret it.

I have mixed feelings on The Jeanie Johnston.  During the week it is not that crowded and a good place to grab a beer and relax.  On the weekends I feel it trys to be more than is should be.  I mean Karaoke is all fun and good but not when you are working with such a small space.  And a cover charge?  In JP?  Are you serious?

I would give 3 stars but the TVs in here look like they were stolen from a college dorm room in 1993 so you can't watch games here.  So 2 stars for the Jeanie.

    LOVED this place.

Perfect for grabbing a drink with friends. Awesome music provided by the jukebox, average beer selection, typical bar food (though we ordered mozzerella sticks and there were like four on the plate). But the bartender was absolutely amazing. He was working the entire bar by himself in addition to playing waiter to people sitting down to eat. He was fun and on his game, and we had a great time with him. Saw him at the liquor store down the street after and he gave us a smile and said "We have to stop meeting like this!" He definitely impressed me, and I'm sure the rest of the staff is equally awesome. Great vibe to the bar, would love to go back.

JJ's is a model citizen in the genre of neighborhood bars. The bartenders are all really friendly, the food is greasy but good, the mixed drinks are generous, and the beer is fresh.

It's also open late, making it an ideal nightcap spot.

The only downside is that it's not open for lunch during the week, which is a bummer because the food is better for lunch than dinner and there are usually evening events (which are fun, but not great for meals with people.)

The Jeanie Johnston is a place I end up going when i get dragged by someone else.   I have never gone in because I've wanted to go to there and have never had a good enough time that I have the desire to return. It's there, but like.. there's not too much allure for me.

Count me as another person that didn't know that JJ had food.   I had no idea.  If you really need a drink, you might as well go, and if you're a trivia buff, they've got it on Weds.

If you were to have a figurative blender and decided that you wanted to make a "culture shake" of Boston's various "types of people", you'd end up with something like The Jeanie Johnston.  Either that or some "much happier than how it really is" kind of portrait painted on the side of Section 8 housing.  There are all f'ing types here.  It's like the UN of Boston, sort of.  If the UN had townies doing "the angus young" on the floor and lesbians and black gansta types throwing darts and gay guys making out in the back while the rodeo is on TV, it'd be exactly like the UN.

So, as you might imagine, I kind of love this place.  Me and a Spanish friend (yes, he's from Spain, not just "one who speaks Spanish") closed out the night karaoking Minnie the Moocher last Saturday night.  This was going on while last-call lights were flashing and all types were doing "who-can-I-hook-up-with?" laps around the bar.  See, the bar is a square in the middle of the place which allows for this lap-making behavior.

    All-around, awesome.

Holy crap, this place has food?  I didn't know that.  I also didn't know there wasn't karaoke here every night.  Every time I'm here there's karaoke.  Maybe they never have karaoke and I just like to sing Lionel Richie songs real loud.  Either way, everyone near me wins all the time.

I suggest going here when there's karaoke, which is either whenever I'm there or on Saturday nights, depending on whether you want to believe me or everyone else who reviewed this place.  The line's not too bad and they have a good songbook.  (Caveat: I don't really go there to "sing karaoke" - I want to scream one song, try to get the skanks nearest me to sing "all niiight" on the chorus (unsurprisingly easy) and then go to the next bar.  And by "good songbook" I mean they have Lionel Richie.  If you're one of those hardcore karaoke singers, your mileage may vary.)

This bar can get a little crazy. My last visit was late on a Saturday night (karaoke night + Patriots game). Usually it seems a little more chill. This place is open until 2am, which is pretty late (for  the area at least).

I heard the food is pretty decent here, but haven't tried it.

Do you think all those Patriots players who have signed "Best bar!" have actually been in there?  Maybe Larry Izzo has (they have his jersey hanging up), but Vinatieri too?

It's a townie bar with a few staunch characters in there most nights.  But nothing too bad.

They pour a pretty good pint of Guinness and their food is um...not very good.

Jury's still out on trivia because they seem to have a rotating trivia jockey, but every one of them really take their sweet time with everything and even take breaks. Like it's that daunting.

I like the Jeanie Johnston because they have karaoke on Saturday nights! I go in, have quite a few drinks, and sing songs by Bruce Springsteen till the whole bar is into it. I can totally channel the boss, other than that, darts are cool when the place isn't crowded. The food is mostly fried, chicken fingers mozzerella sticks etc. their fries are pretty decent and cheap to boot.

Let me just say the service here is amazing, on saturday nights they have one waitress, and she is by far the best waitress I have ever seen. She frequently  makes the rounds and doesn't leave you with an empty beer for long. On top of that she has an amazing personality and is super friendly, not that you'll get to talk to her much on a busy night.

I ignored the Jeanie for a long time because of one bad time there like 4 or 5 years ago. That night I was there with a friend and we put about $5 in the juke box and were ready to slide into a scotch bender over some Johnny Cash and Hank Williams when all of a sudden after about 2 songs the bar tender turned off the juke box and put on some crappy house music. When we asked for our money back she just said 'no'. Needless to say, that sucked and I didnt feel like giving the place a shot again for some time.

So, time goes on and last Saturday I checked out the Jeanie with a bunch of friends on Karaoke night. Holy JP new favorite bar for fun with a big group. The place went from dead to packed in about 30 minutes as karaoke started and some serious hard core singers lined up to fire off Journey covers for the rest of the night. Seriously fun to watch. The drinks are really cheap (there is nothing too special on the drink menu, a few specials), the service is awesome and the late night food menu is doable as well. If you're into that sort of thing, they have a dart board and they even sport pretty darn clean rest rooms.

I suggest hitting the Jeanie on a Saturday night if you want to see the good times side of JP and meet some vocally talented townies.

My perceptions of the Jeanie Johnston are, admittedly, skewed by Budweiser and Kamikazes (yes, I like Kamikazes) gulped on one of their infamous Saturday nights. For those who don't know, every Saturday of every week Jeanie Johnston turns into a veritable healing ground for lost, misplaced karaoke souls. And we bring the HEAT. So much so, that the crowd has just recently gotten so overwhelming that--you guessed it--Jeanie's is now charging a cover for admittance.

But what's a miniscule $2 for your own karaoke miracle witnessing??? It's like a rebirth, people: I mean, there's this one guy who looks like he works an office job day-in day-out, and maybe he's a little chubby and bald and the girls don't wanna pay him much mind, but he gets up there and does some Billy Idol "Dancin' With Myself" and you're like "whooo-weee, that man is FOINE" (said with a Brooklyn accent). Or Tony. Let's talk about Tony. Yes, he's tone-deaf, but this man gives the audience all he HAS - meaning his own blood, sweat, and tears, while SINGING Blood, Sweat and Tears! He's a karaoke god-send, a marvel with a microphone, he'll pour some sugar on you.

The crowd here is so eclectic & that's what really makes the night. The performances are varied, the songs range from perennial favorites (Poison "Every Rose Has It's Thorn") to newer stuff (Christina Aguilera can be fun when you're screaming it!). Hell, sometimes someone gets up there and does a country song and you may find yourself on your feet, foot stomping and clapping like the rest of the crowd (though questioning your own sanity).

Bay City Rollers did not have the Jeanie in mind when they penned their anthem and, arguably, one of the greatest songs ever written: "Saturday Night."  But pump the song up when you're shimmying into your tight-ass jeans and stilletto, getting ready to head to the Jeanie for your singing baptismal. It's no reservations, no holds barred. Get healed.

***Note: I'm deducting one star for non-venue like accommodations. I mean, come on, this is PERFORMANCE ART. At least install a 3x3 platform/stage to separate the stars from the audience. Sheesh.

Oh Ms. Johnston, how I love thee.  One of my favorite memories of JP is the day my girlfriends and I trekked down to the Jeanie Johnston to watch the Patriots game after we lost power in my apartment.  Being the silly girl that I am I suggested that we all take a shot everytime the Pats scored.  Bad idea.  The game ended 27 points, and 5 shots later.  This is a GREAT neighborhood bar and the bartenders are wonderful.  Our 'tender that day went so far as to run down the street to the store to buy us red bull when he ran out.  Now that is dedication to the craft.

The JJP loses one star for their pub food, but really, here it doesn't even matter.

This was my favorite watering hole when I lived in Jamaica Plain and I do what I can to keep the love alive.

The fact that I used to be able to stumble home from the Jeannie was not the only reason why I loved it so much. The people who work there are fantastic, they have a fine draft selection, the food is your typical, just-what-you're-craving-type bar food, and the music download jukebox kept me groovin all night. To add to that, Wednesday trivia night is one of my favorite ongoing events in the Boston area, and the occasional Saturday night karaoke is always good for when I'm in the mood to humiliate myself in front of supportive bar patrons.

I actually went back here last night for St. Patty's Day, and I don't think we could have picked a better spot. We camped out from 5:00 till 11:30 and even then we were hesitant to start breaking up the party. We were delighted by a brief performance by some bagpipers, which added some more authenticity to the night -- along with the rounds of Guinness and car bombs of course! And the rest of the time was spent enjoying the crowd, our friends' company, the music and some tourney action.

If you head to the Jeannie and you've got the serious munchies, you've got to get the nachos. Awesome. You can order them with chicken or chili piled on, but sans meat we were still in nacho heaven. The Jeannie also makes a perfect grilled cheese. We could have ordered three more just to satisfy our table.

Something to keep in mind if you haven't been. This is a pub. Although I'm talking about dancing around to the jukebox, I really mean dancing in my barstool or dancing right up against the bar itself since there's not a whole lot of space. But there is plenty of seating for when you do hit up trivia night, or want to pull up a chair to watch some crazy karaoke.
