Mr. Gene's Dog House is both a Food Truck and physical location. This review is for the walk up restaurant on Beekman street. Â I love hot dogs. I look for opportunities in the cities I visit to find a good hot dog. I can't believe I have lived in Cincinnati for 12 years and just finally made it across town to the Mr. Gene's Dog House. Â Located in Cumminsville this is a little out of my normal stomping ground. Â
Regardless, I have now been twice an can say that I am digging it. Â The basic hot dog leaves a little to be desired but the onion Rings and spicy metwurst are top notch. Â In fact, the $2 for onion rings & sauce may have been the best food dollars I have spent in a long time. Â Needless to say, my diet won't let me splurge that often but oh were they good. Â The spicy metwurst with mustard and relish had the right amount of kick and spice to bring me back for seconds.
The stand has both a drive through and walk up window for efficient ordering. Â I would be remiss if I didn't mention that this area of town is a little tough. Â I felt completely comfortable but know that you are still in an urban environment and should be aware of your surroundings.
Cool little throw-back to a different era kind of place. Â It reminds me of a walk-up dairy bar. Â You walk up to the window and order, there is no dining room, though there are some picnic tables out back, or just eat in your car. Â There is also a drive through. Â The dogs are good, and the buns they use are great, good crispy fries too. Â Their standard seems to be a coney, though their chili is not really "Cincinnati style" chili, but more of a typical chili dog variety. Â The Chicago dog was tasty and messy, just as it should be. Â If I lived in the area I'd be a regular, but it's a little out of the way for me. Â Great little retro-style hot dog joint!
Review Source:Mr. Gene's does indeed have a tasty selection of dogs, including hot metts and Chicago style, but it's worth noting that they're a long-time hot dog stand and not a food truck. Although the hours are fairly standard, Gene's a retired police officer who closes up shop when he feels like it and spends his winters in Florida.
