Decided to stop in this place as a change of pace from the usual Chinese buffet we frequent down the road in the old strip mall. I'll be returning there after this visit. The place looks great and the staff was attentive but that is where the good things about this place end. The food was mediocre and they were frequently out of many items during a trip to the buffet. All of this would have been forgivable until I got the check. 2 buffets and 2 waters $23.00.
Way too much for food that is not that good. Try the place down the street. It might not look as good but the food is better and prices are fair.

Decided to come here despite the mixed reviews because, well... I like american chinese food and I really wanted some. Â It started out great when we found a coupon for here on the back of a Kroger receipt before we came. Â After that... the food just didn't hold up. Â Part of the problem may have been because we came about an hour and a half before close, but there were still quite a few people there and still coming in. Â Anyways...
The good: The sweet and sour chicken was good. Â It was all white meat and tasted fine. Â That may have been because it is a popular item so they kept bringing out more, but that was good. Â Also those donuts they have... you can't go wrong with dough a sugar.
The bad: I guess everything else. Â A lot of the food had been sitting out and stirred occasionally. Â For the general tsao's chicken, they just bring out new chicken and mix it with the sauce that is currently in there, gross. Â The rice was greasy, along with the lo mein and most other dishes. Â The pot stickers literally looked like there was a piece of poo inside of them. Â I'm assuming this is from the pot stickers being cooked so much in the warming tray and its what the meat did, but after cutting into the pot sticker i lost most of the appetite for them. Â Besides the sweet and sour chicken there may have been a bright spot here and there, but it definitely doesn't stick out compared to everything else that wasn't good.
I don't care how many coupons Kroger gives me, I don't plan on coming back unless my american chinese food craving comes storming back and I can't live on without eating it... but still there has to be better options..
Truthfully this place did not impress me. Some of the food items were pretty good (specifically the ribs and beef) but other than that it was just kinda...Meh. There is MAJOR food contamination concerns here. Most places will put things like shellfish (specifically for me, shrimp) in one area so you don't have to worry that much. But just about every other buffet pan had shrimp in it. With a buffet where people use the wrong tongs in the wrong dish without thinking this scared me to death. I made it out alright, but I had to pass on quite a few things I would have liked to have tried because they looked contaminated. Their sushi bar for example had tongs that were clearly used for about everything there. Honestly, I'll probably never go back here. It wasn't too bad price wise (about 11 for all you can eat) but when I went back for seconds I realized that I couldn't get anything else because of cross contamination...so there wasn't really a point for seconds.
My advice...go somewhere that cares about food safety.
I don't eat buffets often, but when I got the occasional craving for Chinese, I used to enjoy hitting this place up. Granted, buffet food is what it is..but it did the trick. However, my opinion has changed after my experience today. I stopped by to pick up a to-go buffet, which costs around $8. I entered, and the hostess was on the phone the entire time. I got my food--she was still on the phone. I handed her my card, she ran it, and I was on my way. Unfortunately for me, I didn't check my receipt. Later that evening I realized that she had charged me $21.06. I figured--hey, I will call and get this all straightened out. The first phone call started out politely, until I realized that the woman was telling me that not only did they not have an "to-gos" rung up for lunch, the server who rung me out (who, remember, was on the phone the entire time) said that she didn't ring out any to-go orders. Great. I got pretty frustrated and ended up telling her to forget about it.
Well, then she called me back. I thought, "She must have realized the mistake and wants to make it right." Well, no. She again accuses me of being dishonest because I gave her "2 different numbers" Initially she asked me for a number, and I said, the credit card number? She said "just the last 4 digits." I assumed she was going to look up the transaction that way. She then asked me for another 4 digit number off the receipt. Apparently, she was asking for the same number, but since I gave two different ones (totally a misunderstanding) I must be shady. I tried to explain to her that it isn't REALLY about the money, now it is more about the fact that she is insulting a customer who (thought not frequent) is loyal. I eventually ended the conversation and couldn't believe the disrespect with which I had just been treated. For me, customer service is an important aspect of any consumer experience. As I told the lady on the phone, (who wouldn't give me her name) I certainly won't be giving them any more of my money.
We've been here several times since the Grand Opening. It never disappoints. This is a buffet style restaurant as indicated in the title. We love Asian food. The food is always good with a wide selection & even some American faves for the kiddies. Hey, if the kids won't eat it wouldn't be family friendly. The servers are typically all Asian; they are quiet but friendly & they glide around the dining room as if trying not to bother you. Yet they are there quickly to whisk away a dirty plate or bring a refill. I love them, they are one of the best parts of Asian buffets! I have yet to sample everything on their menu, but as mentioned before I have never been disappointed & I have high standards. Upon leaving you ALWAYS get a smile & a thank you. I love this place!
Review Source:Late Easter Sunday dinner and my wife and I could not find any of our favorite places open. So lets try the New China Buffet in the Newport Pavilion.
Hostess met us at the entrance with a quick courteous smile. She seated us at a clean large table too our drink order and directed us to the large and ample Buffet area. I really do not know anything about authentic Chinese food. But  I do like to sample things that look hot and tasty. Plenty to choose from. We enjoyed it all, two servings plus desert.
My water glass stayed full and the used dishes cleared promptly. Maybe a little ticket shock at $29 including tip. Another plus was the hostess continued to seat folks right up to closing time and fresh hot food kept coming out until every one was served.
It's only ok. Â I eat out at least 4 times a week because of my job and I am always willing to recognize something special and this place just isn't it. Â The store is fairly new and looks nice but their sushi is decent but not great and that holds true for most everything else. Â The things I do like are their Peking duck and their chow mei fun. Â Their Mongolian grill has a major flaw in that they use very thinly sliced meat (to cook quickly) that turn to dry rubber-like flakes. Â I eat at the Tokyo Dragon in Alexandria and they use nice large cubes of meat that can be cooked medium/medium-rare (and tender). Â I took my son to the New China for the second time and he was completely unimpressed. Â For us the Tokyo Dragon or the new place near Sams Club in Florence is a much better choice.
Review Source:I have been to this place more than three times with my friends. Both of us are fans of this buffet. We like the roasted duck and pork ribs there. This buffet does have crab legs, but I am so much into that. I like fried rice and fried noodles there too. Also you can order grills meeting your own needs. The location is in New port, and every time we finished the dinner, we'll go to the nearby Target and Kroger for shopping. The other good thing about this buffet is the price of gasoline at the gas station there is relatively cheaper. If you go there, you can find some coupons on the Internet, just type New China Buffet Coupon in the Google Search bar, and you will find some. Print out coupons and bring them to the restaurant, you can save a few bucks.
Review Source:I hadn't' has Chinese in a while and, after shopping with my neighbor and her daughter at the nearby Target, decided to head over and give New China Buffet a try. Â I was excited that they had sushi in addition to the usual buffet items but the sushi tasted like it had been sitting out all day. Â Not only did it taste terrible, but the variety or lack thereof was disappointing. Â There were California rolls and something with an unidentifiable fish as well as tuna, salmon, and whitefish nigiri. Â I had picked up a piece with Tuna and spit it out. Â The tuna was crusty on the edges from being exposed to air for so long. Â Yuck!
The Chinese food was mediocre at best. Â the lo mien and rice noodle dish were edible but a little greasy. Â In addition to the noodles there was only one other vegetarian Chinese dish, green beans, which tasted on par with everything else we ate. Â My neighbor's daughter tried the pepper steak and couldn't chew it. Â You know the food is bad when a mother tells her 5 year old she doesn't have to eat anything on her plate. Â
My friend ended up eating salad because it was all she could stomach. Â The salad bar was also a disappointment though. Â There was quite a variety of dressings, but only iceberg lettuce, onions, croutons, and cheese. Â No other typical salad fixings were on the buffet.
Bottom line: If you're craving Chinese, pick another place. Â I can't imagine anything could be worse than this one.
This is one of the better "Chinese" buffets in the area. Â While that isn't saying much, i will say that the food is fairly good quality, plentiful and, quite frankly, delicious. Â Standouts include the Rose Chicken...which is absolutely scrumptious. Â They also have a stir fry station where you can get exactly what you want...always a plus. Â With so many items on the buffet, they have to make their money with volume - and there are indeed plenty of seats. Â They're located right next to the new Krogers over in Newport, just off I-471.....you can see it from the highway.

I'm not saying I will never come back here, but I will wait a little while to see if it stays in business, then I might venture in on a Sunday when it's likely to be packed so the food will be fresh - or at least fresher than it was last time.
Going to New China Buffet is a good experience. The food is hot, fresh and tasty. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated and the staff is attentive. I really couldn't ask for more from a buffet. However the take out leaves something to be desired. Everytime I have gotten take out from New China Buffet it has just been a little off. The green beans were over spiced with something...not right, or the chicken was stringy. It is really bizarre because the exact same dish is excellant on the buffet. So I guess I will just have to stick with coming here in person.

Enter New China Buffet: the dining room is very clean and modern. The buffet area  features five gigantic tables that encompass half of the restaurant. Five tables?! I was excited to try a variety of Asian offerings. Sadly, you won't find that here, regardless of "China" being in the name.
The majority of the food at this buffet was American. Not Chinese American, but pizza, french fries, stuffed mushrooms, even apple pie. A third of the food was what you'd expect to find at a Chinese buffet, but very little of it was appetizing.
Chinese staples like sesame chicken were half the size of other buffets and were very chewy. The stir fries didn't look at all appetizing. I was intrigued by the sushi buffet, but the varieties were just California Rolls cut into different shapes. There was a Salmon Roll that used canned salmon instead of smoked, and I'm pretty sure the Tempura Roll was just deep fried cream cheese with spicy mayo.
A few items were good though:
- Rice noodles
- Crab Ragoon
- Egg Roll & Spring Roll
- Thai green beans
- Cheesey Crab (although I question how this is Chinese)
I was rather disappointed with the lack of Asian food at the buffet, and finding things like the rice noodles placed next to cheese sticks and BBQ ribs.
Disturbing, non-Chinese food I saw:
- "Chinese" spinach: Â mozzarella and canned spinach
- Weenie Tots / Pigs in a Blanket
- Fried Catfish
- Fried Bananas (Avoid! These tasted awful and were hard. Bananas get mushy when cooked... how did this happen!?)
- An entire table of Jello puddings with various fruit or marshmallows
- A full salad bar, like you'd find at Frisch's
- Stuffed mushrooms, sauteed mushrooms, and diced mushrooms (yes, all these in three different bins)
- BBQ ribs, fried ribs, and ribs on a stick
Most of the customers here were eating food that was not Chinese. If you desire Chinese, don't start at one end and work your way around. The Asian food is located at the table furthest from the door, and you'll find a few random things (like rice) scattered around next to the Mac n' Cheese.
If you like Golden Corral, you'll like New China Buffet. If you're like me, you won't be back a second time.

I always think the good mark of an ethnic restaurant is how many of its own ethnicity does it attract by way of customers. If you see people of Indian origin in an Indian restaurant, or Mexicans in a Mexican eatery you can be pretty certain the food is 'the genuine article', and tasty with it.
Sadly, there was no sign of an Asian face sat at any of the tables here at New China Buffet. No surprise really, the food is the usual mix of disappointing Chinese fayre, fries and pizza (pizza??!!) found at far too many places across the country.
I'm sure it fills the desires and bellies of those people looking to simply 'eat big' for a low price, the kind of people who maybe migrate here when Golden Corral or Ponderosa have become too familiar to them. For me though it falls short on almost every level where 'taste' is involved. The food was either too greasy, over sauced or under-heated to be of any repeat interest. (Although much of it repeated on me later in the day)
Plus, it has the whole Newport Pavilion problems working against it. A poorly designed development which completely fails to cater for pedestrians and puts drivers in peril thanks to all of the vehicular exits being located on blind and/or sharp bends. The architects should be ashamed of themselves.
Wow, so much hate for an actually solid Chinese buffet. I didn't run into anything that the others have spoken of. I got exactly what I wanted from this Chinese buffet.
New China is a large middle section full of items to eat and then a few seating areas around it. Atmosphere is your typical Americanized Chinese eatery - ceramic cats, scrolls on the wall, you know the drill.
What I look for from my Chinese buffets are A) variety of items and B) quality of items, and I was very satisfied on both. Was it mind-blowingly good food? No, not even close. But was it still delicious enough for me to get seconds? You bet your ass it was!
Items that stood out to be was a tasty egg roll, Crab Rangoon and surprisingly fresh and delicious green beans. Other items like the orange chicken and the sushi were fine. Nothing amazing but definitively worth checking out. Â
Where they really shine though is there stir-fry bar. You pick anything you want (tons of vegetables including baby corn and water chestnuts), chicken, beef or shrimp (again, you get to pick how much you want) and then your sauce. They cook it up on a grill right in front of you. That was awesome! Well done New China Buffet.
And their ice cream dessert selection was awesome! They had 6 different kinds, including my fav. cookies and cream, and you just scooped what you wanted. I actually wish they had some toppings for them (a little whipped cream would have been nice), which I know sounds a little greedy, but dammit, it's a buffet - greedy is what you do. Still, a great surprise.
Their service was also solid. Granted, all they needed to do was refill my soda since I got all the rest of my food, but dammit if they didn't do it well.
My dinner was about $13 (with soda but without tip), very reasonably priced for the amount of food I got. I was happy and would certainly go again.
Somehow the husband managed to talk me into coming back here, despite our depressing experience with the food last time. He was in the mood and there are really no Chinese buffets around that we were aware of. While it still wasn't good, it definitely was improved from last time. Some of the better dishes: coconut shrimp, crab legs, salt and pepper chicken, green beans and the mei fun. Sushi is still completely undelectable and the hot and sour soup was really disappointing (despite how easy it is to make it!) Don't go out of your way to get here, but if you happen to be at Target or Kroger in the plaza and are starving, it's a pretty cheap buffet.

Â For a Chinese buffet, this place was not all that impressive. Â The decor is new and nice. The servers were friendly and attentive. Â Also I think that my lunch (without ordering a soda) was only around $7, so I wasn't all that disappointed. Â
The food was pretty basic for most Chinese buffets. Â They didn't have anything that really made them stand out from others. Â I did like the Rose chicken. Â I also had the chicken and broccoli, the green beans, and some kind of pepper beef thing. Â I was trying to eat low carb and healthier, so I avoided most of the fried items, as well as the rice and noodles. Â The dumplings were mediocre. Â
In summary, I wouldn't specifically recommend someone go out of their way to come here, but for the price, I would probably eat here if I were going to Target instead of some fast food joint.
A lot of Chinese buffets are crap. New China Buffet is not. In fact, it's one of the better Chinese buffets I've been to. It definitely beats Empire Buffet, which gets a lot of hype. The price for lunch is very reasonable, but a little high for dinner. With a soft drink, it's about $13.50 per person not including tip. The fried dumplings are very good. They have something called Rose Chicken that is very good too. The egg rolls are okay, if not a little greasy.
It's really taking a beating on Yelp, but it's pretty good in my opinion. It's not a gourmet restaurant by any means, but for a Chinese buffet, it's got my vote.
I don't really want to eviscerate NCB, but it's really unremarkable in every way.
Honestly, if you've eaten at one Chinese buffet, you know 95% of what you're going to get. Really its that tiny extra 5% where they need to prove themselves. It's unfortunate there's not a lot of variety between them, because I have to sound really nitpicky and focus on the tiny things that make each of them different.
NCB's service was pretty average, and their selection was also pretty average aside from some unexpectedly premium ice cream. None of that "vanilla - chocolate - swirl" option here - no siree. They also have Cookies and Cream, Mint chocolate chip, and a few others.
Also of note are their crab rangoons are in like a pita shape (odd?), and they have really interestingly shaped and decorated sushi. My roommate dug the pizza, so it seems thats above average for a buffet. I found the seasame chicken to be unbearably sweet, and the chicken skewers were pretty untasty. But being a buffet and all, nbd. Just go grab something else.
Chances are you already know what you're getting at a chinese buffet. If you're in the area, this will fill that void. But if you're really picky, there are better options out there.
I really wanted to like New China Buffet, but sadly, it fell short.
It's location is very convenient off I-471, in the Newport Pavilion development that now houses both a Kroger Marketplace and Target. Since it's near big box retail, the parking options are ample.
Inside, space was equally abundant. The interior is shiny and new, and there are two very large dining rooms. They have both tables and booths, which I always appreciate. Both the hostess and our server were friendly, and I got similar smiles from other staff.
The buffet is centrally located between the two, with a hibachi grill, sushi bar, ice cream cooler, and several askew buffet rows filled with both Asian and "International" cuisine.
Unfortunately, the food itself is where things started falling apart. They really had more from the International cuisine selection than Asian-- an entire area for salads, plus pizza, quiche, macaroni & cheese, potato skins, cheese sticks, chicken tenders, gelatin squares, various puddings, ice creams, and so on.
Diversity might be a welcome addition for picky eaters if the Asian selection was equally ample and tasty. However, the buffet lacked some very basic staples (no honey, bourbon, or orange chicken?!). Other basics like egg rolls, chicken with broccoli, and fried rice were done poorly, and despite being in the middle of the busy lunchtime rush, a majority of the food was lukewarm to cold. Even great food struggles with taste when it isn't kept at temperature (and it also can make you sick). Lastly, the sushi bar, which presented a nice selection, was filled with browned, off-putting vegetables.
Some highlights? The Crab Rangoon were pretty tasty (and hot), as were the spring rolls. I also liked the Sweet & Sour Chicken, but I was amiss for finding the coordinating dipping sauce, an essential part.
In the end, lunch for our family of four was less than $25! Which, I guess is an impressive deal, even if I only consumed water and appetizers. Meh.
I rarely come across take out food that motivates me to write a positive review. I was excited to see this restaurant open recently as there is a desperate need for a good Chinese place in Newport. Ive had casual Chinese and for me it was terrible.
That being said, I have been to New China Buffet 3 times now. The first time I went for the buffet and the other times was just carry out. The buffet... for me... was not extremely impressive. However, I have received some very good food via takeout. I noticed a lot of the reviews on this place focus on the buffet... I want to encourage people to give this place a chance for takeout. I order this evening and their credit card machine wasn't working.. so they gave me my food for free! That to me is how you get repeat business.
Mongolian Beef is excellent! I highly recommend... Hunan chicken was average but hands down better than Casual Chinese.
Don't count this place out for carry out!
