Ok for a quick small sandwich. Â It is better than Subway, but still expensive for what you get. Â Papa Roux in city market is by far a better deal and cheaper. Â 1 lb. + sandwich versus a 1/3 of a pound. Â Small appetite vs big appetite for around same price. Â Just depends on what you want.
Review Source:Yay for places that list their calories on the menu. Â It is greatly appreciated. Â The hubs and I both liked our sandwich. Â I ordered the mediterranean and really liked the flavor despite it not having any meat. Â It was filling but not too filling that I couldn't eat a cookie too. Â Yum. Â Don't leave without grabbing one of those.
Review Source:Potbelly delivers downtown and that is so handy. Â There are surprisingly few places in Indy that will bring lunch to your place of employment.
I was on a once-a-week Potbelly run for a while. Â The first few times were fine, but it quickly went down hill. Â Delayed deliveries, missing salad dressings, wrong sandwich toppings, bread soaked with with hot pepper oil, forgotten side dishes and always being out of those damn irresistible sugar cookies started to take it's toll with me and the rest of the office. Â Finally, the last straw came when my chicken salad sandwich arrived with no chicken salad on it. Â I'm not even kidding.
I took a month or so off when I was treating a co-worker to lunch and she wanted Potbelly. Â I think everything with the order came as requested, but the quality just wasn't there. Â It could have been my attitude, but I didn't enjoy it at all. Â
In their defense, Potbelly have always offered to make it right. Â A refund. Â A free lunch. Â Whatever, but there comes a time when I just want my lunch. Â I want it to arrive quickly and taste delicious. Â Even if I have to pay for it.
As far the sugar cookies, they are amazing. Â They are huge and wonderful and I want to marry them. Â Something in them gives me a sad tummy, though. Â (I can narrow it down to the cookies because there were times when I just had a cookie.) Â They're so good, though, it's totally worth having to take poop at work. Â That's saying something right there.
ETA: Â The owner did reach out to me after this review. Â I bumped them up to 3 stars based on how willing they are to correct errors.
For the record, I won't accept offers made due to poor reviews. Â To me, it questions my integrity.
I prefer to eat at locally owned restaurants when I can, but I realize that I should be more opened minded because several of the chains are very good these days. Â
Potbelly is very reasonably priced and my sandwich was very very good. Â The other sandwiches I saw looked good too. Â I also very much liked the ambiance at the restaurant. Â I would definitely give this a try if you are looking for a more fast food sandwich shop along the lines of subway or quiznos. Â This place is better than either of them and is priced right.
Compared to subway, I'm definitely a fan of Potbelly. It's something that makes me run for it whenever it's being catered during company meetings. A colleague recommended me the grilled chicken with cheddar and I got it with peppers, mayonaise , tomatos , and lettuce. I wish the sandwich could be a little bigger, but it's decently filling when you're not terribly hungry.
If I'm starving though, I could easily take down 2 sandwiches at least.
For a chain this is fantastic. If you come in during lunch hour they have someone at the door taking orders in line so that by the time you're up front the sandwich is made and ready to be dressed. The hot peppers are amazing, but watch out, they mean hot. The price on the sandwiches are pretty good as well. This will be a regular place when I need a really quick lunch.
One more interesting point. During lunch they usually have live music. Crazy right?
Clean, friendly, and nice service behind the counter. Â I got the chickpea veggie salad and asked for little cups of their spicy brown mustard instead of dressing and they were all too happy to oblige. Â The salad is massive so beware. Â When you spend the $6 on it, you get what you pay for...and lunch for the next day.
Review Source:This is, hands down, the best place for a sandwich in Indy!!
I first experienced Potbelly's in West Lafayette, where I fell in love with the hot peppers and *toasted to perfection* bread. Â Today I still go for the hot peppers (cant go wrong with any sandwich but I'll take the Italian on white bread, please) but have also fallen in love with the chocolate milk shakes and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
The staff in Indy is friendly and does an incredible job of helping you to get the most out of your lunch break... I am always pleasantly surprised with my short wait, despite the number of other hungry customers in line.
Bonus points for having calorie counts on the menu and more than your standard Lays potato chips. Â Extra bonus points for supporting local musicians- makes lunch hour feel a little more like happy hour in Indianapolis.
I've had a crush on Potbelly since one graced the streets of my undergrad town of Madison, WI. Sure, I had been to Potbelly before, but the one on State Street set me up for a life of longing for a toasty turkey sandwich, Italian sub or a freshly made milkshake.
Thus, it shouldn't come as a surprise that when I found myself in Indy, hankering for a meal mid-afternoon on a hot-as-hell day, Potbelly was a welcome respite. And this particular location doesn't disappoint!
-Friendly employees
-Conveniently located in Monument Circle
-Outdoor seating (it was so hot outside thus no one was on the patio)
-Clean resto
-Nice variety of chips
-Sandwich calorie info on the ordering board (both helpful and mind-crushing)
My crush on Potbelly continues...now I have a boo in Indy.
I LOVE Potbelly. Anytime I'm in Cincinnati for work, I'll make a special trip to their UC location to get one of their yogurt fruit smoothies (I love those little sugar cookies they put on the straw) and the italian sub (can't remember what they call it). I love those hot peppers on anything. The cookies are good, too. So, I was really excited to find out that we had a Potbelly in Indy, finally.
Sadly, this location is hard to get to, especially for lunch, unless you work within walking distance of the circle. Pretty much the only time I eat here is when I need a quick bite to eat on my way to a Colts game from a friend's parking garage around the corner. They do a good job with the sandwiches, but take a while with the smoothies (don't all Potbelly's take forever making the shakes & smoothies?).
The main part I can't stand about this location, though, is that they have a restroom, but won't let you use it, even if you are a paying customer. It's really frustrating. Yeah, they have a little antibacterial gel squirter thing by the counter where you place your order, but sometimes people just have to use the restroom or would rather wash their hands in a real sink. I've even been there with kids & a group of 7 people. We all bought something to eat...and STILL they would not let the kids use the restrooms. We had to walk around the corner to use the restroom at a different restaurant that didn't even care if we bought something. It's ridiculous.
Potbelly's is great! I come here whenever I'm in the mood for a sandwich... much better than competitors like Subway or Jimmy John's. The bread is so delicious, I think that's what I like the best about it. When I'm feeling like a splurge I'll get a cookie too because they are so amazing. You really can't go wrong with what you order here, I usually get something with a lot of fresh veggies, delicious. If you're in the area, I highly suggest you try this place out, you'll fall in love just like I did. My whole family agrees!
Review Source:Potbelly's is yummy! I always get the vegetarian with mayonnaise and pickle and it's a good choice. Sometimes it can be crowded , but at least your sandwich will be tasting great. The workers can be rude and act like they don't want to be there. Â Overall though you should give it a try!
Review Source:My beloved City Market was empty, and so I headed west for dinner (mid-shift "lunch").
Potbelly sandwiches are not culinary revelations, but they are tasty and, well, cheap! It was something like $4.70 for the standard size "A Wreck", fully loaded with lettuce and tomato and peppers and onion & c. Having been Goosed, I cannot begin to get excited about the actual meats/cheeses (salami roast beef turkey ham swiss), but I can assert that they (and the flakey toasted bread) are far superior to the likes of, say, Subway. And Subway represents competition at the price point, soooo...gotta dig it.
Glad to see a potbelly's on the circle. It's good to have a nice hot sandwich option within walking distance of work. I was getting sick of all my coworkers always wanting subway and jimmy johns.
I love Potbelly's so 4 stars is basically automatic as I have never had any issues with this location and absolutely love the sandwiches. Sometimes they have live music in the corner which can be relaxing during your lunch break. I must say the only reason this didn't get the full 5 stars is because they do not have the option for the "Bigs" at this location which is the larger sandwich. They do, however, have additional meat on the pizza sub as opposed to just the traditional pepperoni. For that reason I give it a 4.5 star rating. Â It would be 5 stars if they had the Big's. Â It's unfortunate that you can still be hungry after eating something so tasty.
I am native to Chicago so to find a Potbelly here made the wife and me really happy. Â Unlike the 2 star reviewer, I actually feel as though this lived up to the chicago hype. Â I was interested to learn that the reason Indy doesn't have the "bigs" and a few other things is that the upper-ups make sure the location can hack the normal stuff before letting them do all the upgrades. Â Well, suffice to say, I totally expect the menu to expand a bit here in indy pretty soon because I feel as though they did a great job. Â I pick potbelly over JimmyJohns and Subway any day. Â Parking can be a bear, but it is totally worth it. Â
The bathroom is through the emergency exit though, which is a little strange. Â
If you have yet to go to a Potbelly and you like sandwiches, then you owe it to yourself to swing by the circle and get your Potbelly on.... get a cookie to finish off your meal, its worth it.
this is one of those places where the 3-star "A-OK" description seems to be a perfect fit.
perhaps the reason i only think of Potbelly as OK is that it just didn't quite live up to the hype. Â
decent sandwiches. Â decent crusty bread - i generally opt for the multi-grain. Â good variety of toppings. Â decent cookies and other desserts (they have a pretty good dessert bar that i have tried but wouldn't rave about). Â
staff is decently friendly, and they try to move the long and busy lunch-crowd lines through at a quick pace.
i find that the sandwiches taste better with extra cheese on them - unfortunately, asking for extra cheese will cost you. Â
although they do toast their bread and have fresher toppings, it is pretty comparable to jimmy john's and quizno's. Â i think potbelly comes out ahead in a head-to-head competition with jimmy john's, quizno's, and subway - however, despite winning, i wouldn't run to potbelly with any amount of excitement. Â if i need a quick and cheap sandwich, this is a fine place to hit up.
Some of the most glorious years of my life were as a sandwich jockey at Potbelly when I was in college. I had never had a Potbelly sandwich before I started working there, I'm chalking that up to not working in the Loop. Potbelly is the King of all of the sandwiches.
So get this, are you watching your weight? Trying to gain weight? Into bold tastes? Into hot and spicy? Into soup? Into big salads? Potbelly has something for everyone. They even have secret underground sandwiches (which I have brought to your attention) that aren't on the menu, but can be made with the multitude of freshly prepared ingredients at their disposal. Potbelly isn't like other sandwich places. Every morning at 7, some wonderful people go in and start slicing meat & cheese. preparing the chicken salad and tuna salad fresh, and readying those beautiful meat monsters, the Italian and A Wreck.
If it was socially acceptable, and I wouldn't die from an ulcer, I would eat Potbelly hot peppers straight out of the jar. You can buy these flavorful babies by the gallon NO FOOLIN'! Potbelly hot peppers are the boss of some type of secret giardiniera racket that makes all other giardinieras look like something you'd scrape off of your shoe in the subway.
So what do I get at Potbelly? Chicken Salad sandwich on multi-grain with added cranberries, red peppers, and non-fat vinaigrette, in addition to the topping choices already offered. If there isn't a line, and you're feeling really feisty, ask them to put some roast beef plus extra ounce of meat, hot pepper oil, and hot peppers on a piece of foil and send it through the oven twice. Your mouth with thank you. Don't be afraid of the pizza sandwich. It's worth it. I dare you to go to Potbelly every day for lunch and work through the menu. If you get delivery in Indy, sometimes the sandwich doesn't arrive in the best condition, FYI.
I'm not a sweets person, but all of the shakes are real and made right in front of you for maximum tastiness. The cookies.......the cookies are addicting.
There are five decorative items in every Potbelly restaurant. You better start going every time you can so you can figure this out! And bosses, I'm sure everyone would love you more if you got Potbelly catering for your office.
To me, this Potbelly is much more than a quick lunch spot. The staff is SUPER friendly - warm and toasty (just like their sandwiches). You can tell the employees get along well, as each time I come in, I get that friendly fun vibe from behind the counter.
There's a reason world-renowned chefs like Grant Achatz speak so highly of Potbelly. Quality with convenience. Since I've moved from NYC to Indianapolis, I've had a difficult time finding that combination.
I really love the TKY with hot peppers. And am always so surprised at the value. Especially for such quality meat and vegetables. Where else can you go for $3 or $4 dollars to get such a quality sandwich? Â This location also has outdoor seating -- and occasional live music.
And lunch-goers do not fret - the line usually takes less than 5 minutes.
Well, damn.
I am a Potbelly devotee. My husband and I are known to travel to Lafayette or even Chicago for a PSW fix. When we got a shop in Indy, I thought, "Bam! The food gods have spoken!" Â Little did I know they were speaking pig latin. Cause the Indy PSW just doesn't cut it.
Maybe it was the time of day (8 pm on a Thursday evening--at which time the circle is pretty dead, and so was PSW), maybe the sandwich maker was new, maybe it was the full moon. I don't know. I just know I did not the Potbelly's sandwich I know and love.
I ordered my usual: smoked ham and swiss with the works minus oil. It's my regulah. It's what I get always and so I know what it's supposed to taste like. Places like Potbelly build their brands on a winning formula, so when the formula is off, it doesn't equal the same product. Â My sandwich was lackluster at best, the bread was falling apart, the hot peppers seemed to be different than the ones I am used to from the Chicago stores (am I wrong or are the Chi-town hot peppers diced in to a relish-type spread vs. Indy's giardiniera style?). I didn't even finish half of it.
I ordered the oreo shake and it was good.
The other thing I have to mention is the service was really off. We got there at 8, an hour before the 9 pm closing time. We sat outside (there was one other couple there when we got there, when we left, there was no one else outside). One of the guys made his feelings known that he was not happy about our sitting outside, though I can't figure out why: we left no mess and bussed our own table. Also, my husband wanted to use the restroom and was told there isn't one. I didn't check if there was one, but is that even allowed? I thought all restaurants with table seating had to have restrooms.
At this point, I'll never go back to the Indy location and the two stars are for...well, the oreo shake I suppose.
I have a SHAMEFUL addiction to Potbelly's veggie sandwiches. I confess that I was not just a little bit excited when I heard this Chicago-based chain was landing on Monument Circle. Like I said: shameful. Tasty, delicious shame. I can't explain it. The place is decorated in country kitsch, the workers are suspiciously friendly and there is nothing obviously special about the veggie sandwich. But I even confess to kind of enjoying when the guy playing acoustic guitar there did a rendition of a Green Day song. I know, I know -- SELLOUT! My 16-year-old punk rock self would kick me in the ankles with her steel-toed Doc Marten boots. Admitting to liking a chain restaurant and a Green Day song?! What has become of you?!
Review Source:UPDATE:
The last few times I came here, they have new staff and the service is cold and unenthusiastic. Also, the sandwich maker messed up the grilled cheese sandwich. How could that be possible?
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I am so thrilled Potbelly has finally arrived in Indianapolis. Delicious warm toasty bread - the sandwiches are far more superior than other sandwiches from the chain chops. My family is big fan of Potbelly. We rely so much on Potbelly when we travel in the US, we always try to find a Potbelly location whereever we go for quick lunch or quick dinner. My family love this place!!!
About this particular location - this is by far the smallest one that I have been to. However, there are always enough seats available. Located in the Monument Circle, its location is convenient to those who work or have activities in the area. However, it is a little hard to go there if you just want to grab a sandwich. You have to find a street parking (which is very limited) or park at the Mall parking garage and walk about 2.5 blocks. The service is always friendly too.
Our favorites are turkey and Italian. ALWAYS ask for hot peppers if you like to spice up your sandwich. They have grilled cheese too for those picky eaters. They have vegetarian sandwiches too. Chocolate malt shake is the best . Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookie is our favorite. If you like Orangina, Root Beer or Cream Soda - you can get it here. I hope that this location start selling the "Big" size.
Finally, Finally, Finally in Indianapolis!
This place just opened in  my building a few weeks ago, and already it has become an office favorite. Think of it as Subway on steroids, Jimmy John's with more variety, or ... well ... good.
If you're wondering what to get, try out the Wreck (it's a signature item), don't skimp on desert and go for an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, and try an oreo mocha shake.
Just don't complain to me when you fall asleep at work in the afternoon!
It's the bread! Â The multigrain bread here makes all the difference. Â The taste and texture are just superior to any other sandwich place. Â I have had Potbellys in Chicago and I'm glad there is one in Indy. Â I suggest the Pizza Sandwich. Â It was delicious. Â The smoothie tastes more like a shake, very yummy. Â Does anyone know if they deliver?
ps
One thing that did NOT make sense was the Payton Manning Sports Illustrated cover on the wall. Â It was after Chicago lost to the Colts in the Superbowl.
Meh... Don't get me wrong, this place is "A-Ok" but it doesn't really seem that much different to me than a Quiznos or Jimmy John's. I'm probably spoiled by sandwiches from a little place near 25th and Delaware. I popped in today to see what the hype was all about. It was fairly early and this place was busy! Some dude took my basic order on a tablet thing. Then i was able to add some toppings at the counter. I had the Italian with hot peppers. It was a decent hot sandwich. The peppers were the best part, but the whole thing didn't dance on my palette like other sandwiches from other places have. I'll have to try some of the other offerings at some point when I am in the area and do a follow up review.
Review Source:Who would become the prodigy offspring of Jimmy John's and Quiznos? You knew this...or you wouldn't be reading a Potbelly's review!!
Twas one of the best aspects of going to Chicago...now...without the trip to Chicago!
Potbelly serves up delicious sandwich varieties in a clean shop on the southeast end of Monument Circle (plus a surprisingly spacious little patio). I had forgotten how good Potbelly sandwiches are. They also offer the ability to have some extra bread cut out...so you're not completely stuffed post meal.
I had a delicious pizza sandwich/sub. Only thing...just like Quiznos...ya gotta wait for it to toast...and the line can be a little awkward during a super-busy lunch hour. Speaking of...you might come prepared to take your sandwich to-go; seating isn't what I'd call plentiful.
They have lots of varieties and combinations...so if you love Jimmy Johns, Quizno's, or both, give 'em a try. I am not, by the way, advocating the complete dismissal of either of those two sandwich places; while I like Potbelly...sometimes nothing else but Jimmy John's will do. Fortunately, they're not to far from each other~
Having gone to school within walking distance of the original Potbelly's in Chicago (LPHS class of '89 shout out!) I was excited to hear that my favorite sandwich shop was opening here in Indy. Â I don't usually like cold-cut sandwiches, which is one of the reasons why I always loved making the trip down Lincoln Ave. Â The toasted subs were always warm with soft bread on the inside, and a perfect little crunch on the outside. Â
I was not disappointed with my trip downtown to check out my old fave. Â The Italian was just as tasty as I remembered, and the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie was a perfect finish to the lunch. Â Hopefully, success in downtown will lead to other locations opening closer to home.
One night after The Wife moved back from Chicago she suggested we go to Potbelly for dinner. My response was something along the lines of, "Wtf is a Potbelly?"
Stunned that I wasn't familiar with, like, the greatest sandwich shop in the known universe, duh, and saddened by the fact that chain had yet to add a link in Indianapolis, she spent the next four years extolling the virtues of Potbelly at every opportunity.
Here's the skinny - in 1977, a couple starts selling sandwiches our of their antique shop and names the enterprise after an antique cylindrical style of oven. Fast forward 20 years and they sell the concept to a guy who turns it into a 200-shop chain. They mostly sell baked sandwiches with good ingredients and killer giardiniera relish, Zapp's chips, and cookies and shakes. And as of May 3, 2011, they are open for business in Indianapolis.
After four years of hype it was going to be hard to impress me but my first Potbelly impression was strong. The sandwiches are good (I think. When you put giardiniera on anything it just tastes like something with giardiniera on it.), reasonably sized, and cheap for what you get - I walked out of there with dinner for two for less than I'd spend in Subway.
I can't weigh in on whether Potbelly is the best sandwich shop in the known universe, but it's definitely the best option in the context of Subway, Jimmy John's, et al.
