Hey Sorry Silverglade and Sons, but I'm going to have to demote you one star for your customer service. There are only two people who work here (two women, both blondes, one with long hair and the other with short hair) who I have had continuously pleasant exchanges with. Even in the throes of their busiest, craziest  lunch hours, these two ladies manage to keep smiles on their faces and treat everyone (no matter how rude) with respect. The other staff, not so much. When I politely inquired about the soup situation, I was literally growled at by the man behind the register. Another time a staff rolled eyes at me when I asked if I could order at the espresso bar -- and it was in the morning AND I WAS THE ONLY CUSTOMER! I get that it can get busy, I get that people can be annoying - but maybe you shouldn't be in the food service industry if you can't handle that because half of how I base my experience at any restaurant is about how I'm treated.
Props to the two women, though. They are the saving grace of this places customer service and the reason I will continue to come back, keeping my fingers crossed each time that I don't have to interact with any other staff aside from them.
I was really disappointed when I stopped in this week. Â I ordered one of the sandwiches, but asked them to omit the cheese. Â He told me that they couldn't do that, because the sandwiches are all "premade." Â WTF? Â That's the whole point of going to a deli and getting a sandwich - they are supposed to be made to order. Â Guess not here! Â
After that, I decided to get a salad, and walked over there but was informed by the staff that the salads were "closed" - even though I could see all the salad fixings sitting there. Â I don't think I will be back anytime soon. Â I would up going elsewhere for my lunch.
This is the most solid lunch spot in the entire city. They can satisfy any craving. That is saying a lot! You want fresh baked brownies at 4:00? Done. A huge salad dressed with literally anything you can think of? Done! Chicken/Egg Salad? Lasagna. The list goes on and on and on.
You walk into this monster of a building and are kind of confused on what to do. To the far left is a "bakery bar" where you can find bagels, cakes, cookies, muffins, coffee etc. In the center is a "salad station" where you can get either a signature salad or make your own completely from scratch (which is the way I like it).
Now for the best part, straight in or to the far right is a deli counter, but it is more than that. This counter like I said has anything and everything in it. You can choose from pre-made wraps, sammis, or again make your own from scratch. Another plus is that if you are running late, you know you can always stop here and get a healthy, home made lunch to fuel you for the rest of that crazy day!
Bottom line the reason I love this place is because everything is home made from the ground up with the freshest ingredients. They don't skimp on quality or quantity. Stop by and see for yourself!
After my last day of jury duty service, I stopped in to Silverglades on 8th for lunch. The deli sits on the corner of 8th and Sycamore. They have another location in Findley Market but I don't think the lunch sandwiches and salads are offered there. It is a little confusing when walking into the location on 8th. A made to order salad bar is off to the left side, while the sandwich ordering counter is to the right. In the middle is the cash register used for all purchases.
It wasn't all that crowded, but it was after 1pm on a weekday. I walked over to the sandwich counter and didn't make it past the first item on their menu before knowing exactly what I wanted. The Renaissance sandwich features Silverglades signature walnut grape chicken salad with lettuce, tomato, and onion on a croissant ($5.99). A bag of "dirty" chips and a fountain drink can be added for $1.75 more, which I gladly took advantage of.
The sandwich was prepared within a few minutes time and came with a massive dill pickle spear. After paying for my selections I filled my cup with fresh brewed tea and found a seat near the salad counter. After the first bite I knew that I was going to love this sandwich. The chicken salad is ground up very finely, but you can definitely taste the grape and walnut flavors even if their textures are missing. I'm always a fan of chicken salad on a croissant, and this croissant was one of the tops I've had. All of the toppings were fresh and the pickle was good too. I'm not downtown for lunch often, but if I were this sandwich would definitely be in my regular rotation.
I really wish this place had better hours. Â I don't work downtown, but spend a good deal of time there in the evenings and weekends. Â I wish they were a place I could go for a quick healthy meal on a Saturday or Sunday night!
Their food is excellent! Â The sandwiches are unusual and freshly made. Â You can make a customized salad. Â They have a rotating selection of soups. Â I recommend making your own salad! Â The Bob-A-Que Sandwich is good, but a little too much bread for my taste. Â
My complaints about this place... The salad bar is often closed, even when the restaurant is still open. Â Service is a mixed bag- We have twice come in close to closing and been met with very hostile looks and curt service because we were holding them up from finishing their cleaning and getting home. Â Another time, service was awesome. Â
If I worked downtown, I think I would be a regular here. Â Hope that someday they decide to stay open for dinner hours!
I think I like this place more than I don't. Maybe 3 1/2 stars would be a better rating. I certainly found my salad (pick 5 w/no protein) and sandwich (The turkey one with Lightening in the name) perfectly tasty and fresh. I was unaware that I needed to place my sandwich order at the deli counter and then proceed to the register. Instead, I ordered and waited only a few minutes before I put two and two together and saw the sign above the deli counter saying "Order Here".
Anyways, one thing that kinda bothered me is that they use Styrofoam cups. Oh well.
Service was fast. There was a steady stream of business men that came in and out while I sat there.
I think I will be back in the warmer months at least to sit outside and people watch.
I usually write novels for reviews, but this one needs no novel. I give them 4 stars simply because of the Renaissance Chicken salad on a croissant. LOVEEEEEEE this sandwich and I'd knock over anyone who got in my way in order to eat one. Sorry, but it's true. You don't mess with a short girl and her food, especially not the chicken salad when it has grapes and apples mixed in. See what you did?? Now I want one and I'm nowhere near there. Dang it! Go there and have one for me!!
Review Source:Unfortunately downgrading my review to 3-stars for Silverglades because the service has gotten slower and there have been a couple missteps on the food on my last few visits. The lines have been shorter too, which makes me think that maybe others are getting frustrated with similar issues.
I'm not sure if they've cut staff, but despite the relative lack of a line, it takes a while for someone to get around to taking  your order. Check out is still efficient, but the overall vibe seems less friendly than before.
Two visits ago, they were out of some of the ingredients for the BBQ sandwich I ordered and on this visit, they had the sandwich available that I ordered, but it was burned. Really burned. I would have sent it back except that I didn't have time to wait for another unfortunately.
I've had enough good experiences to hope that this is just a bit of a slump, but they need to step it up on service and quality to get back to 4-star range.
Okay, I was torn on this review because I do love me some Silverglade's Renaissance chicken salad with a big, beautiful pickle and a tall glass of their heavenly sweet tea, BUT I'm often turned off by the attitudes of the staff. I frequent this location a lot because it is ridiculously convenient to where I work, so I can say with certainty that more often than not I feel like the staff is rude. I know it's always busy, but I feel like anything can be done with a smile, and I'm a sucker for customer service. I hate feeling like I am being an inconvenience when I am ordering, which I often do at this location. I'd also say be prepared to wait, because if you come during a non-rush time (I like to eat later in the afternoon) even though you may be the only one in line and you are making eye contact with the person behind the counter--you will wait. Also, the food is pricey for deli food, but it is a higher caliber. So, like I said I'm torn. I would definitely suggest going and grabbing a sandwich and some sweet tea, but just be prepared to be underwhelmed by the service.
Review Source:The food here is ok. I mean, it's good but there is simply nothing to write home about. Everything about this place is just simple "Meh." The breakfast is decent & decently priced. The lunch is decent and too expensive for what it is. There are really only two things that this place has going for it: 1. The baklava, yes, as odd as it sounds, I think their baklava is great. 2. It's just right down the block from where I work.
Review Source:Silverglades on 8th is yet another downtown lunch option to which I'd been oblivious for too long, probably because it's tucked over in a section of downtown that doesn't have a large concentration of storefronts.
But it's a pretty good one. Â
Silverglades, an offshoot of the Findlay Market standby, falls into a category that a number of delis around here seem to occupy: Â It probably won't do any one thing that will set your world on fire, but they seem to do a wide-ranging sandwich menu consistently and decently. Â Some of the ingredients seem a little off, like the mediocre grocery-store salsa on the "Louisiana Lightning" sandwich (which incidentally doesn't remind me remotely of Louisiana, where I lived for years). As others note, there is also a small selection of hot diner-style lunch fare. Â
Counter service can be of the chaotic, big-city variety that only the insiders seem to get. Â As a first-timer, I walked up to the display counter, observed that a cluster of people were standing in no particular order, and just hoped the situation would resolve itself. Â Luckily, it did. Â If it's not crowded, on the other hand, you might have trouble getting anybody's attention behind the counter. Â Once you do, though, everybody's friendly.
The attractive, high-ceilinged dining area is a nice place to chow down. Â I was surprised to learn that they've been here only seven or eight years, because this location has the broken-in feel of a neighborhood institution. Â There is also a market area with beer & wine, cheese, & other specialty items.
An old-school deli on the Northeast part of downtown serves up excellent sandwiches and a solid breakfast.
Quality: 4.5 stars - The menu is very dynamic serving old favorites with new concoctions. Ingredients are high quality but not tops.
Service/Ambiance: 4.0 stars - The inside of the building is quite clean with plenty of seating. The employees seem a bit reserved but get the job done.
Value: 4.0 stars - Â $6 for most sandwiches offered is a very reasonable price.
Additional Notes: They also sell 6-packs of Great Lakes and Christian Moerlein as well as a nice wine selection (useful if you live downtown); you can't drink there, they'll let you know that.
Bottom Line: Â This place borders 5 stars but it isn't there; it's a very solid deli form top-to-bottom just not a masterpiece...
Silverglades on 8th is my new favorite place downtown. They are one of the best places to eat lunch, but what really makes them #1 for me is the fact that they're open "late". By late I mean they are open until 7:00pm Monday-Friday, which is actually surprisingly rare. This is especially handy for me since I work until 6:00pm.
Their food is absolutely top notch. It's all Boar's Head meats and cheeses, some really outstanding sandwiches, paninis, and wraps, and some of the best "deli selections" you can find downtown like pasta salads, casseroles and such. Also, soups, several types of salads, yogurt, a nice selection of snacks, and smoothies. Everything seems to have been selected or prepared with quality in mind. Honestly.
Also, you can get milk, butter, and eggs there. Oh, and beer. They have a good beer selection which includes Great Lakes and my favorite beer: Christian Moerlein OTR. I challenge anyone to find another place in the CBD where you can get all that after 6:00pm.
The fact that all this is in one place and it's open late enough for me to get things on my way home from work boggles my mind and I love them for it. If you've never been, definitely pay them a visit.
A decent place to grab lunch downtown, Silverglades is kind of a deli family dynasty in Cincinnati. In addition to this location, they have a storefront at Findlay Market (where they've been for 80+ years), one on 4th and Plum, and another out on Clough Pike. Nice selection of hot comfort food like meatloaf and mac-n-cheese as well as a variety of wraps and sandwiches. Â The Mediterranean wrap is a standby, but with the fresh bread and sandwiches made to order, it's all pretty good.
