food was bar food. nothing bad, nothing good to say/ the almost famous chicken strip were hot and fresh and seemed almost homemade. but they were just ok, had the mega nachos too and they were borderline terrible. but the place is cool, music was good. its a small place, chill. close to the fieldhouse.
Review Source:We stopped in to watch some football. Â Surprisingly it wasn't as packed as I thought it would be and we were able to find a table at the bar. Â I thought the place was cute. Â It's small, sporty, but not cheesy, clean, friendly, and they had really good food. Â I got the tenderloin and the onion straws and totally devoured every bite. Â Both the tenderloin and onion straws were crispy, not too greasy, and the tenderloin was just how I liked it; juicy and not pounded out thin like a frisbee. Â We didn't get the wings, but I could see and smell them from the next table over and they smelled amazing. Â
Towards the end of the game I did see some of the douchery that has been documented in other reviews, but I think for the most part we lucked out during our trip and I would definitely go back.
Worked through lunch today, so I stopped in for a burger right around 5 PM. Â I've been here a few times before, but not for quite awhile. Â The memory of the burgers brought me back.
Was I afraid that the burgers might not be as good as remembered? Â Nope, not one bit. Â As soon as I asked for a menu, the bartender told me that the Pigskins appetizer is "really good" (it is) and that their burgers are "legit". Â Indeed. Â The burgers *are* legit in every sense of the word.
I had the Naptown - bacon & swiss with a side of ranch dressing. Â I think the fries must have changed at some point. Â I usually don't get fries with a burger....yeah, I know. Â Weird. Â But I could have sworn that they used to have home fries here...now they are just standard run of the mill fries. Â But the burger more than made up for it. Â Juicy, perfectly cooked, oozing with swiss cheese, and bacon hanging off of the edge of the bun. Since I missed lunch and was really hungry, the burger literally had no chance. Â I ate it in record time, paid my tab and made some room for the after work / pre-Pacers game crowd.
Great food....started with  Pigskins (pulled pork, melted cheese on potato skins). Loved them. Also had excellent chiclen strips appetizer, great and so much both could have been a meal. Great tenderloin sandwich and fab Philly Cheese Steak. Wonderful food and Heather was an excellent wait person/bartender. We will definitely go back-love that they are open on Sunday too...
Review Source:I went here with Nicolette M., fellow yelper and eliter, and was neither jazzed nor bummed by my experience.
+ : Good selection of beers, including domestics (yuck!) and locals (yay!)
+ : Lots o' TVs and options of what's on. It's not all baseball or basketball, or it wasn't when I was there.
+ : Quite a large amount of space for such a small looking place
+ : Well located just off the main downtown bar scene but with a little bit less dry-humping and a little more bro-ing out.
- : SMOKING. (June 1 can't come fast enough!)
So really, aside from the smoking, it was quite a good Saturday night pit stop. Once that's fixed up, I foresee the possibility of my going back, especially if someone else is paying (thanks, Nicky!)
Coaches has always been good to me. Â I'll go on a lot of Thursdays and it's $3 for any pint. Â They also have a free poker tourney too. Â Im a Bears fan so I really don't like the Vikings stuff all over, but Coaches is a nice little bar. Â If you're looking for just a pub without a ton of loud music, then go to Coaches.
Review Source:This is a place you can amble up to the bar and enjoy yourself for hours, whether it's a hopping Friday/Saturday night or a quiet afternoon. Â Although I know many who only end up here at the end of a Friday or Saturday night, regulars get treated very well in this place, making it a great everyday bar.
For a quintessential bar that is nonpretentious, the food is actually fairly good. Â The Pigskins are my absolute favorite, and on the very busy nights like during the Big Ten tournament, when they decide to use a shortened menu, I almost want to cry if they are not available. Â The enchiladas and the chicken strips have never failed me; the pretzels are not quite as amazing as those that I dream about at Rock Bottom but are among my short list of favorite pretzels in Indy; and the pan-seared ahi may not seem to fit in with the place but is amazing. Â
Sadly, despite the numerous, numerous times I've been to this place, I can't say anything about it's meals. Â After all, I come here to socialize not to eat. Â Eating was usually incidental to my trips here. Â
The patio outside is small but makes for variety if you are a regular here. Â You, of course, still can take advantage of all of the great drink specials and food while getting to focus more on conversation and surroundings rather than the tvs all set to sports stations. Â It's a great trade off.
Get to know the bartenders and waitresses. Â Make this a place to fill up some time between concerts, shows, games while you are downtown, the place to catch your favorite tournament game, or your place of last call. Â It's well worth it.
Finally, I found the place where all my high school bullies hang out! Â
My last visit ended with people doing that bottom-lip biting air humping dance on top of the bar... woof.
I suppose this review is more about the clientele that the bar attracts, but atmosphere is important to me.. This place just isn't for me.
Coaches pros & cons.  Pro:  good daily drink specials. Con:  smoking allowed.  Pro: great food & service.  Con:  gets crowded.  Pro:  wonderful hummus appetizer garnished with diced cucumber, tomato, red onion and olive oil  and served with lots of warm pita bread points.  Pro: a truly awesome Pesto burger with pesto and provolone.  Pro: Coaches cheesesteak sandwich consisting of thin slices of roast beef topped with jalapenos, BACON & cheddar cheese sauce on a toasted French roll.  Con:  I could easily eat two of these but I hope I never do. This is a truly perfect sandwich in my humble opinion. Anyway, the pros by far outweigh the cons so despite the smoke I will continue to frequent Coaches........frequently.
Review Source:I can understand why Byron warned people about staying away from Coaches when it's game time if they don't want to watch the game. This place has been the unofficial place to watch Notre Dame games for the past couple of years.
DJ Metrognome plays here on Tuesdays, I believe. He's a great hip-hop DJ that turns out large crowds (he opened for Lupe Fiasco in Bloomington recently). So maybe those who feel like sardines here would do better to go during the week. A decent-looking and young crowd turn out strong on Thursdays--and during ND games!
Honestly I'm rather shocked that this place hasn't been posted yet, but that's ok I take pride in all my firsts.
Coaches holds a weird spot in my mind. It has good food so I like it for lunch, but it's personality come night time really just makes me angry, so I don't know what to rate it on the star scale, so I'll just do three and call it even.
As I said the lunch is pretty good, relatively cheap and tasty, served hot and with little delay. The service is marginal, but really it's one of those places that you really don't care much about the service anyhow. I tend to go with the pita and hummus for lunch, when you go here you'll no doubt wonder who would order such a dish in such a place, but let me assure you that the stuff must be laced with crack because I can't get enough, somehow it's more than just hummus and pita, they serve the pita piping hot, lightly coated with olive oil, it's great.
Moving on to the night life scene here, I hate it. Imagine a small local sports bar, just a local style watering hole, small place, friendly bartenders...someplace like Cheers. Now, take that pleasant thought and blast, I mean, just blow your ear drums out BLAST jukebox music and live R&B. You cringed...I know you did, made weird contorted faces and thought how terrible it was....that's Coaches at night. Simply foul.
I do still come here for lunch, but I really won't even consider it for a place to get a beer. And by the way, if you're not an Notre Dame fan, you should probably stay away during Irish football games.
