This is now my "go-to" place for a more upscale date night.  The food is consistently delicious and well-prepared and there are always enough steak and seafood offerings that my husband and I can always find something we like.  Best of all, the staff and service is perfect; they make you feel welcome and well-cared for without being pretentious or overbearing.  It has a nice ambiance; tables are just far enough apart that it has an intimate feeling but also casual and relaxed.

Not bad atmosphere, ordered burgers... been here 1/2 hour hmmm... Wait- here they are!
Tanquarey & Tonic and my lovely wife made the wait well worth it until I tasted the burger and...I would have waited another hour for it! Excellent! Cheddar and bacon may sound mundane bit it was cooked to my liking and the flavor outstanding.

Had a really good meal here yesterday. Wonderful steak, mashed potatoes, salad. The service was unusual in that I think they were training someone. So it was a little hover-y. Like too many people coming over and doing stuff at the table. But I won't hold that against them. Fab food!

This place stays consistent with great food, attentive service, nice ambience, always  modern and comfortable. The owner works the front end, makes everyone feel great.
Lunch  on Saturday was great fishtacos , blackened, and the best cob salad in the area.

Went for Sunday brunch 4/1/2012. Service was slooooow. We got there around noon and couldn't get out until 2 pm. I ordered the pork loin special sandwich w/ fries. The pork was so dry I nearly choked on it and there was no seasoning. No taste to it at all -- there was a dab of mustard but it was such a stingy dab, why bother, it was just a tease and the only flavorful thing about the sandwich. It tasted like dried out leftovers from Saturday night's pork entree. My companions ordered reubens, and found the corned beef to be very tough. None of us could finish the weird french fries.

Then there is the clam chowder, which we each ordered. Very disappointing -- it wasn't bad, but nothing to get excited about and there was this underlying sweet taste to it -- sherry maybe? Whatever it was, it was not a very good note.

The service was oh so slow. We managed to get coffee when we finally got waited on, but had to wait an hour to get a refill -- our waiter vanished! The chowder came quickly, but it was but a distant memory by the time our entrees arrived. Between chowder and entree, our waiter was nowhere to be seen, no progress notes, no "how are you doing?" -- nothing. We had to flag down a different waiter to get a coffee refill. A long time after we finished and our table was cleared, our waiter finally put in an appearance. We asked him for the bill. Then, 20 minutes later, we found the hostess and asked her to get us our bill. Eventually, we were able to escape.

This was our first time at Old Post Tavern, and it will be our last. Pity, because the chairs are comfortable and the acoustics are good and it's a short trip from Norwalk. It was fairly busy with families -- probably because it's comfortable and a great location. Certainly not for the food! And we will never understand why it took two hours to get a bowl of soup and a sandwich.

One of the best meals I've had in a LONG time.  We met up here with a few friends from out of town by their recommendation.  Yes it's expensive - but it's Fairfield, what do you expect.  The martinis were great...STRONG.  We tried a couple of the raw bar platters and everything on them was amazing.  My girlfriend and I opted for the salmon as our entrees and were both pleased.  The boys got steak and scallops and they both said they were outstanding.  My boyfriend said the scallops were some of the best he'd ever had.  I would definitely - no correct that, I WILL definitely - be back the next time my friends are in town!

Gruff unpolished bar staff. Especially the butch woman bartending happy hour on Thursday 3/29?  Even her nice Latino male colleague rolled his eyes and seemed to dislike her poor rude service she gave us.  I was taken by local friends to happy hour.  We were a table of 7. Only two others in bar and we BARELY got service.  Food was more than sub par. Service n friendliness even worse.  Then a band loaded in and the drummer started to tune his drums by CONSTANTLY hit his drum over and over while tightened the screws around the rim. SERIOUSLY???
    Forget this place.

Sunday evening, averagely busy, poor service. 20 minutes before we got offered a drink, 40 minutes to get two hamburgers. Our waiter never once checked back with us and the three times he did visit (initial drinks, food order, check), he was surly. I had to ask the barman for our second round of drinks, since our server was ignoring us... even then no apology (barman was great and very responsive, kudos to him!). Burgers were not good - smelled peculiar... ate half, took the rest for the dog. Left a $2 tip. (I did personally tip the barman though... plus he earned OPT their two stars).

    Not what it once was.
Service is down. An inexperienced & unpolished bar staff.
No longer a spot I am enthusiastic about & not really an option my friends and I consider anymore. Shame.

I went here recently with a couple of co-workers. I split the reuben sandwich with my co-worker, who had the crabcakes - we each had half of the reuben and 1 small crabcake. The crabcakes were really good, but the reuben left something to be desired. The wait staff was pretty friendly and attentive, but I'm not sure if that's because there were only about 10 people in the place. If you just want a quick appetizer and a couple drinks, then this is a cool place.

I've been here twice and both time have been delighted. The shrimp croustini is an absolute must!!! Fantastic wait staff- delicious specials, good wine, nice atmosphere, great downtown location.

Nice menu (if a bit small), friendly staff, and the tuna tartar is super. Whoever is working the grill does an excellent job getting a char on the meat, yet always cooking to perfect doneness.

    OPT is A-OK!

I come here rather frequently, as it is the most American, Burger-friendly and REAL place of the 5 or 6 restaurants I routinely frequent in Fairfield... and good LORD, there are LOTS now! OMG

Have had most of the dishes on the menu, they are consistently high quality and well prepared, I mean,  it ain't TOP CHEF, but it's definitely well made, the chef is culinary school trained and several cuts ABOVE what I normally associate with a Tavern as bar food, or Tavern fodder. So the name is a bit misleading.

This is a popular family oriented restaurant with a large bar area attached, so you can have it have it both ways. The Bar and the more formal dining are well-separated, so there isnt a noise problem and the bar menu is similar, but more on the small plate side

I was surprised to see that many prices had actually been LOWERED when i just was there, the week after the Halloween Nightmare Snowscape Thingee... I don't recall seeing that... well... EVER...

Anyway, its a nice clean place, well decorated and inviting, has live music and a totally full house on Thursday and is becoming a community destination, which is pretty gratifying to see after the previous two  ( or is it three?) restaurants in this space were demoralizing and demoralized hell holes.

Old Post Tavern is unique in Fairfield in that it EXCEEDS expectations by virtue of its quiet persona and freindly, non EuroTrash waitstaff.

if only Morrissey was serving the food...
saw it on CT bites, in top 10 best burgers, was intrigued.  got <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> coupon glad i did.  lets get to this...
ordered the shrimp wrapped in prosciutto with roasted pepper sauce app.  what was served was 3 over done shrimp with a piece of prosciutto layered over the top and then seared down.  you took one shrimp and the whole piece of prosciutto came with it. FAIL.
ordered french onion soup, the kind of cheese you will choke on.  this pretty much must be the reason why the french hate us.  mediocre. FAIL.
ordered lobster ravioli, small portion, it wasn't bad it wasn't good the side of spinach with it was underseasoned and bad. not worth the money. FAIL-y
ordered burger...the train had pretty much derailed by now and the yelp review had already been formulating in my head.
burger...A1 sauce in it? meatloafy? wrong. FAIL.  fries, well wait a second.  the only shiny beacon of hope, thank you fries for saving Old post tavern.  crispy , salty, fresh.
I must mention one thing though that allows me to keep a soft spot in my heart was the lilting sound of Morrissey kissing my earlobe.  I love you Morrissey i don't so much like you Old Post Tavern, except for your fries. stick to that.

Run in the opposite direction!!!  One of the worst dining experiences I have ever had!!!  Arrived on a Saturday night around 7:30.  Not too busy, but they took forever to get around to ask us for a drink order.  When the entrees were served, only 3 of 4 came out.  Thought it was because they didn't have enough hands to bring them all out together.  No such luck.  My entree - filet mignon - nothing too complicated especially for a steakhouse - came out the first time about 10 minutes after everyone else's meal.  Way undercooked - virtually raw.  Sent it back.  Came back about 15 minutes later in the same state - way too rare - actually it was hardly changed from the first time out.  Sent it back again and then after about 5 minutes - canceled my order since the rest of my party was almost done with their meals.  Not much effort to rectify the situation or mollify an annoyed customer.  Then, to add insult to injury, the busboy dropped a plate on my back leaving a big greasy stain on my shirt.  In addition, my daughter had a hamburger that tasted like a meatball that had gone bad!!! I am not sure they could have created a worse dining experience if they tried.

Meh... Nothing bad... But nothing to make note of either. It was there. Drinks were not strong and food was nothing to write home (or Yelp) about.

Went once and already became a fan. Finally took the family for daughter's birthday dinner. Had vegetable salad, mussels, capaccio, 2x cheeseburger. Everything delicious; hamburger meat was very tasty and cooked to perfection. Huge size including superb fries. Vegetable salad truly refreshing included some unknown ( to me at least) veggies and tasty dressing.  Great addition to downtown Fairfield. Fairly priced! Definitely going again!

We have been here multiple times and each time it is good. Have sampled most of the menu, my only real complaint is that they tend to overcook the fish... I hate hot, well done, dry fish... Just annoying. I struggle with how to define this place as it has white table cloth type food, but I prefer the bar area or outside... A bit too stuffy (but this is FF)

Burger was delicious. Service was good.
Not quite a tavern. The place looks pretty good.

Delicious. I went there for the first time on a Tuesday. As luck would have it, that is half-price wine night. Any bottle of wine is half price. That is not the reason to go though. The food is good, simple, well presented - as I said in the lead: delicious. I will say that the warm layered tomato app was a bit different. Not bad, my guest simply said he would have something different next time. Caesar salad could have used some anchovies. The planked salmon was delicious and the vegetables were done just right. The scallops were gone in a flash so I have no doubt they were enjoyed.

Perched next to the Community Theater in Fairfield is the charming colonial public house whose unassuming moniker with the word "tavern" in it  shouldn't conjure images of the dark and dingy in food-goers' minds. Quite the contrary, the natural light and bright, reserved interior rivals the beaming quality of the service staff.  Great for everyone as a brunch destination, whether it's a mother-daughter pre-shopping weekend on Post Road, a larger Saturday morning meet and greet brunch with friends, or a calm, fulfilling family brunch outing

If you arrive on a sunny morning, kick-off your meal with a Bellini, let the friendly service serenade you with the day's specials, and watch the weekend shopping crowds (and Post Road traffic) flow by through the large sliding windows that make up the street side of the dining room.

The PEI Mussels make a nice appetizer to start with; they're delicious and steamy hot--and the leftover sauce is quite possibly by design, made for the fresh sliced bread that shows up at the table.  The steak sandwich tender yet made to the temperature of your liking and the sauteed onions atop of it really balance out the flavor.  Can't go wrong with burger selections and the fries are solid, salted, and not overdone.  The Lobster roll is also fantastic----served on the same style of traditional cut roll that you'd get at the famed "Lunch"/ "Lobster Roll" restaurant in the Hamptons---except you don't have to brave the 3+ hour drive to Long Island.

Burgers are $10.50, the steak sandwich $12.50, PEI mussels $10.50.

Shrimp bisque was a bit salty. and the burger was large and seemed to be made from scratch, but it was a bit too garlically for my taste. The sweet potato fries on the other hand were cooked well and tasted great.

The house wine was absolutely wonderful and the apple crisp desert with ice create was sinfully delicious. We could not get enough of this desert.

My wife and I just loved the wait staff. It is probably the best service and wait staff in Fairfield! Extremely friendly and helpful and attentive really looking to please.

I will return, but order perhaps the fish or steak dinner. I could not help but to spy on the table next to me, attracted by the wonderful aromas and visual appeal of their varied fish and steak dinners that they had ordered.

The Old Post Tavern is a gift to downtown Fairfield! The dining room is beautiful yet inviting and the bar area encourages patrons to pull up a stool and stay. Being a self-proclaimed "foodie", I have now eaten here several times and have enjoyed each and every meal. Among my favorites: the chef's homemade clam chowder (the best I have ever had!), clams casino (a nice sized portion, too!), the cedar plank salmon, linguine with white clam sauce (whole clams in there!) and the Dover sole - so tender with just the right amount of lemon. The wine list is well thought out with price points for all budgets and a very nice choice of wines by the glass. Even the beers on tap are thoughtful, changing with the seasons. On one recent visit I enjoyed a dessert of warm blueberry/apple crumble that was so good it was sinful - though my children ended up eating most of it! The staff is attentive without being overbearing and they all seem to know the menu and specials inside and out. Check out the Old Post Tavern - this place is here to stay!
