I think the reason I'm writing about the creamy whip in October is because I miss it dearly. Its so close to my art studio, and when driving home, I always pass it with 'what ifs' dancing in my head... a chocolate soda today? maybe a chocolate dip top? yes, you guessed it. I'm a big chocolate fan.
Putz's is one of my favorite creamy whip's in town. There isn't one thing on the menu that isn't good and its so affordable! Even their slushies have flavor instead of just being sugar water.
They are known for having these huge old creamy whip machines from the 1920's that churn the whip a bit differently, allowing more air, but I'm more contemporary and like the newer machines because they make the frozen concoction smoother.
If you're on a budget but want to treat yo' self, whether it be with a foot long hot dog
( for some reason these taste amazing here even though they aren't grilled and their buns are always moist and fresh), or a chocolate malt you can't go wrong.
The owners are really friendly and will remember you and your name, even though 3 seasons will pass before they see you again. I also like the Americana feel and the fact that in the 70's they wrote to the government and got the highway builders to move their on ramp going north, so that they could keep their location.
I would say my only  complaints is that its cash only, but if you can find some spare change in your car, you can still afford a hot dog or a sprinkle cone! And for the record, "Putz" is a family name, they also had the street named after them and its pronounced with a long u as in "Putt Putt".
Nothing I love more than stopping here after work to grab a really cheap footlong chili dog for dinner. The chocolate shakes and ice cream flurries are also top notch. I have to give them credit. I've been coming here for 20 years now even when I had to ride my bike several miles as a kid to get there and the quality has never changed.
I heard a disturbing rumor though that Putz's will soon be no more when I-74 is expanded in the next few years. SAY IT AIN'T SO!!! :(
This summertime oasis is so legendary that the street name was changed to match it. Â Stop in and get a footlong cheese coney and a peanut butter/chocolate shake. Â Or try a mett, or any of the scores of delicious ice cream treats. Â The soft serve machines date from 1954 and 1955 respectively, and have made fantastic ice cream here this whole time. Â
I'm not from Cincinnati, and I know that everyone has their own favorite creamy whip, but this is big daddy. Â This is the king and the queen of dairy whips. Â Bring your kids, or your girlfriend, or your parents, or everyone you know, for goodness sake. Â Get a tasty cold treat to eat at the picnic tables under the trees. Â Remember what summertime is all about once again.
I couldn't resist this place simply based on the name. I arrived at 7:15 on a Sunday evening, the place was bustling, there was still plenty of parking & the lines moved super fast. I noticed a sign saying "cash only" I headed over to the gas station next door & got cash out of the ATM. I returned to order food, the menu was huge. I knew I wanted something cold & wet...I ordered a black raspberry freeze & a cheeseburger. I didn't have to wait long for my food. I got home to find my burger was still hot. My freeze was tasty, my only issue being the ice wasn't crushed small enough & kept getting stuck in the straw. I got to the bottom of the cup, removed the lid & found a yummy mix of ice cream & ice at the bottom of the cup. I'll go back but ask them to mix my freeze for a bit longer next time.
Review Source:Have you never heard of Putz's? That's because they don't advertise. How is it then that there is always a line at the order window? Because it's amazing.
Putz's fills that nostalgic "remember when we use to go to the drive'in and get ice cream" void for Cincinnati. It's a little bit out of the way, but well worth it. Plus, it wouldn't be a drive-in if you could walk there, right?
This week's special was a 12 inch coney and a milk shake for $6.60. I'm not a coney person, but it's a fair price and I can appreciate that the hot dog seemed pretty decent. Really though, we normally go to this place after we've already eaten.
Go here once and it will call you back all summer.
This place is a family owned and operated creamy-whip that has been running since before I was born. After hearing time and time again, "YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO PUTZ'S!" We decided to make the trip there. Nestled on the corner of an intersection this place was busier than half the restaurants around. They have food, pop, and delicious ice cream treats! Anything you could think of they had.
We ordered an orange glacier and a cherry dip top. The glacier was just okay it was mixed. Ice cream people you know what I mean right? My boyfriend likes to scoop the icee and the softserve together himself but he said it was still good. The dip top was just okay, it was too thin! Usually they dunk it and it gets super crispy. I don't know what happened. Either way Putz's is a great place to stop and get a yummy treat!
OMG! Â A family institution! Â My family has been going to Putz's since I was about 3 years old... and that was a long, long, long time ago! Â We even pulled up here in a limo on my Grandpa's 60th birthday... We told everyone that Tom Jones was in the limo....
As I child I love the Ice Lady and Man... Think slush puppy with soft serve ice cream on top and a candy face... It was blue-tongued goodness! Â Today I can't get enough of their blizzards! Â Always plenty of candy throughout... no 3 inches of plain soft serve at the bottom.
It is always busy, but the line moves fast. Â They have a decent amount of seating, which rarely is completely filled. Â
The only downside is that it is kind of hard to find... Hidden behind a mini-mart off the Montana I-74 exit. Â But, its definitely worth the hunt!
This is an AWESOME place!!
Really, it's been around since the 30's and they have a great ice cream menu. It's got a great reputation and this summer will be a destination for me at least once. Cincinnati is full of great places like this.
There are small tables outside and I've never tried any of their food but my standby for ice cream joints is a chocolate malt and they make a mean one.
This summer, the whole family set out on a quest to explore the wide number of creamy whips in the Cincinnati area (or whippy dips, depending on what tickles your fancy).
We had, admittedly, been to Putz's before. It's location near Mt. Airy Forest is pretty convenient to our downtown abode. There is very little better than a warm summer evening at the park followed by ice cream.
But I digress. Putz's is old reliable and has had a great, long history in Cincinnati. I highly recommend going to their page and reading more. Overall, it's nothing fancy, but yet, it's exactly what you want. A great variety of food and frozen treats. Friendly staff. Great prices. Big portions. A collection of benches and picnic tables to sit at. It's familiar and comfortable and wonderful.
My favorite treat? The pineapple shortcake sundae. Super moist yellow cake, vanilla ice cream, and a heap pineapple topping. It's amazing. A close second? The turtle sundae. It's big and it's loaded with toppings.
Let's just say that Putz's made an appearance more than once on our quest!
Anything that's been around since 1938 is guaranteed goodness. Located right off the Montana Avenue exit on I-74, Putz is known for a lot more than ice cream. The cheese coney beat out Skyline and the other big names in the Best of Cincinnati contest. I had to order it, and I agree. The bun is soft, the chili sweet and the cheddar cheese is so light and fluffy. If you're here, get a coney first then get ice cream!
Speaking of, I've had a few treats here and they've all been delicious. The Turtle Sundae is layered with vanilla soft serve, caramel, and pecans. The chocolate shake is creamy, refreshing, and my go-to item. What makes this creamy whip so good? Peek through the window and see the giant, silver ice cream machine. It's the original from the 1930s, churning old-fashioned soft serve.
Price per person: $2 -$4
Cash only.
forget Graeters... FIND THIS PLACE! Get a shake, they are the creamiest shakes you've ever had and if you get anything with fruit in it, its all fresh. Â No syrups, just real fruit. Â My husband had a black raspberry and it was the best I've ever had. Â Also got a Coney dog with cheese and onions, it was good but I could have used two! Love little spots like this... but its a stand so there is no in-door seating. Â Either your car or some picnic tables outside but who cares when you're happy.
Review Source:If there is one thing that Cincinnatians love as much as their chili, it would have to be soft serve ice cream. Each neighborhood seems to have at least one free-standing ice cream stand called either a creamy whip, whippy dip, or something similar. Two weeks ago I found myself at Putz's Creamy Whip, one of the most famous of all the local shops. The business started way back in 1938, and though they have moved locations a few times, the current location has been in service for around sixty years.
According to their website's history page, the construction of I-74 in the early 70s nearly forced them out of the current location as the highway was supposed to come within three feet of their back door. The owner's were able to convince the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration to move the highway nine feet back to save the location. Later, in 1987, the street the store was on was renamed to Putz Place. So this ice cream stand is legendary for many reasons.
Following the lead of my wife's family, I ordered a medium size Krunch Cone with vanilla and chocolate swirl ice cream. Krunch was a combination of sprinkles and some sort of crunchy bits similar to what you would find in the chocolate of a Nestlé Crunch. Now there is a good idea, I wonder if I could get them to dip this into chocolate after covering it with krunch. Even without the chocolate coating this ice cream hit the spot.
What can I say "I LOVE THIS PLACE"!!!!!!! Â Not being from Cincinnati and not ever having ventured to the west side (Is this considered the west side?) I had never heard of Putz, or Putzes as I always call it. Â A co-worker of mine introduced me to this little gem tucked along Highway 74. Â I believe its considered Mt. Airy or Northside. Â It has all the charm that a small town Ice Cream place is supposed to have. Â I am so happy that the same family has continued to operate it after all these years. Â
The soft serve ice cream is great! Its a great cheap lunch place during the day. Â All the food has I've tried has been good and priced very well. Â Don't go expecting to spend a fortune. Â
They don't have indoor seating but there is a large grass lot and picnic tables. Â If you are looking to re-experience the little ice cream shop that no longer is open in your community I highly recommend coming here. Â It has all the nostalgia of a small town ice cream shop.
Check this place out on a hot summer day or for lunch!
To start with, I don't think the name will ever make me not laugh.* I know, it's off of Putz Place, so it makes sense, but still...
Beyond the amusing name, I can't help but really enjoy this stand. I had heard about it for years living in Cincinnati, but never got over here until a few weeks ago. Now I see what all the fuss is about.
Off the Montana Ave. Exit lies a stand for ice cream. You can't miss it if you just drive straight (and then see the giant crowd of people outside.) This is ice cream done right. They do sundaes and shakes and floats and their own sweet creations.
I shared a sundae with my gal and it was perfect. Homemade ice cream, fresh toppings. I couldn't have been happier.
The line is long. Real long! It does give you a moment to think about what you want to order though. It's also cash only, which is kind of annoying. Just a warning for you folks headed there for the first time (like myself).
A great summer spot for sure! I can't believe I went this long without going.
*For those not sure why I'm amused, Putz is a Yiddish word that means, "An idiot." It was a common phrase in my household, especially when dealing with my brothers. And so, I giggle.
I love ice cream. I love local places. Hence, I love Putz's.
There is just something about this place that makes you feel like you are 5. So much so that I ordered a small cone with sprinkles. After I inhaled that I moved on to one of my favorites: The Chocolate Peanut butter Shake. I was interested to see how their shake would stack up to the multitude of others I have had over the years. It was made with their soft serve that is so creamy and delicious it should be illegal. It was probably the best Chocolate Peanut butter shake I have ever had.... and I have had a lot of them.
I was worried this place would not live up to its hype, but I worried for no reason. I am glad I got there today since they close for the winter tomorrow. But not to worry, I will be there too much for my own waistline come next summer.
We've lived on the west side for about 12 years now and our summer starts and ends with the opening and closing of Putz's. Everyone has their favorites but i truely believe that they have the best soft serve in town. Great service and mix of people at the picnic tables to chat with. they don't offer the variety of flavors that other place do but when you do Chocolate and Vanilla so well who really cares. Both are great but together... brilliant.
Review Source:When I was a kid it was a pretty big deal to be taken to Dairy Queen for an ice cream parfait. Â In fact, I have few memories of even being taken. Â We were poor, but that wasn't it - it was because Dairy Queen was supposed to be special. Â Sure we had ice cream at home, and we had nuts and sometimes there was a jar of fudge topping in the house, but none of that mattered. Â
I haven't felt that way again until today, my first visit to the beloved Putz's Creamy Whip. Â It's a tiny little joint literally just off I-74, about 10 miles from downtown Cincinnati. Â I expected the parking lot to be packed but there was a heavy storm rolling in and folks were taking their whips to go. Â
We ordered a hot mett coney with cheese (delightful) and a cheeseburger (average) so that we could pretend that we'd eaten a decent lunch before we ate our "Par-Fay"s as Putz's calls them.
Within a second it was Dairy Queen all over again, but better. Â The ice cream was better, sure, but the ambiance was better too. Â A bucolic little parking lot just off the interstate? Â You bet your life it's better. Â I'll not soon forget standing before the front of a massive summer thunderstorm, my skirt fluttering in the hot wind and a Par-Fay ready to eat at hand.
I kept driving by this place on the way home, laughing at the name, and telling myself that some day I would stop. Purportedly "putz" is Yiddish for the male member, but I've always understood it to mean, "schmuck," or, "jerk," so it intrigued me that someone would name their ice cream stand, "Putz." But thanks to the fine reviews here, I understood that it was a family name and I knew I had to go.
Lo' and behold, it's purty dang good.
Don't let the location dissuade you (Putz's is right behind a Circle K next to  I-74) - this is a great place to cool off with a summer treat or enjoy a delicious footlong coney. Friendly service and plenty of picnic tables to relax at in the shade. Don't let the summer pass you by without stopping at Putz's.
My oh my oh my.... 5 stars... well as you know from my previous review, I had my Cincinnati chili coney inauguration at Skyline Chili for lunch. Â I ran across Chuckie G's review for Skyline (He's a Cincinnatian living in San Diego) and PM'd him for some must hit spots. Â He told me to go to Putz's Creamy Whip for their foot long coney and something called a Blue Iceman... I'm thinking... I had chili dogs for lunch, don't know about having another one for dinner. Â So, I did some research on the place... established in 1938... This place has been there for 79 years? Â Now I'm a bit intrigued... they renamed the street to Putz Place? Â Locals line up in droves? Â Alright alright... I'll give it a go. Â
I had 2 chili coneys for lunch, and then had a Putz's Footlong Coney for dinner... and it still gets 5 stars.  I think I'm starting to like Cincinnati style chili.  I posted a few pics (The Blue Iceman pic is for you Chuckie G) but I forgot to take a pic of the Coney.  By the time I realized it, I was more than halfway through it.  Mmmm mmm.  I don't know what it is about the ice cream they make here, but it is fantastic!  Rich, thick, creamy goodness.  I was tempted to go back in line and get a malt afterwards, but figured I may have to tailor my suits to fit the pants if I keep eating like this... so I'll save that for next time I'm in town.  If you ever find yourself in Cincinnati for some reason, and it's open season (They're only open from late March until...?  Maybe when it gets cold out), find this place and enjoy the old school goodness of comfort food done right.  Check their website to see if they're open when you're in town at <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.putzscreamywhip.com&s=7d2f9d5677a6302c5c08e67bbac10c3aebf25fa9b8149a04de3a409dc4835503" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.putzscreamywh…</a>  Cash is King here, but the price is right.
This place is an institution, a legend in its own time. Â If Rt. 66 went through Cincinnati, this place would be on it. Â At the address above stands a proud prime example of Americana!
Wow. Â I moved away from Cincinnati a few years ago and this is one of those things that I long for. Â I've been going to Putz's since before I could walk. Â No seriously, there is a picture of me in my stroller in Putz's parking lot circa 1983. Â My mother went there when she was in high school because why? Â Well, my grandmother took her there when she was a baby. Â Yeah this place is chock-full of family history 0for me. Â So being a westsider I got stuck in my ways. Â
Blue Ice Man and a Footlong Cheese Coney with onions no mustard please! Â (Oh yeah and when I was little I could not finish a footlong I went for whatever had gumball eyes on it!)
Dare I say it... I think their cheese coney gives Skyline a run for its money. Â And that is saying ALOT!
Life was great when I would come home from school only to find that mom had stopped by Putz's on the way home and picked up a bag of 10 or so ice cream sandwiches! Â Putz's in my own freezer!? Â Wow!
Frick I love this place!
So five stars?  Dude it is Putz's.  As the sign says established in 1938,.  Yes that is when the nation was in the throes of the great depression.  After a few moves they settled on their current location where they've been for something like 50 years.  What's more, they ALWAYS have a wait!  Heck when they were building Interstate 74 the owners wrote a letter to President Nixon they got the U.S. Department of Transportation to move the Freeway over 9 feet for this place! (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.putzscreamywhip.com%2F&s=60737fc1b5c11113a3520a0b480164a56208aa2747f9e8591e69d73db206cf63" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.putzscreamywh…</a>)  Obviously they're doing something insanely right. Â
I don't give out five stars lightly but this place truly DESERVES IT!
My only complaint is I usually end up in the 'nati during Christmas and they're not open then! Â Arrgh!
Edit: Kendo thanks for the pics man! Â Seriously throwing me back right now! Â Man I wished I could roll in there tonight but alas Google tells me it is 2,195 miles away :(
Hands down, the best creamy whip in the city!
Alright now that I've gotten that out of the way...
Putz's is an institution here in Cincinnati. Family owned and operated and serving delicious delights for decades. They do soft serve, so we're not talking 31 flavors here, just vanilla and chocolate. But you can get cones, or cyclones (aka blizzards), shakes, sundaes, or any other ice cream concoction. In fact they'll even create something new if you ask nicely. My brother-in-law gets a Mountain Dew shake!
You can also get your hot dogs and hamburgers, BBQ, nachos and other "ballpark" food. But its the ice cream that keeps me coming back.
Unfortunately Putz's is a summer romance. Usually only open between memorial day and mid to end september.
