I am a fan of Sitar. Going there for dinner or takeout is something to which I look forward during the week; it brings a whole lot of flavor into my life. ;}
There was up a "help desired" sign, for an additional server. ...So if your server feels a little stressed, tip him decently and support the business--that way they can more easily grow and improve.
The food is very good.
Very Poor Service...I wish I could give them 0 stars for this!
It is a shame that they are providing this horrific service and putting the entire Indian community to shame.
I had read not such good reviews but still decided to check it out. They forgot to give us the menus to begin with. The tandoori platter was cold, over cooked/leftover and the kebabs on the platter were bone dry and hard. The person who called himself the manager instead of listening argued, while refusing to give their names...or understanding that their customer had a concern...
It was the worst experience I have had going to an Indian restaurant in the US.
Take my advice and stay away.
I wouldn't even go there I they paid me to visit them.
I didnt do the buffet thing. I couldn't decide what to order- so I went with the "house specialty." It was great! I felt like I had a little of everything I like. Plus, it was enough food for a complete meal the next day. It was reasonably priced, tasty, with good service. It didn't blow me away- but it was a good indain dinner , and that was exactly what I was after. Good job...
Review Source:Move it along, folks. Nothing to see here (that you haven't already seen before). Few things will get me moving on a lazy Saturday like the promise of an Indian buffet. So many choices. So much of it. Neverending plates of paneer. Naan. OMG, the naan! Yeah, it's true. So, things started off pretty well. 1.) I'm a fatty; 2.) I was hungry; 3.) Indian buffet; 4.) Nice hostess (we're getting somewhere)... and that's about it.
I realize Indian buffets are all about function over form (taste). The goal is to get the fattys in with the lure of all-you-can-eat goodness and roll 'em out (literally). Turn the tables. Keep costs down. But, generally, I like the restaurant to offer delicious food. Sitar phoned it in. Some of the food certainly didn't look or taste very fresh. Again, yes, I get it: quantity over quality but there just weren't enough people in the restaurant to justify turning over the selections... and it showed. Another telltale sign that the food had been sitting out for a minute: all of the meat was extremely dry. Not even the addition of sauce could rectify the tough, chewy quality of heatlamp-burned meat. The upside was that it forced me to eat more vegetables. Waitaminute. Was my mom behind this?
I'm visiting Louisville from New York on business, so you can imagine that my standards for Indian food are pretty high. No offense to Kentucky, but I didn't expect it to be this good! For $10 you get a lovely lunch buffet with a huge vegetarian section and some nice desserts. Their chai isn't too shabby, either, and the ambiance is very calm. I'll be back if I'm ever down here again!
Review Source:Went back on Friday night to finally redeem my Amazon Local coupon - had to call ahead to reserve and mention the coupon. Once again, the food was excellent (Lamb Bhuna, Fish Tikka Masala and Naan) but yet again, the service was disappointing. I think the server overheard me talking about the service after the food came out (I avoid griping before the food is served lest I get unidentifiable substances in my meal) and suddenly got his act together. But with 6-7 Indian restaurants in the city and another one in the Highlands area, why would I want to go back if the service is so bad?
Review Source:I came in on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30 to grab the lunch buffet. The food was cold and much of the buffet table was depleted. My server was rude and had the nerve to charge me for water. I'll pass - heading to Kashmir for the lunch buffet next time the mood strikes me, or better yet, Dak Shin.
Review Source:Indian is the only kind of buffet I trust. All that food sitting in the open air while people come to feast like pigs in a trough... that's kinda some revolting shit that bugs me out. But if curry can clear dysentery, it can wipe out any organic undesirables at the buffet line, so me and Indian buffets are totally cool. And for Indian buffets, Sitar is the winner. While their selection changes daily (they had goat curry last time I was there), you can always expect a large spread of tikka masala, saag, pakora, naan, and their delicious chutneys. The table is divided in half between meat and vegetarian dishes, so that's welcome news for our meatless friends.
For an Indian dinner, I recommend the food and ambiance of Dakshin. But for a delicious lunch so filling you probably won't eat the rest of the day,at an incredible value, hit up Sitar. And know that anyone who says Kashmir is better is a goddamned liar and is not your friend.
I saw Johnny T.  check in here and I was craving Indian and I just walk right in for a quick lunch. Wow everything was so amazing I have to go for another round of their buffet. They had everything I wanted and different types of curry and what I really like was that it was small portion and the owner would refill as needed.  I was totally not expecting it to be so good but what made so even more happy was when i went to pay my bill it was $7.43!!!! Really that is so cheap. i guess I miss the sign in front  about their special price today.  Best lunch I have had so far.
Review Source:There's only one way to describe the food at Sitar .....anything but a "STAR" Â ! Â You have to be completely unfamiliar with Indian food to even say this place deserves a 3 STAR ( considered a passing grade ) Â and I grew up in India which is why I'll give this place only one ! Â The food sucks and it's not cheap either. So why would I pay up the fancy restaurant prices for food that's anything but crappy ? Â I don't know , you guys tel me . If I had my way, such outfits wouldn't be around in the HIGHLANDS. They'd just go out of business. And what about the Dunkin Donuts coming our way.
If its coming and it stays open, you deserved it  :) !
Are you kidding me?? THIS place is only a few blocks from my place of work?!?
Awwwwww yeahhh....
I am here for lunch today and it's been a very pleasant experience so far! The lunch buffet is super reasonably priced ($8). It's FRESH, son. For real. The tandoori chicken & vegetable korma were uber-tasty, the available chutneys & naan were full of flavor, and the mango lassi is smooth (the dude brought my drink out pretty quick, too!). I totally recommend the lunch buffet so newbies can try out several kinds of Indian food. Did I say the buffet is FRESH? It's amazing. For dessert you can enjoy some rice pudding or these wee fried-looking honey-liquid-soaked balls. The latter was yummy but a bit sweet for me. Â
And the music...! Thank you sweet baby Jesus for the sweet Indian tunes. THIS is the music I fell in love with at age 17. I'm not really in love with Bollywood style stuff at this point... don't know much about it. But I'll tell you, the last Indian restaurant I ate at was with my Frenchie girls in Southern California, and they had these big ol' TV screens with trippy Indian music videos playing. I couldn't enjoy my food 'cause I was so glued to these strange and new sounds and sights. The "bad" (according to what I am used to, of course) acting was killing me and I was giggling between bites. I truly enjoy just hearing the wavering vocal sounds of male voices, as well as the drumming and beautiful instruments singing along. Anyhoo... music can make or break a place for me. And Sitar has got it going on.
This place isn't cheesy, it's calm and simple... and the food is tasty, I tell you. So get your butts in there and enjoy some tasty goodness. :-)
This is probably my favorite restaurant in Louisville. I consider curry soul food and this place always hits the spot. Their chicken vindaloo never disappoints and the naan bread is delicious. The service is always pleasant and efficient. The prices are also reasonable, although go up a few dollars at night. Their lunch buffet is one of the best deals in town! Â
I will say that I have not been to Indian restaurants in India or New York City (or  one of  those other cultural meccas) so I can't testify to Sitar's authenticity. My curry expertise (if such a thing exists) is mostly in Japanese curry. However, this place seems like the real deal to me. And in all of my years of going here (4 to be exact) I have never, ever been disappointed.
Sitar was one of the nicest Indian restaurants I have been to. Â The decor was very nice, and although not as unique as the Bollywood Grill in Mass., the place had soft lighting and a pleasant ambiance. Â My friend and I were seated promptly in the nearly empty restaurant (and on a Saturday night, too). Â Our waitress was spunky and had a little bit of an attitude. Â However, it wasn't over the top and she was funny, so we enjoyed having her wait on our table. Â After some pinot noir and complimentary flat bread, we had sag paneer and chicken korma (paneer for me, korma for her). Â The sag paneer, known as palak paneer at other Indian restaurants, was delicious and a little different than paneers I've eaten in the past. Â We also had garlic naan, which was delicious and had huge chunks of garlic on it (I'm not complaining!).
I've been on this kick lately about clean bathrooms. Â In this time of the H1N1 plague, restaurants and other public places need to meticulously clean their restrooms. Â Even though the employees of Sitar probably are not personally responsible for their restrooms (which they share with other businesses in their Bardstown Road building), they should know that the facilities are simply not sanitary. Â The floors and toilets were dirty, and there was no toilet paper, which resulted in paper towels being used and clogging the toilets. Â So, even though I desperately had to use the restroom, I decided to wait until we got to the movie theater. Â It was that bad...
My experience at Sitar was stellar for food and service (and we were able to use a coupon that saved us ten dollars), just not the public restroom experience. Â However, I will be back on one of my next trips to Louisville.
This has become our new Indian dinner spot. Food is delicious, a ton of options. Service is always excellent as well. Very strange restroom situation, they share one with the other restaurants and it is not climate controlled nor very sanitary. However I personally don't choose where I eat based on their bathroom facilities! That being said I highly recommend the place! Grab a Velocity on your way, there is always a buy one dinner get one free coupon inside.
Review Source:There are certain things that tip me off that an Indian joint is going to be really good. One is an Indian clientele, and another is when the restaurant is nestled in a random office building. Driving around Louisville recently, I spotted Sitar, and pulled over for the lunch buffet.
I'm not going to go into every detail because the one thing you need to know is the malai kofta was the most perfectly spiced I've eaten in years. Oh, and they have super hot chili sauce on the buffet line with the chutney to spice your dishes as you see fit. (Chefs never believe me when I ask for a dish to be 10 on the spice scale.)
I think that Sitar is merely OK. Â The first time I went, I asked the manager if they would ever put saag paneer on the buffet. Â He assured me that there were so many customers that complained of its absence that it would always be available from that point on. Â Since then, I have returned five times. Â Four of those times: no saag. Â Besides that, the buffet food is often rather bland and sometimes greasy. Â I like that they have Indo-chinese dishes, but I think that they might be MSG-laden.
I did go for dinner and ordered off of the menu. Â Not only was it pretty good, they allowed me to order two half-orders of different entrees. Â This enabled me to try a veggie and a non-veggie dish. Â The service is OK, they are somewhat friendly, and the restaurant is clean. Â Maybe they have the newbie jitters.
Well, Sitar got off to a rocky start, poor health ratings (they got a C that has since been upgraded), and their initial service was poor by any measure. But, the food here is quite good, and I feel satisfied the health concerns have been resolved and were not related to food quality directly, so I'm giving it 4-stars providing you go for the lunch buffet (weekdays 11AM-2PM & noon to 3PM on weekends) and 3-stars if you have to rely on tableside service.
