I was pleasantly surprised with their beer selection! I guess you could say that this is a dive bar, but the bathrooms were clean and the staff was friendly.
Went here to play Geeks Who Drink Trivia. It was a great time, even though we got last place :)
They bar served FREE FOOD, which was awesome.
Ashford Arms has come a long way since their original incarnation of stained carpets, sticky tables, zero visibility smoke and subpar jukebox. Â What used to be a hole-in-the-wall neighborhood joint where only locals dared venture has transformed itself into a welcoming, friendly pub. Â It's the perfect place to catch up with friends over a pint after work or unwind on a Saturday night when you don't feel like fighting the Midtown crowds.
Tucked away in Memorial, with its entrance on a side street off Dairy Ashford, there are several things that makes Ashford Arms truly unique. Â One is the trivia nights that are held every Tuesday beginning at 7pm. Â The trivia master passes out sheets of paper to intent-looking teams throughout the pub and commences asking questions ranging from pop culture trivia to the sublimely difficult and obscure. Â First prize is $50, which will more than pay your bar tab for the night.
Another unique aspect is that, while they don't have a kitchen, Ashford Arms manages to produce food nearly every night -- for free! Â Whether they order 30 boxes of pizza from Buck's, drag out a pit and smoke some brisket, or the owner brings some homemade beef stroganoff, you're always guaranteed a huge spread of free food.
Lastly, the crowd at Ashford runs the gamut from old-timers -- whom everyone seems to know -- to the trendy young things and everything in between. Â You'll get to know the bartenders and their various quirks very quickly, and soon you'll feel like you're in your own living room every time you go.
Since Houston passed the anti-smoking ordinance, Ashford has cleaned up quite nicely. Â There are still two patios for smokers to retreat to, but the inside is now relaxing and comfortable for non-smokers, too. Â If you frequent west Houston and have been looking for a pub to call home, you should check out this hidden gem.
