Went here because we had a friend in the group who wasn't 21, and wasn't allowed to eat at Publick House.

Safe to say we were extremely surprised because of the availability on a Saturday evening for 5, and an amazing server.

I had the special of the night, which was a pork chop served on a cutting board with creamed corn and a biscuit. The pork was absolutely succulent, cooked with a warm pink center and crispy outer layer. I had my girlfriend's gnocchi too, which completed my requirement of the night for some carbs.

I also ordered a Leffe Blonde, which was one of the lightest beers I've ever tasted, but still extremely flavorful.

All in all, it was a great experience, so I would probably recommend heading over to try this place out if you haven't!

Been here twice for brunch now and a good place for it, in an area where there really are not a lot of choices for it.  However, both times, the music was loud and the selection was questionable.  Not sure Phil Collins, In the Air, is brunch-time music....

Great neighborhood place! the food is good and we are always greeted with a warm hello.
All food is cooked to order (or so it seems)--it's fresh. I've never had to complain (except for my burger which didn't come as requested. ... hey, it happens!)

The drinks are good and the prices are fair.

The only suggestion would be to get AC. I mean, I'm usually NEVER hot, but this place, whew, it makes me think twice about grabbing a midweek meal here on a warm day. I usually will pass it up.

Other than that--you won't be disappointed and will want to return!!

I have eaten at the Washington Square Tavern many times, and the delicious food, yummy drinks and cozy atmosphere always keep me coming back. I have always found the service to be good and the servers and bartenders to be friendly and helpful. Most recently, I went in on a busy weekend night to meet up with a couple of friends and the hostess was extremely helpful, flexible, and accommodating when we told her we weren't sure when our full party would arrive. The owner is almost always around and is a super friendly guy who seems really devoted to his business and to good food.

I can't say enough good things about the extensive drink menu. All the cocktails I've tried have been extremely good, and I've always enjoyed the wines. They also have a good beer selection. The food is always very tasty and the menu changes regularly to keep up with what is available and fresh seasonally. They always have interesting food and drink specials as well. In addition to that, the black bean burger and regular beef burger are great consistent menu options if you want something a little less fancy and less pricy while having drinks.

After years of hearing about WST and walking past it, I finally went last week!

We were seated immediately and pretty much had our pick of tables. It got crowded near the end of our meal, so I guess we had great timing.

Since many of the reviews on here raved about the burger, I knew I had to try it. But it was a hard decision, as everything on the menu sounded fantastic (Lamb & Pistachio Meatballs? Yes, please). And it was pretty darn good. I could not believe how full I was walking home.

Although, I did have a few slices of the light, delicious sesame bread they put on the table at the beginning. And I'm sure the glass of yummy Prosecco didn't help!

I wasn't disappointed in the fries - they were crispy and tasty.

I cannot wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!

Best Meal I've had in years.

Gerry, the owner served us, a table of 6, 4 visiting from NY. Although the table was infront of the door, and the weather was bad, the food was AMAZING, the drinks were AMAZING, and Gerry was AMAZING.

He knew his menu, his farmers, his delicacy. I will be a frequenter and supporter of this restaurant until I leave MA. If you're looking for unique and delicious you will enjoy this tavern.

If not for the price, it'd be four stars for sure.  I had the seared salmon with ginger greens--excellent fish though mild greens.  The food took a little while to come out, but it was Friday night around 9PM, and there were enough people ordering food to understand.  We asked for a refill on the bread basket, which never came (sigh).  The bread was decent enough.

The lighting is fairly dark, but it works with the whole ambiance somehow.  No big deal.

    Mm, tasty seared salmon.

Took me years of driving by the place before I actually decided to stop in...

The food here is pretty outstanding. Not huge portions or particularly cheap, but very great food. My fiance ordered the scallops which were incredible and I had the burger which was one of the best I've ever had. Really. We got the fried artichokes as an appetizer, and they were decent, but I needed a microscope to find the 5 that were on the plate.

If you're a beer fan (and I am), you will at least have a small handful of good choices. It's not Publick House, but they do better than most.

Atmosphere is very familiar and comfortable. Staff was pleasant.

Overall, awesome experience. We'll be back.

    * Cozy and quiet .
    * Large cocktail menu.
    * Tasty cocktails that are reasonably priced.
    * I ordered the chicken dish and it was disappointing....
---- the side items mentioned for the dish description were more for looks, rather than a decent portion.
---- The sauce was waaaaaaaaaay to salty, it ruined the dish completely.
    * Service was ok, somewhat friendly, kinda awkward. I expected more since it wasn't busy.

Solid restaurant. Almost everything I have ordered here has been good. Their burger is outstanding. They have a decent beer list and make great cocktails. The price point is high but not any worse than other similar restaurants in Washington Square and Boston in general.

So, I've eaten here 3 times now for dinner. The food is good-to-excellent (at times). There are decent chefs who clearly take pride in what they do running the kitchen. The burger, for what my opinion is worth, is one of the better burgers I've had in Boston. I wish the fries were a bit more substantial (instead of tiny string fries).

The wine list absolutely shines. I love wine. I collect it. So, I'm a bit biased, but the list is extremely thoughtful and the markups are beyond reasonable, particularly on the $60+ bottles. Cocktail list is decent - not the best cocktails I've ever had but not bad. Decent list of whiskeys. But, let's get real, it's all about the wine here.

The owner is knowledgeable and friendly and pitches in cleaning and greeting at the door. Not many owners do that nowadays.

I never think to seek this place out and usually only end up here when other destinations in Washington Sq. (Publick House, Abbey) are too crowded. The place is pretty cool though! As a noted lighting fetishist I give it my blessing for it's tastefully ambient low lighting. Nice drink menu too.

    Great place to grab drinks.
    Clueless to the food.
    Digging the ambiance.
May be a tadbit difficult to get seats at the bar.

Note: Dont be deterred if you dont instantly see the place! Apparently its common for folks who've never been (its right on the corner between cambridge eye doctors & the home/garden center and across from athans).

Good food, nice ambiance, but I was SO disappointed at the end of the meal that there was no dessert option.  Our server told us that Athan's is across the street.  But it was zero degrees outside and we would have much preferred to stay at our table in the cozy WST and not have to brave the freezing cold to finish our meal.  We ended up going to the Fireplace where we shared a delicious dessert and some strong drinks.    Probably spent about $40 there.  Your loss, WST!

As for the food: the burger was average and the shrimp & grits were great.  We also had a side of the smoked cheddar grits, which was terrific.  Nice beer list but very limited options for wines by the glass.

I give them a 3 star review due to service. They have the tables to serve diner and the bar for people who wanna drink, chat etc. Then they have another big table in between the bar and the dinning area. That table should not be served diner at. It looks more like a bar table. The owner is always rude and if you dare to sit at that table then he says to go stand by the bar because they have to serve diner there??? Why would people wanna share their diner table whith other couples/people?? It's like a shared table. LOL I understand to not go sit at a 2 top table while having drinks but what's wrong with sitting at that shared table??

But if you do end up having diner the food is really good but for 2 people it can go up to $100(with drinks) then I am better off going to a nice place in Boston and really enjoy my diner. There is nothing wrong with this place it's just that it's more of a dive than anything.

If you sit at the tables by the window it smells like 10,000 mice died under the table-gross.

Other than that the place is nice. The food is outstanding but they should never ever consider serving diner at that table. I like the design in that place. After 10ish pm they have a bouncer to check people's IDs.

I really love this place. Our waiter was friendly, the food was good, and it kind of had that 'Cheers - you - can - just - hang - here - and - chill - and - nobody - will - circle - your - table - like - a - vulture - in - that - get - the -eff - outa - here - already - you've -eaten - your - food 'vibe. It was the perfect spot for our Sunday brunch, as we nommed on eggs benedict, huge slices of french toast, and omelettes. They practically fill your coffee every time you take a sip, which I don't mind -- it shows they're pretty attentive.

If you're a) looking for a relaxing brunch, b) caring for a hefty hangover, or c) want a chill low-key place for food or drinks, this is your spot.

100% of this 2 star review is due to service.

Our waitress was either drunk, on drugs, or experiencing some kind of illness.  I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume the latter, but I can't believe management allowed her to serve.  I'll try to summarize.

First, (slurring her words) she asks us what we want to drink.  We need a few minutes to think so we ask for water in the meantime.

Ten minutes later - no water - she asks us what we want to drink.  We order a dogfish head and a Mayflower Hoppy Wheat.   We also order two medium rare burgers because we're starving.  And two waters.

She pops around two more times -- Mayflower?  Yes, and a dogfish head.  We repeat.  And water.

She finally brings over the Mayflower and we remind her about my dogfish again.  She promises to return with it.  And two waters.

Ten minutes later my boyfriend goes up to the bar to get my beer.  Flustered and confused she rushes to get the dogfish and two waters, promising the drinks will be on her.  (Flashforward to the bill: they weren't.)  She apologizes and explains (slurs) that she has been trying to train someone.  At least that's what it sounds like.

After another twenty minutes, a rational waiter comes over and asks if we need anything.  We ask about our burgers and he goes right into the kitchen to ensure they were ordered.  He returns with our completed orders which had obviously been ready for pickup.

Our waitress has since disappeared.  I hope the manager had the good sense to send her home -- something was really wrong.  As comparison, my boyfriend had just arrived from a 24 hour trip from Vietnam and was severely jetlagged.  He would have at least remembered the waters.

A coworker brought me here on my recent work trip and it was the perfect place to finish off a busy couple of days.

I don't normally drink martinis, but we decided to start off with a couple. Because I'm not a martini connoisseur, I probably should't try and say much about it. Suffice it to say, I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the glass of red wine with which I followed it up. It was a server recommendation and I have absolutely no idea what it was. Oops.

I had a bit of a hard time picking what to eat. I'm not a vegetarian but I often eat like one and, let's face it, there weren't a ton of veg-friendly options on this menu. Not only am I sort of weird about meat, I'm even weirder about things like lamb and baby octopus. Luckily, I was able to order the gnocchi minus the lamb - win!

I love me some gnocchi, and this gnocchi didn't disappoint. There was WAY too much sauce but that's not the worst thing in the world. Had I not been stuffed, I would have stuck some bread in there and eaten it up.

Super cute place, too, and our server was nice. Kind of makes me wish I lived in the area!

I really, really like this place. Its comfortable, the food is great and always reasonably priced and the staff is familiar and helpful. The owner takes time to get to know his customers and really has a personal touch that you just don't get in most places today. Im a big fan of the steak frites, which I would put up against anything in a Paris bistro, good stuff all around.

I wanted to update my review for Washington Square Tavern. I returned a month after the last visit because I really wanted to like it. I love the idea of using as much of a pig, cow, etc as possible to make different dishes....and WST does just that. When I returned, they were not out of anything and the food was delicious. I got the pork cutlet on top of an arugula salad...it was perfect for those Paleo dieters out there. The service was much better and the owner is very friendly and always making an appearance. The food is very fresh and menu resembles more of an upscale restaurant than a bar.

Exceptional beer menu.  Great selection although our bartender was definitely in training and learned a little bit from us about the selections.  But it was all in good fun.  The more experienced bar tender (should have caught his name) was mixing some amazing cocktails for others.

The burgers are quite good.  One of ours was under cooked by a big margin.  So we sent it back but kept the fries to nibble on in the meantime.  Strange, they returned with the burger and no fries.  I get it that they didn't owe us the extra order of fries, but it was a bit odd to eat the meal in parts.  Wasn't our fault the food was undercooked.  Oh well.

The fried clam app was great too.

    Great atmosphere too.

still love this place! Jerry has a great crew in the kitchen and tonight I learned that unlike most restuarnts, a lot of things are homemade! they literally buy a whole pig and use every bit for something whether it will be the prosciutto on your plate or the fois gras, to your tossed fettucine. gotta love a place that respects food in every way.

tonight was great. the food was amazing as always and never dissapoints. I'm not sure why people are hating on the service so much. In my opnion, when you see that a resturant is full and bustling with people, you excuse the slower service. If you can't do it better yourself, don't complain about it! I know that it gets pretty busy in the evengins, so if you dont want the crowd, go a bit earlier.

Lots of people I recommend this place to, dont think the food will be good because it's "just a pub" but let me reassure you, the dishes here are top notch. everytime i try something new, I'm BLOWN AWAY.

I'll admit, I went in expecting a dive-y pub menu because I didn't read any reviews about this place. I obviously should have expected that being in Brookline among the privileged and the proper, I was getting myself into a finer, more upscale dining experience. This place pulls off a perfect mix of the two, with a contemporary gastro-pub menu and awesome beer/wine list, but with a casual, unpretentious atmosphere and waitstaff.

The food itself was great, starting with the duck spring rolls. Crispy crunch, tender duck, and a nice hoisin sauce for some added flavor. I followed up with the sirloin steak, mashed potatoes and veggies. Cooked just right. Washed it down with a nice Allagash White Ale. Satisfying to say the least.

I ended up here with Margot G. after attempting two other spots in the area (the Publick House being one of them) that seemed to have people spilling out the door. Thankfully two women stood up right as we came in, so we were able to snag a few seats by the window. Bonus! People watching!

I don't have too much to complain about here, but nothing really to rave about either, hence the 3-star rating. We only came for drinks because we'd had dinner elsewhere, so I can't comment on the food.

Service ~ the bartender was straight up overwhelmed with demand, but he managed to fill our orders fairly quickly. It took some effort to get his attention the first time, but the second time around was relatively painless.

Drinks ~ pretty decent selection of beers on tap and wine. We opted for the Honkers Ale by Goose Island, but it didn't really taste like what I remember it tasting like. I'm not sure if that's the fault of their taps or the fact that Anheuser-Busch bought them out last year. If there's anyone that could ruin what Goose Island was, it's them.

Cost ~ about average for Boston standards.

I wouldn't be opposed to coming here again, but it's not my first choice. I will say that the seating area next to the full size window can be kind of awesome on a Saturday night as you watch all sorts of people drunkenly stumble home and/or to the T stop across the street.

If you're looking for an intimate, cozy tavern to snag a few drinks look no further.

This place has such a lovely atmosphere. Dim/soft lighting (which I'm a HUGE fan of), never too loud and the bartenders tend to keep a pretty good selection of music playing.

The beer and wine list is fantastic; I used to come here to indulge my Belgian ale cravings but now I tend to just order a glass of wine or two seeing they have a pretty swell selection of by-the-glass reds.

The only thing that I've been disappointed with (and upon walking in at 11pm on any day of the week its hard not to notice) is that they have a seating requirement. To sit down at any of the booths/tables, you must be dining in. For a vegan who can't eat almost anything on their menu, its pretty disappointing.

Would give this place 3.5 stars.  Convenient location, and if you get a bigger table/booth its quite cozy, and not too loud in there.   Service was spotty, at times our server would disappear for long stretches, but closer to the end of her shift she was around alot more to check in on things.  I agree with the OP though, menu has limited options and seems overpriced for the type of locale. I ended up with a burger, which was delicious, but they brought out medium-rare when I wanted medium-well, other than that, I'd recommend it.   Seemed like a good selection of alcohol, but FYI the shots can be about $7/each.

FYI - they wont let you sit at a table unless you order food, and if you start off at the bar and ask to move to the table, they'll give you a hard time about it (i.e., they need to speak with the manager if its ok, even though a table is open), apparently they dont understand why if you're a group of 6, you dont want to sit at a bar with your back turned to each other as you eat your food.

It helps that I live around the corner, but I think that even if I didn't, I'd still be here. All. The. Time.

My boyfriend tries the burger at pretty much every restaurant, and each time he says "It's no [Washington Square] Tavern burger."

I don't know what it is about it. It's huge. Dripping with burger juice, the juice from the tomato, the gooey cheese. It creates a marriage of multiple textures, from the firm tomato to the crispy bacon to the melt in your mouth burger.

Other highlights: there are always specials. Special appetizer, special entree, special beers, special wines, and, best of all, special cocktails. In the winter it was often the hot buttered rum, but starting last night, summer is in the air (at the Tavern): spiked strawberry-kiwi lemonade. "It's summer in a glass!" -my boyfriend, while alternating sips between my pink drink and his Guinness.

The chicken, with mushrooms hidden underneath, is delicious. I'd skip the mussels. The steak appetizer is surprisingly huge.

Ambiance: there are bikes on the walls, a bookshelf in the back, friendly bartenders, and almost always a crowd. If you're going at peak hours, be prepared to wait for a table or a seat at the bar, but wait with a drink in hand and you'll be a happy camper.

Washington Square Tavern has cozy pub feel and is an excellent place to meet up with friends for drinks.  Their draft been selection is extensive and they do have some unique offerings that you don't see very often such as Endurance Pale Ale and Cambridge Seasonal.  I have never eaten here but the food looks delicious and friends have given it rave reviews.

You really feel like the management cares about their customers!  I was here with a gluten-free friend recently and heard a story about how the owner gave her a tour of the kitchen and food preparation to make her feel better about eating there.  That's awesome.

5 stars for food, 10 stars for customer service!!

Went here for dinner last night for the first time.  The fresh salmon was cooked so perfectly moist, fluffy (yes fluffy!), and tasty!  The delicate asparagus were grilled to perfection!

I called ahead earlier in the day to confirm they would be able to accommodate some of the temporary dietary restrictions I am unfortunately on, and reviewed with them what selections I was interested in.  I was assured they would be all too happy to accommodate.

Once there that evening and upon placing my order, the waiter asked me if I had called earlier.  Turns out it had been the chef I had spoken to when I called and he had alerted the staff.  Wow!  As much as I wanted to compliment the chef right then and there, figured perhaps I should wait till I actually tasted my meal.  lol!

Joyfully I was not let down!  My salmon and asparagus as I previously referred to above, were fabulous!!  Regardless of restrictions!!  So nice to be able to actually enjoy dining out again!

I was able to thank both the owner and chef at the same time for being so accommodating and for such a delicious meal.  They were so sweet and welcoming. They also let me know they do have an entire celiacs/gluten free menu and that I should feel free in the future to let them know again if I have any special requests.  Finally a place that understands and doesn't make one feel high maintenance!!

That is why their customer service deserves 10 stars to me and why I am looking forward to becoming a regular here!

The warm decor rounded out the overall lovely experience.

Totally a fan of this place. Tonight was my first experience at the Tavern after hearing so many good things from friends, and the reviews didn't disappoint. A friend and I waited for about a half hour for a table, which was spent at the bar consuming delicious cocktails (pomegranate martini = deliciousness). I liked the crowd here, friendly, non-college, a good mix of locals (loving the Irish host/bartenders BTW). It was crowded without being ridiculous, and the bartenders were very attentive. The interior was really cozy and intimate and familiar, without being pretentious. Be warned, tables are quite close together, so don't expect to have a secret intimate conversation without your neighbor overhearing.

I ordered the salmon with potato/crab hash, and my dining companion got the zucchini cakes, and both were d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. My salmon was excellently prepared and on the rare-er side which I loved, with an amazing tasting herb garnish, and the hash was sooooo delicious, cubes of red roasted potatoes flecked with crab meat topped with watercress(?). A perfect portion for dinner, I was exactly full after eating this dinner. My friend really liked her zucchini cakes, and I had a bite to confirm their deliciousness (and uniqueness too).

Prices were on the steeper end of affordable (for me), but totally worth it for the quality. I could see myself being a regular here, it's a solid choice for dinner or drinks.

    DRINK REVIEW

This place is great neighborhood spot. I came for a few drinks and was impressed with the selection of alcohols, great music (reggae), and overall atmosphere. Drinks were reasonable and strong! The bartender was rude, though, and got seemingly irritated when I paid for a drink with a credit card, and then asked to pay for another drink with a credit card again (rather than keep a tab open). I'd like to come back and try the food. If I lived in Washington Square, this would absolutely be my neighborhood watering hole.

While it's far out on the T, it's literally RIGHT off the T stop, and there are a few cab stands close by, which is convenient! The Chinese place next door delivers to the Tavern as well, which is funny/convenient/awesome.

"I can't believe you like that place! There were no TVs, it was candle lit, and so old fashioned! And come on, where was the club music!?"

    Yeah, exactly.

This is, hands down, my favorite place to go for a drink in Boston. It seems to cater primarily to the late 20s crowd, but isn't disdainful of those younger or older. They've got the whole spectrum of drinks... good martinis, wines, and beers. And their food is to die for.

The Lamb Lollipops (!!!) are out-of-control delicious. I've heard good things about their steak, but haven't tried it yet. Their garlic fries are an excellent appetizer to share. And the salads get good marks too.

If you're anything like me, you won't regret going here :)

This is a solid local tavern - I put off visiting for quite some time, I'm not sure why. I suppose because I'd never 'seen' it - as others mention there's no sign! Fyi its right across the street from Athans.. in between the hardware store and eyeglasses place.

Busy, but not annoying-faniuel-hall-bar-busy..  you definitely will be bumping elbows and getting cozy with friends and strangers alike at the bar.

Good beers on tap and very good service. They are happy to transfer a bar tab to your table and are very lax about it all - a great thing about those neighborhood places.

Great fried pickles (I see now that I have two reviews in a row mentioning fried pickles.. hellooo good trend).. stacked neatly as an appetizer. Must say I was a bit disappointed in the steak frites. It was a fine example of the dish, for sure, but I believe I ordered it with too high of expecations and an inability to acutally pick a meal. It was between this and a burger, and honestly, the I found the price of the burger a bit disheartening. I feel that the steak was very tender, but could have used a bit more deglazing goodness, and a touch more accurate cooking. The fries were great.. and service was fairly relaxed despite a very busy night.

I will say.. the steak frites from Lumiere has forever ruined the meal from me. I don't think it can get ANY better - so it is really my fault for a semi-disappointing meal at WST. I will go back though, and have something more appropriate.

This place has good bartenders, great appetizers and good drinks.  But here is a question:  WHY IS THERE NO SIGN OUTSIDE? I walked past this place three times before I found it.  (there is a name etched on the glass window).
Anyway, I digress.. the place is small so it fills up rather quickly.  Great place to go for a drink and a snack..  Good crowd

This has always been a favorite but since I've moved from Brookline and because it's always crowded, I tend to forget about it. Returning last night felt like coming home and I'm so glad we did.

You'll never not wait for a table. And the bar will probably be crowded. But the staff is friendly, the beer selection is good, and the cocktails are strong. Plus, it's worth the wait. I've never had less than a stellar meal here, and with the current menu listing only two entrees above $20 it's definitely Boston-affordable.

Last night the BF and I had planned on getting entrees (he was leaning toward veal picatta - I was undecided between a duck special and roasted chicken) but we ended up gorging ourselves on apps instead. We started with the fried pickles and the lamb lollipops. Mind you, this is the second night in a row I'd had fried pickles (what a life I live) but these were outstanding - a light crust surrounding a crunchy, tart pickle. The lamb lollipops were small grilled chops with balsamic, mint oil, and bruleed goat cheese, which made the cheese especially sweet and mellowed out the mint oil against the salty meat.

We also couldn't resist the grilled stuffed calamari and the short rib agnoletti. I didn't even know you could stuff calamari - apparently you can stuff it with linguica and serve it over smoky beans and I will nearly cry over how delicious it is. Who knew? The agnoletti was really good, but the calamari was really incredible.

No dessert, but it's across the street from Athan's so you're not hurting for sweets if you so desire.

I know this place gets mixed reviews, and I never understand them because my experiences here have always been fantastic ones. I hope yours are, too.

Like an old friend, Washington Square Tavern ultimately treats you the same no matter what you do to it. I've been here to celebrate birthdays, drown sorrows, go on an awkward date, or to cap off an evening after about six heavy IPAs across the street at Publick House. That one didn't end well.

Needless to say, the staff seem to have descended from heaven itself. Spill a drink? No problem, we'll wipe it down. Need some water? My son, it's the essence of life. Want a beer recommendation? I'll hook you up.

It's just so damn dark! At one point an older gentleman out on a dinner date with his wife leaned over to my raucous crew and said, "Good lord, do you think they could spare a light bulb in here?" He then proceeded to look slyly at his wife, put his hand to his mouth and said, "You know what it is, I bet a bunch of these people here are having all kinds of affairs and don't want to be seen." Yeah, that was creepy.

Paulaner is always on tap and the baked lobster is amazing. That is all.

Eating a delicious Steak Frites with six friends in a lively, but cozy restaurant in Brookline -  $22 + Tax and Tip

Drinking a delicious bottle of Pinot Noir with those same friends, talking about "old times" - about $8 per person

Having the waitress make it EXTREMELY CLEAR THAT "Washington Square Tavern does not DO BIRTHDAYS" - priceless

I know that WST does not do dessert.  I know that they don't take reservations.  And I know that their food and wine list is top notch in this neck of the woods.  But seriously folks - our friend was having a 30th birthday dinner and to have the waitress explicitly tell us (in front of him) that he has no chance of having any birthday cupcake or anything is just plain awkward.  Just don't say anything!  Way to lower my expectations, WST, the new birthday Grinch of Boston.

If those burgers and Steak Frites weren't so damn good...

    Happy in several capacities:

    1) Afternoon happy hour drink with mom: we walk in giddy from girl talk at the nail salon next door.  Dreeeaaamy Irish bartender with a brogue mixes up a perfect cosmo for mom, and some kind of gimlet for me, all the while coversing with a boyish lesbian couple about redoing their kitchen - and checking out color swatches on the bar.  Mom and I proceed to get tipsy right there at 5pm, before dinner, as if we're grownups.

    2) Bad mood fixer: what a terrible Thursday I was having at the hospital! Patients with an apparent alarm clock because they choose to get sick right when I'm supposed to go home; interns who can't be trusted; surgeons who give you unnecessarily harsh attitude.  I felt so beat down.  My husband gently placed me in the car, and brought me here.  Evidently, Thursday is date night, as the place was packed with couples, so we played along and had ourselves a date, with wine, appetizers, and entrees.  The atmosphere is dark and homey, and something smells deliciously smokey.  The wine list is impressive, and mixed cocktails looked good too.  I ate a perfectly medium rare steak and he had a burger.  Lack of dessert was sad, but I was cheered up, and ready for another masochistic day at work on Friday.

    3) What to do with people you don't really like:  had to hang out with some people out of obligation.  Didn't want to commit a full night or an entire dinner's budget, so met up for a late evening drink here.  Sat at one of the long communal tables and split a bottle of wine for $30.  Then said bye and went home.  Perfectly served.
