I have lived in Boston for four years and have gone to the 21st on several occasions. All have been pleasant besides my most recent visit. While the general atmosphere is great, my family and I had the misfortune of being served by a waitress named Bailey. Now for fellow yelp reviewers reading this, please note that the restaurant itself is a 5 star establishment. However, do yourself a favor and switch waitresses if yours happens to be Bailey. Not only was she slow, unprofessional, and careless about our orders, but she had a general negativity about her that genuinely ruined our dining experience. And if you're the owner of this establishment reading this review, be careful having people like her working for you. You never know who you're serving.

The place looks great inside &  out, & the location directly across from the state house, coupled with the fact its apparently the favorite Watering hole of John Kerry make you feel like it may well be the quintessential Beacon Hill bar.  That being said the food is merely average, no better than it need be and the beer selection could certainly use some improvement.  Ditto that sentiment for the strictly adequate service. Still a solid choice if in an area where there really aren't many other options, and again the atmosphere is top notch.

Came in here for a few drinks and some fries. It has a nice dark atmosphere and the bartenders were attentive. The only complaint are the flies, trust me you will see them if you sit at the bar.

I USED to come here a lot with my girlfriend. That was until we went in for dinner one night and sat in the back by the woman's bathroom. from our seat you can see into the soup and salad station of the kitchen. we were waiting for our drinks when a cook came out of the kitchen into the soup/salad area. he was on the phone, which is no problem, but as he stood there he had his free hand all the way down his PANTS and UNDERWEAR. This was all in plain sight of the guests.... I dont even wanna know what goes on in the areas we cannot see... We said something to a server and her response was " oh its ok he wears gloves when he cooks." You have got to be kidding me. Last time we will ever go into that disgusting establishment. The owner is also not friendly at all and is quite rude %99 of the time. I will forever be telling the people i see looking at the menu outside to never ever eat there.

    One word: Nachos!

21st Amendment has some of the best nachos in Boston. I got the chili nachos and they were GREAT. They are big, lots of chili, lots of cheese, layered well. Also, 21st Amendment tends to be a good social scene too. I haven't had any of the other food here but if you're looking for a place to get good nachos then this should definitely be on your list!!!

And it's in Beacon Hill which is one of my fave spots!

This place is decent. It's never horribly crowded and is very convenient if you live in Beacon Hill or the Financial District. It's also pretty affordable. I just haven't found a drink that I'm crazy about yet, and am not into bar food. Not a bad place to hang out with a group.

Love the atmosphere and the staff was very welcoming and friendly. I had the grilled chicken club and it was delicious. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

    Why five stars? ATMOSPHERE.

This is a very cozy and warm place to grab drinks with coworkers at the end of the day. It's not a very big place, but I think that adds to its charm. It's dark and woodsy, which is just my kind of place.

The music is usually quality. It can be too loud sometimes though. One time it got turned up so loud when they finally turned it down most of the customers joined in a round of applause (me included haha). But that stuff happens. I'm not going to dock a whole star off of a a fantastic place like this.

I've gone with a group of six coworkers and sat comfortably in a booth. And I've gone on a date here and stood in the bar area the whole time because it was so crowded. Both were great experiences though! I recommend this place all the time!

Great atmosphere and better than average pub grub. The bartenders can get distracted easily and aren't too hip to how classic cocktails are made (A Negroni in a martini glass with a lemon and lime wedge?), so prep for that. Otherwise, a worthy trip into an old haunt atop Beacon Hill.

I like this place. I met up with some friends and arrived early, so I had a glass of wine at the bar. The service was friendly and low-key. We told one of the servers that, in a short while, we would need a table for a group of six, and she was very helpful in saving us a big corner table, despite the busy dinner rush. Even when two of our friends did not end up showing up, she didn't act like it was the end of the world -- she seemed happier to help us than to turn over tables. The food was pretty good as well -- I had a salad with goat cheese, cranberry, and loads of grilled chicken. I might try to stop in here next time I find myself downtown late at night. It has a good vibe for drinks and hanging.

21st Amendment has a fantastic cozy atmosphere. We've only been during off-peak hours after movies on weeknights or weekend matinees, but the 21st Amendment always serves up great beer and delicious food at very reasonable prices. It's a favorite of ours whenever we're in the area.

Prior to 21st Amendment, I've had no experience/expectations when it comes to Irish pubs.

    What I've learned from a Friday, 9 p.m. jaunt to 21st:

    - Everyone's drunk and belligerent, but it's entertaining. Everyone's also screaming, but the words are likely indistinguishable and Irish step dancing may occur.

    - The inattentive, flaky service is unpleasantly unsurprising if you're not buying copious amounts of alcohol. Imagineer that.

    - The menu offers a pleasantly surprising goat cheese salad with vinaigrette, candied nuts and dried berries in addition to the expected, traditional fare.

    - The dimly lit, dive-y atmosphere, in contrast with the hum of boozy festivity, downplays the noisy chaos without morphing the whole scene into a dark, cave-like setting.

    - Watch out for the suspiciously delicious sweet potato fries. Come in to feed one addiction, leave with another. You've been warned.

A little dark and dive-y; great food at great prices (this is Boston, after all).  Good place to have a beer and catch a game.  I'd go here often if I didn't live in California.

Great food, great drinks and all at a decent price! I came here with a bunch of my friends on a Friday night and they were more than happy to accommodate us. They do not take reservations but if you call about 2 hours before your party is to arrive, they'll do a pretty good job, getting your table set up and reserved for you before your party gets there. The servers are super friendly and their menu offers a good variety (buffalo nachos, burgers, steak tips, etc.) Beers were quite cheap. Six dollars for a smuttynose or a shipyard pumpkin. This place seems to fill up around five when all the office people come out and need to drink away their sorrows before heading home or to the next office event. Around 8 or 9, the place seems to fill up again but the place is well staffed so that you won't have an empty glass for long.

A divey place, moderate pricing for Boston. It gets a bit crowded at night with the Suffolk crowd. The food is good. A cool place to hang when in Boston

I don't know why it took me so long to make it to this place.  Great neighborhood bar with good food.  Bartender was awesome and you can tell it's a local's place.  If you're from out of town and stop by here, please do me a favor and don't act-a-fool.

We came here visiting Boston and didn't know where to eat lunch, and Yelp directed us here.  Thanks to other Yelpers, we knew to get the Nachos and then we also did an order of sweet potato fries and sliders.  Everything was phenomenal.  The nachos were made with REAL CHEESE.  It was epic.  It wasn't that melty gross crap.  The sliders had the full taste of a burger despite being pint size.  The sweet potato fries, where do I begin?  Great!

The best part was that the movie "What's Your Number?" was filmed here.  I LOVE that movie, so it was awesome to be a part of cinema history by eating here.

Have you ever just walked into a place and knew you were going to like it no matter what they did in the moments that followed?  That's kind of what I experienced with 21st.  While it is by no means a secret, it manages to maintain a tucked-away, neighborhood-bar-atmosphere while serving up ice cold brews (Whales Tale on tap never hurts) and delicious pub-style food (I recommend the braised short-rib grilled cheese or the 21st Burger) well into the evening.  A great place to eat and drink with friends, assuming you don't mind a little noise.  Quickly becoming one of my favorite spots in town.

In the words of Phil Dunphy: SWEET POTATO FRIES!! Yes they are that good that I needed to make a "Modern Family" reference. OK, so here are my thoughts on this lovely joint.

    The selection of beers: awesome
The ambiance: just peachy once you have a few of the aformentioned
The burgers: WAIT! The bugers! My problem with burgers at most restaurants is that they try to one up everyone by making the burgers this massive conglomerate of beef and fixins that sound good on paper but once you get it in front of you, you can't even fit the thing in your mouth (thats what she said). The 21st Amendment does burgers right, not only with the size, but with the fixins and all.  I devoured the blue cheese burger and it was by far one of the best burgers Ive had in Boston. Amazebawls.

I'm looking forward to my next visit to this fine establishment.

Went here on a date the other day and I would have to say it is one of my favorite spots Downtown.  Food was absolutely delicious (I got a pesto sandwich I believe) and the beers were appropriately priced. I would have to say that this place is probably better in the summer because they windows that they keep open which adds to the vibe there.

I was unaware that they had drink specials at the bar (didn't want to show my thrifty roots to a girl who I had never talked to sober) so I just went for a Sam Adams summer as a dependable favorite. Would definitely come here again for a date and would recommend it to anyone out there as it is convenient to get to and very solid.

Such a typical boston bar. Everyone's wearing the same uniform - polo/button down shirt, khaki shorts, and boat shoes. The place was so hot and crowded. I felt like anywhere I was standing, I was in the way. The only good thing about our time there was the Wachusett Blueberry beer that we had beause they put a small handful of blueberries in the glass. Other than that, you can just keep walking right past this bar unless sweaty wasps are your thing.

My fiance and friend met here for lunch and it was very good.

Having read many of the reviews before deciding on this spot, we were ready to order pretty quickly.  It's the perfect spot just off the Commons and nestled across from the State House.   We ordered the BBQ steak tips (amazing!) the 21 Burger and the gorgonzola bacon burger, all with Sweet Potato Fries and onion rings.  The food was hot and cooked perfectly.  We have bookmarked this spot and will definitely be back.  Blueberry beer with fresh blueberries was tasty on a warm summer day.  Service was great!  Make it a destination!

This place was OK. As far as bars go, you can find better in Boston.

    Positives:

    - Drinks were well priced

    Negatives:

    - This is a bar. Not a club. It was a Monday night and the music was blaring so loudly I had to shout to be heard by the guy right next to me.

    Neutral:

-The bartender asked me about 10 times if I wanted another. While I appreciate good service it was a little bit of an overkill. He was very nice though!

Went here on a saturday night, and the place was busy but not packed.  The bar was more crowded than the dining area.  Came here with my girlfriend to have dinner.  She had the vegetable quesadillas, and I had the steak tips.  Both were excellent - the steak tips were cooked to my liking, and the sides were great as well.  Their onion rings are delicious!  Her portion was a bit smaller than mine, but mine was very large, so it worked out well.  Was able to take home about a quarter of my dinner, and it made for a great brunch the day after.

The atmosphere is casual and very welcoming.  The place is lit pretty dim, and they have some TV's around the place, even in the dining area(but they weren't a distraction).  The service was quick and friendly, and the food was great.

The price of the food was very reasonable - we didn't have any drinks except for some iced tea and a coke, and our total came under 30 dollars.  I'd definitely come here again.

Wait whats the 21st ammendment again? *quick wikipedia search*

Oh obviously the one that ended prohibition. You guys didnt know that? Ha

Pretty good name for a divey type bar that you may have found during prohibition. Beer is cheap at 3 dollars for some of the tallboys, and a beer of the month. Food is very good with large portions. I had the tuscan chicken sandwich, good mix of ingredients with tons of great steak fries. One of my buddies had the pulled pork girlled cheese that looked good. Waitresses and owners were friendly and attentive even on a busy day.

The only reason that this place doesnt get 5 stars is its a little too small and dark for my tastes, but hey to each his own I guess.

    Love this place!

Half price appetizers between 3 and 6 (I think--definitely ends at 6)! Came here for the first time and had the mini-burgers. For $5 we got four decently sized mini-burgers and an enormous mound of onion rings. Burgers were incredibly tasty. Onion rings are hand battered and fried to order. The single order was pretty filling. We each had one of their $3 beers. I don't think we have ever paid so little for good food and beer.

The vibe: a reliable neighborhood pub with friendly service.

Will be back again and again.

I lived in Boston this last summer for an internship and spent quite a bit of time at 21st Amendment. I had a great time every time I was there-- it's a great neighborhood bar with great food. The service is good and people are among the friendliest I met in Boston. I was in Boston alone, and ate at 21st Amendment by myself all the time. The bartenders are all really nice, and didn't make me feel awkward for dining alone.

This led me to return 8-10 times over the 2 months I was in town.

As for the food- the 21st Burger is to die for! I really enjoyed the onion rings. I also recommend the sweet potato fries. They are delicious. There are great beers on tap too!

I have never been sober enough to review this place properly.  I can attest to the fact that they serve items that cost money, because I have had to go to this place multiple times to retrieve my abandoned debit card.

Also they seem to be very nice about not giving away abandoned debit cards.  The inside is very dark and cool, with plenty of old-school looking stuff.

I have been coming here for about 6 years now, as I work down the street. I used to just go with coworkers for after drink beers and nachos, but lately I have gone several times for lunch. (There are not a ton of healthier options on the menu. I pregnant now and can guilt-free have a burger for lunch!)

I have always liked this place, but I needed to say that the burger and fries here are amazing. The burger is juicy, has a nice sesame bun, good tomato, onion slice, and lettuce, and comes with a refreshing pickle. The fries are perfect. Nice and hot, crunchy on the outside, very soft and fluffy in the inside, bigger steak-fry type fries, and are seasoned with salt nicely.

I have also enjoyed their quesadillas. Back when I was drinking, I enjoyed the beer.

Very cozy, pub atmosphere. I enjoy the fake, but warm fireplace.

I haven't had any food here, so I feel like I can't judge the full experience. What I CAN judge, however, is how packed it gets here on a Friday night. Man, it's just wall to wall people, some of whom looked a little worse for the wear before midnight when I rolled up in here a month or so ago. Luckily, I'm an expert at negotiations and scored a table for 8 people in about five minutes, so at least we didn't have to stand!

Service was spotty while we were there; it took about 25 minutes to get a pitcher of beer after it was ordered. I do like that they have decent beers in pitchers; I hate when places give you the option of Bud or Bud Light - I'd rather set myself on fire, thanks.

I'm willing to give it another shot when it's not prime yah-dude time, but for right now it's a solid 3 star for me.

Met up with a couple of friends here at the 21st Amendment while I was in town for Christmas/New Years. The entire time I was here, I couldn't stop thinking about Nucky Thompson from Boardwalk Empire, which is one of my new obsessions.

The atmosphere in the 21st Amendment is interesting - everything looks very old including the building (it probably is). It has a pretty neat post & beam construction.

There was a solid, albeit not enormous drink menu. They have a handful of good beers on tap. We were pre-gaming for the New England Aquarium, so I ordered up something a little stronger, an egg nog & bourbon drank, which was the tasty. Highly recommended. Overall, the drinks seemed very reasonably priced.

The food menu was lengthy. I opted for the Portobella sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries, which is how I measure the quality of a restaurant, were very good.  My sandwich was also tasty.

Great little bar in Beacon Hill - definitely swing by for a reasonably priced lunch.

21st is my favorite bar in the Beacon Hill/Downtown area. It's small, intimate and totally adorable.

The drinks are affordable. The food is tasty (they do a burger right). Trivia here is a hoot too.

It's a refreshing option to Beantown Pub and other tourist traps in the area. Just do it.

Many brownie points for 21st Amendment's location on the very charming Beacon Hill. The signboard lettered in gold outside gleams invitingly on looking long enough at it. (A reminder of its very historic next-door-neighbor with its 200-year old carefully preserved gold-coated dome?)

This unassuming little bar is a great place to catch up with friends or colleagues for the after-work hours. Offerings include staple American fare that pair well with liquor...things like pizza, sandwiches, greasy treats, quesadillas etc.  There's a modest selection of drinks to choose from. I usually don't go in for very fruity flavors, but they had a lot of fruit cocktails on their menu, so why not, I figured.

Our meal which began with a strawberry stoli and a blueberry lemonade was fleshed out by a grilled cheese with tomatoes (side of sweet potato fries) and a tuna melt with a side of regular fries.

My customized strawberry stoli was sweet, slightly weak in a good way and fruity. So-so. I found the blueberry lemonade that I sampled to be decent too - not much of a contrast to my stoli.

The sweet potato fries that arrived with my grilled cheese were really good, fresh, hot and crisp and chockful of flavor. The s/w itself was pretty good - a little heavy on the butter though. My friend's review of the tuna melt comprised of the phrase "it was nothing special".

Overall, the food was satisfactory, not much to complain about. IMHO, what stood out were the ambience and the interiors. The place is so casual and chilled out, as reflected in the heavy noise of conversation and casual dressing styles of the patrons. Also, what really caught my eye when I entered is the small size of the place and its heavy dark-chocolate wood interiors. It wasn't too hard to find a table there in spite of all of them being occupied during the hour and a half we spent there. Also, the waitstaff were busy bees but friendly enough to take care of the patrons.

Also, this is one of the few places that, although is at street level, is protected enough from the main streets and crowds, so you don't have passersby peering in while you chew on your food feeling like a museum artefact.

I don't mind coming back, but only on a sunny afternoon as this one.

My girlfriend and I took a trip to Boston from New York in February and stumbled upon this place in our hunt for a pre-dinner drink. Well, that pre-dinner drink turned into a few drinks and dinner itself. Great, great, great food!!!  Boston is the last place I wood think to get pulled pork but their pulled pork sliders were FANTASTIC!!!  Their thin crust pizzas were perfect as well!

Cut to last night...we took another trip out to Boston to visit family and had to revisit! We were extremely disheartened to hear that the pulled pork sliders were no longer on the menu but the waitress asked the cooks and those delightful SOBs pulled out that pulled pork and made them just for us!

    Great place. 21 tasty-raisty points!

Owner contacted me, and made everything right. As I said in my original review this is the place I would like to spend my winter nights. Cozy, old school, and delicious.

It was one bad apple experience that ruined it for me last time, I'm glad everything was cleared up and I enjoyed myself a lot this last time I attended. I recommend this place to anyone, and will be going back as soon as I can!

Probably the most aptly named bar in Boston.  Especially considering the location abuts the State House.  You get a big star for that!

Clean bathroom?  OMG, are you serious?  That is five star worthy in and of itself.  A pretty waitress that was nice and efficient?  Throw another star up!  Food that is big in portions and pretty tasty?  Add a star!

Clean restaurant?  Yup!  It's quaint and small, but not tiny.  It's comfortable.  Just go, and you'll see what I mean.

This place is timeless!  The only thing constant is change, except when you step into the 21st Amendment.  It's like time stood still!

This place makes me want to move back to Beacon Hill.

    Five Stars!!

I've been here before for the food (which is great!), but last night we just wanted a chill place to kick back some beers.  We were at Scollay Square for dinner so just around the corner is this comfy neighborhood pub.

It was only 9pm so we scored 4 stools.  (About an hour later, the place was pretty happening.)  Almost immediately, we received service from a friendly waiter/bartender.  Throughout the evening, we were checked on quite a lot and everyone was uber friendly.   For you sports nuts who are wondering, yes, there were 2 flat screen tv's near the bar, giving us great views of sports news and a hockey game.

Besides the $5 beers, great service, historical posters, and cool atmosphere, the most amazing thing about this place is the super clean ladies room!  I had drank so much water at dinner and then 2 beers here that my bladder was about to explode!  I am usually one who does everything possible to avoid public restrooms but I simply could not wait to get home.  So I hesitatingly went to the bathroom and I thought I might have been feeling the effect of the beers.  I have never seen such a spotless bathroom in a bar!  And there was automatic foam hand soap to boot!!!  Just for the lovely facilities, this place gets 5 humongo stars.

Finally, we were all braindead and couldn't remember what the 21st amendment actually was.  (For the record, I said it had to do with the end of Prohibition but nobody believed me.)  We asked one of the bartenders on the way out and he knew what the 21st amendment was.  Yet more kudos for a staff that knows its American history!

Ok... I'm offically a fan of 21st Amendment. Triva tonight was a blast with great questions and an amusing host. Food was also really good - had a classic c-burger and fries, but others at my table had a southwest chicken salad and turkey panini all of which was quite satisfactory- and fairly priced.

The bar itself is also really cute- very hole-in-the-wall, but not dirty or grimey. Kind of an old Eurpoean tavern feel, with low cielings and dark wood, frosted glass windows and low lighting. It is a bit small and they are definately in need of more servers, but overall a very cute place and I'll be back some other night for sure.

The sliders here are phenomenal. I crave them... I have dreams about  them and their perfect assemblage and flavor combo. Ask anyone who knows me, I do.

But lest it be believed that I subsist only on hamburgers, I will add to the chorus of nacho admirers. Ooh, the nachos. Great cheese crust, even topping distribution. An example of nachos done right. I think I'm going to start me a list of all the places where I go to fuel my nacho obsession and these will be in my top 5.

Back to the 21st itself, it is terrific pub tucked away on the Hill. I like to go for lunch or in the uncrowded late afternoon for a few beers. Bonus: you can get a nice workout walking there.
