A disappointing visit to say the least.

First off, service is great.  Our waitress handled our table of 14 with grand efficiency, with a side of kindness!  Food didn't take long at all to come out.  Great viewing of numerous TV's, although all the big games were over by the time we got there.

The food on the other hand was a mixed bag.  About 1/2 our group enjoyed their food.  The other half Meh.

I ordered with Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and green beans.  The green beans were OK, but I've had better.  Mashed were Meh.  Not bad, not great.  The meatloaf, however, was the worst I've EVER had.  I don't think it was necessarily the meatloaf itself, but the sauce they put on it.  It had a weird, unpleasant taste.  I barely managed to eat 1/2 of it, which is really unusual.  I was very hungry, and I love meatloaf.

My wife had the Thai Noodles, left more than half on the plate.  Main problem there was lack of flavor, a common complaint among at least 5 of our group of 14.

I think from now on I'll stick to a burger or the Mac & Cheese, which was pretty decent on the visit prior to this one.  If they would put more of an emphasis on serving GREAT food as opposed to all-too-often MEH, I think they would do better.

By the way, their drinks are for the most part really good, and the prices aren't too bad.

This place is now on my poo poo list. Totally rude staff. They were designated the Michigan bar for a big game, so we went because we had Michigan friends in town. The hostess asked us if we'd be willing to sit at different tables. We asked if they were near each other and she said they weren't in the same section. We said we preferred to stay together. She proceeded to sit the next group at two side by side tables that they pushed together. When I asked why we didn't get those seats she said we didn't want them because they were in different sections. What? Totally bizarre. She proceeded to give me dirty looks the whole night. Plus, the food is still overpriced.

Food was good, service was extremely pleasant and took good care of us.  I enjoyed the seating... we sat inside but at the high-top tables in the open windows...

Selection is quite good, lots of options, food was yummy.  Thought the wings were very meaty and had the sesame ginger ones which came with a great wasabi aioli... yum!

The chili wasn't anything special but was meaty and good with a good bite without being too much of a bite.

French dip sandwich and sweet potato fries were tasty.

Great place to catch a Bruins game. Decent service. Lively, vibrant bar scene. Parking always available nearby & easily accessible by T.

Have been here few times but then they ended their Tuesdays wings special, which was really awesome. Super good, economical/cheap and worth 5 stars. But having ended that deal, have not been there much after that.

Decent burgers, Sweet potato fires & waffle fries. Super overblown desserts but overwhelming for one. Have gluten free menu as well.

Have to try the all you can eat brunch buffet yet maybe that will bring the stars up a notch.

The beer selection was great, waitress was friendly, but the cape codder was way too salty.

I was actually really blown away by the breakfast buffet here! What a spread!

Showed up around noon on St. Patty's Sunday, had no wait and the four of us were seated immediately. The waitress explained how the omelet ordering works, and we put our omelet orders in while we collected plates full of treats along the 20+ foot breakfast bar.

    Hashbrowns: awesome.
    Eggs: awesome.
    Salad: awesome.
    Fruit: awesome.
    Bacon: awesome.

There were about 75 other things I did not try that looked great; others in my group had eggs benedict, shephards pie, and more. No complaints from anyone. The omelets were SO good, I had two.

I don't often rave about breakfasts, but this place was deeeeelish. Spectacular breakfast buffet, and while $16 might seem steep, you get more than your money's worth if you come hungry. HIGHLY recommend.

I went to Tavern in the Square for their brunch buffet one morning. The food was very mediocre. Half of it was cold or it wasn't replaced fast enough and it was far too expensive. I might give this place another try for their dinner menu but their buffet is not worth the price.

Food is "meh", drinks are bland and expensive, and the staff acts like they work at McDonald's. Skip this; there's much better in the area.

Sunday brunch: Butterfinger pancakes, tomato/spinach eggs, shrimp, desserts & mimosas. That description barely scrapes the surface of the delicious array of food.

Everything was scrumptious with plenty of vegetarian options. Our waitress was pleasant and had a really cool tattoo. Gotta love that.

I love this place. I went here last night with a coworker and really enjoyed the experience. I ordered the Fall entree special (butternut squash with pistachio crusted chicken and balsamic dressing). My coworker ordered Chicken and Waffles which she also loved!. Both plates offered huge portion sizes, which could easily have been split. The one complaint I had was the noise level. The music and TVs were so loud we couldn't comfortably keep up a conversation. Next time, I'll ask for a table in the back room where it appeared to me a bit less chaotic.

I really enjoyed watching the Michigan game here the other weekend. It wasn't the most boisterous of alumni bars, but it did have delicious drinks (pumpkin beer comes with a cinnamon sugar rimmed glass) and tasty truffle tater tots. I suggest the alcoholic hot chocolate on a nippy fall day.

I'm really surprised to say that this has earned its way onto our local eating circuit. The food is a big step up from your typical bar food, though the atmosphere is still loud and over-stimulating.

I'm very happy with their vegetarian selection, including an arrugula pizza, a tomato-basil mozzarella sandwich with a balsamic glaze on focaccia, salads with real greens, and sweet potato fries. My meat-eating man always finds something juicy to eat, too, from steak to wings or burgers.

If you sit in the back, it's a little quieter. That's where they seat the families with young children. I'm a fan of eating back there instead of in the front by the bar.

I conducted an unintentional service experiment. I encourage you to try this when you can, I learned a lot.

I walked in looking for a cheeseburger and fries. I walked in, nobody was at the host stand, the place was pretty busy, it was a little after 9pm on a Sunday. I did not want to sit at the bar and I could not identify a hostess, so I sat at the end of the bar island that separates the bar from the tables, I chose the spot because it had a lot of TVs and I could see a lot of waitresses walking near there. I sat there for 5 minutes, I was a little frustrated because none of the waitresses walking near me would even look at me, let alone help me. So, I started my stopwatch.

20 minutes later... nothing had changed. So, I decided to see what I would have to do to get someone to acknowledge that I was there. At that point I put my head down on the table.

10 minutes later... nothing. So, I took my shoes off and set them near my chair. I kept my head down. I decided at this point, that I would add something every ten minutes until something happened.

8 minutes later...or so. Finally! After 38 minutes of timed testing. A tap on my shoulder, the bartender noticed me! He informed me that I needed to go if I could not keep my head up or shoes on. He probably thought I was either drunk or homeless. I was or am neither. I had no alcohol in me. I tried to explain what I was doing, he would not listen to me. I think he was scared, because he ran away from me. I sat up, put my shoes on and waited for something to happen.

Now, I set a goal for one hour. Over the next 22 minutes nobody talked to me.

It is interesting to note that for the last 22 minutes I turned around to observe the staff. At this point the poor waitresses probably all were scared of me or were still looking through me. I watched many of the staff doing sidework, a couple waitresses sat right in front of me to enjoy their post shift meal. The manager in the purple shirt stood near me talking to staff about the night and the customer complaints. Someone got thrown out, they had a lot of laughs about that.

Finally, at one hour, I left. I walked across the street and ordered a great panini at the deli. It was delicious!

You know what?  I've been to a couple TITS locations, and I have to say I enjoy this one the most.  The employees here really try hard to please, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and 4 stars.

When TITS isn't jammed (i.e. not on a friday/saturday night or when there is a big game on) service is generally very good.  Especially the bartenders here, they mix up strong drinks and are great to gab with.

When TITS is jammed, service usually slows down, but they don't turn into angry bitter asshats.  They will still serve you with a smile, it just may take them a lot longer.  But it goes without saying that this is a great place to catch a game, so as long as I've got a tall beer in hand and something to watch, I don't mind slow service.

The food at TITS is bar food that looks better on the menu than it is in real life.  It's all pre-made and/or frozen and way over salted, fried, cheesed, greezed, whatever.  But you're not coming here for the food, are you?  On the up side, you get a ton of it.

As I said, the bartenders mix great drinks.  The $4 bartender mystery shot isn't a bad deal if you don't mind something ultra sweet.  I was here once and the bartender was giving me what he called "Alien Orgasm" shots - amaretto and peach schnapps.  For $4, it ain't too bad.  They also have a decent beer selection and the tall 22oz beers are a decent value.

Last thing - the last time I was here, I got a fried pickles app that came out of the kitchen still frozen in the middle of the spears.  The waitress took it back to get a properly cooked batch, and the manager came over, apologized, and offered to comp it for us.  Now that's a lesson in how to treat your customers.

I visited this establishment last night with a fairly large group of former co-workers (10+).

    First, the good:

Great appetizers and good beer selection. The tots and fried pickles are really quite good.

    Now, the bad:

Slow service - all night long. Not even just slow - it was bordering on non-existent.

The restaurant was probably 75% empty for most of the night - but I still had to wait 10+ minutes each time I ordered a beer. Our waitress would disappear for periods of time and then told us she was leaving and someone else would help us. But - it wasn't until we asked where our last order of drinks was from another server that we received them.

Our entire party was disappointed in the service and treatment we received.

I would not recommend this restaurant.

First off, I promised myself I wouldn't touch the acronym. However, I have to say: Did you restaurant planners not consider that AT ALL? How about being Tavern ON the Square, or Tavern in A Square? You could have avoided this situation.

Tavern in the Square is one of the area bars where University of Michigan fans congregate to watch games. Living someplace where Wolverines are relatively rare, I appreciate hearing a roar from the crowd whenever U of M made a good play. Fun atmosphere for fans.

The beer selection is surprisingly good for a restaurant that takes its style cues from Pizzeria Uno. They have about 15 beers on draft, including a good selection of New England brews and a few rotating taps. All beers are available in pints or tall 23 ounce pilsners, and prices for the large ones seem to hover around $7.

The food . . . oy. You know when the menu has over 10 pages and covers a range of world cuisines that you're dealing with a jack of all trades and a master of none. I opted to play it safe with a burger, which was fine--very slightly overcooked, slightly burnt bun, but overall decent. It came with a huge mountain of fries. My husband's chicken sandwich was even more mediocre than the burger, though he too enjoyed a ludicrously large pile of fries (waffle, in his case).

Next time I come back to Tavern in the Square (do not type acronym, do not type acronym . . .) for a U of M game, I'll stick to beers. Go Blue!

So we decided to go for brunch.  On a Saturday.  Woe betide the Porterite who tries to go for brunch on a Saturday.  As if the lack of Christopher's isn't enough, we get stuck with this non-Sunday crap.

They have brunchy stuff on the menu all the time, and we thought to ourselves, hey, the normal food is a solid statement of generic palatability, why not the brunch?  Jesus.  Tell that to the runny and undercooked garden and western omelettes we ordered.  And the bacon and sausage we got on the side?  You guys!  It was so bad, WE LEFT SOME OF IT BEHIND.  Never in my life have I left a sweet, fugitive strip of bacon on my plate.  Bacon is PRECIOUS.  Bacon is to be RATIONED.  Bacon is the singular cherry atop the sundae.  AND WHAT $*&%WAD DOESN'T EAT THE CHERRY?!

The bill came to $30 for two entrees, some weep-worthy disappointing side meats, and coffee.  "You know what just happened here..." I asked Boyfriend.

"Yep," he replied.  "We just got hosed."

A group of us went to the brunch buffet today and I'm sorry to say I was not impressed. We got a table immediately and our server was attentive and friendly. There was a good selection of items but the food quality was horrible. They had a salmon with rice pilaf but the salmon was really dry and tasteless. The eggs benedict, green beans, pork tenderloin, and beef were all overcooked and luck luster in flavor. The blitzes, home fries, bacon & eggs were all pretty tasty. The deserts including the fresh fruit and make your own sundaes were good--hence the 2 stars. They had a nice selection of beers on tap and creative cocktail list which was also good.

Overall I was very disappointed in the food. Just about every meat and fish item was over cooked therefore not worth eating and definitely not worth the $19.95 price tag. I might be back for drinks but I will skip the food next time.

Also went there for the election results. Got a table, and the waitress Jane took great care of us all night. All TV's were set to the election coverage channels and the sound was on. The entire bar would get quiet everytime there was a CNN Projection which was really wierd since there were like 250 people in the place.

    Good times.

So, I've never actually eaten here but after today, I will definitely never eat at this place.
I was walking around the side of the building going to my car when I noticed a person from their kitchen staff outside talking on the phone. He was blowing his nose on his shirt and picking stuff out of his nose and wiping it on his apron.
Pretty gross if you ask me. If he was that comfortable doing so in broad daylight, I'm sure this isn't the first time. Sorry I can't comment on the food or the service. "Boogers" anyone.

Excellent Sunday Brunch, but for $16? That doesn't include juice, you know. It includes soda, coffee or tea, but not juice, which I think is more important to brunch than soda. Juice is $2.50 extra. For each glass.

But still, the brunch is really nice. Lots of breakfast foods, classic & new. Lots of little lunch finger foods and casseroles.

Even better are the desserts and ice cream sundae bar.

Three waiters helped my party of six. Very nice, very attentive. Although they didn't help us make room. We had to figure out how to seat 6 people at a table for 4.

Outside seating was very nice. Didn't see much of the inside.

ATM at the door charges $2.50 fee.

I was blown away by this place the first time I ate here.  I really wasn't expecting much: just some fried food and a game on the tube.  Holy shit did Tavern in the Square sneak up and surprise me like a pinch on the bottom from your boss.

First off, you're not going to find better service anywhere where the food cost less than $50 a plate.  Seriously, the service was spot on.  I had water within the first minute of sitting down at my table.  The waitress was polite and friendly, and always attentive.  Tavern in the Square does what most other places do not do: they have enough damn staff to actually wait on you.  We never were for want of anything, with our server checking up on us several times.  She was even aware of serving etiquette to the point where she always served the women first, then the men.  It was unbelievably refreshing the level of service we received.

The food itself is great.  The solid American food is better than anything else you can get for the price.  Plus, they have a wide range of interesting dishes--not just your normal burger and hot wing joint.  I enjoyed a lovely pistachio encrusted tuna.  The food comes out fast and hot.

And with the bar section well set off from the dining section, the yuppies at the bar can yammer on all they like while you can still hear your dinner partners.  Good for dates and drinks, and on the weekend a dj will be up there live spinning (the dj we had possessed no mixing skill whatsoever but redeemed himself by playing Journey every once and a while).

I was so impressed with our first visit that I went up to the desk and asked for the manager.  He came over wringing his hands like I was going to bring down the axe or something, but he was really grateful when I sang the Tavern's praises.

This is a typical beer + american-type dish place.  You can find a mixed crowd of sports fans and young professionals getting a few drinks.  The beer selection is decent although nothing sticks out.

It would be a safe bet for visiting friends, or a date.  While nothing sticks out as great, there are no bad surprises either!

    Food-wise, we had:
Ultimate Nachos: No guac.  Decent amount of non-tortillia stuff (4/5)
    Buffalo Chicken Sandwich: Average (3/5)
Waffle Fries: Delish, but oily (3/5)
    Pizza: thin-crust..tasted microwaved..(1.5/5)

Bottom line: Stay away from the pizza, but otherwise a decent place.

This place is difficult to think about because it's almost a hole in my mental map of Cambridge.  I completely forget that it exists until I walk right by it.

It's almost like a really bad food combination.  It's awkward and forgettable until you're faced with it again a year from now.  You vaguely remember trying it once, but can't seem to remember your reaction.  You try it again, and all the memories of eating that same disgusting food combo every year come vividly back to life.

It isn't until I walk in to the Tavern for a beer that I remember how utterly boring and unremarkable it is.  For there being several really good bars in the area, I'm at a loss for why anyone would go into this one.

    One star for serving alcohol.

Was that even moderately coherent?  God this day is going by slowly.

    Went here for dinner.
Loaded the jukebox up with Journey and Guns and Roses.
    No one seemed to care.
    Met my friend Tim there.
    We got beers.
The bartender told me that my beer choice, the Longtrail Blackberry Wheat, seemed a little tainted, and might I want something else?
I chose Franziskaner and thought that he was a very thoughtful bartender.
They decided to go with a mix of Politics and Sports on the TV.
Good for conversing with strangers, I suppose.
Met my girlfriend there for dinner.
Sat down, was served very promptly

And the food was really really good.
    Which surprised me.
    Seriously.
That's where the 4 stars came from.
Because if they didn't have that, they'd be boring.

You know what, this place wasn't so bad. Russ and I needed a quick meal before headed out for the night, so we thought we'd give this place a shot. It has a lot of things going for it -- large TVs (although FILLED with sports), great beer selections, and a variety of patrons. The bar was pretty big, lots of bar seating, and tons of table space, plus it's RIGHT by the T (perfect on a cold night, or if you just need to meet a friend for a quick drink before heading home to Davis/Porter.

As for the food, I wasn't that impressed by my Truffle Mac and Cheese, however it came out quickly and there was a lot of it and it made a most successfully lunch reheat. I don't recommend it for a full meal though. Not cheesy enough and too much, I'm afraid.

However, Russ's Tuna rocked and I was a huge fan of their Risotto Fritters. In fact, I would come back and knock back some of those and enjoy a delicious beer.

I'm at a loss, part of me wants to give this place 3 stars because of all the Sports, but the other part of me wants to give it 4 stars because of happy, quick service, beer selection and being a better version of most restaurants of it's ilk.

3.8 stars (though I will put down four), and a recommendation that you check out the Risotto Fritters and think on this place as a good spot to grab a drink in Porter after work!

I am in the unique position to review a few food items, because I picked at my friends' dishes ;).

French Onion Soup - so so.
Margherita Pizza - pretty damn good.
Waffle Fries - pretty damn good as well, nicely seasoned.
Buffalo Chicken Fingers - ding ding ding! These were excellent.

Besides that, we were seated quickly and the staff was helpful and friendly. Nice decor. I found myself wishing the sports bar near me (Coolidge Corner Clubhouse) was this nice.

I kinda wish I could give this place a 3 1/2 stars. The food is a 4, but the price is really a 3. See all those flat screen tvs in there? Well you're paying for them with every meal. Their brunch buffet is 16 dollars a person, and if you're petite like me, you're not really going to make this a good deal. Don't get my wrong, though, the brunch was fantastic, so you're probably paying for all the options you get, from custom made omlettes, to granola and fresh fruit, to the standard heart cloggers, and even a couple of show cased lunch items at the end of the buffet.  I'm glad they're in town though, if not just to give Christopher's a run for their money.

Staff is always really nice and service is impeccable.

What the world Does NOT need right now is another sports bar chain like restaurant.  If you beg to differ, than stop by Tavern - you will NOT be let down.  Only bonus is they have Gritty's Christmas Ale and one bartender is a pretty cool sh**

The only thing that even places this location on my radar is their brunch.  It was excellent and the whole newness was a bonus. They had a smashing omelet station that did NOT let down. The guy cooking them was a hoot. I never saw someone make an omelet with so much love. Or maybe I was just super hungry and feeling a little weak, so I misconstrued the whole scene. My "SO" was in heaven.....big screens and bacon?   Yeah...I know. Doesn't take much.

Either way.......I give this place four spanks for brunch....one spank for being ANOTHER Chain like sports establishment.

I went there on a Saturday night after spending way too much damn time with all the last minute shoppers.  I give the ambiance 4 stars for sure, because it was nice and quiet during our meal.  (I knock a star off for the gigantic TV behind my head that was distracting my girlfriend.)

We ordered wine and I ordered a sangria.  The sangria was cold and crisp and pretty much everything I wanted it to be at the time.  An appetizer of calamari followed and it was good calamari, with some hot peppers thrown in for good measure.  Not too battered or greasy, either.

Next was my Cobb salad, which was loaded with fresh avocados, grilled chicken and other delicious items.  Very good balsamic dressing.  My girlfriend had the steak and blue salad, which she seemed to like very much,

To top it off, we ordered the chocolate molten cake, which is my girlfriend's personal favorite.  Not only did she love it, I loved it too, which is not the norm.  It had two scoops of ice cream with cookie crumbs underneath and a mini pitcher of chocolate sauce to pour over it.  The perfect ending!

    UPDATE:
We recently ordered the chocolate molten cake for takeout, which I figured was a bad idea but we were desperate.  When we arrived, we realized that it was Saturday and most people were actually out, so it was pretty crowded.  We were directed to the bar to get our order.  The bar was packed.  So, while our ice cream is melting, we are trying to force our way in with no help from the staff.  Bad takeout system!  Perhaps they are trying to discourage takeout- mission accomplished!  And to top it off, they didn't give us the lovely crumb sprinkles that went underneath the ice cream the last time.  As eloquently as I can put it, they sucked!  Minus one star.

Tavern is only 2 weeks old and opened by the folks who own Joshua Tree and The Playwright. It has a very similar feel, although there's a ton of tvs.

I had the pistachio tuna salad, it was very good. I also ordered a vodka gimlet, first one with no ice and the second on the rocks. I noticed that on my bill they had charged me an extra $1 for the one on the rocks. What?! That really doesn't make any sense.

I'm glad this place is in my neighborhood!  It's right above my gym, so if I want to destroy my hard work with boooze this is the place to do it.

In all seriousness, it feels like a chain restaurant, but it;s a nice spot to have nearby.  Just a 5 min walk from my house is a place with lots of flatscreens to watch games or so my bf can watch the game and I can watch CNN or something at least mildly entertaining instead of meatheads in spandex pants slapping each other's asses.  But I digress.

The food isn't incredible but it's definitely good enough.  The menu is diverse so it's a good place to go with people whose preferences you're unsure of.  Not so good for indecisive people like moi.  My bf and I went for a nice date the other night.  It was Sunday, aka the day I abandon healthy eating for comfort food.  We split the chicken lettuce wraps which were really tasty and came with delicious sugary sauces.  It's an app that can def. be a meal (or two).  Lettuce wraps always crack me up because they are usually 1,000 grams of sugar and fried noodles masquerading as health food (duh! lettuce is healthy), but these were damn tasty.  We also split the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and broccoli which was tasty.  The portions are really big, so splitting an app and an entree was plenty enough food.

Great place for a date, to watch a game, to watch someone watch a game, to eat, or to drink.  Welcome to my neighborhood, Tavern.

I like this better than the one in Central so far.   The crowd is a little older and less "Blue dress shirt with slacks drinking a bud lite".  Really easy spot to get to, and a good range of beers on tap (though they don't seem to rotate these enough yet).

added upon re-visiting a few times:  Slightly on the pricey side for drinks. The food is decent, a little above average bar quality, with a nice big menu. I think the novelty of having an option like this in Porter is starting to wear on me a bit, and the loud overdressed after work yuppie crowd it's drawing now is a bit of a put-off.

It's great that Porter has a nice sports bar, but that's kind of all they were going for here.  "Nice Sports Bar."

The food is really pretty good, and they will fulfill your undercooked meat fantasties.  The drinks are a tad expensive, but they have some harder to find bottled beers on their special list (Purple Haze, anyone).

The thing that got me was the screens.  They have enormous flat screen TVs, literally, a foot apart.  It's difficult to maintain eye contact with someone.  Back in undergrad (urban planning), I had a professor who swore that the future of city design was interactive media, and to him, this included big digital displays everywhere.  Well, I've seen his future, it's Tavern on the Square, and I'll gladly buy him a burger to show him that it's awful.

Damn, I was sure I was going to be first. Had we not gone to Toad afterwards I probably would have gotten it too.

This may now be the closest bar to our condo. O'Sullivan's might be closer, not sure. Either way, their burgers are certainly WAY better than at Sullivan's. I got the jalapeo stuffed burger which was delicious and disappointing all at the same time. It was a good burger, it just wasn't really stuffed; I think there was just a single jalapeo in it, and I never did find any cheese other than what was sitting on top of it. Still a damned good burger though.

Their onion rings are pretty good too. I would just make one change to improve them: add some spice. A little bit of cayenne pepper in the batter or something would make them absolutely perfect.

My only real complaint about this place is the menu. I've noticed a trend lately where every restaurant seems to feel the need to serve every dish imaginable. This place is no exception. The menu is like a small novel, and I had a hard time figuring out what I wanted due solely to the sheer volume of choice. On top of that, there's no real unifying theme to the dishes they offer so you get the impression that it's just a bunch random dishes all thrown in together which makes it even harder to choose.

But I intend to go back to try more of their pretty huge beer selection and their pretty huge menu. Nice place to catch a game too.

    The new Tavern!
I went to drinks on the second day of opening (last night) to visit my hot friend who works there Anastasia.
They have a pretty decent selection of beers, I had an oatmeal stout from London which was super tasty and there seemed to be a lot of other beers I would have liked to try.

I wasn't going to eat, but the maple fries looked irresistible so I ordered a plate of them, which was huge!
And by far the tastiest french fry concoction I have tasted.

Although I liked the ambiance, new, modern, and simple I have to knock off a star for the lack of vegan dishes and the strange view of all the Bally fitness people that I had to look since our table was near the stairway.

Overall I liked being there and will return.
