The Crossing is a below average pub in a city with a multitude of pub options. The nachos are terrible - unlayered, with ingredients that seem like they were borrowed from the nearby Subway. The bartender is unattentive, and when I've ordered cocktails from here, they've tasted a bit watered down. The various sandwiches and burgers here are merely okay. Unless you are desperate to catch a sports game and are unable to venture to a proper sport bar, I can't say that there is a good reason to come here.
Review Source:The Crossing is my favorite bar on Mission Hill. Â They have the best deals on food and drinks and a friendly wait staff. Â On Mondays they have $4 pizzas, and on Thursdays $1.50 tacos. Â My favorite is probably the chicken fajita wrap with sweet potato fries, and the calamari! Â Definitely stop by if you are looking for a good local bar. Â Good for groups and dates!
Review Source:The Crossing is one of our favorite lunch spots when we're back in the Wentworth neighborhood (my husbands alma-mater)
The food is always tasty, they always put a creative spin on everyday dishes. We love the Crossing calamari, it's way better than the normal fried calamari with marinara, the Crossing calamari is golden and crispy then smothered in spicy Thai chili sauce, we devour the humongous serving just us two! Â The salads are always fresh and loaded up, not what you usually see at a bar, burgers are juicy and beers are ice cold, and did I mention how much food you get for the price!? We always look forward on going back
I'm surprised at the way higher ratings people have given it cuz my meal was pretty bad. Friend and I both got a blue cheese burger verifying that it was blue cheese on the burger and not blue cheese salad dressing. It said 8 oz burger but you could make it 12oz if you want which is easy for them because they serve you two overdone 4 oz patties rather than a nicely grilled 8 oz burger. Friend ordered med rare and I ordered medium but both were totally well done and previously frozen (I assume), they also had almost a meatloaf taste to them. The roll was quite chilly (altho not bad), came with a lot of onion rings but not the thin crisp batter style. We were the only 2 eating there yet no one checked on us (or the piles of food we left behind) and it took a while to get a check. Prices are indeed great made better by a 1/2 price coupon but as someone else said, with Flan's, The Mission and Penguin (and now Soulfilre!) right there, doubt I'll go back.
Review Source:Pretty good experience here - the chicken fajita wrap was surprisingly good for bar food (think 4+ stars good) and the prices were quite reasonable as well. Â But the service was slow, especially for a Tuesday night with no one else in the place except for our group of four. Â And although you expect things to be a little on the sticky side in that type of atmosphere, The Crossing was almost uncomfortably sticky - the tabletop, the menus all were a little gross to the touch.
However, I'm willing to overlook that based on how solid my wrap was. Â I'd definitely go again just for that, but I'll be prepared for a little barroom stickiness this time around.
I go here almost every monday night for the 25 cent wings and a pitcher of beer. its great little pub. Â mostly college kids looking for a place to hang out here. it does get crowded so show up as early as possible if you want to grab one of the 6 tables. I am not sure how this place is on any other night of the week but i am sure it isnt bad.
Review Source:You know the weird thing about Boston? There are no real sports bars. Â Seriously, bear with me here.
Because every place--even nice restaurants--has a TV tuned to the Sox/Pats/Celts/Bruins at all times, there aren't as many places you can go to watch a million games at once as there are in other cities.
The Crossing will tune to the Texans game for me, which is very important. (Shut up, we're gonna actually do it this year!) Their drinks are relatively cheap and relatively strong and service is extremely friendly. Â They even helped us root for Rice football one Saturday afternoon (a losing proposition if ever there was one, trust me.)
I'm sure it gets crazy busy, but all the times I've been in it hasn't been too loud--enough for fun, not enough for headache. The potato skins are really good.
The burger was too greasy for me, but hey, it's a personal choice. Next time I'll just get two orders of potato skins.
This place needs to learn CUSTOMER SERVICE! The bar tender was a total douche! I ordered 4 drinks not bad $25 total which included tip :) So when ordering my drinks I ordered 2 first and then asked for 1 more. Then my friend decided to order a beer which wasn't even my fault & the bar tender yelled at me and asked me what my problem was. After he came back with the last drink he asked me sarcastically if that was all I wanted. RUDE MUCH! I wish he handled things better the bar wasn't even busy. Then when I handed him my card he told me the credit card machine wasn't working, what is that? We had drinks 5 mins before and used the card...Before that when we were at our table our waitress asked us several times to pay our tab off. Then finally she really stressed the point that we should pay the tab off because someone else was taking over her shift, still I don't think that was very professional of her, I mean don't you get half of the tip anyway if she worked half the shift? We were here Thursdays which is karaoke night! our buddy actually went up & sang. I would've totally sang as well because the bar is not big & I was a visitor from out of state. Song selections were good, I think the beer selection is good as well, I had a stella
Review Source:The drinks here are pretty cheap. Â But our waitress was unpleasant to deal with. Â She kept trying to push us to pay our tab right away after ordering. Â My conclusion is because she was getting off of her shift. Â Still not okay to do in my books. Â It came off rather rude. Â Other than that we were already pretty drunk when we got here. Â They have kareoke on Thursday nights. Â So much fun and I wish I can give this place a better rating, but I can't with the service that was provided.
Review Source:The Crossing does have a divey feeling. Yes they have brunch, yes they have a menu with food, but the food is just "ok". The burgers you can tell are just frozen patties and all the fried food I'd predict is also just frozen as well.
The beer is cheap. I'd put them second in the cheapest places to drink in Mission Hill. The bartenders are well above average even though the best of the bunch is no longer working there.
I go back and I like to drink, but I also live near bye and use several options. I guess you just need to go in and check it out for yourself.
Yes they have Big Buck hunter. It is safari mode
Mild wings, cheap pitchers of watery beer, a menu stretched so thin you can see through it and an accessibly jejune decor...
Not bad, not great but my goodness gracious there are much better choices just a few yards up the street. Â But... if you think Bud on tap is the hallmark of quality and you're looking for a night out in Mission Hill for the low low price of 10$ a head then the Crossing is your scene of choice.
When I found out that my office was closing on Wednesday due to the snow and ice, I took the opportunity to check out The Crossing and I'm glad I did. Â 3.5 stars rounded up.
Laid back, divey kind of place. Â The bartender, Mike, was real friendly and mixed up some strong ass rum and cokes. Â They had the Bruins game going on one flat screen, the C's game on another, and like Biggest Loser on the last one - point being that it would be a good spot to catch a game.
Tried a cheese quesadilla and the turkey club sub (special) and both were fine, especially for how cheap they were. Â 8 drinks between me and the wifey, plus the grub, came to $68 before tax and tip.
The best part - at around 9PM, Mike broke out a cornhole box and bags and we got to play right in the tiny bar. Â A lot of fun, especially since half the teams had never played before (a big shout out to all my midwestern friends that introduced me to the wonders of cornhole years ago!)
Talking to Mike, apparently Wednesdays are trivia night, Thursdays are karaoke night (though he said that the KJ had taken a long break since Christmas and wasn't sure when it was starting back up again) and Fridays are live music.
Also noteworthy, $8 pitchers of Bud Light (the website says Rolling Rock but they didn't have RR when I was there).
Last thing I want to mention is, yes, it's full of NEU students getting drunk and crazy. Â 1/3 of them in hoodies or fleece sweatshirts, 1/3 of them in rugby-esque long sleeve polos, and the last 1/3 in layered long sleeve t's under short sleeve t's. Â And 90% of the crowd on a snowy Tuesday night was dudes.
Average local dark pub with a decent beer selection and ok food. This is really a local bar and you can definitely spot the regulars. I will say that my waitress was very accomodating and the bartender was super friendly. Unfortunately they have a limited dinner menu (not sure if their day/afternoon menu differs) so don't go in expecting a full menu later in the evening. Typcial bar food - nachos, wings, etc...
Review Source:How does an average to humble bar maintain a 4 star rating (in my book at least) over the course of a year? Easily. By luring me in with inexpensive drinks on my way home from work and slaying me with kindness and alcohol every single time. This is becoming one of my go-to bars in Mission Hill. Which is quite funny because 'go-to' means I have to 'walk-by' it anyway. HA HA. Jokes on my liver and wallet. HA HA. But, I really like this place. I can always get a space at the bar after work and they are now serving some rather good, life sustaining bar grub. You know, burgers, wings, pizza. Nothing to knock your socks off but, well, does bacon pizza with a nice IPA ever treat you wrong? Or a turley burger w/ mango salsa and a Stella? For a long time they were doing pizza deals with the pie-shop next door and that was fine but now I can face plant into a basket of wings and a few cans of Narg before tipping the scales in favor of vitamin Scotch. All in all, a humble, fun, easy bar experience. A bar to set the standards of judging other bars by.
Review Source:Where else can you ask for a White Russian and have them fill you up with the rest of their Kahlua later on when you're halfway done with your drink? Yeah that's right - the Crossing thankyouverymuch. I stopped by here about a year ago with some friends and it was pretty much empty except for a firefighter who had just moved into town. Apparently the old owner ended up selling the place and it appears to be in good hands.
I mean, with both License to Ill & Ill Communication on the jukebox, you can't go wrong! And Lady Gaga too if you're into her.
Come here when you're in the Brigham Circle area, or, ya know, just around, and you'll be happily satisfied.
The Crossing recently opened, replacing Ye Olde Curtin's Roadside Tavern (thank GOD!) - I've been going there more and more in recent months, and it has now become my regular bar, more or less.
Drink prices are totally reasonable, especially the beer ($2.50 pints of PBR, or a pitcher for $8.00!!), and the owner has been kind of enough to keep a solid stock of the new Stoli Gala Apple vodka for me as well. The bartenders are all great, and super friendly, and it's a fairly rotating schedule, so you don't really deal with the same person every night.
The place tends to be pretty mellow in the afternoon/early evening, but by 10:00pm the crowd filters in, and it gets a little more interesting (as other reviews have said, total mix of Mission Hill folk, random young professionals, college kids, etc. - eclectic crowd that totally reflects the overall feel of Mission Hill in general)
I would definitely recommend The Crossing to anyone who just wants to stop in for a drink by themselves, and for small groups as well - there is plenty of seating around the space for small gatherings.
They don't have a kitchen yet, but people are encouraged to get food from wherever and bring it in, if they want.
I would say to definitely stop in, and give it a try!
This has offically has become "my" bar. After my little fiasco with The Stork Club, I came here. I mean were else in Boston can you get a pitcher and 2 shots for around $20? Rum and coke with a beer $10? I'm there!
There's no "I'm better than you" attitude here and almost feels like home to me. Buisness men, Seniors, Mission Hill residents and College Kids all mingle here like the melting pot that Mission Hill is, and I love it. The music is such a mix of everything that it feels like I'm listening to my iTunes.
The service is great, but then again I like it when people remember me because it makes me feel like they WANT my buisness, hell even asking for it!
Only 4 Star? After all the drinking, I'd actually like something to munch on and they don't sell any food :-( or have pretzels or popcorn.
