I give it 5 stars. Not for the location or setting but for the AWESOME karaoke and the amazing food. The private rooms only cost $75 and hour and that can easily be covered with food and drinks. The service was really good and the owners were so nice. The place is very hole-in-the-wall type place.

Cheap and decent Japanese tapas and sushi and drinks.
I was apprehensive about going to GENJI bc I heard it's dangerous, past shootings or whatnot, but they do have a security guard so that made me feel better.

It's an open karaoke bar, but there's also private rooms. The big room in the corner is $70/hr minimum, but if you get bottle service that covers that. I've only been in the big room so I'm not sure if the rates for the smaller rooms might be less. From the American songs database you can switch the system over to the Korean system, which uses a different book, separate remote, whole separate thing. just in case you wanted to sing those korean songs !

The staff is pleasant and attentive. It may be harder to get their attention when it gets busy, but they're always nice.
Overall, a night of karaoke is always fun ! and yummy. and safe :)

This was my first visit to a karaoke bar, as opposed to a bar that offers karaoke.

It's definitely a hole in the wall but we had an absolute blast. The drink prices were pretty reasonable, and so were the rates to rent a private room, which we did.

    I would definitely go back.

Love this place. Love it more because its closer to home now. This is a great place to eat drink and sing. My friends and I have had several birthdays, graduation parties and more here and it never gets old. They have more private rooms than the old location. I like the big room for bigger parties. The food there is amazing and you can't beat the price. the ladies genii special is the best $5 drink you can get. Best part is that you can dress or down, everyone is so chill there.

Genji's is always a fun place to go to hang out, sing, eat, and drink, drink, drink.

Service is always good and the owner is super nice.

If you don't finish your bottle of liquor, they will hold it for you until next time. (I've always loved this idea)

Food is delicious.  I've never ordered anything I haven't liked.

I just don't understand how the new location smells like the old location!?!!!? I mean, seriously!

Genji is a great place to bring your coworkers after work. A very causual laid back environment with karaoke going on in the main dining room. Private rooms are also available. They have a Large menu selection with decent prices. We always get the beef tongue, beef salad, and salted chicken wings. One thing I'm not too pleased with is the service. Staff is very friendly but they give very minimal service and its very hard to flag one down to get another round or order anything.

This establishment has been here for a really long time, but recently just relocated to a different area. Although the place is larger and there's more private rooms, they did not renovate it, seeing that they used the same exact furniture from the old genjis. The bathroom is also larger and cleaner, which was very much needed! Although the place still looks a bit ghetto, in my opinion. They do have a rent a cop there every night now.

With that being said, the alcohol and food is fairly cheap. They even allow you to order half bottles, which cost half of the full ones. Mr.Genjis is even nice enough to keep the bottles that customers do not finish and save it for them. All you need to do is ask him and he'll write your name on it. The food is also good, the sushi is fresh and I've never complained.

The place does fairly good on weekdays, but it tends to get really crowded on Friday and Saturday to the point that there's no available tables. I also noticed a lot of people pre drink here on weekends, so by 12 am, it gets less crowded. The private rooms also runs out really quickly on weekends, so call ahead to see if there's any available. To get a room though, you have to spend a certain amount every hour. So if you rather just sing for free, there's always the main room.

Although I stopped going to genjis for awhile, I tend to always find myself back. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere gets really nice once you have a few shots in your system. I really recommend this place for a group of friends who just wants to sing and not spend a lot on liquor.

This is the third relocation for Genji's since it has been open (or I've been too) and this is the best spot yet. It takes over an old sushi restaurant (Nara). There is more room with higher ceilings. It doesn't feel like a cave or dungeon as much anymore. There are more tables and the bar area is larger too. The restrooms are clean (for now).

The food here is always good and the drinks are cheap. The menu has light snacks, rice bowls, noodles, and more. So do what your stomach wants and feed it. So if you want to have a good time singing, eating and drinking come to this spot. Genji's can get pretty busy on the weekends. The staff is very friendly and the food and drinks come out quickly.

The parking can get full but you can park in the back near the French restaurant.

    Their grilled squid is awesome!!!!

All other food like UDon, Katsu don tastes good as well.

like from what other people said, their restrooms are small and fairly acceptable. But they moved wilcrest and westheimer. I will definitely try it out there!

Came here tonight with some friends. It's an okay sit down karaoke place. Drinks are kinda cheap, and they have a wide variety of karaoke songs. It was pretty fun, the crowd is very nice and welcoming. Takes a long time to sing, but it's expected at places that have karaoke. I would go back. They also have 2 private rooms to rent for like $50/hr.

My first thought when I saw this joint from the outside was how run down it looked. As I walked in, the place seemed only slightly nicer. The entire room was pretty dark, with lights only at the bar and from the big projector screen in the back. Chairs and tables looked pretty old, but it was too dark to see clearly.

This place is a relatively small restaurant with an open karaoke bar (basically everyone in the restaurant can hear you singing) where each table can make song requests and then wait for their turn to sing. Occasionally you get really good singers, but most of the time is just people butchering up songs. It's funny but also annoying, and it's a long wait until your turn to sing. They also have two private rooms which still use ghetto box TVs... Didn't know those still existed!

Service was friendly and fast, but my friends and I went after midnight and there weren't that many people there. Drinks were decent but the food was not that great. We only ordered appetizers, but the texture of the calamari was nasty like rubber, not fresh at all. The chicken nuggets and spring rolls weren't that great either. I have nothing to say about their sushi though because I have yet to try any. But I doubt I would ever suggest to go back to this place for a meal. Maybe just to grab drinks and sing with a group of friends.

At first, I wasn't sure what to think of this place. During my first visit here, as my friend and I were walking up here to meet up with a few friends, he says to me, "oh, so this place has had a couple of shootings and used to be a little scary but they have a rent-a-cop now so don't worry." Perfect, my mind was right at ease.

Besides the whole grungy look, this place is actually pretty fun! Everyone sort of keeps to themselves, drinks, and badly sings along to the karaoke songs. The alcohol is pretty cheap here as well as the food. I'm not sure what I ate here (I know, what a useful review) but everything I had was great. Obviously it was mostly Japanese food.

The next time I swing by here, I'll try to at least remember wtf I ate.

Let's face it.  Everyone "always goes to Genji" and it's everyone's "spot."

I'm not hating, I'm embracing it.  If you're reading this, I have probably taken a shot with you, or I tried to sing a long with your party.

Regardless of why you come here, or how often you do (I'm looking at you, sis) this place guarantees a good time with a story to tell.

Now after the numerous visits, here's why they are only A-OK (3 stars) in my opinion.

FIX YOUR NASTY BATHROOMS.  I have literally been robbed blind by Mr. Genji and I feel like it was enough money for him to clean the restrooms and or fix the doors and latches.  Maybe, I don't know, an automatic hand dryer?  Maybe soap that wasn't bought at the gas station before 7PM?

If the restrooms were clean, then you could only blame nastiness on the drunks that stumble in there.  (I have never sat on the toilet or thrown up in their restroom, but if it was nice and clean, I'm sure I'd be straight chillin in there.)

The whole issue with split checks?  It's really not that hard, but I guess they just don't like doing it.  I know it's a pain in the ass, especially when you're dealing with people who are drunk, but maybe sometimes it's okay? Or if it's under like 7-8 people?

We all have that one cheap ass friend who ditches before the bill comes.

In the end, I still love this place because the drinks are fairly cheap, the food is delish, and I love how nobody ever gets up to sing.  (Their private rooms are cool too.)

Please, Mr. Genji, please add some new songs and clean those sticky binders!  That one Alicia Keys song, I'm on a boat, lady gaga before she was born this way, I mean come on!

Oh, and if someone stops singing a song half way through (because they suck and they're too drunk) they should automatically change it to the next song!  I shouldn't have to wait for little girls who can't rap before I can butcher Katy Perry!

Genji's is definitely one of a kind!  I actually walked in here on my last visit around 7pm (I know, that is very early for this place.)  Anyway, the lights were turned up and you could really "appreciate" Genji's "atmosphere."  Ok, let's face it, everything is old and tired in here - booths are beaten up (and are a very odd turquoise color) and the carpet is possibly older than I am.  The menu (if you dare to eat), is a combination of Asian fare (which also includes sushi strangely enough).  Nothing that I have tried blows you away (although, the last thing I tried there - the chicken nuggets, were pretty good.)  It is very cheap, which is always appreciated.

The drink prices are excellent and they pour them strong!  This provides an excellent environment for the budget Karaoke.  So, I am pretty sure all of the lyrics aren't quite the same as the original recordings so they could avoid paying royalties.  Also, the backdrop for the lyrics is 80's, Eastern European babes that don't look all that happy.... Anyway, you will have to check it out yourself to get the full effect.  Another cool thing is that the Karaoke "DJ" will bring the microphone to your table.  Usually, if you put in more than one song, they will let you sing them back to back.  Even though that Karaoke is knock off, they do have a very good selection of songs.  This place has a very different feel than most Karaoke bars, so don't feel bad about singing anything obscure.  It's all good here.

As mentioned in other reviews, it can be a little hit or miss.  It seems to pick up as the evening goes on.  The hours say 7pm-2am, but I am pretty sure they will stay open if there is still a crowd.

If you have never been to Genji's, it's a must try.  Plus, they will let you sing Frank Sinatra unlike some other Karaoke bar I won't mention.

I'm never quite sure if I am the unwary victim of a Japanese hidden camera show when I go to this place.

There always seems to be at least one group of youngish, yakuza looking fellows adorned with tattoos and fitted hats sitting around a table with a half bottle of alcohol, which the house provides at a very reasonable price I might add.

Then something strange happens.  These same chaps pull the hoods of their sweatshirts back from their face, grab the microphones and then you are transported in to a mystical land where the producers of Tokyo Drift and Glee decided to come together and spawn something seemingly Kafkaesque, but magical in the same right.  The young, yakuza, falsettos begin to sing old R&B songs in a digitally enhanced tune of A and the journey truly begins.

I was recently afforded the distinct pleasure of witnessing a member of one of these same groups performing Michael McCary's portion of "I'll make love to you" by Boys II Men verbatim, but from memory.  That part of the song happened to be omitted from the karaoke machine's closed captioning.  I was admittedly quite impressed, to say the least.  As were the stock group of hanadai.

But this place was also referred to as the best, truly, Japanese place in Houston by some local chefs.  I can not go that far out on a limb but I do enjoy the food.

The grilled whole squid, grilled mackerel and a $45 half-bottle of choice liquor are a must accompaniment to my ear-torching rendition of "Welcome to the Black Parade."  **I apologize in advance.**

And to the group of 8 solo guys who absolutely "needed" to get that private room together to sing songs that were made popular by Madonna - I am not exactly sure as to what kind of movie you were trying to make.

    End scene.

I went 3 days ago, a wednesday night at 8pm.

preface: i dont drink, i dont party, i dont go out (much).

it was my brother's friend's (a childhood friend's) birthday so i met them there at 8. I walked in the door and saw my brother and old friends so i sat down. Turned out there were two birthday parties there that night. I was sitting at the wrong table.

I left at 10pm and it was pretty full. It wasnt completely packed, but business is def good.

Genji is one of those places that can be a hit or a miss at any given day.  Sometimes when I go, I get great service; other days, I barely get any.
Back in the days, this place was always so packed on weekends. So packed that you had to get here early to get seats or you'd have to wait a little bit. But since Genji was featured a few times in the news for shootings, I feel like the place has slowed down a little bit.

The food here is surprisingly delicious. However, the portion (I think) is pretty small.  For you karaoke lovers, they have pretty good song selections and I feel like they get updated quite a bit.  But, like a lot had mentioned, this place does ooze a feel of ghettoness with some of the younger asian gangsta wannabes. But the older crowd (And when I say old, I mean 30+ish) that has been coming here since years ago still makes appearances and kind of calm the place down a little bit.

Prices are pretty reasonable. I always come here with a bunch of people and I never really spend that much money on drinks and/or food. I haven't had any bad experience here (yet - knock on wood), but my car's never been broken into (a lot of people complain about this), there hasn't been a shooting and/or fight when I'm here. Yes,. I've seen quite a few drunks, but you see them everywhere.

The last time I went, they had a police officer keeping guards, so that helps with the rowdy crowds. I guess they eventually decided that the shootings and the fighting were a little too much to handle

All in all, Genji is still a fun place to go if you want to karaoke and eat and just kind of hang out.

I'm surprised how many people didn't mention how downright dirty this place is. It smells like cigarettes and B.O.! Also, the tables are etched with various drawings and couples' initials and the floors and windows could use some cleaning. But what I absolutely hate about Genji is their ladies restroom. It is awful. The toilet pipe is infested with mold and some other strange substance, so I would advise anyone who has to use the RR to do so carefully and ONLY if you really, really, really need to.

As far as the food, Genji has pretty delicious yakiniku and beef tongue. Soft, succulent and seasoned well. Their sushi is average, but not bad. It's pretty safe to order and I've never had anything that tasted "off". The thing that keeps people coming back (I presume) are the low prices and having an easy, fun time at the karaoke section. Just a note: this is not a fancy place whatsoever. You can literally come in here wearing your pajamas and I'm sure nobody would say anything.  The service is good. The waiters are nice and the food/drinks come out really fast.

If you come here, I recommend getting some Asahi and pairing it with some yakiniku or beef tongue! Mellow dish and it'll keep you satisfied for awhile (it comes with rice).

After seeing their toilets (seriously, how does it pass health codes?), I'm afraid to imagine what their kitchen looks like and what grows in there.

My experience with Gengi's plays out like an episode of Full House where I learned not to judge a book by its cover.

I have always avoided Gengi's because it has that reputation and because it always pops up in the news as the latest scene of aZn GaNg$tErZ shooting each other after singing karaoke. But I ended up here after some emotional blackmailing on the part of friends. I made my displeasure extremely clear by adopting a scowl. The theory being that if I'm going to get shot at least my shooter will know I was displeased with the entire scenario from start to end.

Upon arriving I wanted to turn around and leave. Three cops, randomly strewn furniture, and a sea of somewhat drunk spiky haired kids. But the owner rushed up to us, found us a table, and summoned a waitress who breezily took our order. In less than 15 minutes from my arrival I had food, this never happens. My scowl was looking more like a "I'm sitting uncomfortably on my wallet" face. After eating we were given a room to go sing karaoke and went through a series of songs. The waitress kept up with us and made sure we had plenty of food and drinks. At this point my scowl had disappeared.

So, there you have it. I made it out alive. I wasn't shot and I feel silly for being so scared of Gengi's. The karaoke selection is decent and the food isn't terrible. $40 for karaoke and food wasn't too steep either. I probably wouldn't go back since there are other karaoke spots in Houston but at least now it is an option. And that is progress right?

This place is embarrassing.  I entered wearing jeans, shoes, and a decent button down expecting some respectable bar.  Wrong.

There are spikey haired underage kids (oh yeah, come here if you want to drink illegally.  Seriously - they'll serve you.)  here wearing wife beaters, basketball shorts, and too much hair gel.  It's messy, feels dirty, and the bartenders don't know what the drink you asked for is.

It's mostly an uncomfortable experience unless you go with a large group and get drunk.  Won't be going back, mostly because it makes me feel like I'm in a dark homeless shelter.

Definitely a fan :) I visit every once in a while for a drink with some friends.

Food: I'm in love with the Katsu Don. I find myself craving it every now and then. And I love to finish off with the Green Tea Ice Cream! The edamame is average, pretty much like any Japanese restaurant. I have yet to try any sushi, but that's on my list next.

Service: I like the girls that work there. They're all so nice and sweet. I don't think they've ever forgotten an order of mine, or messed one up, either. And I love how it's owned by an actual Japanese person with Japanese employees. Most Japanese restaurants are owned by a Chinese person with Vietnamese employees. And it's nice to see local Japanese people talking with Mr. Genji.

It gets really busy on weekends, and there's been a few close calls when looking for a parking spot. The lot fills up pretty quickly, so hope you're lucky that night. :) I've been on a weekday, and it's not too busy then, so I like to sit an enjoy my company instead of getting completely drunk when it's jam packed and as loud as a concert.

Recommend as a place to bring out of town friends for a drink and some fun!

When I'm home for the holidays, I call my friends and we meet here. It's our "Go-To" spot. Some of us order food, others sing, but we all come to hang out for drinks.

It's legit. The prices are good, the food is tasty, and the service is great. As a karaoke bar, they have some pretty recent songs.

Be careful, however. Don't forget that this warm and cozy establishment is located on Westheimer, and the dutiful HPD is constantly cruising for drunk drivers. Please drink responsibly.

The stars Ive given to Genji is basically for the food. The food is great. Get the beef yakinuki. I love the appetizers that they offer as well. The drinks aren't too shabby and at a good price. This is probably the only reason I'll come to Genji.

Music selection isnt all that great, but their selection isn't that far behind. I do like being able to sit at my own table and sing from where I'm at. You don't have to worry about stage fright. I DON'T, however, like the way they play requests. If one table is requesting 20 songs at a time, you'll have to wait for the 20 songs to play.

The environment isn't all that great. And the bathroom.... so gross. Even though I'll have alcohol in my system, I'll try to hold it for the entire just so I would not have to step in their bathroom.

Whoaa -OH!  Liiiivin' on a Pray-er!

Sit down and throw back a few Genji Special Drink for Ladies before heading up to the main stage to perform in front of a casual crowd of bad singers.  Choose from the Japanese or English songbooks and rest assured that the latest hits will be included, as well as all the classics!

Or snag a private room if one's available (but you can't reserve them in advance - bummer!).   We had to commit to a $100 tab per hour to get in a room, but I see a few people reporting it's only $50/hr now.  At any rate, to reach either goal at their low prices, you better come hungry AND thirsty!  I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

Chicken Karage is perfect karaoke food - think Japanese chicken nuggets.  Kimchi eggrolls and sushi options are okay.  My Japanese friend goes nuts over the "om-rice" - fried rice with ketchup, wrapped into an egg omelet (Apparently this is the ultimate Japanese comfort food).  My favorite dish is a cold noodle salad with veggies (both fresh and pickled) -refreshing and delicious!

Atmosphere is low key and divey, but that sort of adds to the fun of going here.  Except after your third Genji Special Drink for Ladies when you have to go to the Genji Scary Restroom for Ladies.  Don't say I didn't warn you.

Genji is one of my favorite standby's. The food is phenomenal, as are the waitresses who are always an arm length away. The more friends you bring, the more fun you'll have - there are always just enough people to keep it interesting, but never too crowded.

It can get thuggish sometimes, though I've never felt unsafe here.

Just came home from Genji's.  I had alot of fun belting out songs with a room full of people!  At first I was self conscious but did not care after a couple of shots of cold sake.  The song selections are pretty good and the owner running the show knows what table to bring the microphone to.  After a few songs, I got hungry and ordered the Omu Rice, which is a ketchup fried rice with mushroom and pork served inside an egg omlette.  It looks and smells better than my description of it!   TRY IT! :)

I like the concept of singing karaoke and drinking, but add food into the mix?  PERFECT!  The food prices are reasonable and I saw lots of people ordering food so that just says this place has yummy food to hold down your liquor while you sing your heart out.

The place gets packed fast and getting a prime table for the night can be a challenge if you come late.  People sitting in the back have a difficult time seeing the screen as there is alot of traffic flowing in and out and around the place.

Come early and sing and then sit back and eat some yummy food and enjoy the entertainment of people just letting loose and singing all types of songs from country to heavy metal.  You will surely have the time of your life!

Don't laugh at me, I really like this place.  I don't think I've ever had a bad time here.  Perhaps it's the mind-boggling sounds of terrible singing or the ambiance of old guys trying to hit on underaged girls.  Regardless, Genji's brings me back to my college days and being at a Theta/Lambda exchange (haha, yes I was in an Asian sorority!) Oh how I miss those days!

One of the reasons I love this place is because the bartenders are SO NICE.  They're all genuinely nice girls.  Drinks are cheap too, that definitely helps.  It also helps to have a few drinks in you before you start singing (trust me, you'll hear some horrendous singing there).  I've had the food there, it's alright, nothing great but decent rolls and appetizers.

you can tell that there are a bunch of regulars here when you look behind the bar and see all the bottles of iichiko labeled with people's names.  i don't blame them...with good company and a few drinks, Genji's is always a good time! (esp if you want to be reminded of a college Asian party!)

The saving grace of this spot is that the prices are all around cheaper than most places. However, like most cheap karaoke joints, it smells, looks dirty, and even feels dirty when you walk in.

The public room can be fun, but once it gets crowded you would have to wait for your song to play. A private room would be better and it's probably a better deal at $50/hour since you can use food and drinks to your tab. The food is mediocre, so are the mixed drinks.

Song selection is pretty good. Not that many new songs, but you can definitely find something to sing.

    Many different foods.
    Drowning sorrows in a beer.
    Asian cowboys sing.

OK, sorry. Haiku seemed appropriate. Genji's is a really good time. It's best to go with a group (and if you have a big enough group that you think you'll spend $70, get a private room). In the main room, if you get there early, you can warble your heart out. Get there late, though, and chances are a bunch of guys will have the microphone monopoly of doom going. Last time I went, it was hilarious. The drunker they got, the more talented they assumed they were. Better than Ninja Warrior, I'm telling you.

Again, if you've read my reviews, you know I'm not a drinker. (Hey! I'm an Asian chick. I get red faced and sick to my stomach.) But the food more than makes up for it. Japanese dive bar food! I love the stuff. The yakiniku (grilled meat... what an original name) is way excellent. Get a little bowl of rice and call it dinner if you want because they give you the whole darn steak! There's some delicious calimari, excellent pickled Daikon radish, and OMG have you ever had yakisoba? No? You need to.

This is the kind of food they served at Japanese festivals when I was living in Aomori. Dive food. The equivalent of our burgers and fries, only less greasy and with more seafood.

Come on. "I Will Survive" with sake, steak, and a bunch of friends. What's not to like?

    MY FAVORITE place.

I go here solo just to hang and it's basically--
I don't even need a real reason like: someone's birthday to go.
I just go on a whim.

It's kind of like a tapas place.
I usually get the sashimi and hot green tea.
The tea is by the glass but it's like .97 a glass. Not bad.

They have private rooms as well as the main area.

If you get a private room it's $x/hour, but you can use that towards food.
I forget how much it is per hour but for example sake let's say it's $50/hour.
So you use that towards dishes and you just pay what's over if you go over the  $x/hour.
    So instead of paying x/hour+food+drinks+desert:
You pay x/hour +remainder if you go over.

    I like being outside, it's fun. =D

It's the only place that I know that has
Korean, Japanese, Chinese and English song books.

That is basically why I go there. I sing in Korean.
I easily get bored anywhere else if there's no variety.

Weekends get packed and it's a popular place to celebrate birthdays,
as I will very VERY soon. =D

The Nigori is very good. I love nigori: it's the cloudy looking sake.
It's unfiltered so you have to shake it before you serve it.
Very delicious. They serve it here. You should try it.

Cocktails, tea, tapas, singing: best place ever.
Moderately priced and you don't have to dress up. come in chucks if you want.
You can smoke outside. birthday cakes are welcome.
    And the lot is huge.
If it's packed: i park by kinkos, in the next square and walk through the hole in the shrubbery. LOL

I've been on nights where there's a mixed crowd, but yes there's a lot of Asian folks. Not a bad thing. But I do know how some folks feel odd man out when they aren't part of the majority. Don't worry! we're all friendly =D

If you want to sing: go on a Sunday/Monday/Wednesday
If you want to watch other people sing: Thursday-Saturday

Tuesdays get busy from time to time.

If you're there just to get drunk and eat: go whenever. LOL
I like to sing: I aim for slower nights.

It is ok.  It was great when they first opened.  Now it is a young kid hang out joint.  The food, I think is overpriced.  They have after hour sushi here.  Yes it is an ALL Asian crowd!

    It is usually packed.

So recently I spent one wonderful evening under the apparent delusion that I was in serious need of a recording contract.  Sake was mostly to blame, a microphone, a binder full of songs, a table full of equally talented chickadees, make that an entire restaurant of "talented" chickadees, oh right, and of course George Michael AND Andrew Ridgeley.  Bastards!  My table apologizes to all of the other tables that evening.  After my friend commented that she loved Careless Whisper halfway through her rendition of the song and that it also made her tear up a little bit, three of our party were reduced to laughter through the remainder of the song.

The other tables that night were not much better.  I blame sake bombs for convincing the entire room to believe, "Oh, I can sing better than that person."  Viscous cycle!

There are two private rooms for the "high roller" karaoke set.  I understand that if you spend $50+ per hour on libations, you can keep the room.  At one point I noticed a waitress carry a tray with two bottles of Sapporo and an entire bottle of Hennessey into a room.  I find it humorous that a bunch of 20-somethings drank a bottle of Hennessey whilst karaoke-ing.

My advice?  Take a large group of people with you, sit near the teleprompter screen, sing your heart out (or at least laugh at your friends), go easy on the sake bombs, and order the appetizers. They are relatively inexpensive and are pretty tasty.  Oh, and keep in mind that you are sharing a bathroom with an entire restaurant of drunkies who are convinced they should be Britney Spear's opening act.  (Drunk prima donnas don't think bathroom etiquette applies to them.)

Not impressed... at all. If not for all the rounds of sake and "Genji's Special Drink for Ladies" we ordered, I would have been one grumpy sober camper. We had one mission that night: to get drunk off our asses and convince ourselves we were the next American Idols. Now is that so hard for a karaoke bar to help achieve? Didn't think so.

We usually get a private room at these joints, but this place apparently only has 2 rooms which were already booked. So we were seated in the back so the words on the screen were barely visible... boo. Since it was a packed Friday night, it took forever for our turn to come. And when they finally brought mics to our table, they only played 3 of the 6 songs we chose before grabbing the mics from our hands. Plus, the Celine Dion-wannabe chick next to our table who kept intruding in on our songs with her off-tune overpowering voice didn't really help either.

The food was okay, although not nearly as superb as I've heard. Or maybe just b/c I'm not a huge fan of dried, hard squid or super greasy mystery meat. But the night ended well, with only our table and another group remaining til the very end, singing our rendition of "End of the Road"... Boyz II Men would have been proud.

Last night I headed over to Genji for some food, hot sake and karaoke.  I usually head over there early in order to get a private room (Only two in the restaurant).  First come first serve and you must order up to $50 worth of food and/or drinks per hour.  Otherwise they'll charge you $50 bucks an hour, so I say keep on ordering and take the rest home.  They open up only @ 7:00 PM till 2:00.

Yes it is predominantly Asian patrons but all are welcome.  I see all sorts of people dining there.  Genji has a huge updated list of English songs; many of which are current on the radio.  They have also Korean, Chinese and Japanese songs.  The food is good, not great, but then again people come here for the entertainment.  They have a full menu and the prices are fairly inexpensive.  Food is served till 1:30 AM.  SO you can come and dine in late.  I usually order a whole bunch of appetizers and make it a meal of that.  Actually the appetizers are better then the entrees.  I also like the udon soups as well, a great dish especially in this frigid weather.  Also order some hot sake to warm your throat up!  No one here sings well, the sound system is not that great, but who cares?!  Everyone in the restaurant genuinely claps and the owners make you feel right at home.

Yesterday we ordered several bottles of Sake and made Sake bombs with our Sapporo beer.  We had so much fun we didn't realize it was 1:30 AM until "Mama" (The owner) came in and told us last call.  Sure we were dunk and hoarse, but our bellies were still full and we had such a wonderful time!  Recommend to come really early on weekends to get a spot.

C.T. dont know what he is talking about.
English music is always being played in the main room.
    And there are asians
    but also regular non-asians
I have been there 4+ times.
Restroom are not the best but
people do not have sex in there.
It is dark, smoky, and loud because
who wants to sing in the light, smoky because they have a bar, and loud because you are in a karaoke bar!

    Food is great
Fried calamari, beef tongue, and chicken nuggets, my favorites.
    Nigori is what i drink.

    If you buy a bottle
    and dont finish it
they will put your name on it and save it for next time.

Prices are decent 5 for a plate

overall one of my favorite place in Houston to chill.
