Pretty fun for a ladies night out. Â Cover charges ($10!) starts at 7pm, so either get there early before the band starts at 8pm or get a buy 1, get 1 coupon from the visit kc website. Â It's pretty good time with live music you can request from the musicians, who are all talented and you always have fun watching the crowd dance on stage. Â There is typically a really intoxicated guy in a cowboy hat or a gal in way too high heel just having a ball dancing to YMCA or competing for a free drink in a dance-off.
The drinks are pricey, but when you consider you are a getting a live musical act, it's not too bad. Â The huge bucket drinks (~$30) can be dangerous though because they are delicious, go down easily and when shared among a group of friends, really add to the fun environment. Â
There is always at least one birthday or bachelorette party taking place as well. Â It's fun for a change in the ladies' night routine. Â It does get really crowded fairly early in the evening so if you want a table, plan on getting there by 10.
If its basketball season, don't go here unless your are a Kansas fan. Went here and sat at the bar to watch the Kansas game. Â Had a great bar tender. Very friendly! After that game, Kansas State was playing. Â The tv screen above the stage was raised so the dueling pianos could start. Â The band was wearing Kansas shirts and the bar didn't show the next game. Â MANY sports fans were in the establishment and most left to find other venues to partake of food, beverages and basketball. Will never go back!
Review Source:I've been here twice, and been to the HATM in Baltimore twice, so I have a limited source for comparison. Â While this is a national chain, you don't necessarily get the same thing in all locations. Â Having been to both locations, I will say that the Baltimore spot has this one beat by a mile. Â I guess if you've never been to another one, you wouldn't know how mediocre it was, so for the locals I'm sure this place is great. Â I, however, was disappointed in the quality of the show. Â I realize that it's a piano bar, but a big part of the fun is that the musicians interact with the audience, upping the comedy ante, so to speak. Â In the really good shows, they work the crowd, stirring up participation with the song requests and performances, the wall-writing, and even letting audience members come on stage to play in instrument or sing. Â This place really didn't do any of that. Â Don't get me wrong, they had SOME interaction with the crowd, but mostly it was to complain about the song requests being made (which in all fairness, many of them were pretty lame). Â Â The musicians were talented, but not rock star quality. Â
They don't have food, but they do provide a menu for Johnny's downstairs, where you can call and they'll deliver it to your table. Â The drink prices are pretty steep, which I suppose is to be expected here. Â I do really wish they'd just post their prices on their menu, as there is a HUGE difference in the prices of their various buckets. Â And really, how much can they vary from one week to the next? Â Just post your prices already!
I was surprised to have liked this P&L venue as much as I did. Went in lieu of going to Kill Devil Club (see that review). I used my smart phone to pull up their mobile website where they had a coupon for 2 free admissions. That's a deal with a $10 cover. They had plenty of drink specials, but seating was hard to come by. When a table opened up, I pounced. The table service was very good, very attentive. The show was fantastic. By that, I mean the musicianship was amazing. Almost all the performers rotated from instrument to instrument and they took turns on the vocals. That's some talent! On the downside, enticing drunken bachelorette parties onto the stage to make fools of themselves... well, seen it, over it, why bother?
Review Source:Went there with some friends last night and have to say that I was not impressed by any means. Â I've been in several piano bars and this one relies more on their flair than their talent. Â Their sound system isn't the best, they rely on sound machines and other instruments to mask their poor piano skills. Â If your into drinking and watching people dance around drunk this is your place for sure. Â If your into talented piano playing and hearing music that entertains you....stay away.
Review Source:I love piano bars. I'm not so fond of this place. It's overpriced. Beyond overpriced for the Mid-West. $12-$15 a drink. I'm not in Miami. Service was decent. At times I thought the piano players were auctioning themselves more than playing the piano. After a $100 on a few drinks we left this place to find a better fit for us.
Review Source:I like piano bars...but I'm more in to non-dueling piano bars. You know, the ones where you get a good drink, listen to some great music and just enjoy the night. That being said, I know this is not what Howl At The Moon does for a living, so I adjust my expectations accordingly. And even then, I do like dueling piano bars to an extent.
Here's my thought on this place, and hang with me here...the alcohol ruins it. Seriously, I've had the best times here as the designated driver...just listening to the music, singing along, trying to remember the words. This is the kinda place I'd love to just hang out in without it being a bar.
The musicians are a mix...some are talented, some are awful. I saw one lady recently who got shifted over to play the bass (ahem...the MOST important instrument in any band), and she clearly was faking it - her fingers were playing chords on all strings, but she was only plucking the top two. Some of them seem to have some real talent though, and those guys/gals make the place fun.
Service, like every else at P&L, is usually awful, with expensive and weak drinks. However, on my most recent experience, our server was awesome - he was on top of his game and friendly as heck. Drinks were still terribly weak though. But, that's why I hate Power & Light...I'll come to P&L 1-2 times a year, and that's more than enough.
I added an extra star purely due to the talent of the musicians that work here. Â They were all extremely talented and played a great mix of music. Â I was there with 7 other work colleagues and we all had a super fun time. Â I would take a star away on the fact that I found the service spotty and the drinks WAY too expensive. Â I would definitely go back just to see the people here play again though... maybe with a little more money in my pocket for tips for them and a little less money for the drinks.
Review Source:This bar is so much fun. Â This chain is all over the country, and this one is great. I am always amazed at the level of skill the musicians have. They literally play anything!
During the week they have some great drink specials and the service is great. Â I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys music. Its great with a large group of friends, even during the week they have a good crowd.
I was able to request things from Kanye West to Toto, they literally play it all!
How can you not just luv this place. Tons of fun, great for bdays, celebrations, girls night, etc. Â I was there a month ago for the American Cancer Society's bachelor auction. Service has been just average...but for this event, this venue went above and beyond. Nice job. In addition, server Stephen....awesome! Â Good job Howl
Review Source:The good: Â The musicians are quite talented & play a wide variety. Â Sometimes it's country, sometimes it's oldies, sometimes it's corny stuff... whatever people are requesting that night, I guess.
The bad: Â Service, sadly, can be hit-or-miss. Â The happy hour buffet always seems to be out of almost everything, so you end up scrounging for a few broken chips at the bottom of a bowl of crumbs, and the drinks are pretty pricey. Â Last time I was there, they lost my pre-paid reservation (table for a birthday celebration) and left us hanging at the door for quite a while. Â Then they finally seated us, but left us hanging without drinks for so long that I finally hunted up the manager & asked him to send someone to our table. Â That's just wrong, and left a very bad taste in my mouth, especially since I was trying to give my friend a nice birthday celebration. Â They got her stage call wrong too! Â (bachelorette instead of birthday -- whatev, by that point it seemed like everything was going to go wrong so we just went with it.)
SO -- Don't go for the top-notch service, go for the music.
one of my fondest memories of living in Las Vegas was going to the piano bar in NYNY. I always had fun there, even if it kind of was (and is probably even more so now) a tourist trap. and I'm also a bit of a music snob and still loved it!
last Friday, my husband and I had dinner in the Power & Light. it was our first time really exploring the area. the band playing in the courtyard area wasn't very good, so I suggested heading up to Howl at the Moon. it helped that I remembered the free cover (which is $8) coupon I had in the car.
we found a great spot to sit and our server was patient if not helpful (I wanted to try the pink lemonade vodka, but not in the specialty drink - this was confusing to her). the musicians here were talented but the music they were playing was just horrible. it all just seemed super cheesy (country, pop) and not fun. I actually felt bad for the musicians.
at one point though, someone requested a song to honor the military and the piano player had everyone who served come up on the stage. that was very moving and earned the place an extra star.
it was entertaining to people watch there, but not enough to ever persuade me to return.
I LOVE Howl at the Moon!
This is the third Howl at the Moon location I've been to with the others being in Chicago and Houston. Â While the KC location is not as large, it's every bit as fun. Â Out of the other piano bars I've been to such as Pete's Dueling Piano Bar in Houston, Ernie Biggs in Westport KC, and Sweet Caroline's Dueling Piano Bar in NYC, Howl at the Moon is still my favorite.
My first visit here was with co-workers during a convention several years ago. Â We had a blast singing at the top of our lungs and dancing along to the songs. Â I will never look at Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" the same way again after that night though my co-workers would swear they don't remember anything. Â Anyways I digress.
The musicians here are incredibly talented as they rotate from drums, piano, guitar, to vocals! Â I can't even imagine how much they practice and learn new songs outside of the shows as they take song requests from the audience. Â You'll hear anything from Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," Billy Joel's "Piano Man," "Low" by Flo Rida, to "Baby" by Justin Bieber. Â The latter surprisingly brought the house down. Â That's the fun of piano bars. Â You never really know what to expect! Â I could barely play the guitar when I practiced with sheet music and tabs let alone doing it without any assistance. Â Mad props to the musicians here.
Most recently, I won a 100 person happy hour for Howl at the Moon that includes 2 drink tickets for $1 each and an appetizer buffet. Â I had the choice of a night time show with discounted drinks or the regular 5-8 PM happy hour time with better specials. Â I chose the latter and was glad as we got to sit directly in front of the stage.
Justine Brown, the promotions manager, was really cool and hooked me up with a free martini outside of the typical wells and domestic beers as I was celebrating my birthday. Â She had helped me schedule the happy hour, was extremely prompt in answering her e-mails, and stopped by my table a few times to see if I was having a good time and needed anything.
Late nights and weekends can get especially rowdy here. Â Be prepared to get called on stage and have some fun!
I came here for the happy hour party because my fellow Yelper, Lilian O., was celebrating her birthday; in addition, she won the happy hour party for 100 people.  We came at like 5:15pm or something and it was empty.  I wasn't surprised since it just opened at 5pm. lol  We had two tickets each and that allowed us to buy drinks for $1; however, it was limited to domestic beers, select wines, long islands, captain morgan, and margaritas.  After those two drinks, then the price went up to the regular price.
Our waitress was really nice and regularly asked us if we needed anything. Â There was also an appetizer buffet which contained hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, tacos, nachos, and cookies. Â The food was okay but it was good enough for me. Â We stayed there for a few hours listening to the band on stage take song requests (with tip). Â They didn't play our song request which was Rebecca Black's Friday song. Â I know what you're thinking but we wanted to see if they would play it. Â They never played it. Â However, they did play Justin Bieber's Baby song. Â LOL! Â It was interesting to hear it on piano and I could tell everybody was having a great time with that song. Â They played almost everything from Journey to Lady GaGa.
The crowd was mixed but I noticed a lot of older people there. Â It was a fun environment and some great musicians performing on stage. Â Fun!
Love Howl! Â We were there a few Friday's ago and got there around 9:15...stayed until 1:30 if that means anything! Â Yes, it's a typical piano bar, but this was the first time I had ever seen a drummer and guitar player with the piano players. Â It was a nice addition. Â
The talent on stage is amazing. Â Every person plays each instrument (and well) and it's non-stop entertainment. Â Yeah, some of the songs are cheesy, but so what? Â We heard everything from Journey and Styx to Eminem and Lady Gaga...and everything in between. Â The blond gal in particular was AMAZING.
Drinks were standard fare for the area...$4 for domestics if I recall. Â We got a seat near the back bar and service was quick and efficient...especially for the crowd that was there (very busy). Â I realize opinions differ, but we love this place and we will be going back again next weekend to celebrate a friends 40th bday.
I just got back from KC after spending four lovely days there for the Big XII basketball tourney. The first night we went out, our one and only stop was Howl at the Moon.
I don't think there's anything unique about the concept, but the atmosphere here is so much fun! There were definitely a ton of out-of-towners (our 15-person group included) which helped make the night that much better. We had an awesome time trading insults with our rival school, coming up with witty sayings for the mirror board, and requesting ridiculous songs.
The piano players are ridiculously talented and in the 3 hours we were at the bar there were only TWO songs they didn't know.
Drinks were pricey, but that was expected. Also weird: prices aren't listed on their menus. The waitresses seemed to be annoyed when we asked questions. Whatever - I'm sure she thought 20 CU fans were annoying.
Overall, a great time and I will definitely be back the next time I'm in KC.
Wow, I can't believe I haven't written a review for Howl at the Moon yet. Â My buddies and I try to make it to KC when cabin fever sets in. Â We usually get a hotel down the street from the Power and Light district so we are within walking (staggering) distance.
Every time we visit the P&L we have to hit  Howl up.  The players there are phenominal.  While there are a few classic songs, I am impressed with the breadth of the players and their ability to play so many songs as per request.  Their interaction with the crowd is excellent and it seems to be fairly consistent each time we've been there. Â
The bar does do some gimmicks to get people in, for example the first time we stayed we got free entry and a free drink, so it pays to check with your hotel if there are any promotions.
Piano Bar? Â NO. Â Douchebag City? Â YES.
The dick overly buff and tan bartender must have thought I was drunk and stupid as he tried to short change me. Â Trust me, it was not an accident. Â Sadly, after watching the crowd for a few minutes, I concluded that this novice swindler was probably fairly successful at this game. Â
Having NO other options at the time for a sip within walking distance of my hotel (tried to go to Zoo Bar but it was closed) I had my 2-for-Tuesday drinks and got the hell out of there. Â Why did my first and second whiskey and cokes taste so differently? Â I do not know why, and I do not wish to ponder the possibilities.
I do not drink, so I usually find nightclubs and bars boring. Â However, I enjoy going to Howl at the Moon with family and friends. Â It is not too crowded and the music is loud, but not too loud.
The staff does well at getting the crowd to participate. Â I will be returning.
They do not serve food, but food can be brought in.
Not a piano bar fan, but I have to say the staff were friendly, outgoing, and on top of their game. Â The entertainment...corny. Â The most I enjoyed was the college fight songs competition. Â I took my out of town family there as it was their first visit to Power & Light District, along with my daughter, her bf, and a buddy of mine. Â My second time there. Â Oh, and we used coupons for half off cover charge. Â We managed a good few hours there for a Friday night:) Â Made some memories. Â That's all that counts.
Review Source:Lead me to a dueling piano bar with reasonably-priced drinks and I'll follow you like a stray dog. This intimate, upscale club is right in the middle of the very happening P&L District and despite a plethora of drunk bastards running amok everywhere, it's pretty hard not to have a great time.
Review Source:We were invited to a "party" here that a friend had won on the howl at  the moon website.  And guess what....about 20 other people had also won a party here too...so needless to say the place was jam packed and it was only happy hour when we arrived.  The $1 drinks we got were good (two of them), then the $3 drinks after that were good, but it only lasted for 2 hours.  You were lucky to find a spot at the bar to order them.  Also, a free appetizer buffet was included in the party win.  I never actually saw the buffet, but I saw people walking with plates from the buffet that consisted of fruit and veges.  The whole party thing just leaves a nasty taste in my mouth because it's obviously a racket to get people in the door.
All the songs played were pretty dated. Â I probably will not be going back anytime soon. Â And like another person posted about, I also thought that if a fire broke out, I'd be a definite goner, because there were so many people jammed into the small space.
I love piano bars, so when I went to visit Howl at the Moon, I was already feeling inclined to like it. Drunk people singing along to a piano? Count me in. The first time I went, my friend and I went on a random weekday during the summer, so it wasn't that busy but there was still an entertaining group of drunk bikers that knew the words to every song and tried to get us to chime in. It was pretty fun and relaxing, even though I've heard better piano players. The second time we went, it was on a Saturday night and we had to wait in line for about 20 minutes to get in. They had a female drummer who was visiting performing with the piano players, which was fun to watch.
But overall, this experience was not as fun. Once we paid our $7 cover (you are seeing live entertainment, after all), we tried to get through the crowds of people to get a drink. The bartenders got to us pretty quickly, considering how busy it was. If you are with a big group of people, you should definitely get the fishbowl drink--it's a large fruity drink with a lot different alcohols in it and it has multiple straws so everyone can share. It really packs a punch.
But, I'm going to go ahead and say it was a definite fire hazard in there, because the place was so packed that it seriously took us about 15 minutes to walk 100 feet to the bathrooms at the back of the bar. No one was moving, everyone was just standing because there were no seats and no where else to go. There were no walkways to get through and you had to basically battleram your way through people just to get past. They need to be more strict about making sure people are leaving before letting more in...it was just too packed in there for us to even enjoy ourselves. I would go to Howl at the Moon again, but only if it wasn't as packed...maybe on a Thursday or other week night.
Let me just start this by saying i am not a piano bar fan. Â OK, there was that time in New Orleans, but I was loaded on Hurricanes and basking in an exhibitionist glow. Â Anyhoo, I checked this place out because I am a big fan of the revitalization of downtown and the Power & Light District will play a big part in bringing things back to life. Â I plan on checking out everything that opens there at least one time...THEN make fun of it. Â I think there will be a lot of touristy attractions, but even tourists deserve a real review.
Compared to the piano bar in New Orleans the entertainment here was pretty flat. Â They actually flew these guys in???? Â I am pretty sure they may have done the opening acts at a few locally comedy clubs...really lame. Â I was embarrassed for them. Â
The crowd that hangs out at a piano bar does not need to be highlighted under anything brighter then a 20-watt bulb. Â Turn those lights down!!!!!! Â Then again, you might miss the sneak attack from the acid wash jeans guy sporting the Chiefs sweatshirt. Â
Now I know why I travel so much.
