There's nothing like delicious eats and live music.

My favorite brunch in Boston... hands down. It's always crowded so be sure to get there early.

I've had a few of their items including the french toast, omelettes, and more. I've never been disappointed. Their oatmeal is creamy, eggs are fresh, drinks are delicious, and the ambiance just rocks. A perfect Sunday morning brunch!

Beatrice's Novel below is 100% fact.  easy location to get too and free parking wasn't an issue on Sunday morning.  I too had the long haired gem named tony as my server and he was excellent and very funny.
The food explodes with flavor in your mouth and the servings are mountainous.  I've never left there without feeling full and 100% satisfied.

This place is a must go for brunch if you've never been

My review is based on brunch alone... Do you know how hard it is to find a place that serves Mimosas and French Toast on a Saturday without having to go into Boston or wait in some rediculous line?!?!?!? Well, it is!
I found Johnny D's by YELP searching Brunch Mimosas and I am so glad that I did.
We were seated right away and the staff was nice without being too pushy. The place is pretty cool and there was some light live backround music being played.
Now, not only do they have mimosas but they come in either good sized cups or a giant parrott head! Also, they not only come in the standard orange and champagne style, they have numerous different kinds! I went with Strawberry if you were wondering.
I ordered the basic french toast, it is and will always be my go-to breakfast when eating out. You can really tell how good a place is by the french toast and here it was good. My friend was a bit more adventurous and ordered some amazing pecan encrusted caramel french toast awesomeness. This is good if you want dessert for breakfast. It was really fantastic.
The fresh fruit bowl was really good too and came with more than your typical melons.
I just want to say thanks for Johnny D's for an amazing Saturday Mimosa French Toast Brunch.
    I'll be back.

My friend was looking for a reputable place that 1) served brunch on SAT 2) had mimosas.  So, as any good researcher, she turned to YELP* for ideas.  Well, all of YELP*'s fingers pointed in the direction of this "hip" little hole in the wall down in Davis Sq. Somerville.

Let's start with the basics, we drove in but it is directly across from the Davis Sq. "T" stop if you commute.  There is on street (metered) parking all around and we had no trouble finding an open spot on Saturday at 10:30am.  So make sure to bring some quarters if you decide to drive in.

Very easy to find, adjacent to the Boston Burger Company and J.P. Licks.

When you walk in, you walk into the bar area which, is very dim.  Then on your left there is a huge open area where the seating is as well as a stage which was occupied by an older man strumming a guitar very softly.  It was not distracting or annoying and he was playing popular songs which I found pleasant.  I can see how it transitions into a night spot.

I noticed as we were walking through to be seated that nearly every persons plate had the homefries (potatoes) present.  Although I didn't try them (as much as I wanted to) they appear to be a hit.

I can't remember our waiters name but, he was youngish with a pony tail and was very attentive and nice.  Once we placed our drink order we took a while before we made our food order and our waiter gave us plenty of space until we were ready.

As I stated in my intro.. one of our "must haves" was to find a place that served mimosa's.  Well, they not only have the traditional mimosa but.. they offer a variety of mimosas!  I went with the strawberry mimosa.  Now... you have 2 options for the cup size, regular and parrot glass.  So, having had traditional mimosas before, I went with regular.  WELL... Johnny D's "regular" mimosa comes in a 16 ounce GLASS!  For $7 and some change, this is the best deal around.... and DELICIOUS, they also do NOT shy on the champagne ratio!

When I eat breakfast or brunch, my "go to" is pancakes 90% of the time but, since I am trying to be "better" about my eating I have been going for some egg's and turkey bacon.  Well.... the menu selection at this place QUICKLY had my mind and my mouth salivating and I was so indecisive regardless of how "sure" I was with what I would be ordering prior to getting there!

Back to the menu..... I found my eyes had somehow acquired a laser beam super power which immediately focused on the Pecan-Carmel French Toast.  Naturally I ordered that... I wish I could say I was lying when I say 5 minutes YES 5 MINUTES after placing our food order: 1 order of reg french toast, a fruit cup, 1 order of Pecan-Carmel French Toast and a side of bacon.... we HAD OUR MEAL!   Our meal was served quickly, it was cooked to PERFECTION, and WARM.  My guess is they make french toast like it's going out of style to keep it cranking out like that.  The Pecan-Carmel french toast tasted like a warm heath bar... they give you 3 GENEROUS slices of chunky Challah bread.. sadly I could only eat one but.. it was worth it to sacrifice the eggs for this dish!!!  It was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten.  But... if you DONT do SWEET... stay away!

I think this is a great place to go with friends for a Saturday brunch.. our whole meal including mimosas was less than $45 and for the city, given the portions of the food and drink, it would make be not only recommend it but, make a trip back someday soon!

got the braised pork tacos. juicy pork with egg and soft tortillas stuffed into two great tacos with a side of homefries. meat was not overly seasoned so the flavor of the pork meat was still there and well complimented. was also cooked to the right point of being soft and not stringy. portions were great as i was well satisfied after having just run 5k.

was halfway through eating when a musician went on stage and started playing some jazzy music on the pixiphone. pretty good environment.

The food is consistently good.  We come here a few times a year, usually for brunch by bike as the trail brings you practically right to the front door.  Good size portions and a very satisfying meal.

Got an email from the the manager asking about my incident. I really appreciate that gesture, so maybe it's just one single person who is rude.

Regardless. I like Johnny Ds usually good music and an attentive bar. Sometimes the shows can be a bit more pricey than I'd like, but that's ok. The food can be hit or miss, but really its a really solid venue to see good shows.

3 stars for food 4 stars for music.

We paid a first visit here a couple of weeks ago when we were searching for a good place to go for a rare night of dancing. A band named "Booty Vortex" was playing a range of covers from funk, disco, pop, soul and R&B (did I miss any?). I liked the way the club is arranged and the blend of people at this show. No doubt, different bands draw unique audiences but I would guess the crowds tend to be convivial and mellow. I was touched by nostalgia as the dance floor and stage brought back memories of a similar set-up at a club in Central Sq. (called, "Ruby's?) and a  magical night of dancing to Jr Walker and the All-Stars in the mid-'70's. I really need to get out more often.

I've gone here many times. I will say that breakfast places are hard to come by in Boston, especially good ones. This place is a brunch/breakfast place. Don't go here for dinner because it's not their forte. For brunch there is live music and a full on brunch drinks specials. Their bloody marys are good if you like those. I've had most of the options on their savory menu. They also have trivia Monday nights and do live music on most nights.

We went to Johnny D's to see Booty Vortex.  If i had just come for the show, it would have received 4 stars (the dance floor isn't big enough for the crowd which would be the only reason it lost a star).  But we ate too and this is where the rating comes from.

Because I don't like to stand all night, I reserved a table which required a $12 per person food purchase.  I called in advance to find out how late we could come and still get dinner since the show didn't start until 10pm.  I was told that the latest I could arrive was 9:15pm for my 10pm show to meet my meal purchase requirement.  We arrived at 9pm and sat around waiting for the previous show's diners to depart.  We weren't even seated until 9:30pm and we weren't served until just before the show.  This was VERY frustrating since I had cancelled another thing we had wanted to do that evening to meet Johnny D's timetable for food.

While we were waiting, we were checking out the menu at the bar.  There were some items that looked particularly tasty and we were looking forward to a good meal.  But when we were seated, we were informed that the regular menu wasn't available for the show (something that was NOT obvious on the website).  Out of the items on the restricted menu, there was very little that looked appetizing and gluten-free (I'm allergic to gluten), so we went with burgers (mine without a bun).

The burgers we ordered arrived on a white plate with no garnish.  It looked like it had come out of a bad diner and it tasted that way too.  It was obvious that someone had taken great care to pick a high quality meat for the burger only to have it ruined by the cook who clearly pressed it down the entire time it was cooking thereby squeezing out all the juices from it so that my burger (ordered and delivered medium) tasted like a dried-out, well-done hockey puck.  Both the burger and fries had no seasoning and were bland and boring.

My boyfriend ordered a salad with his burger.  The salad was tasty - in fact tastier than anything else we had ordered, but it was TINY.  It was gone in about 4-5 bites which worked out to about $1 per bite.  Insanely expensive for what was made of not very pricey ingredients.

The waitress was clearly overwhelmed and it took her forever to get back to us.  By the time she did and I had a chance to complain that my bacon cheeseburger had arrived without bacon, I was half way through the burger.  To her credit, she returned with about 6 slices of bacon which was the tastiest part of my meal.  She continued to be harried for the hour and a half we were there.  We got one drink refill and by the time we left, the bill topped out at $57 for two people with only two alcoholic drinks purchased and no appetizer or dessert - not including the tickets for the show.

The show was awesome, the food was abysmal, the service was mediocre.  Meh.  For $57, we could have had a great meal at any of a dozen different restaurants within a short walk of the show.  Was having the seat worth it?  Maybe.  It was a mob scene and I hate crowds, so having seats in the raised section was a welcome respite from the crowd.  Although I think next time, I'll order the food and leave it on the table.

Finally went to jazz brunch at Johnny D's on Sunday morning. The atmosphere was en pointe, but the food was really only so-so. I had the mixed veg scramble special, home fries, and rooibos tea.  Maybe I'll try it again sometime and order something different, since people seem to rave about their eats.

I'd like to just add that I emailed the management the day after we were there. I really thought they should be made aware of the lax manner of our waitress, as I previously stated I will not go back and ONLY because of the service.
I have not as of yet received anything back.  Being in management at one time myself , this is something that should be addressed immediately with at the very least an apology.
Their lack of communications has shown me that they apparently don't care that much about their clientele and figure they can get on with what they have now.
Reputations CAN be tarnished though no matter what :-)

Apparently this place has other things going on when I'm not there, but the few occasions that I have darkened their doorstep they were basically empty and quick on the draw with a Narragansett.

It's pretty divey but with some not-entirely-bad snacks available. Beer costs what beer costs. Atmosphere approaches zero in terms of me remembering anything about the interior.

But I do remember that they were willing to serve me two beers at once when I was having a crisis of sobriety. And that on a recent sunday they were playing a pretty sweet 90s pop playlist that afforded a slapdash yet delightful Backstreet Boys singalong.

So. 4 stars sounds good to me. If the actual Backstreet Boys show up I might bump it up to 5. I dare you to make this happen, Mr. D!

One of the best live music venues in the Boston area.  Sound system is great, as is the sound people, they book some awesome shows - and the food is good for a bar / music venue.    They are working hard to keep it that way. Nice people  you should frequent them.

Here's how I see it. This place is 4-5 stars for awesome local music, atmosphere. I think it's awesome to have a place  like this. It's unlike anywhere I've ever been.
BUT. you knew it was coming... the food is TERRIBLE. We came before a show at the Somerville theater hoping to have dinner and drinks somewhere different and cool. Different and cool? check. Drinks? check. Food? UGH. The menu was very very limited. We went on a Sunday at 5:00. There wasn't much to choose from. We got chicken fingers and calamari for an appetizer. There were 3 tiny chicken fingers. . The calamari I can't even explain. There were like jalapeno pepper baked into them. I love spicy food. I brought my spicy food loving friends. We could not eat it! They were terrible. For dinner we got burgers, sandwiches. They were not very good. We left hungry.
By far the worst part was the service. They were obviously understaffed but there were 5 of us who wanted to eat and order many drinks and he probably made it to our table 3 times over about 3 hours. We had to keep walking up to the bar to get beers.
So to paraphrase. Do you want to go somewhere really cool and listen to local live jazz music while getting drinks from the bar? Then awesome head over to Johhny D's!.
Do you want to eat something edible? Then stay far far away and go somewhere else... then head over to Johnny D's to listen to really cool local live jazz music and get drinks at the bar.

I believe someone helped themselves to an 8 dollar tip on my behalf.  Bravo.  I will never come to your restaurant again.  Guy who answered the phone yesterday gave me the managers name and said he was working today.  Today he said he was not working and "ive been told wrong" even though HE was the one who lied to me yesterday, then gave me attitude and hung up on me.
ps. my total was under 14 dollars, so as i see it, i was charged as if i had spent 40 dollars.

Unless you want to spend time on the phone with your credit card company disputing charges, use your card with caution!

Went here for the "free" blues jam which is on Sundays at 4-7.  The staff was great.  High marks for them.  Can't comment on the food as we only had Polenta fries which were quite good.  Very casual place to see/hear great blues music.  Other nights I think it is paid but w hat the heck....it's the blues.

Seeing music here is okay....not the best venue as its a restaurant too so you dont have much dance room...The security who work here need to be nicer to customers...I mean sorry I'm not downing your expensive drinks till I fall over fifteen minutes prior to driving home. I'm just here for music I have PAID you & I am an adult I don't need your holier than thou attitude. Okay so you were bullied in high school...please don't take it out on me. Last I checked Hitler wasn't your supervisor....thanks

Johnny' D's is a pretty decent place to grab a drink, play some trivia, and enjoy a cheap hot dog for just $1.

I've been here for several different occasions, but mostly for Monday night trivia. There is always a relatively packed house, and the events are always well run. Despite the large-ish crowds servers manage to keep up with drink refills and payments without too much of a delay.

The one think I'll warn folks about here is the mixed drinks. I know it is really tempting to order a beverage with a name like "Honey Badger", but you're really better off just ordering a beer or simple rum & coke here. The mixed drink menu, while creative, is not the most delicious.

I don't know how I've lived in Somerville for 4.5 years and not yet written this review. I love Johnny D's. Breakfast/brunch is by far the best tasting and the best value in Somerville/Cambridge. You can get a combo brunch meal with eggs/omelette and french toast/pancakes with oatmeal, home fries and coffee for about $10. Sometimes there's a wait for Saturday/Sunday jazz brunch, but if you time it right, you're ok (usually before 11am there's only a 10 minute wait for small parties). They have great mimosas and bloody mary's too! I have been here back to back weekend mornings because it's just that good.

Seeing music here is great too. There's a dance floor, tables along the sides of the stage and the bar in the back for options to hear/watch musicians. There's a $10-15 cover for weekend acts usually.

Came here on a night where there was some kind of Grateful Dead cover band. The crowd definitely looked like it anyway. There was this one guy I swear must've been on acid. He spun around in circles for about 30 minutes.

But I digress... The bar staff was friendly and quickly remembered my drink order. Drama free crowd and chill atmosphere. Small cover for the live music seemed fair.

Johnny D's is a fun spot for brunch. I can't speak for the other hours because I've never been there outside of the hours of pancakes, waffles, and omelettes. So I will just speak to the brunch crowd.

What I love about Johnny D's brunch menu is the rotating specials. There is always something new that catches my eye, especially their waffle/pancake specials. There's the pear compote... ooh... the strawberry ricotta... ahh... and the chocolately specials... drool.

The savory dishes are good too! But they're not as special to write about.

Also, with most dishes, you can choose a cup of oatmeal or a cup of grits (can order with cheese or with brown sugar or just plain butter). The oatmeal is very chunky with gigantic raisins - so beware. You must like those things to enjoy this oatmeal!

And coming during brunch means having live jazz with your meal. Nothing wrong about that! So, come on down to Johnny's, but don't cut me in line... cause their is almost always a line.

I am fond of the dinner food a Johnny Ds. I wouldn't expect fresh salads spicy turkey burgers, and high-quality meats at a place known for roots music and beers. But, the food is high quality and the opposite of boring. My husband loves the rosemary chicken. I haven't had anything there that wasn't fresh and a bit more than typical American food.
Yes, I go to Johnny Ds for music. They have some great acts and it is a perfect size to really hear it. Next time you are going to a show, don't skip having dinner there, it is surprisingly good.

Your opinions about Johnny D's are irrelevant.
They serve mimosas in a delightful parrot mug.

The food is just fine. It's your standard brunch... except the mimosas are served in mugs that look like parrots.

The music is nice. It's never too loud. It's never too soft. It's fun to listen to as you drink OUT OF A PARROT.

The wait to get a table is never that bad. It always looks worse than it is. But, good news... if you have to wait, just saunter over to the bar and get a drink IN A CERAMIC PARROT MUG!

Oh, and there's free Wifi... so you can instagram your parrot mug to your hear'ts content.

I love taking people to Jazz brunch here. The atmosphere is super relaxed and casual; plus, who doesn't like listening to some stand up bass while they enjoy a stack of pancakes or some eggs?

Their scrambles are my brunch of choice: either with eggs or tofu, depending on how I'm feeling. All variations that I've enjoyed have been decidedly yummy. That being said, the real star of the show has got to be their oatmeal. I have no idea what they do to that magical stuff, but they must slow cook it with the raisins in there the whole time because by the time they serve it, those things have been rehydrated to the size of grapes. No matter what you do: get this oatmeal. Unless, of course, you don't like oatmeal, in which case I say: go somewhere else for brunch so that I don't have to wait any longer for a table. But seriously, if you have people visiting or you just want to have some awesome breakfasty food on a weekend or you had a rough Saturday night, consider some brunch at Johnny D's.

As an additional note, unrelated to brunch: I've also been here on a Thursday night. There was no live music that night and it was pretty empty, but they have some nice beers on tap and it was very low key, though I'm sure it's far more lively on a night when a band is playing.

What do you get when you cross a diner with a pub?  The inside of Johnny D's.  Add live jazz music (and oatmeal to everything), sit back, and enjoy.

This was my first visit to Johnny D's (and due to geography, almost certainly my last).  I ordered mint chocolate chip pancakes (aka Special Pancakes), which came with mint flavored butter.  It was as delicious as I hoped, but I could barely make a dent in it.

Everything else is standard diner fare, so it's no surprise that this venue is receiving ordinary diner-type reviews.  But something tells me that just as this property seems to have a few tricks up its sleeve, they're likely to offer something intriguing and new every time you visit.

I was in town looking for a room for rent, wandering the city from T stop to T stop, walking miles upon miles in the insane summer heat - when I stumbled upon the awesomeness that is Johnny D's.

It was early evening and I was pooped, but had one more apartment to see. I hopped off the Red Line at Davis Square and started a beeline towards my appointment. I had had a very long day, and I reeeaaally had to pee, so I ducked into the first place I came across. The guy at the door called me back and pointed at the sign that read $10 COVER. "Oooooh, there's a cover?" I asked...? "I was just looking for the restroom." I expected to be kicked out, but instead the bouncer pointed me in the right direction and gave me a cute smile.

Later, after I finished my appointment, I decided to stop back by Johnny D's for dinner. The $10 cover included a spaghetti dinner, so I got to see a great show and eat a good meal for a decent price. The beer was cold and the waiter was just  as friendly as the guy at the door.

I totally recommend Johnny D's, and if I end up in the area I will most certainly be back.

Food is OK but that's not why you go here.

Cocktails are OK but that's not why you go here.

Grab a beer and dance, tap, shake, nod your ass off to the live music EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.

    Sunday brunch is also great.

A staple in my life.  Not my go-to bar but also I really couldn't live without it.

    The rating:
This review is for their Sunday jazz brunch only, with maybe an extra tidbit thrown in.  But the brunch is where it's at, and in for that I am giving it five stars.

Why I chose to eat here:
Um...it's called Johnny D's.  In case you missed my name, take a second and come back, I'll be waiting...back? Ok great, on to the review.

Oh, but before that, quick little story, I took Ms. Sarah-pants here for a breakfast early in our relationship and had her thinking it was my restaurant.  I was a nice guy and didn't keep up the ruse for long.  So yeah, the review...

    The food:
I have been here umpteen times and the food is always good to great, with large portions that will leave your belly full, and your taste buds happy.

I have tried so many items yelps review text limit would almost certainly be maxed out if I were to try to give you a review of them all, so I'll just give you a few of my favorites.

First the oatmeal, this comes free with many of the brunch options but that just adds to its charm.  This is my favorite oatmeal ever.  Better than my moms even, and I don't even mind if she reads this (she puts salt on her oatmeal and though she never subjected me to such cruelty it just goes to show she doesn't know oatmeal).  It is very thick, never soupy with plump juicy raisins running throughout.  On the side they bring brown sugar, and I usually ask for milk to splash on top, I highly recommend you do the same.

My other favorite item was a happy little accident.  I had ordered the special, but unfortunately they had just run out...my fault for taking 20 minutes to decide that I definitely absolutely unquestioningly wanted the special even though it caught my eye the moment I saw it on the menu.  Either way, by some sort of Devine intervention they were out and I needed to choose something else, what did I choose, why the blintzes and eggs combo of course.  The blitzes were so good, so very good.  I don't eat a lot of blintzes but I know yummy when I taste it and these were off the charts yummy.  The cheese filling played so well with the sweet strawberry topping and the sour cream with just enough dough to hold it all nicely on my fork and add a bit of texture to the flavor party.  These were some good blintzes.

But what of the eggs? Always cooked exactly as ordered and done well.  In fact the quality of the cooking is never in question at Johnny D's.  It's always done right, in fact I've never even had a piece of burnt toast.  When you frequent a place you get a real feel for its consistency and I have never had a bad meal, not has anyone I have ever brought along for the ride.  Seriously folks, everything is good here, order anything, I am sure you won't be disappointed.

So that little tidbit I wanted to tell you, if you are ever there for lunch or dinner, get the burger, Sarah did and I was jealous, I had a bite and it was one of the most beeftastic burgers I've had.  Simply dressed with bacon, lettuce, tomato and a spot of ketchup, this was one great burger, it tasted like you dream beef should taste.

    The service:
For Sunday brunch you should be prepared to deal with Davis square parking which can get frustrating, and also prepare to wait a bit, but patience is rewarded.  Servers are always friendly and efficient and cleanliness was never a problem for me.  It is a jazz brunch so they have mellow live music playing unobtrusively while you dine, and is that ever bad?

    The final rundown:
From soup to nuts, a great affordable dining experience is waiting for you at Johnny D's.

I had *such* a good time here at a show recently. If there is a well-loved but slightly less known artist that you want to see, and they're playing here, please, go. I saw Alan Doyle from Great Big Sea here and it was definitely one of my favorite shows ever. Whoever was doing the sound must've known what they were doing, too, since small venues do have a tendency to be ear-splittingly loud, and there was never a point where I felt like I had to plug my ears or else my brain was going to explode.

Disclaimer: This is obviously based on me going to a show. No comment on food, service, brunch, etc. because I haven't been.

Johnny D's is a great location in Davis that draws so many different types of people from all over the GBA. They have great food--the regular bar fare--and stuff is pretty cheap, especially appetizers. Good local beers on tap too--which is really great. Live music most nights, and events on every day of the week.

My two favorite things about Johnny D's are not the food and drink though--
    1) Trivia Night! Things get competitive every Monday for bar trivia. It's a really good atmosphere, mostly a 20-30s crowd, but some older couples and families and a lot of regulars to keep the game going. Lots of fun, and inexpensive since you don't have to buy anything to play. They also give away some great prizes like concert tickets to local venues.

    2) Organic compost pick up! They leave coffee grounds out for local gardeners! What a clever and compostable thing to do for a socially conscious neighborhood like Davis.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Johnny D's after so many visits here.  With close to 300 reviews by others, I won't review the normal stuff - instead I'll tell you what's new or unique!

Did you know you can take organic coffee grounds left out on the sidewalk daily - for your garden compost?  Did you know they recently switched to serving only local brews on tap?  Did you know they make their own tortilla chips every morning?  Did you know they have lots of $5~ish apps?  Did you know they now have two shows a night?  Did you know they have a $10 spaghetti dinner and show deal every Wednesday?  Did you know they offer lots of vegetarian options?  Well, now you know.

I came here with my fiance, a friend of mine from high school and her boyfriend.  We came for the Sunday brunch but by the time we got there the band was done playing.  I didn't get a bloody mary although from these reviews I wish I had!

I got the cheese blintzes and they were super heavy but super delicious.  My boyfriend got french toast which he seemed to enjoy.  My friends got omelets and they also seemed happy.

Our waitress was a ditz and kept asking weird clarifying questions (did you want the guacamole IN the grits) which really confused us.  But that's okay.

The music at Johnny D's seriously can't be beat.

Now, the brunch sounds good and all that. I've read about the Reese's French toast, people. But if you're strictly a Johnny-D's-jazz-brunch person, you have GOT to check out the music scene!

They have live music every day of the week except Monday, which is trivia night. They have all kinds of music: indie rock, blues, bluegrass, R&B, funk, jazz, reggae. But my favorite is the world music. Since I have lived here I have heard acts from Cape Verde, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Argentina, Israel, Romania, Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. I am probably forgetting some. It is really cool that performers fro all over the world get booked into this little tiny venue in Somerville, Mass.

The dinner options at Johnny D's are decent. If you reserve a table for dinner, you are guaranteed admission to the show that night (although you still have to pay for your ticket separately from dinner). This has never been an issue at any of the shows I've attended, but maybe there are shows that sell out? They also allow you to purchase tickets in advance on the website, but the times I've done that it has been completely unnecessary. Even if you don't get a seat at a table, there is room to stand at the bar and you can see and hear just fine. Acoustics here aren't the best but it is a nice, small venue where you can see the performer's lips move and fingers on the guitar strings, and that counts for a lot.

Johnny D's has a nice little dance floor where you can laugh at the white people attempting what they think of as African dance, while knowing that's how you probably look too. They have a good beer selection too -- for awhile I was addicted to the Clown Shoes Brown Angel. Yum!

I was only here for brunch but the brunch I had was a pretty good brunch for the $15.00 it was.  The coffee was $3.00 but it was unlimited refills and it was during the jazz session which was a cool little add on for the morning.

I would like to go back with my host for an evening show or a drink or two just to see how the place is at night.  So far it was nice... and if you get there early enough you can avoid the massive crowd.

I've been to Johnny D's a few times now, and while it's not somewhere I'd go out of my way to get to it's definitely a perfectly enjoyable place to hang out (being 8 minutes from my house doesn't hurt either).

I've been to Monday night trivia before, and while it wasn't nearly as rowdy as I like my trivia (the team names weren't nearly vulgar enough either..) it was definitely a decent way to spend a Monday night. I also recently attended a coworker's Acapella show here and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of service on a (shockingly) packed night. Our waiter was very attentive and even took a minute to let me know when they were tapping a new keg of Harpoon IPA so I wouldn't think he had forgotten about me.

Overall this place isn't terribly interesting, and if I just want to sit at a bar in Davis and grab a beer I certainly have better options, but if there is a specific event you want to attend or if you're up for some chill trivia Johnny D's isn't a bad local option.
