Came here for the first time last week with coworkeres for the Wednesday businessman's lunch special and I was not disappointed! Â It's quite a hidden gem of a little British-like style sports pub complete with items like scotch egg as well as Texas staples like chicken-fried sirloin steak.
But Wednesday lunches are quite the event as many of their entrees like prime rib and the country fried steak are 50% off. Â After discounts, you can get a full and hearty meal for less than what you would spend at a fast food joint.
Highly recommended and I will likely come back regularly.
My boyfriend and I met up with his father here last week. It's close to the house and Guinness is particularly cheap, so how can you go wrong? Plus, I think the name is really cute.
The service was good and so was the beer selection. The fish and chips, everyone agreed, was exceptional. The french dip was just okay, and my grilled cheese was totally raw. Like, the cheese was still cold kind of raw. As something of a grilled cheese aficionado I was pretty put off. I would have understood if the place was packed- sometimes things like that slip through the cracks- but as one of ten customers in the establishment it gave an impression of total lack of concern.
Otherwise, though, the place was fine. Unfortunately, just nothing exceptional.
I went on a Sunday afternoon for lunch with two companions. Overall, I liked the atmosphere. For a sports bar, it was not loud, and it was surprisingly well-lit with natural light. No dark and dingy noise-hole, this!
I got a cornish pasty with a side salad and Heinz beans. The beans were what was to be expected, the pasty was a little lackluster. Way too much tarragon in the ground-beef filling, and covered with canned brown gravy. It was not delicious. The salad was just a huge bowl of iceberg lettuce with the obligatory cucumber and tomato slices. Meh.
Another companion got pork chops, which actually looked delicious, served with fresh-looking green beans and a sphere of mashed potatoes, but they were also unfortunately covered in the selfsame canned brown gravy.
Our other companion ordered the chicken curry, which was standard, served on a bed of rice. It tasted exactly like the curry I used to make when I was a broke college student and hadn't been introduced to how much better curry paste is compared to curry powder yet.
But the beer was cold, the service was friendly, Â the parking was plentiful, and to spite my fairly negative little jabs at the food, i would go back.
Another one of my mother-in-laws favorites. Â I figured it was due to how close it was to her apartment, but after having lunch here after a packing session made me realize it was also the food and probably the surroundings as well.
I would describe this as a pub with a smidge of sports bar thrown in. Â The smidge of sports bar are from the TV's set up on various walls and behind the bar all tuned into a different game. Â There is a nice long wood bar set up all along one wall with plenty of beer on tap with low tables set up elsewhere.
We got the fried pickles (shocker, right?), chicken tenders and a bowl of chili. Â
The pickles here were different than I'm use to and came with a tiny bit of heat. Â I didn't order the curry fried pickles (a separate menu item), but I wouldn't call the heat on these "curry" level. Â In any case, that little bit of heat really went well with the coolness of the ranch I requested for dipping. Â The chicken tenders were beer battered and also pretty good. Â
I'd say the chili was the best though. Â It was served with tortilla chips with a big mound of cheese in the middle. Â There were beans, but not enough beans in it where they were getting in the way of the meat.
Definitely a place I'd like to return to. Â Maybe they'll seek to branch out a bit and open a location in Katy eventually.
If you like pizza and beer go on Thursdays!!! There was a time when I would come nearly every Thursday for roughly a year. The bartenders are all very friendly and knowledgeable.
*Insert story* So one night i'm on the outside patio when 2 people are slowly making their way to the car. One of the bartenders comes out to make sure someone was in good condition to drive.
Pros:
Fair prices
Decent assortment of alcohol
More than above average food.
Friendly atmosphere
Darts and not that plastic shit, ones that can pierce flesh!
NFL & Euro futbol packages!
This is good local dive for cheap drinks and decent bar fare. Highly recommend the curry fried pickles there, so good I could kill an entire basket alone!! It's local and easy. The best night is Friday when they have karaoke. The crowd is so mixed that it's fun to observe and people watch. Everyone there friendly and Mimi the waitress is always wonderful and attentive. Never had a bad time there.
Review Source:I use to come here a lot. Â More out of convenience than actually liking the place. Â A dirty, divey, pseudo British pub. Â Lot of taps, but not really a great selection. Â Some Saint Arnold, I think a tap of Chimay. Â A tap or two for some Fuller's. Â Though the quality of the taps have always been really bad for me. Dirty lines or old kegs. Â Probably both. Â The service is forgetful and slow. Â The food is bad, greasy pub grub. Â They just fry everything in old grease. Â Inferior to the other really good pseudo British pubs (Stags Head, Richmond Arms, Red Lion, and Black Lab). Â All of those mentioned are slightly flawed, but always fun. Â Go to any of those places instead.
Review Source:This place was a lot more popular before the smoking laws went into effect.
Great bar with awesome service, good bar food (a lot better than other local joints like Fox & Hound, etc.) and their well drinks are really good. Lots of beer options as well. Small patio so it could get cramped for smokers.
I've been going to Bull & Bear for years and I can truly saw it's an awesome pub. Great staff, decent prices and great atmosphere.
Best night to go on : Thursdays! 1/2 off pizza and wings! Plus reduce drinks.
Friday nights are good as well. Karaoke night , but for some reason everyone wants to sing really depressing songs. I need songs to make me happy, not depress to want to drink till I cry.
We used to go here a lot just because my boyfriend liked it. Â They do have a good beer selection. Â The food is just OK, a bit to salty for me and they don't have many veggie options, but it is a pub after all - so I can knock em too much for that!
It's kinda a mix inside of pub, restaurant, sports bar. Â Not sure where they are trying to go, but doesn't seem to matter cause the place is usually full of a mix of people too.
My man had a bad experience, indirectly, here of some racial nature though with a bartender and costumer which really turned him off, so we don't frequent this joint much anymore. Â
But if you're looking for a good beer selection in the area - you can check it out. Â It just happens to be convenient to us, that's why we kept returning at first.
Love this place! Â Great staff always. Â Great drinks and drink prices. Â You can get an "industry" card if you work in bars or restaurants and get 15 or 20 percent off. Â Also thursday is pint night. Â 3.50 pints of anything you can hope for.. Â 45 on draft I think they advertise? Â
You want more? Â Amazing food and homemade desserts! Â Great prices too. Â Thursday half price pizza and toppings. Â 5 bucks for a large! Â Soo good. Â Do this, get a bbq sauce base, chicken onion jalepenos and pineapple. Â
Great bar, patio, foof, drink and service. Â Just go.
Located in a deserted area of the shopping center, frequented by both professionals and local youth, this Irish style pub is a nice little hangout in the SW side.
There are plenty of chairs, dart boards and pool tables. Also TV's with an out doors area which is frequented by the locals, which means while it's a good place to keep an eye on your vehicle, a bad spot if a drive by should happen.
Food:
Pizza- cheap, but taste that way. Paper thin pre made dough with decent toppings. B
Chicken and curry- The fusion english meets indian type with chick peas. B+
Wings- decent and not too greasy. B
But dont come here if you look rich or have a nice ride. It's like the best bar in the hood, so bring your body guard.
I was looking for a sports bar to watch the Texans vs  Ravens game at. My obvious go- to's like BW3's, Houston Texans Grille, and Christians tailgate were going to be packed and I really wanted to enjoy the game and not suffer from over crowdedness. This place was perfect for that! It was packed but there were still a few tables left unattended and it was easy to walk around without bumping into anyone. The crowd was a good mix of seniors, 20 somethings, and 30-40 year olds.
Their entree's are HUGE. And they have some of the best bar food I've had in Houston. A friend and I were both going to order the chicken fried steak when the waitress suggested we share it because it was a rather large steak. She was not kidding. Even when she brought out the split order I had trouble completing it and at any other restaurant I'm pretty sure that my shared steak portion would be equal to one whole steak. My only gripe with their food was that it was lukewarm. Nothing was hot. And cold gravy is disgusting. Their steak was also a bit bland, but that's nothing a little salt can't fix. I would have given them four stars if my food wasn't so cold. The wait staff are an extremely nice group, they always had a smile on their face, and came by to check on us often. I'd definitely suggest this place the next time you want to get away from over crowded sports bars and just enjoy the game.
This place is tucked away in a strip mall and to think of it, I don't remember seeing a sign for it while driving down Westheimer. I think the only reason I saw it was because I was really looking for it!
I was meeting up with some friends to watch the Dynamo take on LA Galaxy for the MLS Finals and some of them live nearby so it became the spot to go to. My boyfriend and I arrived around 7 or so just in case it filled up since well who knows what the crowd was going to be like. The immediate parking spaces were filled up so I thought great it's already crowded, but when we walked in, it was pretty empty. Only about 3 or 4 tables were taken. This was a good thing for us since we were having about 15 or so people joining the party. We sat down with some of the folks already there and looked through the beverage menu. The prices for drinks are definitely reasonable, around 3 or 4 bucks a pint for domestic beer, and good thing they had drinks because the food and service were not so good.
Service - Well the first thing is that they were understaffed especially for a big soccer game, but maybe they thought no one really watches soccer. Although when I read about this place a lot of people said it was a place to go watch the soccer games. So the waitress takes our order but never comes back with our drinks. She comes back with everyone's drink but ours. After that she didn't come back to our table for awhile, about 10 minutes or so. The service at the bar was much better. I decided that I was just going to go to the bar from now on, the bartender was a lot friendlier and made sure that everyone was taken care of.
Food - I ordered the fried pickles and the jalapeno shrimp jammers (which the people at the bar didn't even know was on the menu!) Looking back I wish they told me they didn't have it because it would have saved me 9 bucks! Those things were just not good at all. It was mushy and didn't have much flavor of either cream cheese or shrimp. Just tasted like breaded mushiness. The fried pickles were simply Ok, not the best fried pickles. The batter stuck to the pickles well but some were definitely over battered that you felt like you were eating fried batter rather than fried pickles. I was only able to eat a little bit of the food because it wasn't that great and ruined my experience.
So why the 3-stars...well it's a great place to hang out because there's a lot of room, the drinks are cheap, there are darts. I'll go here to hang out with friends while watching a game but I'll make sure to eat first!
My oh My this place gets pretty busy. Good for them. Finally had a chance to swing on in and fortunately for my wallet I stumbled upon Half Price Pizza Day (Thursday) .16in of dough for ~4.50!!!! That, is what you call a win. I appreciate their Daily Specials and even more, their friendly, attentive staff. Tons of exotic beer on tap if youre a beer drinker. Large variety of lunch specials that looks appeasing as well.
Wings were crispy and tasty.
Pizza w/ half pepperoni and half ground beef. (dont get the ground beef).
What a hidden gem.
The only thing I kinda dont like is the price for appetizers. ~8 for appetizers? Thats more  than Firkin Phoenix in midtown. Plus, appetizers shouldnt be a dollar away from entrees. Makes sense, right?
I will be back.
$4 pint of Peroni, my new favorite Italian beer and probably overall beer in general!!
Girl time, Peroni, and fried curry pickles is why this may just turn into a regular thing. Being close to home and work doesn't hurt either so I don't have to trek into midtown or downtown...
Their fried batter is a bit oily..retains a lot of oil...etc...IMO and it doesn't stick to the mushroom or pickles. Falls right off after you take a bite.... eh I'll munch on these but looking to try food food next time!
P.S. Waitresses are friendly, helpful, will offer samples of beer if you are trying to decide, and not bothersome.
Three Dollar and Fifty Cent, Twenty Ounce Guiness Stouts!
Three Dollar and Fifty Cent, Twenty Ounce Guiness Stouts!
Three Dollar and Fifty Cent, Twenty Ounce Guiness Stouts!
Either Bull & Bear changed the price (or I'm stupid). Â Regardless, you'll enjoy a huge, tasty Guiness for not a lot of money. Â
"Negative" 25 cents get's this place another Star!
I've been to many pubs and taverns in Houston, but only one has $3.75 pints of Guinness every day. Their food is decent, burgers are really good, the pizza is okay, but quite cheap (especially on Wednesdays) and the traditional pub dishes are better than average.
The reason why I give this tavern a 5-star rating, is because I've been coming here for years and I've always had a great time. They're among the only places you can find almost every European football match on their TVs. And if you're a Celtic fan, the owner has a lot of memorabilia and posters.
Now, back to Guinness: For what i've been told by the bartenders, they change the barrel quite often, and they make sure the pint is served properly. And if Guinness is not your poison, there are plenty more to chose from!
PROS: Great service, quality beers at cheap prices, better than average tavern food, ample parking.
CONS: None that I can think of, there really isn't anything I dislike about the Bull & Bear. I
My overall experience with this place has been pretty good. Everything that comes to mind when you think of a traditional pub. The ambiance and welcoming feel of this establishment is awesome and the great drink specials on beer here don't hurt either. Another factor that makes this place seem better than a run of the mill pub is the weekly updated specials menu. I'm always up to try at least one item on the specials menu because the prices are not outrageous and the lunch deals are even better than you would imagine.
Although the menu selections might be a hit or miss situation sometimes depending on the day. The lamb chops have never disappointed me. Perfectly cooked chops with a nice sauces gently coating the proteins, paired with a mint & vinegar coulis to compliment the chops. My experiences with the fried items I've ordered the past couple of times have been done wrong. Fried foods have always been my best friend since my childhood years. But I can not simply stand by and remain yelp silent as a fryer is being done unjustice. The pickle chips and curry battered mushrooms were two items that had fallen victim to this fiendish fryer. Both dishes were fried to a crisp and then some. The taste was obvious, the oil in the fryer was a couple of days past due.
Besides the food, the service has always been pleasant and prompt. I have been back and will definitely continue to make my way back. Hopefully I'll come early enough to catch their lunch deals one day.
This place is awesome. It's one of our regular spots for my dart league, and I always look forward to playing a match here. They have a massive beer selection, and the food is incredible, especially for "bar food," all for a reasonable price. My personal favorite snack is the shrimp jammers, essentially a shrimp shoved up a jalapeño's butt, filled with cheese and deep fried. As I describe it, I think I may die of a heart attack. But man, it's worth it. Their sandwiches, salad, and traditional English food are always a welcome treat, as well. Yes, they've got haggis, and It's not bad. Pints are relatively cheap. $3.50 for a pint of Guiness is just about unheard of these days.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting here as well. I've met dozens of folks here from all over the world, and there's always a chap to throw some darts with when it's not a league night. During the day, the place is entirely different, and it's not uncommon to see families stopping in for a bite. During the day, it's definitely kid friendly, and it's not the type of place where you'll see a bunch of drunken crazies at night.
The only drawback I've got to the place: I'll never go on a Friday night again. I'm not a fan of karaoke, I don't understand the desire to hear drunken, out of tune, covers of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go!" If that's your thing, go nuts, I hear their karaoke night is a good one. Didn't know such a thing existed.
I have been to this place a few times at night. Â It's nothing special EXCEPT for their awesome Guinness prices which sadly doesn't make up for the blah atmosphere. Â If you want to hang out with AARP crowd then that's the place to be!
LUNCH/FOOD:
They have RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME lunch special prices. Â But the service and food is fare to mediocre. Â Expect at 2 hr lunch. Â I go back with a co-worker (who frequents this place) on occasion just to remember why I'm not a fan. Kinda like calling that old girl friend b/c she really wasn't that bad. Â Then one date and it all comes back.
I had a FABULOUS time last night during my first experience at The Bull & Bear. I live in the Westchase District and have visited a majority of the bars in the area, but had yet to try out this somewhat hidden establishment, located in a strip mall behind a Sports Authority on Westheimer.
I went with my boyfriend and 2 other friends for beer and bar food and I'm 100% confident that we will be returning. Thursday night just so happened to be $7 Ziegenbach pitcher night as well as 1/2 off pizzas and toppings night. Between the 4 of us, we has 2 giant pizzas and 3 pitchers and the bill came out to, roughly... $33. That's right. I said $33. That's a steal! Our waitress was SUPER friendly and even brought out fresh pitchers without us even having to ask. She was definitely on top of her game. Â OH YEAH! When we asked her what kind of pizza toppings they had, she said, "If you can think of it, we probably have it. The people next to you have tater tots and curry on their pizza." To me, that combination sounds pretty rancid, but just knowing that you have the option of such rare pizza toppings is a win. For sure.
I didn't even venture to the opposite side of the bar where the dart boards and other bar games were located, so I'm probably going to have to set up shop there next time. And, oh yes, there will be a next time.
If you're in the area and need a bev, stop by The Bull & Bear. I think youse gonna like it.
I visited The Bull & Bear on Sunday night around 9:30 pm and I wasn't impressed. I've heard the food is good but I came there to drink and only stayed for one round.
I was expecting more along the lines of "British Pub" and less "sports bar", which was what it felt like to me. There was a band setting up to play but we left before we could see if they were any good.
They had Strongbow which gave them a 3 instead of a 2. The rest of the beer selection was decent though I hoped for more of a European selection.
I don't think this is a place I would go back to just for a few beers. I can't say I won't go back and try the food but it seems unlikely since it's out of the way for me.
Bull & Bear is one of those places that makes me wish I lived OTL. Â And there are very few things that can make say that. Â It is an awesome bar with a great vibe. Â I came here first for a dart night and was surprised at how big it was inside considering it is in a strip mall. Â The bar is divided into a left an right but everytime I've been there, we've hung out on the left side with the dart boards. Â
There are two things worth mentioning about this place. The service and the food. Â Each time we've been here, the service has been impeccable. Â Drinks are refilled often and quickly, there is always a smile on the server's face, and after our first time in, they knew us by name. Â Very nice. Â
The food is the other amazing part. Â This is probably the best bar food I've ever had. Â Seriously. Â And, during the day, they have a bunch of lunch specials that are out of this world. Â Again, it makes me wish I was on this side of town more often. Â I've had the steak, nachos and chicken fried steak so far and I can't decide which has been the best. Â All I know is that if you're remotely hungry when you walk in there, you won't be able to resist the temptation the order something.
Prices are pretty good and there's always parking. Â There are plenty of tvs (and they're always playing soccer/futbol) and seating for big games. Â I believe that they're also the official bar for the Dynamo. Â All in all, this would be my go to bar for everything if it wasn't so far away. Â For those of you in the west side of town, count yourself lucky and have pint for me.
Have you ever hung out in a pub all day long? Let's say 9 am until you don't remember when you left and all you know that it was dark and had been dark for a while? I didn't think it was possible. But apparently it is.
What could anyone possibly do at a pub all day long?
Let's see.... Â
Watch football (aka soccer), watch rugby, watch car racing (you could watch all three because there's plenty of televisions here), watch men play virtual golf (and I finally learned what golf was all about), watch people from all walks of life come and go (including kids, only during the day though), watch people get drunk (watching the woman who apparently just popped some pills was especially interesting). Watched people play darts. I wished there was a pool table here so I could watch that. There's plenty of space where the dart boards are to place a pool table and plenty of space to relocate the dart boards (if you move the football paraphernalia). Â
I also got to listen to all kinds of conversations going on around me (while the men played virtual golf). I got to hear about how some teachers were getting screwed at some school - hence her 7th glass of wine. I got to hear about why drunk pill popping woman had to drink and pop pills-apparently she just lost a ton of weight and was now "coping" with it. I got to hear the sad story about a girl who got stood up by a gay guy-apparently she just got stood up by a straight guy but something must be wrong with her if she gets stood up by gay guys too. I also heard a story about how this guy was out shopping all day long to find an outfit to wear for his date that night. Oh yeah and how could I forget about the conversation that went from - 'America is the best place on earth to what kind of woman are you looking for'. There was a conversation a skipped out on simply because it was private...not my place to stick around for that. Damn my phone for the battery dying to keep myself busy. Oh there's always the handy trip to the bathroom.
I like the art of observation. It gives me good ideas on what to do but most importantly what not to do. Â
I'm not a breakfast person really. Cup of coffee will do just fine. But I did have toast and jam. Cup of coffee with free refills for a buck wasn't bad. Shepherd's Pie for lunch. Quite yummy. There's just something about meat and potatoes that's just oh so tasty but when put together with some veggies in a pie? Pure heaven. My dinner? Well that would be the reason why I don't remember what time I left. Â
Very interesting day indeed. Relaxing. Â Interesting conversations with both the ones I observed and the ones I participated in. Would I do an all day pub event again. Definitely. But you could only do this if you're with the right people.
Yeah, A-OK pretty sums this joint up. Been here a coupla times with my partner in crime Mr. Anthony H and to be fair this place has got all the right ingredients to be a decent bar. There is beer on draught (always a good start), plenty of big screen TVs for the sports, dart boards, and pretty decent greasy food to order.
It really is a "Cheers" kinda place where everyone knows your name, nobody knew my bloody name but that's no reason why it lost a star or two, I put it down to being only my first time here. Now these kinda places can be either hit or miss, I mean no-one likes to go to a joint where everyone is looking at you and wondering what your story is whilst simultaneous being the loudest rowdiest bastards in the place just cos they're regulars and "tight" with the management! But this place is alright and will no doubt be back again and again to watch sports or to take down one of the mighty, heart attack inducing breakfasts they have on here (that is actually meant to be a compliment!).
Ok, grievances, for one this is labelled a "Celtic" bar. For the uninitiated or for even those of you who couldn't give two shits, Celtic are a Glasgow, Scotland football team who are pretty much hated by anyone who is not a Celtic fan (me). I don't understand why bars feel the need to categorise themselves by shoving up memorabilia for a team the other side of the world, and a bleeding Glaswegian team at that! I mean "Big Johns Sports Bar" down the road from this place classes itself as a Rangers bar (the other Glasgow team, even more hated than Celtic and quite frankly I am disgusted anywhere in this great city would put it's name towards such as scum ridden, filthy........you get the idea).
Anyway......football rant over. No, this place is ok, happy to come back again, pissed of no-one knows my name yet (jokes) but all in all a not bad joint. No pool table however which is a serious no-no in my books but I can overlook that. Know if only I can find an Aberdeen supporters bar here in H-town I would be a happy man!
I was just here for St. Patty's day. Â It's an alright place. Â The music was good and it seemed like an "everyone knows the regulars" kinda place. Â The crowd is defiantly older than most bars...
The people I was with had the same "this is alright" feeling about it. Â
I'd be willing to give it another shot at some point, but so far it hasn't impressed or disappointed me.
Looking for a British pub with lotsa beer, British bar food better than average, beer, karaoke, beer, sports on tv, beer, maybe looking to get laid and some more beer? Â This is sure worth a stop. Â
Some friends and I started haunting this place the very day it opened, after having moved from the older location just down the street. Â They had a giant grand opening sign and we fell victim to that lure. Â When we walked in and asked when they opened, they said about 30 minutes ago... Â The place was brand new, waitresses and cooks in training. Â Â The almost all new staff brought us a lot of different types of food, free to get our opinions and it was all good. Â
So lemme tell you about the time I wore the skin off my elbows in this place. Â (Yeah this should be an interesting story eh?) Â
Since it was only about a $5 cab fare from my home, this was a perfect place to get totally drunk in public with some friends. Â And we full well achieved that several times. Â Â And of paramount interest is the day/night we stayed there drinking beer for about 7-8 hours. Â I think we polished off about 15 pitchers between the four of us and by the time I actually could have swore that the karaoke singer really was Steve Perry of Journey himself that just happened to stop by in person, I decided it was time to call a cab. Â
I wake up the following night to one of those "oh holy jesus!" moments wondering how I skinned my elbows RAW. Â Â Well, as it turns out, those tables might look like they are smooth, as they are shiny, but they have a very rough wood grain texture to them, and 7-8 hours of beer drinking and talking, and rubbing your elbows on those tables, will skin em raw my friend. Â Â So look out for that. Â
You can smoke whatever you want outside.
Need help getting your engine running after a late Friday/AM Saturday night out then this is where you can get it. Â
They have the full English breakfast and if your stomach needs something to soak up the alcohol then this will do the trick. Saturday and Sunday they serve it till 2PM so even if it takes you a while to peel the pillow off your face and unglue that mattress off your back  you can still make it.
Tucked away behind Sports Authority and just down from Specs this bar has a brilliant menu for those Brits who seek a REAL taste of home but what is going to appeal to the masses is the HUGE choice of beers on draft, Probably the best pint of Guinness in town and the bar keeps are friendly and cheerful. Friday is Karaoke and the regular 'pro' singers seem to flock here. V. entertaining.
Also the stomping ground for Houston Dynamos fans as well as Glasgow Celtic monthly meets so something for all you soccer fans including big screen with Setanta always on.
What more can I say, go try it!
Want to watch the EuroCup? Eat an enormous T-bone for $15? Or an equally good fish and chips and beans for $11? Have Guiness/Bass/Boddington's or a bud light?
Drive outside the loop to the Bull & Bear. Service was excellent and the pub food was very good. ESPECIALLY important is that they actually will play SOUND with the football matches, an important aspect of sports watching that is not fulfilled at the Red Lion, Pub Fiction, Two Rows, or the Maple Leaf. No, really, I tried ALL of them.
Bear & Bull is unassuming and located in a somewhat dreary strip mall. Plenty of parking and not many patrons on a Saturday afternoon but it was a decent place to watch a game. I've heard it's packed for its true love, the Celtics.
There are other bars outside the loop that cater to football fans, but I like this one the best.
N.B. Guinness is $3.50 a pint all day, every day. A pleasant price tag to counter your fill-up at the gas station to get out here.
The Bull and Bear is another one of those hidden treasures that seem to populate the west side of Houston. Â Located at the very back of a non-descript strip mall off Westheimer -- which also houses a Spec's, a Half-Price Books, and Rioja (the best tapas in town) -- The Bull and Bear provides a number of amenities that keep their customers coming back time and again.
Walking inside, you're greeted by the unexpected sight of an enormous, beautiful, highly-polished mahogany bar which boasts an impressive accumulation of draft beers along the back wall. Â The establishment is split into two main areas, divided by a wall: the main dining room, with several televisions along the walls, and the more pub-like room which is decorated to the ceilings with sports memorabilia from the pub's two main football (soccer) clubs: Celtic and the Houston Dynamo.
The pub is, in fact, the official supporters club of Celtic in Houston, as well as the official away-game viewing location for the Dynamo. Â They also broadcast almost all football and rugby matches, as well as the standard gamut of American sports.
The food at The Bull and Bear is typical English pub food, but done quite nicely. Â The cottage pie and steak and mushroom pie never fail to disappoint, and the Cornish pastie is a personal favorite. Â I have yet to determine whether or not these are made on site (probably not), but they at least don't taste frozen or premade, which is all you can ask for outside of Cornwall.
The Bull and Bear runs good happy hour deals and offers free wi-fi to its patrons. Â No password required -- just hop on and cruise the web while you enjoy your pint of Boddington's. Â And for those of you who want to display your shredding skills, they host hilarious Guitar Hero nights every Saturday evening. Â There are also two outdoor patios, which -- being far enough away from the traffic of Westheimer -- offer a nice, quiet place to spend your evening.
