I've been wanting to try H&S since it opened, and finally got the chance last night with my friend.

I arrived a bit early for our reservation and was seated immediately. The host (who came to check on us later - very thoughtful!) gave me the choice of where to sit and we ended up in the corner booth upstairs.

The waiter was super attentive, and even checked with the kitchen on a few different things for us, without seeming annoyed or put-out.

We decided to split some appetizers and then get our own entrees, so we ended up splitting:
    - Brushetta (Tomatoes, fresh garlic, onion, cilantro, asparagus & goat cheese on toast points): this was light and really flavorful. The bread broke easily when you bit into it, but it wasn't soggy or messy.
    - Pecan stuffed dates wrapped with bacon with a maple drizzle: I, unfortunately, did not think to drag mine in the maple drizzle. But nonetheless, these were AMAZING.

Negative: there were 2 of us, but they brought 3 pieces of Brushcetta and 5 dates. Even numbers for an even-numbered party, please!

We both ended up getting the Spring Salad (Mixed greens, strawberies, blueberries, manchego cheese, candied pecans, mango berry dressing) with Grilled Chicken. We didn't LOVE the mango berry dressing - it was overly sweet, but yet not quite flavorful. We asked for a Balsamic to round it out, which apparently they don't have. So the waiter brought us a small thing of Citrus Lime dressing.

Overall, I really enjoyed my meal and entire experience and want to come back to try everything else on the menu!

Ah, my new go-to spot.  The best words I could use to describe Hops N Scotch: slightly yuppy without the bromosphere.  If you're looking for a nice bar to hang out and get drinks with your friends, I highly recommend Hops N Scotch.  I've been here a couple of times and the service has always been really great.  The food...is good.  I've tried a couple of things off the menu; can't say that I don't like the food, but I just haven't eaten anything mind blowing.  I'd give the food menu 3 stars--good, but there's room for creativity and improvement.  Drink menu on the other hand - 5 stars.  You won't find any PBR or bud lights here, but they have tons of craft beers to choose from and a pretty impressive scotch/whiskey list.  Limited metered parking, but it's right off of the C line - coolidge corner stop or if travelling by bus, coolidge corner stop on the 66.
****One important detail: no shots here****
If you're looking to get crunk off shots, I'd go down Harvard Street to Allston.

Went there with a group of 10 for a going away party. Made a reservation and got a great table. Ther service was great and plenty of beers to choose from. The food was pretty good for bar food. Would come back!

The service here is phenomenal. Seriously, every interaction I have had with the staff that work here, they went above and beyond to be accommodating and helpful. Even as someone who enjoys scotch, I have yet to venture off the beer selection since they always have something that is perfect for the occasion or meal.

My boyfriend and I came here right when they first opened and had our first Pumpkings of the season, one of my favorites of the pumpkin beer offerings. They paired perfectly with his grilled cheese and my po' boy. We were very impressed with the pimento cheese spread with Allagash beer bread, as well as it's use on the grilled cheese (with bacon, natch).

I recently came back for a friend's birthday in the bar area, and my experience that night will have me coming back more often as well as bringing friends to Hops N Scotch. We discovered that from 5-7 in the bar, most of their appetizers and small plates are only $5! Bacon wrapped, walnut stuffed dates? Divine, and only $5. Crab cake sliders with mango salsa? Amazing and so filling for only $5. Truffle fries and fried pickles? Some of the best I've ever had. Mac and cheese was a divine classic. I'm glad we were in a large group so we were able to try the whole menu! And all of it was washed down with the Anderson Valley Summer Solstice, my currently favorite summer offering! Again, I could not get over how helpful and accommodating the staff was for us.

Hops N Scotch, you will be seeing me on a regular basis.

Ate and drank here about a month ago over Memorial Day weekend with my husband and a friend.  We all had the Bourbon Ale, which is freaking delicious...I'm sad I never thought of this combo before. We got the bacon-wrapped dates as an app to share, which was also very very yummy (still tasting it now!).  I got the burger, which was good, although it was too big to eat with my hands, which was a downer.  My husband got the braised short ribs, which were excellent, and I don't remember what my friend had, but she finished it, whatever it was.  We did have some issues with not one, but two chipped glasses, but at least the waitress apologized.

Overall, I will definitely be back here again!

so, after many years in brookline, this is by far my fave neighborhood restaurant/bar.  we only sit at the bar in any place we go, and i was with a group of people that expanded, and our bartender was so quick and accommodating on a Friday night, we LOVED.  Adrienne(bartender)  is amazing, fun to sit near and fast! She mixes incredible sips.  The menu had new items that  I love, I'm super picky.  The salads are fantastic, and I have seen the waffle and fried chicken dish come out during brunch. Everyone was raving about their plates.  LOVE it there

out on the town and a 3 star yelp.

locals brought me here as i was in town for a layover.  personally, i would have enjoyed CCC, but the place is new and im willing to give it a shot.

I forget what this was before it became HS, which is a cleaver name, but once inside we were brought up to the 2nd floor.  lots of potential and i believe a roof deck is going in.  i could see the pru from the window, so i forecast lots of brews being served up there in time.

the menu is about a quarter of the size of the beer menu.  from all of my binge watching of bar rescue, i know too many items is too many, but i was hoping for a few more item.  i settled for a 13 dollar cheeseburger instead of a 22 other  dinneresque like entree.  kinda of pricey if you ask me, but if its good, i suppose its worth it.  well, it wasnt.  8 bucks maybe, but 50% more than that??

the beer menu as i said was extensive, so it had that going for it.  i ordered a summer solstice cream ale, i was brought a cider. no worries, my waitress quickly brought me a heavenly cream ale, i do recommend this to a lover of tasty libations!

all said and done it was fine, or, a-ok, but if i could i may just try something else.

We decided to try Hops N Scotch on Saturday night and were really hoping it would be great. Unfortunately, it was not.  The drinks are average priced and they have a pretty extensive beer/scotch menu, but that's where the positives end.  The food was lackluster as best - soupy Spinach & Artichoke dip, overcooked chicken and a po boy covered in fry grease.

Having worked in restaurants for the better part of my college and grad school years, I generally give new places the benefit of a doubt while they work out the kinks, but the manager with an attitude problem pushed me over the end. We won't be coming back here.

I was visiting Boston for the Memorial Day weekend for a music festival and to my luck no one I knew was also in town. Hops N Scotch was within walking distance of where I was staying, and I was really looking for a place to just sit down, drink beer, and watch sports.

Service: they were nice enough to switch their one television to the game I wanted to watch. I never had to wait to order my next drink or my food. Their staff was attentive, generous, and very congenial.

Food/Drinks: I only had the Scotched Battered Eggs, which were absolutely delicious. First time I had it and after hearing so many good things, I had my doubts I would feel the same way. But it certainly delivered and did the trick. The beer selection is more than respectable as is their other drink menus.

Atmosphere: rather chill place. I can see bringing a date or if you want to try a variety of drinks, this would be the place to go. Not the place I would go to rage or strictly watch sports but it really worked out in my case. I was all alone and felt comfortable enough to stick around for 3 hours.

Overall: I currently do not reside or visit Boston often so take my review lightly in terms of "are there better places?". But I thoroughly enjoyed it as a visitor and certainly would not mind going again.

We had decided to go to Hops N Scotch as it was near by and heard great things about the place.  We were NOT disappointed!

From the lively atmostphere, good food, and awesome drinks...another great night out with the girls!

Burgers and salads are very good.

We will certainly be back to try the Brunch!

Hops N Scotch works as a nice medium between Publick House (more of an atmospheric place with no TVs) and Coolidge Clubhouse (more of a neighborhood pub atmosphere). They have an extensive list of whiskeys and a good selection of cocktails. The cocktails I've gotten here weren't great (tried the Hops N Scotch and Mint Julep), but they made up for it with the selection of $6 draft craft beer (I can't believe I'm saying I'm happy about $6 beers - welcome to Brookline).

I've order the po boy and it was delicious with a really tasty remoulade sauce. The fries were above average as well. My friends enjoyed their burgers and chicken club with rosemary mayo. We were able to watch a game on their TVs and drink craft beer - sounds easy but not always something you can do at the same time in Brookline.

Coolidge Corner definitely needed a fun hip bar to shake things up a bit in this YUPPY 'hood.  They have a pretty decent scotch list and some yummy snacks to munch on while you imbibe.  Definitely try the scotch egg, you won't regret it.

My party ordered 3 burgers cooked to medium. All 3 came out after 45 minutes cooked to well done, and were dry. If a They're gonna charge $14 dollars for a burger they need to learn how to cook it. Management gave our party some free dessert to make up for it, proving a commitment to service...but they need a commitment to food to match.

Beer list is on par for beer-bars in the area. Whiskey list is good, but the pours are basically shots. Some wider-mouth glassware would help bring out the aromas of the whiskey.

Went here last night with my boyfriend. We were lucky enough to snag bar seats, even though it was fairly busy for a Wednesday night. Overall, we had a great experience. Service was a bit slow at first, but I think that's because the bartenders were overextended. Great craft beer and scotch selection. Excellent American (new) menu. I love that they had smaller plates/appetizers as well as meals. There was a wide selection of food that looked delicious and the prices were great. We'll definitely be returning soon.

Came here with coworkers after work on a weeknight and we were thrilled at the $5 apps. Fried pickles were pretty good -- they weren't cut in slices, but instead kind of like French fries, which was hard to get over until I ate one (and then ate thirty more). The bacon wrapped dates were great, too. You cant go wrong with bacon and maple drizzle.

Drink list was very good and the bartender was very helpful. He made a grapefruit martini even though it wasn't on the menu and insisted on getting one of us another beer when they didn't like the one they originally selected.

Definitely need to go back to try more of the food.

Nice addition tuo Coolidge Corner. Slightly bland interior looks betteer at night but still needs some character. Friendly service at the bar, includung being asked if we wanted ice in water or not with food. The pub grub was OK, not stellar, and the  drinks were quite well-made, with an impressive list of beer and whiskies, as yiud exoetct.  Note the double order of scotch eggs (2)were nice surprise,  but not quite as good as gallows. All in all a decent, comfortable place to hangout.

I have been meaning to visit Hops N Scotch for a while. My girlfriend and I took a trip to Coolidge Corner and we stopped by for dinner. We waited about 10 minutes for a table on a Saturday night (not bad at all.) The downstairs portion of the restaurants looked very rustic and cozy. Upstairs had a great view of Coolidge Corner, but felt really cramped.

The beer and scotch lists are, as expeceted, fantastic. It's been a little while since my visit, so I can't remember what scotch I tried, but it was phenominal. My girlfriend ordered a flight of Belgian beers which had a sampling of 4 different beers.

We split two appetizers: The pecan stuffed dates wrapped in bacon, and the scotch eggs. This was my first scotch egg and I loved it! The dates, however, were my favorite item of the night. They were packed with flavor and I regretted the fact I had to share them!

For entrees, we weren't too hungry so we ordered sanwhiches. I tried the Grilled Chicken Club. I usually do not order chicken when I go out, but this dish caught my eye. The chicken was heading towards the dry side, but I'm so glad it was grilled over fried anyway. The star of this dish was the rosemary mayo. There was so much flavor packed into it, and I tried to savor every bite. My girlfriend ordered the Catfish Po'Boy. I know she enjoyed it a lot. I only sampled a couple bites but I agree that it was a good dish.

The only complaint I really have was that the service got a little slow towards the end of the night. Up until our entrees came, our waitress was very attentive to our needs. I was interested in ordering a beer or perhaps another glass of scotch, but she didn't come to our table again until after someone else had cleared out dinner plates away. There was a (very cramped) table of about 10 or so next to us that got a lot of attention, so we may have just slipped her mind.

Even with that lapse, I am very glad we visited and I will return to drink more scotch!

Tried out their Traditional Benedicts dish for lunch and had a cup of their OJ.

Asides from the pair of benedicts, it came with a side of salad and diced potatoes. It didn't give me the 'wow' factor traditional diners usually give me with their benedicts and the whopping size of their servings, but it certainly looked appetizing and classy. Not enough Hollandaise sauce but the oozing flood of egg yolk made up for it. Side of salad was very fresh and crunchy with vinaigrette dressing.

$17 brunch including tax and tip.

In the afternoon, the interior and lighting is just as beautiful as it was when I came on Valentines. Window panels against all the windows. You have a view of Beacon St. and Trader Joes across the street. The weather was splendid and sunny that day, which made the brunch all the more lovely.

I had mix experience in this place. Went there four times and twice of them were fabulous but another two times were very OK-terrible.

I prefer bar area or first floor setting. The dining design in 2nd floor was not inviting at all. It was sad during weekday night. First time, my scotch eggs were great, second time it was overcooked and dry. The fried pickles tasted like sour pickles instead. The mac n cheese was a hand down side dish.

Pan sealed salmon was great. They tend to overcook burger and rib eye steak 50/50 chance. Better order medium or medium to rare if you like medium cooked in steak n burgers.

This review is only for the bar area.  We stuck to beers and small plates.

    1. Overall - this place feels like an airport bar.  Okay, maybe the airport bar with the piano in it.  But, an airport bar none the less.  I was trying to figure out if this was possibly a good thing?  I mean, some of the craziest conversations I've had happened at airport bars.  But then ... no.

    2. Beer menu is good but surprisingly not awesome given the name of the place.  However, the bartenders clearly knew their stuff - which I always appreciate.

    3. The food was good - not great, but good.  We especially liked the beer bread/cheese.  The menu is somewhat vegetarian friendly (which is nice) but not in a way that stands out from any of the other gastropubs in Brookline - hummus, salads, and mac and cheese.

Overall, I think I'd go back - but I'd bring some Hemingway.

Overall, this place has a fun vibe and an interesting concept. I was excited to give it a try, but have to say I wasn't super impressed. However, I know that the place is still new and ironing out the kinks, so I'm definitely willing to give it a second chance and hopefully add another star or two in the future.

First, the service was extremely slow. The poor waitress didn't know what a Boulevardier is--she said they didn't have the ingredients (even though it was on their website's menu), but later brought it after all, though she couldn't differentiate between that drink and a Manhattan so we ended up having to move a few drinks around. Poor girl was friendly though so it was fine. We were there for friends and the atmosphere so this was not the end of the world. Could be annoying if you're in a hurry or snotty about service.

The food was pretty good. We were surprised that the fried pickles had a different spin, with long lengthwise strips instead of chip style. Not so great. The bread+cheese app was amazing and in itself worth going back. I tried all five of the entrees my party ordered (stew, fried chicken, shrimp etouffee, gratin, and pork loin) and I would recommend all of them. We had the blueberry cheesecake for dessert... So delicious.

The bar area was totally packed so keep that in mind if you like your personal space, but it's a fun environment. One funny thing is that another review said it was so hot in there, yet I was tempted to put on my jacket the entire time because it was quite cold. Hopefully they get everything settled so we can go back, otherwise I'm sad to say it won't be my new favorite place.

When I saw the storefront for Hops n Scotch I was really excited that a craft beer and spirits store would be coming to Coolidge Corner. I was thinking along the lines of what Publick House Provisions could have been, plus some extra booze.

Instead, a quasi-gastropub opened up in this space, and I ventured there last week for a belated birthday dinner for a friend.

Yes, they offer beer (and scotch) flights, but the draft list isn't THAT impressive or rare. I can't speak for the scotch, since I'm not a big fan, but I did see a few names I recognized and it looks like aficionados of all budget sizes could indulge.

The menu is typical nouveau comfort food, and I opted for the grilled cheese with tomato soup with a salad subbed for the fries. Everything was tasty, though I found the soup more citrusy than any tomato soup I'd ever had. My friends tried catfish po'boys and burgers.

The service was nice, albeit overly attentive, with at least three people checking in on us. Prices were reasonable.

Decor is cool (darkish tones, funky candelabra type things, and an expansive upstairs).

Not bad, but I'm not excited. I'll still head down to the Publick House when I'm in the area jonesing for good food and a brew.

I love going to Hops with one friend for drinks exclusively. They have a great drink/ draught selection. If I have to rank Hops based on automosphere I'd give it 5 stars. It's always busy no matter the night and is a gorgeous venue both upstairs and down.

Since it is constantly busy and the food doesn't make me wanting more, I have been there for dinner with my Boss and ultimately wasn't impressed with the speed of the service or the presentation.  I can't give it give stars. I'd never discount the friendly bar/ manager staff nor would I hesitate to ever host an event here.

I may be slightly biased in this review, since one of my experiences here was a bad date, and another, a dinner with an ex-friend (bad voodoo!!) but I'm pretty underwhelmed by Hops N Scotch.

When it first came to the Coolidge Corner area, I was stoked to have another bar nearby.

First time, I came for dinner with aformentioned friend a few weeks after it opened. I think it's beautiful restaurant- we sat upstairs- and a nice bar area, but the clientele is a bit douchy (I mean, it is Brookline). I guess this fact is less surprising to me after going here my second time on a date with someone also slightly douchy. (Am I allowed to say douchy on Yelp? Three times?)

That being said, the beer list is pretty impressive. A good selection, not quite so pretentious (IE: you can pronounce almost everything) and the bartenders are keen on giving you a good recommendation. I know a bit about Scotch whisky on paper, but it's not really my taste, yet so I can't say anything on their Scotch list.

The food is meh. I can't even remember what I got, it was so meh. I was expecting Publick House caliber food. I'd rather eat a good meal and pay too much for a beer I can't pronounce at PH then HnS, especially since it's closer to my house.

I would go here just for drinks again, as long as it wasn't crowded. And that bad date isn't there!!

My first visit back in October, I sat with a friend at the bar and ordered food. Loud, fun, great burger and really ridiculously yummy fries. Also, the bartenders walked that fun line between letting us drink, eat, and chat and participating in the conversation. It's a skill and both did it well.

Second trip: We went at 5:30pm on a January Friday and had the upstairs (yes, there's a gorgeous upstairs with tons of room!) mostly to ourselves. Since we're the quieter type, this was lovely. Our table is pretty easy to please foodwise, but it still should be noted: food was VERY good. The appetizers and sauces, in particular, were flat-out delicious. The sandwiches (burgers, chicken, and po'boy) were also quickly devoured. This is comfort food done right.

As for the drinks, I'm not a scotch expert, but the mixed drink menu was delightfully varied. My friend enjoyed the wine list and my fiance, who is the scotch drinker, was pleased by the selection.

My recommendation: Go and go early, especially if you like it a little quieter/aren't as in to the bar scene. If you like things a little more bustling, sit downstairs at the bar and seen/be seen.

Review for beer-drinking and bar standing only:
I recently went here just for drinks before heading to lineage.  It was around 7:00 pm.  It was not too crowded and the hostess and waiter were really attentive and helped us find a table to stand around that was a little bigger.  It was nice to have a waiter in a bar area.  The beer selection was great.  Prices were exceptionally reasonable.  If in the area, I will be back.

I recently moved to the Coolidge Corner area and was bummed when I realized there really wasn't any bars in the immediate area. I wasn't looking for anything great just a place to grab a few drinks or get a decent dinner while catching up with friends. I had moved from Comm Ave in Allston and was a frequent weekday customer of Joshua Tree and Tavern for post work appetizers. When I made the move to Brookline I also wanted to step up my weekday spot to a place somewhat nicer ....so Coolidge Corner Club House was not an option. Luckily Hops and Scotch opened a few weeks later.

Is Hops and Scotch my favorite restaurant or bar in Boston? Absolutely not, but it does have a lot to offer. The menu is limited, but there are options for everyone. I was pleasantly surprised with how good the braised short ribs were, they are by far my favorite menu item. They are approximately $20 which is a tad expensive for a casual weekday meal but I usually have enough to eat for dinner another night. It comes with mashed potatoes and green beans both of which are delicious!

I have tried the Mac and cheese which I would probably order again. I also tried the grilled cheese and it wasn't for me. It had too many additional ingredients that I felt it lost its identity and turned into a gourmet high in fat sandwich. It is served with a chilled soup which I neither hated or liked.

The other people I have gone there with have had their burgers, chicken sandwich, country salad, and arugula salad. The only complaint I heard about the aforementioned items was the arugula salad was overdressed and there was a lack of figs.

As for the drinks they have a good beer selection although their Pumpkin beer selection in the Fall was lacking. As for wine, they have a limited selection but for $9 you can get a pretty decent Pinot Grigio and the usually are heavy on the pour which is a plus!

I have never had trouble getting a seat any day of the week but every time I have gone there it has a decent amount of activity. Even on a tuesday the bar area was filled.

Pros: young professional crowd and great spot to meet friends for drinks or food
Cons: the bar area is smaller than it should be

The main point has already been said in other reviews: this is what was missing from Coolidge Corner .

It's a place to drop in, grab a couple drinks, and head on your way OR that you can come for a dinner/stay for the night (try grabbing a quick drink at Reagle Beagle before seeing a show at CC Theater. By the time they've lit your drink on fire and crushed the lemon zest or whatever else, you'll be late and they will judge you for chugging...;)

I went for the first time last night and love the atmosphere- great bar set up, plenty of seating. The cocktails are STRONG. I cannot overstate that. I am not new to drinking, and after two my friend and  I left I think partly in fear of what would happen if we had another. They are definitely cocktails to be sipped (looks like if I come for that quick pre-movie drink I'll be getting beer!). Between us we tried 4 different drinks and I think my favorites were the Hemingway and the Adriatic.

Service was great- very attentive and welcoming. I definitely plan to come back and try the food.

Hops N Scotch filled a much needed gap in the Coolidge Corner area.  They have a great selection of whiskeys, beers and food.  A great after work scene for the professionals that live or work nearby.  The staff is always friendly and accommodating.

The great thing is that they a new and want to stay around for a while.  There are definite ways they can improve and they gladly take suggestions.

I'm looking forward to stopping in here for a looooooong time!

Pretty decent place. I will definitely check back, but there are a few areas in which this restaurant could improve.

1.) Oh, oh, look, you have things other than beer and scotch? Oh, look, there's wine and there's even some cocktails. Judging by the menu outside, you'd never know other beverages are available.

2.) Turn down the volume. Some wall coverings might help here. Just a bit too noisy on the 2nd floor for comfort.

I thought the food was quite good. I had a very nice pear and blue cheese salad. The hush puppies were good but a little dry.

Prices are fair and service was decent, although our server delivered our salads before our appetizers which was kind of weird.

Bathrooms are clean and nicely decorated.

3 star rating  - because it's what I expected.  I think it fills a hole that was open in Coolidge Corner, and I think it will get better with time.  Think Publick House with a smaller beer selection, Five Horses Tavern with a smaller menu...

I didn't get adventurous with my ordering -- scotch eggs to share to start, Racer 5 IPA off the tap, medium rare burger.  My boyfriend went with a milk stout and the beef stew.  Overall the food was good, but nothing special.  I thought the scotch eggs were dry - they would have been better texture-wise with a sauce or a runny yolk.  My boyfriend noted while the flavor was good, the veggies were undercooked in the stew.  He wanted it to sit on the stove for another few hours to develop into a heartier, more satisfying dish.

The Coolidge Corner hole was a good size though, and the two floors of seating are refreshing and comfortable.  I'll crawl in again.

My friends and I kept calling this place "Hop Scotch" all weekend.  I felt as though I was back in San Francisco when I walked in.  Cool, darker ambiance with a young crowd.  Everyone was casual, but you know it's a carefully crafted look.

The drinks were good, although a little bit expensive and not very big.  I enjoyed a seasonal pumpkin infused drink and of course a scotch.  The menu doesn't have that many items, but that's OK because everything was amazing!  I ordered two appetizers and it was more than enough food.

The sliders: I wasn't too excited about getting them because I'm tired of them, but other items were already accounted for at my table.  Damn were they good!  The mac n cheese:  I've thought about it for the past week and hate that I am not in Boston anymore to get it.  It was just the right amount of rich, and came out hot and crunch on top!  Our group also got the chicken club and that got rave reviews all around.  We also stopped back in one night for a night cap and really enjoyed this place during our trip!

Hops and Scotch. When my friend told me about this place, the name alone made me smile. They have an extensive beer list (no surprise) with multiple things on tap and in bottles. They switch out their taps and offer a decent selection of seasonal beers, including Harpoon oktoberfest (which I can't find at home in NoVa...lame).

Hops and Scotch has a great atmosphere too. It's definitely a bar but the crowd is not obnoxious and has the neighborhood bar scene which I enjoy. We only went here for drinks but their menu looked tasty too. If I ever make it back up to Boston, I'm coming back here :)

A decent spot in a great location. When I walked in it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I had hoped for darkly lit and almost cigar room like. It felt almost not done in the bar area downstairs. I should note that I didn't get a chance to check out upstairs but have heard it is pretty nice.

I was a little worried when they were out of the first 2 beers I ordered, but finally we got on track with a beer and some fried pickles. Eh. I wasn't impressed. The pickles were way to thin so it was almost like eating breading instead of a fried pickle. Make those suckers thicker and you will have yourself a winner.

Along with my pickles I had the grilled cheese and red pepper soup. They have the choice of cheddar or pimento and I went for the pimento since you never see that on any menu. It was fantastic! I really enjoyed the flavor and all the cheesiness. The soup was a bit to chunky for me, but it served as a great dip for the fantastic chips. I wasn't expecting them (weren't listed on the menu) but they were a great addition to the plate. They were crunchy but not too much so and had some great parm flavor.

While service was great, there was a little too much business discussion happening in front of us at the bar. I don't really mind folks chatting it up, but this was like 3-4 people talking about working at the place. It was weird and seemed like we were somehow a part of their convo.

I'll definitely be back to try it out again, but next time I will head upstairs!

The food was fabulous, from the beer bread to the fall risotto to the Blood and Sand cocktail.  I am actually not going to lie - bought all of the ingredients this evening - and am currently drinking one.

The service that we had was slightly slow, but the food and the drinks definitely made up for that!  Great addition to Coolidge Corner!

After having brunch here, I feel silly for having given Friendly Toast five stars because the brunch food here is sooo much better. While most bars/dives have huge portions and heavy food, Hops N Scotch is different because yes, there's a bar area, but the brunch isn't greasy or overly heavy.

I went with a couple of friends - one girl that eats nothing but salads and soups most of the time, and my boyfriend who eats pizza and burger like there's no tomorrow and  loves lunch buffets. Both were pleasantly satisfied with their meals.

I had the belgian waffles with fruit and pecan whipped cream on the side --- SOO good! Came with real maple syrup too. We all agreed it's the best brunch place so far. They just opened, so my only hope is the quality of the food doesn't go downhill after they've been opened for a while longer.

Have yet to try the drinks on a night out, but if they're as good as the brunch is, I totally can't wait!

I got to check out H&S for their new brunch recently, and I'm sticking with my 4 star review.

Their brunch menu has a decent variety with some interesting options (see pictures). I ordered the breakfast sandwich: sausage, arugula, fig jam topped with a fried egg, on a giant buttermilk biscuit. This thing was massive, and really fricken tasty... that fig jam was especially good and totally made the sandwich. The fried egg was cooked and seasoned perfectly, with the yolk running down the sides as I went to take a bite (hard to do, because it was so tall... maybe they could make the sausage patty and biscuit thinner for better bite-to-food ratio?). It comes with a side of skin-on fries, which were crispy and well-seasoned. I think it would help to put a toothpick or two in the sandwich to try and keep it together, as it kept falling apart on me as I ate, but it was definitely worth the mess. Loved this dish, would order it again (and would slather that fig jam over anything).

The boy ordered the chicken and waffles. We both liked them fine, but he felt the waffle batter could use more seasoning, and I personally prefer cornbread waffles as well as boneless chicken (but that's just me).

The side of homefries we split were well-cooked, nicely seasoned crispy potato chunks, which were good for what they were, although I personally prefer some sort of extra umph in my homefries (paprika, or onions and peppers... something to take them out of dinner mode into brunch land). Also, I didn't know my sandwich was coming with a side of fries which is why we ordered the homefries, so we had double starch to eat (so would be helpful to list the fries under the sandwich on the menu).

Coffee was decent; the Tortuga (cider cocktail) was delicious. Our waiter was friendly enough; he could have taken our food order a few minutes earlier (but I think he got pulled into a staff meeting?), and could have told us the brunch cocktail menu without us having to ask, but overall no real complaints.

I think H&S really has something good going on here, and it's especially nice to see the owners so responsive to their customers both on Yelp and in person. I've been pretty happy with all the food and drink I've tried so far, and I'd come hang out over drinks more often if the bar area wasn't so crowded at night. Also, I have heard from friends that some bartenders are far less friendly/attentive than others, so hopefully the level of service can be raised for all the employees.

Otherwise, I still think H&S is a solid neighborhood place for food and/or drink, and I'm still very much a fan.

[Update: the Hangover Hash and Florentine Benedict are solid choices as well, and I love those chips that come with the grilled cheese and soup.]
